This episode features Tyler Lau, trail name: The Prodigy (@thehikingprodigy). He’s hiked over 8,000 miles in his lifetime including the Pacific Crest Trail, the John Muir Trail, and the Colorado Trail. He is one of 9 people to have completed a Calendar Year Triple Crown and the first person of color to do so. He is an active advocate for conservation and diversity in the outdoors.
The Prodigy, known off trail as Tyler Lau, caught the thru hiking bug in 2016 when he hiked the PCT. Or maybe it was earlier when he became part of the crews that do trail maintenance. I’ve talked to individuals who have done each of the trails & even some who’ve done all three. However, on December 29, 2018 he became the 10th person and first person of color to do all 3 in a single calendar year. I think his words sum it up best...“ in the end I tell people I just went for a really long walk.”
Tyler Lau his an experienced member of trail crews and even teaches HOW to build trails the right way. On this episode we dive into how trails are designed, built, and maintained. We also chat about the do's and don'ts along where we as hikers can help keep trails in their proper conditions so trail crews can attend to other trails in need of maintenance. We also spend some time discussing diversity in the outdoors. Tyler is the first person of color to complete the Calendar Year Triple Crown so I wanted to take the opportunity to find out what Tyler's experience has been and how he sees diversity in the outdoor industry.By Land,Emory R. Jeff Garmire has logged 21 thousand miles and counting at the time of this episode being aired. Funny thing is, you wouldn't really know it because he doesn't exactly care to shout it from the rooftops. Rather, he goes about his business by chasing his passion, learning, and trying new things. On trail, Jeff goes by “Legend.” As such, I figured it would be beneficial to pick the brain of someone who has hiked so many miles, completed a Calendar Year Triple Crown, attempted and completed the FKT of the Arizona Trail, and countless other endeavors. You don't have to want to follow in Jeff's footsteps in order to learn something from him. What Jeff knows can apply to literally any backpacking trip, big or small, that you will ever do. We cover everything from his early days, to how he deals with the mental struggles of the trail, speed versus efficiency, and his latest AZ Trail adventure. You name it, we cover it and Jeff does so in a way that isn't intimidating or hard to follow. This episode is no doubt packed full of great talking points!By Land,Emory R. This week we look at the Assange arrest, an irresponsible security researcher affecting the WordPress community and do a bit of a thought experiment. We also look at Google's Sensorvault and how it's being used by law enforcement, the fascinating rise and fall of the Bayrob malware gang, and some tips for avoiding a new AirBnB scam. I also talked to Tyler Lau at WordCamp Phoenix last month, and we share that interview with you today. Tyler is the Social Community Manager at Sandhills Development. Sandhills makes some very popular plugins including Easy Digital Downloads and AffiliateWP. We talked about the WordPress community, WordPress in general and some of the cool things that Sandhills is involved in. Tyler “The Prodigy” Lau completed the Calendar Year Triple Crown in 2018. That means, he hiked the PCT, CDT, and AT all in one single year. That's a huge accomplishment and one that he'll probably be digesting for years to come.On this episode, I have the opportunity to pick his brain about why, how, and what it all means now that it's over with. To say the least, there is a load of great information in this episode and it's coming from a guy who just spent a lot of time on trail going through some incredible landscapes and situations. Please enjoy!By Land,Emory R. Mighty Blue On The Appalachian Trail: The Ultimate Mid-Life Crisis
The awesome Tyler Lau is a man on a mission. Not only has he completed a Calendar Year Triple Crown, but he is also working for more diversity on the trails of America. An Asian American, he volunteers to support his various social projects and truly walks the walk. He started a Go Fund Me page to sponsor the various causes. You can find that at www.gofundme.com/8000milesto8000smiles. He hasn't had the chance to fully absorb the scale of his walking achievement and is slowly adjusting to life back with other people. Tyler's experience is considerably different from many others, with the sheer size of his hike pushing him to eschew the traditional end of one hike as he heads to another. That he took on this task to be a catalyst for change is a fine example of using his outdoor skills to benefit others. You can follow Tyler on several platforms: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/HikingProdigy-202569297197744/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hikingprodigy/ He has a website currently under construction which will be available soon: http://www.hikingprodigy.com/ Similarly, his YouTube channel is under construction and will be at hikingprodigy when it is available. If you'd like to reach out to Tyler, his email address is hikingprodigy@gmail.com We return to my non-preparation for my upcoming hike of the AT. Listeners have offered their input and some decisions are hardening. Hopefully, by the time I get onto the trail, I'll be ready.
Tyler Lau, otherwise known as The Hiking Prodigy, is one of only eleven human beings on earth to complete a Calendar Year Triple Crown hike. He hiked the Appalachian Trail, the Pacific Crest Trail, and the Continental Divide Trail, roughly 8,000 miles, all in the year 2018. Join us as we walk through (ha) his entire Triple Crown hike, talking in-depth about the limits you must push your mind to when hiking the length of the United States three times in one year. Please consider donating to Tyler's fundraiser 8,000 miles To 8,000 Smiles. Follow The Hiking Prodigy on Instagram, Facebook, and check out his website! Like what you hear? Want to talk some smack?
