Duncan MacKenzie and Ryan Peter Miller drive up to the Dunn Museum in Libertyville, IL to talk with legendary comics painter Alex Ross. Known for Marvels, Kingdom Come, and decades of redefining superhero realism, Ross reflects on his career trajectory, his education at the American Academy of Art, his influences (from Neal Adams to Dave McKean), his early breaks with Now Comics and Leo Burnett storyboarding, and his transition into large-scale mural projects for Marvel and DC. The conversation ranges from comics history, realism in superhero depictions, variant cover economics, the physicality of superheroes, to America's appetite for dystopian narratives versus a return to the “pure Superman.” Ross is candid, funny, and deeply reflective about the comics medium, painting, and storytelling. Kaminski's entry into comics was inspired by classic series and publications, shaping his understanding of the comic creation process at an early age. The Superman editorial philosophy combines elements from various iconic eras, emphasizing a vision inspired by the 90s Animated Series and Fleischer cartoons. A unified visual style for the Super Family has been implemented, with distinct designs to maintain Superman's uniqueness within the group. Current Superman publishing strategy includes three core titles, each catering to different narratives, with significant arcs like Action #1100 planned for fall 2026. The Legion of Darkseid storyline is a pivotal upcoming focus across Superman issues, essential for the future of DC Comics. Kaminski champions Atomic Skull as an underutilized villain, highlighting previous successful narratives like Phil Jimenez's Superwoman work. Plans for Zod storylines are in development, with original concepts influenced by sci-fi classics like Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan. He advises artists to specialize in genres and network at conventions, while encouraging writers to start with smaller companies or licensed comics. Kaminski addresses misconceptions about creators' intentions, advocating for fans to read comics with an open mind regarding character developments. Notes ️ Paul Kaminski's Background and Role (01:50 - 11:15) Paul Kaminski serves as Group Editor for Metropolis Group at DC Comics, overseeing Superman titles, Green Lantern, Aquaman, Flash, Green Arrow, and Justice League. DC Comics currently operates three editorial groups: Metropolis Group, Gotham Group, and newly formed Themyscira Group led by Brittany Holzer. Kaminski has 17 years of experience in comics industry, starting at Archie Comics and working on Sonic the Hedgehog before joining DC in 2015. Getting Into Comics and Career Development (03:09 - 12:31) Kaminski's entry into comics began with X-Men animated series at age 7-8, followed by purchasing Wolverine #76 and Death of Superman trade paperback. Pizza Hut X-Men video featuring Bob Harris, Fabian Nicieza, and Scott Lobdell was formative in understanding comic creation process. Early editorial experience involved learning hands-on approach vs. hands-off approach to editing, with first major lesson being 'editing is not writing the comic yourself.' ️ Superman Editorial Philosophy and Approach (19:23 - 20:46) Kaminski's Superman vision draws from 90s Animated Series, combining elements of Fleischer cartoons, George Reeves TV show, and Triangle Era comics. Hired Joshua Williamson as writer for Superman relaunch based on their successful collaboration on Dark Crisis. Selected Jamal Campbell as artist after being impressed by his work on Naomi, particularly Superman fight scene. Super Family Organization and Visual Identity (32:03 - 32:03) Implemented unified visual style for Super Family with matching jackets designed by Dan Mora, inspired by Jim Lee's X-Men era. Action Comics #1051 cover serves as mission statement for organized Super Family approach. Superman intentionally remains only cape-wearing member to maintain visual distinction within the family. Current and Future Superman Publishing Strategy (13:51 - 40:27) Three core Superman titles serve different purposes: Superman (future/All-In storylines), Superman Unlimited (present-day Kryptonite kingdom stories), Action Comics (past/Superboy canonical stories). Action #1100 is being planned for fall 2026 with major story arc. Legion of Darkseid storyline spans Superman issues #28-30 as crucial future DC direction. ️ Character Development and Villain Preferences (36:00 - 39:04) Strong advocacy for Atomic Skull as underutilized villain, praising Phil Jimenez's rehabilitation storyline in Superwoman. Plans brewing for Zod storylines with hints being dropped across current issues. 'Kneel Before Zod' book was originally inspired by Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan approach, even approaching director Nick Meyer to write it. Industry Advice and Misconceptions (16:39 - 43:08) For artists: Focus on specific genre specialization and build community networks through conventions and local studios. For writers: Target small companies first, pursue licensed comics as entry point, especially Star Trek. Biggest fan misconception: Creators aren't intentionally trying to destroy favorite characters - encourages reading comics 'in good faith.'

