The Kansas City Council is bringing back its efforts to ban conversion therapy after it repealed a 2019 ordinance last month. Council member Jonathan Duncan discusses how the new proposal restricting "dangerous therapies" is intended to comply with a recent Supreme Court ruling.

An ordinance proposed by Mayor Quinton Lucas and 6th District City Council member Johnathan Duncan would restrict practitioners from receiving payment for practices that increase the risk of suicide and depression. It's intended to avoid challenges stemming from a U.S. Supreme Court ruling and a lawsuit from the Missouri Attorney General.
Jonny interviews local drag superstar Leah Fantasy about their life, their experiences growing up nonbinary and Southern Illinois, and their amazing performances in local venues. They discuss the vibe needed for this year's Pride and how to generate it. In the back third of the show, Heather and Jonny discuss the flexibility of labels in the Alphabet Soup and why we need to claim and deploy them gently.

Is it now a criminal offence to pray for someone struggling with gender confusion? Could a parent face prosecution for affirming their child's biological sex? Bob McCoskrie of Family First joins Dane to unpack the Conversion Practices Prohibition Legislation Act 2022 — and why he believes it should be repealed immediately. Bob explains how the law's vague definitions, the removal of consent as a legal defence, and its deliberate one-directional design have created a chilling effect on counsellors, parents, and religious communities alike. He makes a striking argument: now that the government has banned puberty blockers, the conversion therapy law is actively fighting itself — criminalising the very parental behaviour the government now endorses. The conversation also covers the under-16 social media ban debate (Bob's answer is more nuanced than you'd expect), the lessons from the 2020 cannabis referendum, and why shutting down debate always backfires. Amanda Smith lived as a lesbian for 12 years. She dressed like a man, dated feminine women, and was convinced God had made her that way. Then, alone in a new city with nothing but a Bible her mom had given her, everything changed. Dr. Jennifer Roback Morse sits down with Amanda Smith, a staff missionary with Desert Stream Living Waters, to talk about the journey out of a lesbian identity, the real contributing factors behind same-sex attraction, and what the Church gets right — and wrong — when walking alongside people in sexual and relational brokenness.

Jonny and Heather face the summer with news of Southern Illinois Pride plans. This information has recently been circulated on local social media. In the process, of course, lots of anti-Pride community members have had...."interesting" things to say about Pride. Jonny and Heather remind them that their comments are public and turn to rebutting the common propaganda talking points critical of Pride and the LGBTQ+ community. In the back half of the show they run with the theme of why (this year especially) Pride is so necessary because of the ludicrous, systemic discriminations against queer and trans people.

The recent U.S. Supreme Court decision in Chiles v. Salazar doesn't really close the case – but it also doesn't really leave it open. The 8-1 decision, in which the nation's highest court ruled that a Colorado ban on so-called “conversion therapy” for juveniles was unconstitutional, is subtle, complex, and unnerving; the American Psychological Association issued a statement noting that it was “deeply concerned” over it. The case relates to conversion therapy as talk therapy, specifically related to gender identity and First Amendment rights. But the decision only remands the matter for further review by the Tenth Circuit, thus leaving the issue essentially undecided. Is this just more judicial “Calvinball” – the game highlighted in the classic comic strip Calvin and Hobbes, in which the rules are made up on the fly – or is the Court simply assuring another bite at this apple? On March 31st of this year, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of a therapist in Colorado who argued that the state's ban on conversion therapy violated her freedom of speech. While the ruling does not endorse conversion therapy, it does allow the practice to continue, despite the fact that conversion therapy has been widely debunked as pseudoscience and dramatically increases the risk of depression and suicide in queer and trans youth. To understand the ruling and its impact, we hear from Mother Jones reporter Madison Pauly, who has been following the insidious rise of anti-trans conversion therapy, and Shannon Minter, the Legal Director of the National Center for LGBTQ Rights, who has been at the forefront of the legal battles for queer and trans rights for decades. The forthcoming episode features an incisive dialogue with Dr. Rev. Leah Robinson, an esteemed scholar and author, who shares her insights regarding her upcoming book, "Born Perfect or Boy Erased: A Journey with Survivors of Conversion Therapy." At the forefront of our discussion is the critical examination of conversion therapy, illuminating its harrowing implications for individuals, particularly within the LGBTQ+ community. Dr. Robinson, whose academic tenure spans several prestigious institutions, brings her expertise in practical theology to bear on this pressing issue, advocating for a deeper understanding of the detrimental effects of such practices. Throughout the episode, we engage with her experiences, the theological underpinnings of conversion therapy, and the imperative for a compassionate and informed discourse within the church. This conversation not only sheds light on the experiences of survivors but also challenges the prevailing narratives that perpetuate harm in the name of faith.A profound discourse unfolds as Reverend Dr. Leah Robinson, a distinguished scholar and advocate, engages in a compelling dialogue concerning her imminent literary work, which critically examines the contentious practice of conversion therapy. This episode serves as a poignant exploration of the theological underpinnings that have historically justified such harmful practices, juxtaposed with the harrowing narratives of those who have suffered under its doctrine. Dr. Robinson elucidates the insidious nature of bad theology, which manifests as oppression disguised in the guise of divine mandate, particularly affecting the LGBTQ community. As she articulates the multifaceted dangers associated with conversion therapy, she emphasizes the urgent need for the church to recognize and rectify its role in perpetuating harm, thereby fostering an environment of acceptance and healing. The conversation also delves into the broader implications of conversion therapy on mental health, highlighting the alarming rates of suicide and psychological distress among its survivors, thus catalyzing a call to action for both individuals and institutions to advocate for change and support inclusive theological frameworks.Takeaways:Dr. Rev Leah Robinson's upcoming book addresses the harmful impact of conversion therapy on LGBTQ individuals and the flawed theology that supports such practices. The podcast explores the historical context of conversion therapy, highlighting shifts in theological perspectives from the 1990s to present.Leah emphasizes the importance of understanding personal experiences of conversion therapy survivors to foster empathy and compassion within the church. The conversation challenges listeners to reflect on their own theological beliefs and how they may affect others' lives, particularly marginalized communities.Robinson advocates for a broader dialogue within the church about acceptance and support for LGBTQ individuals, emphasizing unity despite differing beliefs. The episode underscores the necessity of addressing bad theology and its real-world consequences, particularly in relation to mental health and suicide rates among LGBTQ youth.

