Greg Walker, son of famous cartoonist Mort Walker drops by to chat about the new book out called 75 Years Of Smiles commemorating Mort Walker's long and dedicated commitment to cartooning!Greg Walker studied at Syracuse University and has worked in film, commercial photography, newspapers and graphic arts. He started his cartooning career writing and drawing comic books, including such well-know titles as Rocky and Bullwinkle, Barney and Betty Rubble, Underdog, Sarge Snorkel and Beetle Bailey. He began providing gags to his father's strips in the early 1970's and, in addition to writing, currently does the inking and lettering on Beetle Bailey. In the 1980's, Greg also collaborated with Guy and Brad Gilchrist on the Rock Channel comic strip and with brothers Brian, Neal and Morgan on Betty Boop and Felix!About the book Beetle Bailey: 75 Years Of SmilesOld cartoonists never die. They just erase away...' This was one of Mort Walker's favorite sayings, and until his final days, he lived by his motto, engaging millions of readers through his beloved comics. Walker had the longest tenure of any cartoonist on his original creation in the history of comics. He produced Beetle Bailey for 67 years, 3 months and 12 days - that's 24,576 strips. He penciled his last week of daily strips on December 16, 2017. Beetle Bailey: 75 Years Of Smiles is a coffee table retrospective commemorating Mort Walker's long and dedicated commitment to cartooning, spotlighting the anniversary of his most popular and beloved creation. In addition to the 75 Sunday pages reproduced from color syndicate proofs, 135 daily and Sunday strips scanned from original artwork, and close to 200 additional images, this beautifully designed volume, impeccably researched and written by his son Brian, also includes rare photographs, historic debut character appearances, syndicate promotional materials, posters, merchandise, personal drawings and memorabilia from the family archives, as well as biographical sketches and anecdotes. Dubbed 'The Dean of American Cartooning,' Walker was one of the most prolific cartoonists in the comics business, with the creation of nine different syndicated strips during his lifetime, including Beetle Bailey, one of the most widely syndicated strips in the world. Beetle Bailey remains a popular feature in newspapers today and is currently produced by his sons Greg, Brian and Neal.

Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. ToI founding editor David Horovitz joins host Jessica Steinberg for today's episode. With the body of hostage Tal Haimi returned to Israel, Horovitz discusses the resilience of and emotional toll on the remaining 15 hostages' families awaiting their loved ones, and whether Hamas is playing games in the slowed process of returning the bodies. As US Vice President JD Vance arrives in Israel, Horovitz talks about his presence in Israel alongside US special envoy Steve Witkoff and White House advisor Jared Kushner, all part of the overt American role in seeing the ceasefire carried out to its conclusion. The Knesset's raucous opening session on Monday reveals deep divisions, says Horovitz, as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's speech aimed to frame the conflict as a victory for Israel, alongside the continued battle over the legitimacy of the Supreme Court. You ever have one of those days where you're smiling for everyone else, but deep down you're just… tired? In this clip, Zaya gets real about that exact feeling — the side of happiness no one likes to talk about. He dives into what it's like to wear a smile that doesn't quite fit, to perform joy for the world while silently dealing with your own mess behind the curtain. It's honest, it's raw, and it's the kind of moment that makes you stop and think about how often we hide behind “I'm fine.” Zaya reflects on the pressure to appear happy — especially when the world expects you to be the strong one, the positive one, the one who has it all together. But what happens when that version of happiness starts to feel more like a mask than a mindset? If you've ever struggled to balance how you feel with how you want to be seen, this clip will hit home.
