Everyone who has a foot in the world of psychiatric diagnosis seems to agree that our diagnostic system could, at the very least, use some updating, if not burning it down and starting over.So how do we approach developing constructs of psychiatric diagnoses that are more complex, more accurate, more flexible, and more context-specific than what we've been taught or what exists in the DSM-V?Today, I'm excited to share my conversation with Dr. Miri Forbes, an expert in psychopathology and one of the authors of the paper, “Reconstructing Psychopathology: A Data-Driven Reorganization of the Symptoms in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.” Dr. Forbes and her colleagues are doing innovative research on creating more empirically-supported diagnostic constructs. This approach to symptoms, categorization, and how we think about and use diagnostic constructs is one that I hope will help us get out of the habit of taking our current diagnostic constructs too literally.Dr. Forbes, an Associate Professor at Macquarie University's School of Psychological Sciences, is focused on improving our understanding of the empirical structure of psychopathology based on the specific patterns in which symptoms of mental disorders tend to co-occur.She is an Associate Editor of The Journal of Psychopathology and Clinical Science, and serves on the Editorial Boards of Clinical Psychological Science and The Journal of Emotion and Psychopathology. Additionally, Dr. Forbes is a member of the Executive Board of the international Hierarchical Taxonomy of Psychopathology (HiTOP) Consortium.Listen to the full episode to hear:How a dimensional model can potentially help decrease stigmatizing and pathologizing of individual human experiencesHow the regrouping of symptoms creates potential for more fruitful research into how and why symptoms cluster and how best to treat themWhy reliance on current categorization and diagnostic criteria can cause clinicians to miss or lose vital information about clientsReckoning with the utility of existing diagnoses like BPD that may lack statistical supportLearn more about Dr. Miri Forbes:WebsiteTwitter: @MiriForbesLearn more about Riva Stoudt:Into the Woods CounselingThe Kiln SchoolInstagram: @atherapistcantsaythatResources:Reconstructing Psychopathology: A data-driven reorganization of the symptoms in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders

They're knocking on the door of our capacity to know. They are not accidents, they're not incidental, they're not annoyances, they're not unfortunate. In this episode of Stay Grounded, Raj and his partner Natalie take us on a transformative journey through their experience at Burning Man. This annual event in Nevada's Black Rock Desert is far more than just a festival - it's a temporary city built on principles of radical self-expression, communal effort, and gifting. For one week, tens of thousands of participants create art, share experiences, and push the boundaries of their comfort zones in a unique environment that challenges societal norms and personal limitations.Key insights from Raj and Natalie's Burning Man adventure:The power of intention-setting in manifesting synchronistic experiencesHow radical self-reliance paradoxically fosters deep community connectionThe unexpected wisdom found in getting lost during a dust stormWhy play and childlike wonder can be profound tools for personal growthThe transformative potential of gifting without expectation of returnHow Burning Man serves as a "maturation ceremony" for many participantsThe delicate balance between sacred rituals and profane celebrationsThe challenge and reward of truly allowing oneself to receiveWhy preparing for Burning Man can be as enlightening as the event itselfHow the playa becomes a mirror, reflecting one's deepest essenceThe biggest takeaway from this episode is the profound personal growth that comes from releasing control and embracing the unknown. Raj and Natalie's experiences highlight how surrendering to the unpredictable nature of Burning Man - and by extension, life itself - opens doors to transformation, deeper connection, and a more authentic way of being. Their journey teaches us that true surrender isn't about giving up, but about opening up to the magic and potential of each moment.Connect with Natalie:Instagram: @thenatalieadeleYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@SatNamSocietyConnect with Raj:Website: http://www.rajjana.com/Instagram: @raj_janaiTunes: https://podcasts.apple.com/rs/podcast/stay-grounded-with-raj-jana/id1318038490Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/22Hrw6VWfnUSI45lw8LJBPYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@raj_janaLegal Disclaimer: The information and opinions discussed in this podcast are for educational and entertainment purposes only. In this episode, I sit down with Amita Sharma, co-founder of NourishDoc, a platform that focuses on integrative and holistic health solutions for women. We dive into the nuances of perimenopause and menopause, shedding light on what these life stages mean for women's bodies and minds.Perimenopause can start as early as the late 30s or mid-40s and may last up to 10 years before menopause fully sets in. Symptoms like night sweats, hot flashes, brain fog, and a decline in libido are all tied to fluctuating hormone levels, especially estrogen and progesterone. Amita explains how these hormonal changes impact mood, memory, and overall cognitive function. We also discuss the potential connection between hormonal imbalances and the increased risk of dementia, breast cancer, osteoporosis, and heart disease as women age.Lifestyle factors—such as poor diet, lack of exercise, and high stress—can trigger early menopause, which might explain why certain ethnic groups like African Americans, Latinas, and Indians