In light of the Colorado Supreme Court case Charles v. Salazar and prior conversation with Julia Sadusky and other conversations with Side X guests, we dig into Conversion Therapy (also called Reparative or Reintegrative Therapy), particularly how it intersects notions around the fluidity of sexuality. Reports on sexual fluidity opens new questions to the ethics of conversation therapies, and maybe different analysis has to why the “change is possible” narratives (e.g. Exodus Ministries) were so destructive. But maybe alternative approaches like “bisexual responsiveness” via Camille Paglia (see the linked Cracks in Postmodernity essay) suggest a different outlook on the whole affair, and open doors to intriguing considerations of the queer experience and same-sex friendship/romantic friendship.References:A fascinating article with so many intriguing quotes:Cracks in Postmodernity: Conversion Therapy vs. Bisexual ResponsivenessOur episodes about/with Side X guests:#54 - Side B & Side X in Dialogue: With Jason Thompson from Portland Fellowship#48 - What Is Transformation? with Agape First Ministries#41 - Unexpected Shifts: Josh's Story of Prayer, Healing, and Attraction#35 - Marco Casanova on Integration, Healing, and OrientationTime Stamps:00:00 Have you thought of joining us at Revoice?02:31 Kinship Lab on Conversion Therapy04:09 Sexual Fluidity Debate06:33 Tyler's Harvard Story10:46 Exodus and Pray Away Documentary14:39 Modern Reorientation Claims19:14 Identity Versus Desire/Attraction24:25 Side B Growth and Chastity28:19 Defining Attraction, Sanctification and Bisexual Responsiveness35:36 On Noticing Beauty and Desire40:53 Paglia and Rigid Labels45:50 Sexual Category Origins, Queer Identity, and Fluidity51:29 Friendship Versus Therapy57:14 Chastity and Same Sex Love01:04:35 Romantic Friendship Debate01:06:07 Humility and Closing Thoughts Get full access to New Kinship at newkinship.substack.com/subscribe