A sleeker Prius that's actually fun, EV incentives vanishing, and a sports car that resets your grin—this one brings the big swings and the small joys. We kick off by tearing down the old hybrid myth and putting the latest Toyota Prius through a real-world lens: punchy off-the-line torque, thoughtful ergonomics, and the kind of efficiency that makes weekly gas stops feel optional. From there, we head straight into the question everyone's asking: with federal EV tax credits gone, does the market hold or fold? Jack Nerad joins us to unpack what a true sink-or-swim moment looks like, why some automakers are delaying EVs and battery plants, and how supplier instability can ripple from factory floors to your local service bay.We don't forget the fun. Jack shares seat time in the Toyota GR86—a small, balanced coupe that channels RX-7 and Miata vibes, reminding us why analog feedback still matters. That joy ride fuels a candid talk on size creep: when a Highlander ends up near full-size and “improvement” means more mass, more screens, and a higher price, do we lose the simple cars many drivers actually want? We compare focus group theories with street-level needs, and we get blunt about the UX headache everyone feels: lane-keeping that fights the driver and hides the off switch. The fix isn't magic; it's human-centered design and clearer choices. We round out with a nostalgic detour through S&H Green Stamps—the original loyalty hustle—and a creative pivot: Jack's new crime novel and the debate over AI narration versus human performance. The throughline across it all is choice and clarity. Hybrids that feel alive. EVs that fit real lives. Driver aids that obey intent. And stories—on the road and on the page—that keep us leaning in.If you enjoy smart car talk with real-world takeaways, tap follow, share this episode with a friend who still thinks hybrids are dull, and drop a review with your take: are incentives a crutch or a bridge? In a special episode, Greg and Ed interview Kevin Maes in Kevin's own podcast studio on Rama IV. Kevin is a long-time expat in Thailand hailing from Belgium who became entangled in a very unfortunate crime drama and subsequently wrote a book about it called ‘Kingdom of Trials,' which is now available on Amazon. Kevin begins with his Thai ‘origin story,' how he ended up in the Land of Smiles, and more importantly, how and why he fell in love with it. Unfortunately, he eventually was sucked into a drama involving his ex-wife's boyfriend that shockingly ended in the boyfriend's death. Kevin and another friend were charged with murder, and a years-long ordeal would ensue involving the ins and outs of the Thai justice system. Kevin recounts his fears step-by-step, including his shocking (but somewhat heartening) decision to return to Thailand to face the Thai justice process even though he had an opportunity to remain in Belgium safely for the rest of his life. Suffice it to say, both the interview and the book are worth the interest of any expat or serious Thai-phile. Greg and Ed discuss the recent BBC ‘documentary' called ‘The Dark Side of Paradise' and what it says about media representation of Thailand. Ed explains that the recently aired 3-episode series has been getting a LOT of blowback on expat social media. The series depicts Zara, a young British woman, on her first trip to Thailand, ostensibly to report on the popularity of the Land of Smiles with British influencers. However, the show quickly devolves into an exploration of all the negative stereotypes about Bangkok, from partying to drugs and prostitution. Greg admits to finding the first episode so grossly underwhelming and riddled with cliches that he couldn't even make it to the end. Ed notes that he got through the first episode, but was shocked by the number of basic factual errors in the show. For example, Zara stated that Khao San Road is open 24/7, and everyone knows that hasn't been true for 25 years. Other very blatant errors, such as the claim that all go-go bars have covers when none in fact do, really calls into question whether the filmmakers did any actual investigating at all. Ed also mentions that a YouTuber who was interviewed in the documentary has claimed that the BBC lied to him about the nature of their interview. Greg expands the discussion to include how Thailand is typically portrayed in the media. Unfortunately, negative stereotypes always come first, even though there is already a veritable boatload of ‘content' out there on these issues. One would think the BBC would have the budget and the experienced writers to do more than scratch the surface with every well-worn cliche about Thailand, but apparently not. Watch at your own risk! Our G10 FX Market Strategist Andrew Watrous challenges the prevailing market view on the U.S. dollar, reaffirming the relevance of Morgan Stanley's "dollar smile" framework. Read more insights from Morgan Stanley.----- Transcript -----Welcome to Thoughts on the Market. I'm Andrew Watrous, G10 FX Strategist at Morgan Stanley. Today – a look at how the US dollar behaves under different global growth circumstances. And why – contrary to the views of some observers – we think the dollar still smiles. It's Friday, September 5, at 10 AM in New York. We've been talking a good amount on this show about the US dollar – not just as a currency, but as the cornerstone of the global financial system. As the world's reserve currency, its movements ripple across markets everywhere. The trajectory of the dollar affects everything from your portfolio's performance to the cost of your next international vacation.Let's start with the “dollar smile,” which is a framework Morgan Stanley FX strategists developed back in 2001, to explain how the dollar behaves under different global growth scenarios.Picture a smile-shaped curve: On the lefthand side, the dollar rises, goes up, when global growth is concerningly weak as nervous investors flock to US assets as a safe haven. On the right