This humorous and heartfelt book reflects on his experiences growing up as a gay Chinese American in 1980s Detroit, with his family's Chinese restaurant serving as the cultural and emotional centerpiece of his story. Chin's storytelling explores themes of identity, family, community, and resilience with both wit and warmth. Chinese cooking has been a part of the American dining scene since the mid-1800s and remains an integral aspect of the industry today. This week, we take an in-depth look at the Chinese restaurant tradition from a variety of perspectives. For decades, the parking lot was always full at the little red building just across the parish line from New Orleans. Inside, a packed house of diners could be found happily munching on dim sum and other Cantonese dishes at Royal China Restaurant. In 2021, after forty-plus years in business, Shirley Lee and her husband Chef Tang Lee decided to retire. But now they are back with their new restaurant, Miss Shirley's on Magazine Street in Uptown New Orleans. That hostess with the mostest and her daughter who helps run the business, Carling Lee, visited our studio to tell us how restaurateurs-turned-retirees turned restaurateurs again. Next, we talk to Curtis Chin, who came of age in Detroit at a Chinese restaurant run by multiple generations of his family. Like many immigrant families, Curtis' parents worked long, hard hours running their business with time for little else. But they made sure that their children were exposed to the wider world and all it had to offer. Curtis reflects on the lessons he took from that childhood experience in his memoir, Everything I Learned, I Learned in a Chinese Restaurant. Finally, Chef Andrew Lu joins us. Having grown up in Lafayette, the child of immigrants from China, Andrew is truly an Asian Cajun. And nowhere is that more apparent than in the name of his popular pop-up restaurant – Get Your Mom and Dim Sum. For more of all things Louisiana Eats, be sure to visit us at PoppyTooker.com.

He shares how the restaurant and his family's history in Michigan since the 1800s inspired him to write the memoir to pass on this story to the next generation. He then touches on the challenges Chinese immigrants faced during that time period, including anti-Asian violence and the Chinese Exclusion Act.Then, Curtis reflects on how his intersectional identity as an Asian American, working-class person, and closeted gay youth collided in formative experiences, such as an incident at the restaurant involving a drag queen customer. He shares how the writing process allowed him to revisit and process these complex identity issues. You can get your hands on Curtis' book and learn more about his writing here:www.curtisfromdetroit.comFollow Curtis on IG,@curtischin8Follow ITBR on IG,@ivorytowerboilerroom and TikTok,@ivorytowerboilerroomOur Sponsors:To subscribe to The Gay and Lesbian Review visit glreview.org. Georgia Power and state regulators reached a tentative agreement last week to expand Georgia Power's fossil fuel infrastructure and increase the company's battery storage footprint. The agreement still needs approval from the Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC). WABE climate reporter Emily Jones discusses her recent article that dives into the agreement and explains why some consumer and environmental advocates and customers have concerns. Jones also discusses why PSC elections won't be held this year and a lawsuit challenging the system the state uses to elect commissioners. INSERT: The Sandersville Railroad company has been working to acquire portions of land in the city of Sparta in Hancock County, through eminent domain to construct a 4.5-mile rail spur to serve a nearby quarry. A hearing officer with the Georgia Public Service Commission ruled in favor of the railroad company. We revisit Rose's conversation with Janet and Mark Smith and Ben Tarbutton, the president of Sandersville Railroad. Plus, New York Times bestselling author Tiffany Jewell discusses her new book, "Everything I Learned about Racism I Learned in School." In the book, the longtime educator explores the inequities Black and Brown students face from preschool through college. welcome back to hostels in hawaii. our first episode back we are just going to catch up and take a walk down memory lane… here's everything i experienced and learned from each month of 2023.
If you have been a long time listener of HVH, there has been a running joke between us and Everything I Learned from Movies Podcast. Six years later, we are finally going to end the joke and review Steel! Steve and Izzy are here with us of course but we also had a surprise visit from PJ! We also talked about "finger blasting," turkey hot dogs, other bad comic movies from 1997, Anita shows Steve some love and I most likely make a lot of listeners upset with my thoughts about this film compared to another we recently reviewed... Curtis Chin spent a lot of his childhood at his family's Chinese restaurant in Detroit. At one point, he assumed that he, like his father and grandparents, would spend his life there. Instead, he became a writer and filmmaker. John Yang speaks with Chin about his memoir, "Everything I Learned, I Learned in a Chinese Restaurant," and lessons from his family's restaurant that shaped his worldview. This week, Steve and Izzy from Everything I Learned from Movies are on the show to talk about the 1986 cult classic Cobra. Travis had never seen it before. Sylvester Stallone is Marion "Cobra" Cobretti, a LA cop who plays by his own rules. He's trying to stop the Night Slasher, and save a model in the process. Car chases, shootouts, one liners, and the most unhinged way of cutting a pizza you'll ever see are all in this one. But does it deserve the cult classic status? Is it 80s cheese in a good way? Let's find out...Thanks go out to Audie Norman (@TheAudieNorman) for the album art. Dennis is joined via Zoom by author Curtis Chin to discuss his new memoir Everything I Learned, I Learned In A Chinese Restaurant, which is about his upbringing as one of six kids raised by parents who owned a Chinese restaurant in downtown Detroit called Chung's. Curtis talks about what a magical place Chung's was and what it was like to visit it recently when it was sealed up and abandoned. He also recalls how his parents encouraged him to talk to and befriend everyone who came to Chung's and how that openness has helped him in his life. He also talks about his deep love for his hometown of Detroit even though he knew five people who had been murdered by the time he was 18, including Vincent Chin, whose much-publicized case inspired Curtis to become a writer. Curtis also talks about realizing he was gay and enjoying himself with a stolen International Male catalog in the walk-in freezer of Chung's because that was the only place he could be alone. Other topics include: going to Boys State as a teen, being a young Republican like Alex P. Keaton on Family Ties, the movie star who came into Chung's and was a total jerk, why his mother was so pissed at Ronald Reagan, coming out to his parents in a Bob's Big Boy and the stories from readers he's heard on his extensive book tour that move him to tears. www.curtisfromdetroit.com
Curtis Chin spent most of his childhood looking for a comfortable place to sit. And that was especially difficult for Chin, who grew up in the 1970s and 80s as one of six kids raised by parents who owned Chung's Cantonese Cuisine, one of the most revered Chinese restaurants in Detroit. Despite its location in one of the roughest neighborhoods in the city, the restaurant sold more than four thousand egg rolls every week and was frequented by celebrities like Joni Mitchell, Smokey Robinson, and Senator Eugene McCarthy. On this episode of Paternal, Chin reflects on the experience of growing up in the sweaty back kitchen of a Chinese restaurant, and reflects on what he learned from his father, a charismatic waiter who happily welcomed local dignitaries from City Hall along with pimps and prostitutes from down the block. Chin also discusses the challenge of being a gay man during the height of the AIDS crisis, and the legacy of Chung's, which made an unexpected return to his life long after he thought he'd left it behind. Chin's memoir, Everything I Learned, I Learned in a Chinese Restaurant, is available wherever you buy books. Curtis Chin was practically raised at Chung's Cantonese Cuisine, his family's restaurant in Detroit. It was a restaurant that served everybody, from the mayor (who was a regular) to sex workers to business executives. Within the walls of the restaurant, the Chin family saw the rise of Detroit as a multicultural, industrial city, and its decline in the wake of white flight and the crack epidemic. Chung's was also the place where Curtis started to figure out his own identity and sexuality — while also learning how to make the Detroit Chinese-American specialty, almond boneless chicken.Curtis's memoir is Everything I Learned, I Learned in a Chinese Restaurant.