The U.S. Supreme Court has just issued a new landmark ruling. Specifically, in an 8-to-1 decision, the Supreme Court found that Colorado's ban on “conversion therapy” is unconstitutional—and violates the first amendment rights of Christian therapists.Let's go through the details of this particular case—as well as what it means for the rest of the country.
On March 31st — just two weeks ago — the Supreme Court ruled that the state of Colorado couldn't ban conversion therapy for minors. They called it a matter of “free speech.”But to the nearly 700,000 LGBTQ+ Americans who have gone through conversion therapy, it's a lot more than an abstract issue about free speech. It's a trauma they're still dealing with, even if it happened to them years or decades ago.One of those 700,000 is Drew Amstutz, Red Wine & Blue's Chief of Staff and all-around delightful human. On this week's podcast, he shared some of the horrifying details of being forced through conversion therapy as a 15-year-old kid. Please be warned if you have trauma around religion or sexual harassment; Drew's story is hard to hear. But it's still happening every day to kids across the country, so it's crucial that we talk about it. LGBTQ+ youth who go through conversion therapy face a higher suicide risk — not just while they're experiencing it, but for the rest of their lives. It's a practice that manipulates parents into traumatizing their kids for simply being themselves. When you hear about a 60-year-old man breaking down a 15-year-old child, including techniques like gaslighting and sexual harassment, it's hard not to draw connections to other powerful abusers like Epstein. Again and again, we see this country protect the rich and powerful and cast aside women and children. The episode wasn't all doom and gloom, though! After discussion Drew's personal story, we talked about joy in the LGBTQ+ community. When so many powerful forces — from the government to your parents — are telling you that who you are is wrong, fun and community can be lifesaving. This episode is honest and heartbreaking, but it's also joyful and full of love. Despite the trauma he experienced, Drew is one of the most kind, uplifting, and competent people that all of us here at Red Wine & Blue have ever had the pleasure to meet. We know you'll love him too. ❤️For a transcript of this episode, please email comms@redwine.blue. You can learn more about us at www.redwine.blue or follow us on social media! In this episode, Hunter and Autumn consider the Supreme Court's decision in Chiles v. Salazar and what it means for counselors, parents, and the future of conversion therapy—an umbrella term for therapies aimed at changing sexual orientation or gender identity. Using recent reporting from WORLD and Colorado Public Radio, they discuss the competing claims at the heart of the case—free speech versus harm—and ask questions about desire, identity, and the roles of counsel and the gospel in helping people pursue God's good design.Resources mentioned in this episode:Former state lawmaker ‘devastated' and ‘disgusted' as Supreme Court overturns Colorado's ban on conversion therapy - CPR NewsCounselors feel new freedom after Chiles ruling - WORLD magSupreme Court overturns Colorado ban on conversion therapy - Rocky Mountain PBSIs God Anti-Gay? by Sam Allberry