side of the smile, when US growth outperforms growth in the rest of the world, capital flows into the US, boosting the dollar. In the middle of the curve – which is the bottom of the smile – the dollar weakens, goes down, when growth is robust around the world and synchronized globally. In that environment - middle of the smile - investors seek riskier assets which weighs on the dollar - in part because they could borrow in dollars and invest outside the US.It's kind of a simple framework, right? But here's the twist: some investors argue that the left side of the smile might be broken. In other words, they say that the dollar no longer rises if people are really worried about global growth. They say that if the US itself is the source of the growth shock -- whether it's political uncertainty or trade wars -- the dollar shouldn't benefit. Or that the rise in US interest rates, which makes it more expensive to borrow in the US and invest abroad, or changes in the structure of global asset holdings, might mean that growth scares won't lead to an inflow to the US and a dollar bid.We disagree with those challenges to the dollar smile framework. To quantify the dollar smile, in order to test whether it still works, we started by using Economic Surprise Indices. These indices measure how actual economic data compares to forecasts. We found that when growth in the US and outside the US are both surprisingly weak - in other words they're much weaker than forecasted - the dollar rises on average about 0.8% per month over the past 20 years. Then on the right side of the dollar smile, when US growth really outperforms expectations, but growth outside the US underperforms expectations, the dollar goes up even more—about 1.1% on average per month. And in the middle of the dollar smile, during synchronized global growth, the dollar tends to decline on average a little bit, about 0.1% on average per month. The question is, does that framework, does that pattern still hold up today? We think it does for a few different reasons. In 2018 and 2019, despite trade tensions and US policy uncertainty playing a big role in driving global growth concerns, the dollar strengthened during periods of poor global growth. In other words, the lefthand side of the dollar smile worked back then, even though the concerns were driven by US factors. And in June 2025, when geopolitical tensions spiked between Israel and Iran, and growth concerns became elevated - the dollar surged. Investors fled to safety, and the dollar delivered. It's true that in April 2025, the dollar dipped initially after the first tariff announcements. But then it fell even more after those tariff hikes were paused, despite a rebound in stocks. Growth concerns were mitigated and the dollar went down. So this episode I think wasn't really a breakdown of the smile. What weighed on the dollar this spring was policy unpredictability in the US, which led investors to reduce their exposure to US assets, rather than concerns about global growth. So these episodes, I think, show that the dollar can still act as a safe haven, despite changing patterns of global asset ownership, the rise in US interest rates, and even when the US itself is the source of global concerns. Now, setting aside the framework, it's important to note that the US dollar dropped about 11% against other currencies in the first half of this year. This was the biggest decline in more than 50 years and it ended a 15-year bull cycle for the US dollar. Moreover, we think that the dollar will continue to weaken through 2026 as the Fed cuts interest rates and policy uncertainty remains elevated.Still, even with all that, we think our framework holds. When markets wobble, remember this: the dollar will probably greet volatility with a smile. Thanks for listening. Dr. Frounfelter shares her journey from a high-volume "bread and butter" dental practice to a more balanced and fulfilling one, emphasizing the importance of slowing down to speed up. The episode details the step-by-step process of creating and using a 3D-printed resin shell, or Trial Smile, to help patients visualize their potential new smile. Dr. Frounfelter also highlights the importance of incorporating the entire dental team in the process and discusses how this patient-centered approach, along with the right technology and systems, has transformed her practice. Key Takeaways Invest in Digital Technology: Dr. Frounfelter and her husband significantly transformed their practice by investing in digital tools, including a CBCT, intraoral scanner, and 3D printer. They initially sought a CBCT but came back from a conference with a full suite of digital tools. The Trial Smile Process: A Trial Smile is a thin, 3D-printed resin shell that fits over a patient's natural teeth, allowing them to try on a new smile. This is a crucial step in cosmetic dentistry consultations as it offers a tangible "try before you buy" experience. Difference from Traditional Wax-ups: Unlike a traditional bis-acryl wax-up, a Trial Smile is easily placed and removed, making it repeatable and mess-free. This allows patients to get a clear and instant before-and-after comparison. Team Involvement is Crucial: Allie stresses the importance of training and involving the entire team in the new workflow. Her clinical director, Brandon, handles the initial patient conversation, photos, and records, while a dental assistant, Emma, designs the smiles using specialized software like Exocad. Slowing Down to Speed Up: By implementing new systems and focusing on comprehensive cases, Allie and Adam were able to move away from a high-volume model that led to burnout. They now see fewer patients but generate more revenue from cosmetic and full-mouth cases. Outsourcing Options: If a practice lacks the necessary design software or a 3D printer, they can partner with a dental lab like Roe Dental Lab, which offers a cosmetic design service to create and even print the Trial Smile for them.