are experiencing early perimenopause. Amita emphasizes the need for early awareness, preparation, and self-care strategies, encouraging women to proactively adopt healthier habits, including proper nutrition, stress management, and mindfulness practices. The episode also touches on natural solutions to alleviate perimenopause and menopause symptoms, including dietary changes, herbal supplementation, and holistic therapies like acupuncture, aromatherapy, hypnotherapy, breathing exercises, and cleanses. Amita highlights how alcohol and caffeine can worsen symptoms like hot flashes, making it crucial for women to limit or avoid them, especially during these pivotal stages in life. We explore how integrative approaches, such as those offered by NourishDoc, can support women during these transitions, helping them maintain balance without solely relying on hormone replacement therapy (HRT).Key topics covered in this episode:Hormonal shifts in perimenopause and their impact on mood, anxiety, and cognitionThe importance of lifestyle changes to prevent early menopauseNatural remedies and holistic therapies to manage symptomsCultural and ethnic differences in menopause experiencesHow to naturally cool down your body and reduce hot flashesWhy it's crucial for both women and men to be aware of these changesRESOURCESPEOPLE- Mario FieldsPODCASTS- Unarmored TalkVOCABULARY- buttermilk- CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy)- estrogen- hypothalamus- Kitchari cleanse- Meno belly- menopause- perimenopause- progesterone- Sitkari- Sitali**Connect or Learn More**website: nourishdoc.comLinkedIn: /nourishdocapp: coming soon! The speed of innovation and technological advances over the past decade has been transformative for all businesses, 100-year-old companies and growing startups alike. Baseball's storied history in America has played a huge role in its popularity, but like any other business, it's had to evolve to keep up with technology and customer expectations. St. Louis Cardinals President Bill DeWitt III and the MLB understood that their audience and their expectations were changing, and competition for entertainment was mounting due to smartphones, among other catalysts. This presented a unique challenge and opportunity for the game of baseball to adapt while remaining true to its beloved traditions. But Who's Counting? hosts Dave Hartley and Missy Kelley sat down with Bill to discuss his tenure with the Cardinals and what prompted changes to the game in 2023. They dig into the impact of technology on the game for fans and players, as well as:The role of data analytics in driving a better fan experience and operational improvementsWhy it's important to experiment with big changes before implementingWhy diversifying, both to cater to different audiences and in revenue streams, ultimately creates more satisfying experiencesHow technology has affected the game and the businessThe link between creativity and innovation“That's what baseball's insight was: how you frame the problem and how you communicate with fans who are so passionate about the game so that they understand that we're trying to create a better version of the game. It was a goal, a North Star, to find the best version of the game itself, and that appeals pretty much to everybody.” – Bill DeWitt IIIResources to Count OnCheck out these additional resources for more insight into the conversation:View the Cardinals' 2024 scheduleConnect with the Cardinals community online Make sure to never miss an episode by subscribing on Spotify, Pandora or Apple Podcasts and let us know what you think by rating and reviewing. This conversation covers details about 5-MeO-DMT that have not yet been explored seriously in the public sphere. We go far beyond the basics of this medicine as Steve Rio and I explore the nuances and complexities of the non-dual experience and integration process that follows. We also get into the somatic and nervous system benefits of this medicine.Steve Rio's understanding of this medicine has matured and deepened since we last dropped in three years ago (for episode 8; a great episode to learn the basics around 5-MeO-DMT). Steve is the co-founder of Enfold Institute, a place to experience a safe and sacred 5-MeO-DMT ceremony. He is a true embodiment of this medicine: humble, direct, pure and speaks from the heart. We recorded this conversation in late January, two months into my integration process at a time when I was really awakening to how powerful this medicine is. I share a few stories of some intense reactivations post-journey, and what I've been learning and integrating.Enjoy this raw and clear conversation — just like 5-MeO-DMT.Topics Covered:How 5-MeO-DMT differs from other psychedelicsHow to make sense of a non-dual experience in a dual worldTension while integrating an awakening experienceDissecting the non-dual experienceEnergetic release and nervous system resetThe rebirth experience during 5-MeO-DMTHow 5-MeO-DMT makes one more sensitive & the gift of sensitivityOpening up to and allowing all of life's experiencesHow to know if you're ready for 5-MeO-DMTMaintaining accountability and ethics as a 5-MeO-DMT facilitatorThe benefits of having visual documentation from a 5-MeO-DMT ceremonyReactivations after a 5-MeO-DMT experience, even months afterIncreased sensitivity to other substances after 5-MeO-DMTThe responsibility that come with awakening to non-dualityShow Links:Kanna Extract Co - 10% off with LANA at checkout1:1 Coaching with LanaEnfold InstituteEpisode 8 with Steve Rio (Apple | Spotify) Want more Modern Psychedelics?Instagram | YouTube | Web | Facebook Inspired to transform your life from the inside out, and integrate higher consciousness in your day to day life?Explore 1:1 Coaching with Lana or Apply Now This episode was produced in collaboration with FWI Media.