In 2019, Colorado Gov. Jared Polis, the first openly gay governor elected in the U.S., signed a bill banning conversion therapy in the state. Last week, the Supreme Court ruled that ban may be unconstitutional.Conversion therapy seeks to change someone's sexual orientation or gender identity. The practice has been deemed unethical and ineffective by most major mental health groups. And a study from the Trevor Project found that young people who go through conversion therapy were more than twice as likely to have reported attempting suicide compared to those who did not.Only one Supreme Court justice dissented in this case. Ketanji Brown Jackson wrote that this decision “opens a dangerous can of worms” and “threatens to impair states' ability to regulate the provision of medical care in any respect.”What's behind the Supreme Court's decision that will likely overturn this ban? And how might this decision affect nearly two dozen other states that have similar bans?Find more of our programs online. Conversion therapy is back in the headlines—and it may be closer to home than you think. Today, we're unpacking the reality of conversion therapy: what it teaches, how it operates, and the lasting impact it can have on identity, spirituality, and healing. In light of the Supreme Court's recent ruling in Chiles v. Salazar, this conversation feels more urgent than ever. To help us do this, we have Timothy Schraeder Rodriguez, author of the upcoming book Conversion Therapy Dropout (May 5). Through Tim's personal story, we explore the pull of religious spaces, the promise of belonging, and the painful unraveling that can follow. In this episode of Straight White American Jesus, hosts Brad Onishi and Dan Miller unpack a chaotic and revealing week at the intersection of politics, religion, and power. As Donald Trump once again compares himself to Jesus during the lead-up to Easter, the hosts explore what they see as a deepening pattern of religious distortion within MAGA Christianity—where theological consistency gives way to political loyalty. The conversation situates Trump's rhetoric alongside broader trends, including a controversial decision tied to U.S. Supreme Court on conversion therapy laws and mounting concerns over religious favoritism within the Pentagon under Pete Hegseth. Together, these developments paint a picture of a movement increasingly defined by power, hierarchy, and ideological purity rather than coherent moral or theological principles. The episode also dives into the implications of an 8–1 Supreme Court ruling that weakens state-level bans on conversion therapy, raising urgent questions about free speech, medical ethics, and the vulnerability of LGBTQ+ individuals. Onishi and Miller highlight the emotional and political weight of the decision, especially amid rising hostility toward queer and trans communities. They close with a discussion of the scandal surrounding Kristi Noem and her husband, using it as a lens to push hypocrisy, gender norms, and the authoritarian logic of “order” that underpins Christian nationalism. Despite the heaviness of the topics, the hosts end with cautious optimism, pointing to signs of political pushback and everyday acts of resistance as reasons for hope. USA Today (4/1/26) This week on CounterSpin: In Chiles vs. Salazar, the Supreme Court ruled that Colorado's law prohibiting health practitioners from employing the widely discredited practice of trying to “convert” young people from their sexual orientation or gender identity violates healthcare workers' First Amendment rights. We'll hear about what the ruling does and doesn't do, and how news media might better explain it, from Shannon Minter, legal director at the National Center for LGBTQ Rights. https://media.blubrry.com/counterspin/content.blubrry.com/counterspin/CounterSpin260403Minter.mp3 Local News Day Also on the show: April 9 is Local News Day, a new project aimed at lifting up the value of truly local news outlets in an increasingly consolidated media landscape. Today's Headlines: Trump gave a primetime Oval Office address to declare the Iran war is winding down and all military objectives have been met, while blaming NATO for the Strait of Hormuz still being closed. The same Strait he started a war over is now apparently not a "core objective." Two thousand five hundred Marines are still en route to the Middle East. He also became the first sitting president to personally attend his own Supreme Court oral arguments — on birthright citizenship — where even conservative justices appeared skeptical. Then he signed an executive order creating a federal citizenship list to restrict mail-in ballots and voting eligibility, despite the Constitution giving the federal government no authority over elections. Lawsuits incoming in 3, 2, 1.Republicans largely caved on the 47-day DHS shutdown — TSA, FEMA, the Coast Guard, and CISA will be funded, while ICE and CBP funding gets handled separately, because Democrats held the line on basic law enforcement accountability. Trump responded by telling the Telegraph he's strongly considering pulling the U.S. out of NATO, calling it a "paper tiger — and Putin knows that too, by the way." Cool thing to share publicly! A joint investigation by The Post and Courier corroborated accounts from an Epstein victim who told the FBI four times in 2019 that Trump sexually assaulted her when she was 13 years old in 1984. Dozens of pages from her FBI interviews were missing from the Epstein files dump until their absence was flagged by a journalist — some were released under public pressure, not all. Warren Buffett revealed he hasn't spoken to Bill Gates since the Epstein files dropped, saying he doesn't want to be called as a witness. Pete Hegseth reversed the suspension of the Army pilots who buzzed Kid Rock's house, tweeting "No punishment. No investigation. Carry on, patriots." Today's Headlines: Trump is reportedly ready to declare victory in Iran and walk away — even if the Strait of Hormuz stays closed — because keeping it open would exceed his preferred timeline. Gas prices with a 4 or 5 as the first digit are the new normal, indefinitely. The U.S. simultaneously sent a third aircraft carrier to the region. Then the IRGC published a target list of 18 American companies — Apple, Google, Microsoft, Meta, Nvidia, Tesla, Oracle, Palantir, Chase, and Boeing among them — with strikes planned starting April 1st, prompting immediate evacuations of employees and anyone within a kilometer of their facilities. January 6th insurrectionists — including a pardoned Proud Boy who threw chairs at officers and a man convicted of child molestation after receiving his pardon — filed an $18 million class action lawsuit against the federal government for excessive force during the insurrection. With the DOJ already paying Babbitt's estate $5 million and Flynn $1.25 million, the math isn't crazy. On transvisibility day, the Supreme Court ruled 8-1 to strike down Colorado's conversion therapy ban for LGBTQ minors — a ruling that will overturn similar bans in 20+ states, with Ketanji Brown Jackson the lone dissent. Additionally, the Daily Mail published allegations that Kristi Noem's husband has been living a secret cross-dressing double life. Noem's team says she's "devastated and blindsided." In Shit With Trump's Name On It: a federal judge blocked the $400 million White House ballroom, ruling Trump is the "steward" not the "owner." Palm Beach airport was renamed Donald J. A guerrilla art group installed a gold marble toilet on the National Mall with a plaque reading "A Throne Fit for a King." Finally, NASA's Artemis II launches tonight at 6:24pm ET — first lunar mission since 1972, no landing, just a test run for 2028 and an Army Apache was caught hovering over Kid Rock's pool after detouring from a No Kings protest flyover. Kid Rock said they'd be fine because his "buddy is the Commander-in-Chief."