Rob Liefeld returns to the CBH podcast talking about Youngblood hitting its stride, Extreme Studios becomes a hothouse of new series: Brigade, Bloodstrike, and nearly two dozen more, all while he mentors rising talents Dan Fraga, Norm Rapmund and more. Mounting costs inside Image spark sharp discussions with Jim Lee, Todd McFarlane, and Mark Silvestri, nudging Liefeld to open Maximum Press for experiments like Battlestar Galactica and Avengelyne. He talks about his exit from Image and his stint on Marvel's Heroes Reborn, where his Captain America made headlines amidst Marvel's bankruptcy. Recharged, he launches Awesome Comics, partners with Alan Moore for an Award‑winning Supreme, and joins Golden Age legend Joe Simon to shield Fighting American in court. A family walk through Greek ruins now feeds the mythic spark in Cable, Deadpool, and their Fortnite cameos. Royalties still arrive, proof that owning your stories keeps the dream alive, which is a lesson his friend Robert Kirkman echoes with Walking Dead and Invincible. #RobLiefeld #Youngblood #ExtremeStudios #ImageComics #CreatorRights #HeroesReborn #CaptainAmerica #MaximumPress #AlanMoore #Deadpool Support the show

Veteran Wall Street observer Bob Doll, chief investment officer at Crossmark Global Investments, returns to the show to review how his annual predictions for the year ahead are turning out midway into 2025, and despite the headlines and the volatility and uncertainty surrounding the market, Doll appears to be on pace for his best year ever, with at least nine of his forecasts looking like they might finish the year in the money. Doll says the stock market may not have much more upside left this year, particularly if the Federal Reserve doesn't lower rates and inflation stays higher for longer, but even if those things mute the market, he doesn't think they will send it falling significantly from here. Jim Lee, founder of StratFi, says that benign long-term trends for stocks have made him somewhat bullish, leading him to expect gains for the market in the 5 to 10% range for the rest of the year. He says the lower-growth economy remains expansionary, almost a Goldilocks situation for the economics, though he notes that politics continue to take the clarity out of these conditions and will keep making investors nervous. Nick Maggiulli, chief operating officer of Ritholtz Wealth Management and blogger at Of Dollars and Data brings his numbers-driven approach to retirement planning in his new book, "The Wealth Ladder: Proven Strategies for Every Step of Your Financial Life." He discusses the book — and how consumers can determine how much they can comfortably spend each day and more — in the Book Interview.

He explained how he approached 10 different artists, all friends of Sale's, to contribute to "Last Halloween". For "Hush 2," with Jim Lee, which will be released as a 12-part story split into two six-issue arcs.Loeb emphasized that the story will not interfere with Matt Fraction's Batman run and will end with a cliffhanger. He also noted that "Hush 2" will be released monthly, with the second half likely coming out after a few month's break

Recorded live at the Comics Without Borders / Sans Frontières gathering at Rice University, this episode dives deep into international comics publishing, aesthetic risk-taking, and how underground networks drive a truly global comics culture. David Schilter, publisher and editor of Latvia's acclaimed kuš! comics, joins us alongside Pedro Vieira de Moura, Portuguese critic, writer, and co-founder of the bookstore/gallery Mundo Fantasma. We talk about how a small-format anthology changed Latvian comics forever, why RAW magazine changed Pedro's life, and how comics have always been a place for outsiders to find their people. It's about pornographic comics, lipstick in mirrors, misnumbered anthologies, institutional resistance, aesthetic weirdness, bookstores as public educators, and why no one in Latvia is publishing Maus. A little bit of a late start tonight, but it will be a good one. I invited Jim Lee (ClimateViewer.com) on to tackle some 'Earth Month' news, including a proverbial needle-in-the-haystack story coming out of UK over Sun-Dimming; Catherine Herridge's expose` on Directed Energy Weapons; and then news of massive blackouts in Spain caused by extreme 'atmospheric conditions'. Should be more than enough to sink our teeth into, as well as some input from the audience. Remember that tomorrow (Tuesday) is Lauren's birthday, so I will not be on air, but we return Wednesday with great guests and topics that'll stretch us all the way through the rest of the week!
