Former Lakers head coach Phil Jackson has, reportedly, noted support for point guard Russell Westbrook, who (as was noted on Wednesday's show) has a pretty decent chance of being in a Lakers uniform next season. Or at the least, being eligible to wear one, assuming the Lakers don't buy him out or pay him to sit on the sidelines. Jackson reportedly believes Westbrook wasn't utilized properly this season and is a fan of his talent. All of that could mean a lot of things, and all of it kinda makes fans a little nervous. Particularly those who don't think Jackson should have a significant voice in choosing the next head coach. So is the concern warranted? As always, God is in the details. Does "support" for Westbrook mean advocating for the Lakers to keep him? For trying to make the best of it if they can't find a good deal? Big difference between just those. From there, it's a Westbrook Thought Experiment. And it's a bold one! HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Phil Jackson reportedly is a Westbrook fan. What does that mean, exactly? Walden Pod
Friendly Debate w/ Ben Burgis - Do ethical thought experiments have any value in philosophy?

Walden Pod

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 20, 2022 75:27

Ben Burgis recently invited me on his Callin show to speak about the value of “science fiction” thought experiments in applied ethics.  I argue that in the realm of applied ethics, thought experiments often confuse more than they clarify. They don't map on to the real world cases they're intended to help with (for various reasons), and we shouldn't be informing action with scenarios that differ in ethically relevant respects. Applied ethics is about what we should do – it's a uniquely practical subfield of philosophy. Ethical thought experiments commonly provide us with both too much and too little information: they exclude morally relevant detail that we would possess in the real world, and they include morally relevant detail that we would not possess in the real world. So even though we may come to the same conclusion regarding an action or principle in a thought experiment doesn't mean we'd agree in the real world case, since these two cases differ in morally relevant respects. Consequently, I think it's often a mistake to inform action in the real world with conclusions drawn from a thought experiment. INBW32: The Ultimate Impact of Telehealth: A Thought Experiment

Relentless Health Value

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 30, 2021 18:47

This episode is a little bit of a thought experiment, so hang with me as I bumble my way through it and then hit me up with your comments. The plan is to do another episode in the future where some of you with thoughts share your version of your own thought experiment. Here's the topic: The ultimate impact of telehealth—in 20 minutes or less. In my version of this thought experiment, I want to do something a little bit different (maybe) than everybody who seems to be putting up a poll on Twitter right now. I want to look at telehealth as a leading indicator, not as a trend. The goal here is not to inform you of things that you don't already know because I am entirely confident that much of what I'm gonna say right now the majority of you are already eminently familiar with—probably more familiar with than I am, frankly. So, the goal here is to put this information into a context that maybe is new—at least I hope it's new. The goal of that is to hopefully inspire some of you to take action, right now, with all haste. This whole telehealth thing started in the middle of one of the many conversations I've had lately about what will be the future of telehealth. You have probably had similar chats about the future of telehealth and know what I am going to say. They all seem to devolve into someone ticking off all of the states who have extended temporary telehealth measures and the 1000 telehealth bills pending in state legislatures that might mandate public and private payers cover it. Anyway, in the middle of one of these “let's all study this updated spreadsheet” exercises, I started to wonder if we were missing the bigger takeaway. So, let me tick through a few background points which are all pillars in my “what's the ultimate impact of telehealth” contemplation and the realization that telehealth in and of itself has no impact. What has impact is who is using it and whether their goals are reactionarily (if that's a word) short term and/or shortsighted, or if there's anything that approximates a strategic long game in that mix. On episode 113, we welcome philosopher Constantine Sandis to discuss the new book ‘Philosophy Illustrated', Ludwig Wittgenstein's beetle in the box thought experiment, whether we can experience another's pain specifically and understand their experiences broadly, why Wittgenstein was skeptical of the skeptic argument that we can't, Wittgenstein's belief that philosophical problems were essentially problems in the clarity of language as opposed to objective issues, the neuroscientific research on pain, