Here at MinistryWatch, we often report on organizations in crisis. One of the things that continues to interest me about these situations is the way Christian organizations respond to these crises. Some of them do a good job of staying in front of the crisis, or at least attempting to do so. But others are either caught by surprise, don't know what to do, or do the wrong thing. They seem to have forgotten the lessons of the Watergate scandal that happened more than 50 years ago. One of the key lessons from that era has become almost a cliché in the world of journalism and public relations. And that lesson is this: “It ain't the crime, it's the cover-up that will get you.” A case study in how to handle a PR crisis showed up a few months ago when the CEO of the technology company Astronomer was caught at a Coldplay concert with a woman who was not his wife. A “fan cam” video went viral, and the result was that CEO getting fired from his job. The incident ignited a national conversation about morality among leaders, as well as the appropriate way for an organization to handle such a crisis. Phil Cooke wrote about that. Phil has been on the program before, and he's become one of my “go to guys” when it comes to ministry leadership issues, especially when they concern media and communications. Phil Cooke is a working producer who spent many years in Hollywood. He also has a Ph. D. in theology. He's the author of a half-dozen books on media and marketing and has been a contributor to Fast Company, Forbes, and The Huffington Post. He is also a member of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences as well as the Producer's Guild of America. Here are some links I promised in today's program: For past episodes I've done with Phil, click here. To see Phil's website, click here. To read Phil's article on the Astonomer CEO, click here. The producer for today's program is Jeff McIntosh. Until next time, may God bless you.

After three churches were burned and 5,000 Christian books destroyed in a nation where Christians are persecuted, the local pastor's response was unexpected. “They burned it. That means we are going to have new pastors!” he said. “Now, will you send us more books?” Dr. Gary Seevers, President of Global University, leads a worldwide ministry that offers training focused on evangelism, discipleship, graduate and doctoral study programs, serving more than 3,000,000 people worldwide in 140 languages. Included in those numbers are persecuted pastors and other Christians in restricted nations and hostile areas. Sometimes instruction must be kept secret in places where persecution comes from the government, radical groups or even a Christian's own family members. Seevers says the goal of GU is not only book knowledge, but the ability to use that knowledge in practical ministry. A vital part of the coursework involves students taking a principle from the course and applying it within their community to serve the church and spread the gospel. Global University students and graduates have been martyred for their ministry work, standing firm in their faith in Christ despite threats and violence. Persecution has accelerated the growth of the church globally and will continue to do so, Dr. Seevers says. Pray for the ministry of Global University to continue to train and serve pastors and Christian leaders worldwide and for Christians persecuted for their faith to be bold witnesses who reach their communities—and even their persecutors—for Jesus. The VOM App for your smartphone or tablet will help you pray daily for persecuted Christians throughout the year, as well as giving free access to e-books, audio books, video content and feature films. Pastors today are navigating a complex, demanding, and often overwhelming landscape. Beyond the pulpit, they're expected to show up as counselors, administrators, fundraisers, teachers, building caretakers—and more. Some research even suggests pastors are carrying the weight of 13 different roles. It's no wonder so many feel stretched thin, exhausted, and alone. Today, Rachael and Dan sit down with Dr. Rose Madrid Swetman, Associate Director of the Center for Transforming Engagement, to name the often-unseen burdens pastors and ministry leaders carry—and to explore what it means to create space for care, support, and more sustainable leadership. Whether you're a pastor, a ministry leader, or someone who walks alongside and loves one, this episode offers a deeply human invitation: to reflect on how we care for ourselves, our leaders, and our communities. You'll find honest stories, thoughtful wisdom, and tangible practices for cultivating resilience—not by striving harder, but by rooting more deeply in connection: with God, with others, and with the truth that we were never meant to carry it all alone. In this episode of the Lead Ministry Podcast, Josh and Bill reveal a critical, often-overlooked strategy for preventing burnout—relationships. Too many leaders face exhaustion and discouragement alone, believing their struggles are unique. The truth? Ministry is not meant to be done in isolation.Josh and Bill unpack why ministry friendships must be outside your church, outside your town, and even outside your denomination—and how to find them before burnout takes hold.Key Topics Covered✅ Why ministry leaders must have friendships outside their church.✅ The dangers of oversharing struggles with people inside your congregation.✅ How to strategically build relationships that protect your mental, emotional, and spiritual health.✅ Why relying solely on your spouse for ministry processing can cause unintended strain.✅ The balance between inside-circle and outside-circle relationships for long-term ministry health.Key Quote"You need somebody you can be absolutely, fundamentally, and ultra vulnerable with. If you don't have that, you are bound for burnout."Scripture References
Summary: *Suffering Well: Heather discusses the concept of suffering well, emphasizing the importance of maintaining faith and finding peace in the presence of God, even amidst life's most painful trials. *Christ as a Model: The conversation delves into how Jesus' suffering and obedience to God serve as a model for Christians to follow in their own times of hardship. *Loss of a Child: Heather shares the heart-wrenching story of losing her four-month-old son, Brennan, which became a catalyst for her deepened relationship with Jesus and a transformative moment in her faith journey. *Challenges with Mental Illness: She recounts the struggles with her other son, Nate, who battled mental health issues, and how this experience taught her about spiritual warfare and the power of persistent prayer. *The Presence of God: Heather repeatedly emphasizes the unparalleled peace and joy found in God's presence, which she describes as the ultimate reward for enduring suffering with faith. *Miracles in the Journey: She highlights that the miracle often lies in the journey itself rather than an immediate resolution, and how persistence in faith can lead to profound personal and spiritual growth. *Persistence in Prayer: Heather encourages believers to persist in prayer and not give up, even when immediate answers are not apparent. She uses biblical references, such as the persistent widow and the story of Jericho, to illustrate the importance of enduring faith. *Spiritual Warfare and Authority: She discusses the importance of recognizing and combating spiritual attacks, particularly those targeting one's family, and the necessity of standing firm in faith. Intro: Author and Women's Ministry Leader, Heather Bradley shares her profound experiences and insights on the theme of "suffering well". Heather's journey through personal tragedies and challenges highlights the intersection of suffering, faith, and the transformative power of a relationship with God. Heather herself has been challenged with this very thing not once but twice and both of those instances had to do with 2 of her children, both sons. She refers to these seasons of life as her "even if" and "even though” stories. God didn't move His hand to change Heather's 4 month old son's health issues and her baby boy, Brennan passed into the arms of Jesus. When her other son, Nathan was 6 years old the family experienced his overnight transformation into a mental and emotional journey of pure exhauston lasting 10 years before God moved His hand to change Nathan's health condition. How do we suffer well when the One who could change our circumstance doesn't or at the very least He waits an awfully long time? But hold on to this truth…we don't need to fear the painful valleys in this life, and it has nothing to do with sidestepping or avoiding the pain itself. Nobody this side of heaven avoids trauma and suffering. But if you're a believer in Christ our suffering and pain are turned into purpose. We're transformed, refined and walking in a deeper level of intimacy with and freedom in Christ. There is nothing in this life that compares to the peace and joy that God can give in the very midst of traumatic pain and suffering. That's why no weapon formed against us shall prosper. If we give God space to speak into our pain, to answer the cries of our heart, comfort us when the answers won't come, He gives us the beauty of His presence that overwhelms our pain. So Heather and I made it a point to talk about the struggles and realities faced by many Christians, particularly in the United States, who often perceive faith as a pathway to unending joy and favor, devoid of pain and suffering. However, Heather's journey illustrates that suffering can coexist with divine joy, favor, and anointing, revealing a more complex, yet enriching, narrative of faith. The truth is, God is in the business of transforming us using the very pain that was supposed to destroy us. In sharing her journey, Heather not only provides insight into her personal trials but also offers a message of encouragement for others navigating their own paths of suffering. Her story is a testament to the transformative power of faith and the beauty that can emerge from the ashes of our pain. As believers, we are reminded that suffering is not the end of our story. God transforms all the weapons formed against us for our good and His glory. To me, being held in God's secure embrace, is the safest place to be in the most unstable environment I've ever know. Heather co-host's a podcast, called Leaving The Shallows, with her good friend-where they help listeners leave the shallow end and go into the deeper things of God. With the call to invest his life in ways that will outlive him for eternity, Pastor Bennie, a ministry leader working in ten different nations in Asia and Africa, desires to finish well—just as he saw his parents do. His passion is discipleship for young people to raise up Daniels and Timothys who will use their voices for Christ. Pastor Bennie has his own story of watching his father praising God while being beaten by militants. At the age of six, Bennie asked, “Why can't my dad protect me?” Working with young people today, he hears similar questions like, “Why is my father serving God in prison? What was his crime?” Listen as Bennie shares about gospel work in Sierra Leone, bringing medical teams to serve people who have never seen a doctor, and discipling the hearts of former Muslims growing into evangelists, pastors and church leaders. “Our job is to saturate them with the gospel,” Bennie said. He even distributes Bibles to Muslim students, knowing that God's Word will produce fruit. You'll learn more about Alpha Ministries' discipleship program for young people and what happened when Bennie asked, “How many of you have gone through persecution?” He will talk about serving and praying for persecuted Christians in Myanmar, India, Bangladesh and other nations. As Bennie meets with young, persecuted Christians, he is challenged as he hears their stories of persecution and suffering, yet encouraged by the faithfulness they exemplify despite imprisonment, rejection, and other abuse.
