Four snippets: Really, they’re just four passages lifted from these four letters of Paul to four churches. I had no intention to seek to connect them per-say, they just interested me and perhaps therefore might interest you this Sunday. And some of them did connect as I thought about it and wrote my sermon.

This week on Extra Credit: The Intern Files, Managing Intern Amy takes Filmlosophers host Eddie on a spiritual, cinematic, and slightly unhinged journey into the world of Mother Mary, the latest A24 release from director David Lowery. As the crew unpacks the film's layered themes, the conversation turns surprisingly theological. From questions of faith and identity to celebrity worship and personal belief systems, the interns explore how Mother Mary blurs the line between symbolism and sincerity. Is the film a meditation on devotion? A critique of modern sainthood? Or something far stranger hiding beneath the glitter and stage lights? Meanwhile, Eddie is fighting for his life as the interns continue recording in what can only be described as an increasingly cursed recording setup. Between existential debates and absolute production chaos, this may be the most spiritually enlightening episode of Extra Credit yet. Or at the very least, the loudest.

What does it mean to say the world is fundamentally open for play - and why does it take something to even have to say it at all? In this episode - the third and final in a live-recorded three-part series with Ethan Hsieh, Taylor Barratt, and John Vervaeke - the conversation centers on Ethan as he unpacks the distinction between teaching and facilitation, the purpose of TIAMAT, and the deep personal why that drives his work. John maps the teacher/facilitator divide onto Aristotle's sophia and phronesis, while the group works through how theory and practice function as mutual correctives - each able to expose the other's blind spots. They examine phenomenological adequacy (how a theory can be causally sound yet fail to account for what's actually showing up in lived practice), the necessity of an ecology of practices over any single panacea, and why no closed overarching theory can substitute for genuine interdisciplinary dialogue. Ethan unpacks TIAMAT's purpose as psycho-education toward a good life - affording self-knowledge and heightened religiosity (bindedness to self, other, and world) without becoming a religion - and walks through the SPIRE framework (Service, Pilgrimage, Inquiry, Ritual, Enlightenment). The conversation deepens into the primordial nature of relationality, the actor training roots of TIAMAT, and Ethan's core conviction: that serious play - wrestling fully with what matters, using every faculty of one's being - is the most human way to stay genuinely coupled to a reality that always exceeds our grasp. The episode closes on joy: not pleasure, not comfort, but contact. Ethan Hsieh is the Director of Community Development and Partnerships at the Vervaeke Foundation. He comes from an acting background focused on character development. LinkedIn Taylor Barratt is the Director of Practice and Education at the Vervaeke Foundation. After laying out how God's judgment comes upon those who blatantly sin, Paul turns the tables and shows that those who are self-assured, morally-upstanding, and religiously-devout are just as much in danger of God's judgment through their religiosity. Religiosity is the attempt to secure righteousness before God through religious performance. As such, we need to repent of our religiosity just as much as we need to repent of our blatant sins. Thankfully, the gospel invites us to rest in something far better - not in what we do, but in what Jesus has already done for us.

Trigger Warning: This episode mentions child on child sexual abuse, child sexual absue material, and the duggar family scandals. Please listen with awareness. We live in a sexually broken world. It seems like we are hearing new scandals breaking weekly where an adult has harmed children or a child has been hurt by another child.  Today we are exploring how negative beliefs, often within extremely rigid faith culture, can contribute to negative patterns. We then discuss alternatives that we suggest may be a healthier alternative for how to prep and support our children to having healthier relationships to sexuality within themselves and others. Can mourning become a pathway to the divine? Has the modern world sanitised death, and does Muharram insist we don't look away?Drawing from his forthcoming book Senses of Mourning, Dr Babak Rahimi of UC San Diego asks a question many have wondered, but few have explored: why do Shi'as keep mourning? This episode reveals mourning not as passive grief but as active devotion, a technique for connecting to God through the body, the senses, and collective memory. We explore how modernity's devotion to pleasure has pushed death to the margins, how Muharram insists we confront what modern life conceals, and why the senses are not obstacles to the sacred but pathways toward it. From the festive dimensions of grief to the standardisation of ritual by state and digital platforms, this conversation moves through the space where philosophy meets performance, and where the body becomes a site of hope.Dr Babak Rahimi is an Associate Professor of Communication, Culture and Religion at UC San Diego, where he directs the Program for the Study of Religion and the Middle East Studies Program. His research focuses on sensory religion, public sphere theory, and the historical contexts of early modern Islamicate societies. He is the author of "Theatre-State" and "The Formation of the Early Modern Public Sphere in Iran" (Brill, 2011) and editor of "Performing Iran" (I.B. Tonight we have a Christmas-themed triple feature of public-domain movies as heard from the projection booth: The Star of Bethlehem (1950), Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (1948), and Scrooge (1935).We'll also be running trailers from three really bad Christmas movies: Die Hard 2, Santa Conquers the Martians, and Santa Claus (1985). Plus one trailer for a really good Christmas movie, Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas. Rounding things out will be favorite 1980s-ish Christmas commercials and other vintage theater messaging (and a random appliance warehouse ad bc I want it stuck in everyone else's head too).So — The Star of Bethlehem was the only work I was familiar with before beginning this week's episode. It's inclusion is a shout-out to my late father, for his insistence that we make it to the midnight service to hear this story told again and again and again. Miss you, Dad.Religiosity aside, it's an astonishingly beautiful work. I have a computer, and I couldn't dream of producing something this wonderful. If you gave me a time machine to the 1950s, my MacBook, and pitted me against the creative team of Lotte Reiniger and Carl Koch, I would lose every time.Reiniger created articulated paper figures from spare cardboard and other materials, and the team animated them on glass over painted backgrounds. (Preservationists studying her paper figures believe they can tell what she was eating during production, based on what material ended up in the dolls.) One of their rigs also looked like the best bunk bed ever — photo on wiki. Honestly, give me a time machine just so I can hang out with this crew, they seem cool.Rudolph (1948) feels lower-budget by comparison. This is not Rankin/Bass Rudolph, man. It's based on Robert L. May's 1939 story, not the song. And to steal an internet meme: this is Zack Snyder Rudolph. Hard times — you can feel them oozing out of that steely, cold color palette. Which makes sense: World War II had just ended when production began.Going further back in time brings us to our feature film Scrooge (1935). The acting is solid and includes an Ebenezer expert (Seymour Hicks) as the lead. Variety, literally said Hicks could play Ebenezer upside down in its December 11, 1935 issue. And that Hicks played Scrooge for more than a quarter century both onstage and in two films including a silent Scrooge in 1913.As for trailers:Die Hard 2 — which is just Die Hard with the melodrama turned all the way up and relocated to an airport. Also, I'm positive the airplane-eject scene for John McClane was later pilfered by the GoldenEye folks… and it's nowhere near as cool.Santa Conquers the Martians, which I briefly toyed with making the feature; is awful. And Santa Claus (1985)... Last year my family stumbled onto a smart tv Christmas-movie list, and I saw Santa '85 and said, “Hon, I have a movie that will blow your ****** mind. It's like Superman meets Kris Kringle and is still earnest. Everyone is acting out of their brains. It's like Shakespeare. Like if Frank Miller did Shakespeare doing Superman.”And then I hit play like I was firing a heat-seeking photon torpedo at General Chang.Three minutes later, we're watching Santa drown in snow. A few minutes after that: bizarre McDonald's product placement. A scene of people merrily eating Quarter Pounders while, through the window, an unhoused and hungry child stares lustfully at the food consumption. His face framed by the Golden Arches. The movie is bad. But awesome bad. See it for John Lithgow, as an evil toymaker who excels at selling extremely dangerous **** to children. And Dudley Moore is a charming mutinous elf that tries to outdo Santa by creating candy canes that make children float. Definitely see it.And happy holidays, y'all.PS: If you're looking for an uncommon ambience episode with a more modern Scrooge, check out last year's The Night the Reindeer Died: Christmas Workshop Ambience.  “Informed Disbelief” ; IPS Deprogram December the 3rd, 2025.The recording focuses on defining and advocating for the "off-world stage perspective," which is presented as an active mode of media observation and analysis, contrasting sharply with the passive media consumption found in both mainstream and alternative (alt-media) spheres. The speaker asserts that both mainstream and alt-media audiences are susceptible to "mind viruses," or passively acquired belief systems that radicalize people and are spread evangelically by carriers. Alt-media followers ("truthers") are criticized as being just as dogmatic and deceived as mainstreamers, often serving as "alternative controlled opposition talking points" or "propaganda mules" who are "locked into those issues".A core premise of the off-world stage perspective is the recognition that the world stage is an "invisible cage" and a "system based on lies". Key events are not spontaneous but are "proactively inserted into our timeline" and "planned decades in advance" as part of a sophisticated, closed informational system that maintains a "worldview monopoly".The immediate goal is to scale up outreach to those who have already "seen through the deception" but lack a platform for their perspective, using target marketing and AI agents to reach those who noticed specific media events (like the "Charlie Kirk thing") were fake. The speaker emphasizes the necessity of maintaining a "higher standard of evidence" and "informed disbelief" to avoid the pitfalls of low-information belief or disbelief. The central barrier preventing people from adopting this view is often the ego, which resists admitting being wrong or stepping outside the established, compartmentalized paradigms of the info war."The beginning of wisdom is the ability to call things by their right names.""Because they're adhering to the mainstream unchallenged propaganda. But the alt-media people are just as dogmatic, just as deceived.""If you're carrying any red pills, you're a fool... because you've been served alternative controlled opposition talking points...""So what the off-world stage perspective offers is an active mode of media observation and analysis.""If you can't prove it's fake to a normie, a skeptic, then you don't have anything. You just have an opinion.""These events are planned decades in advance.""If you're not anti-anti, you're one of them.""You have to get out of the role of info warrior."Critique of Passive Consumption: Both mainstream and alt-media audiences are passive recipients whose minds are like "open garbage cans for big brother to dump its garbage into".The Role of Mind Viruses: Belief systems, or "mind viruses," are passively taken in and aggregated, leading to rigid, dogmatic beliefs that are impervious to logic and facts. The "Off-World Stage Perspective" (OWSP): This perspective requires stepping "outside of this movie paradigm" and acting as a media analyst engaging in a philosophic breakdown, rather than a media consumer.Media Duopoly and Triangulation: Mass media is designed to include the alternative so they remain inside the system, maintaining a bifurcated "info war" that keeps people distracted and fighting.Fake Events and Planning: Major fake events (psyops) are not random; they are planned 10, 15, 20, 30 years in advance and are proactively cemented into history.Religiosity in Media: Alt-media individuals often exhibit "religiosity," holding beliefs without evidence, using emotion and dogma rather than objective facts, similar to religious beliefs. The Ego as a Guardrail: The ego is the "main guardrail" preventing people from acknowledging they are wrong or changing their perspective, even when confronted with facts.Skepticism vs. Incredulity: True skepticism requires knowledge of the issue being refuted and suspension of judgment, whereas incredulity is "low information disbelief" that ignores information and mocks the opposing view.

The speaker emphasizes the necessity of maintaining a "higher standard of evidence" and "informed disbelief" to avoid the pitfalls of low-information belief or disbelief. The central barrier preventing people from adopting this view is often the ego, which resists admitting being wrong or stepping outside the established, compartmentalized paradigms of the info war.Key Quotes"The beginning of wisdom is the ability to call things by their right names.""Because they're adhering to the mainstream unchallenged propaganda. You just have an opinion.""These events are planned decades in advance.""If you're not anti-anti, you're one of them.""You have to get out of the role of info warrior."Talking PointsCritique of Passive Consumption: Both mainstream and alt-media audiences are passive recipients whose minds are like "open garbage cans for big brother to dump its garbage into".The Role of Mind Viruses: Belief systems, or "mind viruses," are passively taken in and aggregated, leading to rigid, dogmatic beliefs that are impervious to logic and facts. Incredulity: True skepticism requires knowledge of the issue being refuted and suspension of judgment, whereas incredulity is "low information disbelief" that ignores information and mocks the opposing view.Targeted Outreach: The strategy involves using AI agents for target marketing to find the estimated 50,000 people who have already noticed media fakery and can benefit from a platform that offers an explanation for it.

It's Wednesday, September 24th, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 140 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Chinese Communists restrict Christian online content Bitter Winter Magazine reports that Communist officials in China published new rules last week to significantly restrict religious content online. The religious liberty magazine noted, “It effectively criminalizes spontaneous religious expression online, isolates clergy from global religious discourse, and places sacred speech under the watchful eye of state censors.” The regulations allow only registered religious organizations to post preaching and religious education online. Clergy must promote socialist values. And they are specifically prohibited from evangelizing young people, reports China Aid.  But, in Matthew 19:14, Jesus said “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of Heaven.” Hungary to designate Antifa a terrorist group Hungary plans on designating Antifa as a terrorist organization following the example of the United States.  Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orbán recently told state media, “Antifa is a terrorist organization. . . . They have come to Hungary, beaten peaceful people in the streets, beaten some half to death.” This comes after U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Monday, designating Antifa as a domestic terrorist organization. Trump wrote on Truth Social, “I am designating ANTIFA, A SICK, DANGEROUS, RADICAL LEFT DISASTER, AS A MAJOR TERRORIST ORGANIZATION. I will also be strongly recommending that those funding ANTIFA be thoroughly investigated.” Man guilty of Trump assassination attempt tries to stab himself in court Ryan Routh, the madman who holed up in a sniper's nest with an assault rifle at President Trump's West Palm Beach golf club, tried to stab himself with a pen in a Florida courtroom Tuesday after he was convicted of attempting to assassinate the then-GOP nominee, reports the New York Post. The jury noted the 17 “reconnaissance” trips he allegedly made to Trump's golf course, and what they described as his excessive stalking of Trump, prior to the September 15, 2024 incident in question. A dramatic scene unfolded as jurors were leaving the courtroom when Routh took a pen and started trying to jab himself in the neck. Courtroom marshals sprung to action and dragged him out of the room as his daughter, Sara Routh, screamed at her father. She yelled, “Dad I love you. Don't do anything. I'll get you out. He didn't hurt anybody.” There is no video footage of Ryan Routh attempting to stab himself with the pen because cameras were not allowed in the courtroom. A few minutes later, Routh was brought back into the courtroom with shackles on. He wasn't wearing the jacket and tie from earlier and his white shirt didn't show signs of blood. The judge set his sentencing date for December 18, where he will face up to life in prison. Trump rebuked globalism and open borders at United Nations U.S. President Donald Trump addressed the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly yesterday. President Trump rebuked globalism, unchecked migration, open borders, and climate change activism. Listen. TRUMP: “The entire globalist concept of asking successful industrialized nations to inflict pain on themselves and radically disrupt their entire societies must be rejected completely and totally. And it must be immediate. That's why in America, I withdrew from the fake Paris Climate Accord.” He also called for the protection of religious liberty. TRUMP: “Together, let us defend free speech and free expression. Let us protect religious liberty, including for the most persecuted religion on the planet today. It's called Christianity.” HHS announced review of abortion kill pill LifeNews reports the U.S. Health and Human Services Department is launching a national review of the abortion kill pill mifepristone.  HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. accused the Biden administration of downplaying serious complications of the dangerous drug. Obviously, it is used in the killing of unborn babies. Not surprisingly, it is also linked with serious complications for pregnant women. These include hemorrhage, emergency room visits, and sepsis.  Proverbs 24:11-12 says, “Deliver those who are drawn toward death, and hold back those stumbling to the slaughter. If you say, ‘Surely we did not know this,' does not He who weighs the hearts consider it? He who keeps your soul, does He not know it? And will He not render to each man according to his deeds?” CDC no longer recommending MMRV shot for toddlers The vaccine advisory committee for the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention adopted new recommendations for the child immunization schedule last Thursday.  In an 8-3 vote, the committee voted to no longer recommend the MMRV vaccine for toddlers. The combination shot is for measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella. Instead, the committee recommended a standalone vaccine for varicella, also known as chickenpox, and another shot for the other three infections.    The committee noted increased risk of seizures among toddlers who received the MMRV vaccine.  Most religious state is Mississippi; Least religious state is Vermont Pew Research released data on the religiosity of states in America. The most religious state was Mississippi with 50% of adults expressing a high degree of religiosity. Next up was South Carolina, South Dakota, Louisiana, and Tennessee. The least religious state was Vermont with only 13% of adults expressing a high degree of religiosity. Other states with people of low religiosity were New Hampshire, Maine, Nevada, and Oregon.  Religiosity was measured based on importance of religion, religious attendance, frequency of prayer, and belief in God.  73% of Americans now feel safe in their town And finally, a new survey from Gallup found that more people than ever feel safe where they live despite the rise in conflicts between countries.  Gallup's Global Safety Report found 73% of adults worldwide said they feel safe walking alone at night in their city or area. That's up from 65% in 2006. Feelings of safety are increasing but remain relatively low in sub-saharan Africa and Latin America. The region with the most dramatic increase in feelings of safety since 2006 is post-Soviet Eurasia.  Close And that's The Worldview on this Wednesday, September 24th, in the year of our Lord 2025. Follow us on X or subscribe for free by Spotify, Amazon Music, or by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus (Adam@TheWorldview.com). Instead, we are talking about culture. Our guest, Paul Elie, is one of the leading culture and religion writers in the United States. His words have appeared in the New Yorker, the Atlantic, and the New York Times. Paul's latest book, The Last Supper: Art, Faith, Sex, and Controversy in the 1980s, tells the story of artists in the 1980s who grappled with religious ideas and stirred up controversy while doing so. U2, Madonna, Andy Warhol, Piss Christ, Sinead O'Connor and many more play a role in a masterful, novelistic retelling of that fateful decade in American cultural history.Damir Marusic is curious about Paul's concept of “crypto-religiosity,” which Paul uses to describe an abiding sensibility in 1980s art and culture. Is it actually a unique category? Aren't all Americans crypto-religious to a greater or lesser degree? Isn't that the legacy of Protestantism? Santiago Ramos pursues a different line of questioning. What might a healthier relationship between institutional religion and cryptically-religious artists look like?In our bonus section for paid subscribers, Damir and Paul compare the 1980s music scene with that of the 1990s; Damir explains why the 1990s felt “less devotional and more ecstatic”; Paul talks about his first time listening to “Smells like Teen Spirit”; Santiago and Paul discuss the coming culture of “ex-vangelicals”; Santiago confesses to not having his s**t together in his 20s; Damir asks: “How can you do good punk rock if Bill Clinton's the president?”; the three discuss why Trump hasn't yet generated a counterculture or artistic resistance; Santiago mentions Macklemore's Gaza song; Paul and Santiago discuss “radtrads,” and the coming rebellion against radtrads; Paul tells Damir why he should be religious; Paul explains why electoral politics is our modern day bread and circuses; and more!Required Reading:* Paul Elie, The Last Supper: Art, Faith, Sex, and Controversy in the 1980s (Amazon). * Paul Elie, The Life You Save May Be Your Own: An American Pilgrimage (Amazon).* Julia Yost, “The Scandal of Dogmatism” (Compact). * Damir Marusic, “The Pursuit of Passion for its Own Sake” (WoC). * Damir's discography from his punk rock days (Discogs).* Damir's music with his band, The Miss (Bandcamp).* CrowdSource, “Protest Music” (WoC). It's often remarked that America has become less religious, especially during recent decades. But what if that religiosity hasn't disappeared, but just taken less visible forms? That's exactly what was happening in the arts in 1980s NYC, argues Paul Elie, author of The Last Supper: Art, Faith, Sex, and Controversy in the 1980s.  As Elie tells it, the era wasn't just marked by the ascendance of the moral majority and the authority of tradition—figures like Pope John Paul II and Ronald Reagan.  It also featured subtle engagement with spiritual themes by the likes of figures like Leonard Cohen, Andy Warhol, Madonna, Patti Smith, Bruce Springsteen, and Martin Scorcese, and provides a template for understanding where Catholicism stands today.  For further reading:  An excerpt from Paul Elie's new book Kaya Oakes on why religion must ask better questions Susan Bigelow Reynolds on millennial religious rejection

In the chapter on approaching God, we learn how rituals such as du‘a (intercessory prayers) or dhikr (remembrance of God) informs sensorial experiences of the divine, particularly intimate ones, while the discussion on meditating on Muhammad considers the bodily aspects of Prophet Muhammad, such as his saliva, urine, and sweat that influence mawlid literatures and ritual performance of them within Sufi communities like the Naqshbandi-Haqqanis. Though rituals emerging from embodied understandings of holy figures are not without some tension, as we learn throughout the book but especially during the discussion on graves. Here the interred bodies of Sufi saints are caught up in debates around the permissibility of shrine visitation, a topic that comes up amongst lectures given by Swedish Muslim leaders. Kim (PhD: University of Sydney) is a Honorary Lecturer at the School of History and the Research School of Social Sciences (RSSS), Australian National University, a Mission Specialist at the ANU Institute for Space, and a Visiting Scholar, Harvard University, USA (2023-2024). He is a Board Member for UNESCO World Heritage Committee, Korea Government, an Associate Professor at Kookmin University, Seoul, and a NASA Judge for the Human Research Program (HRP), Johnson Space Center Huston, USA.Professor Kim, a Fellow of The Royal Historical Society (UK) and The Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britian and Ireland, has conducted a new study on the selection criteria for future Mars astronauts (2033) in conjunction with the Human Research Program (HRP), which remains an open question in the Mars exploration project as part of the Korea Research Foundation's long-term project (2022- 2025) in the field of integration of space science and humanities, as a result of a research visit to Harvard University and NASA Houston, human factors, astrobiology, astrophysics, life sciences, space politics, security, space exploration, and space well-being, and has been recognized as a pioneering study among scholars in the field. In this interview, Dr. Kim first discusses the phenomenon known as the ‘Overview Effect', a profound cognitive shift that astronauts experience when they see Earth from space. It's described as a state of wonderment and self-transformation that occurs upon witnessing the Earth as a fragile, interconnected whole. Many astronauts report feeling an overwhelming sense of unity, beauty, and a newfound appreciation for humanity and the environment. He then moves on to discuss his article, “Mars Space Exploration and Astronautical Religion in Human Research History: Psychological Countermeasures of Long-Term Astronauts” from 2022 in the journal Aerospace. He expands on the challenges and issues that arise when considering long-term space travel (of at least 3 years), such as radiation, zero-gravity, isolation, confinement, the distance from Earth, and emergencies that could arise, as well as the potential for an “astronautical religion” to help mitigate or prevent these challenges. PROGRAM NOTESDr. David W. Being religious and being spiritual is not necessarily the same thing. Religiosity often proves to be a hindrance to a genuine believer. In true Christian spirituality, the Holy Spirit must come into your life, to guide your thoughts and actions. Tune in to the Bible Study Hour as Dr. James Boice teaches us that only the Holy Spirit brings about a firm and true faith.
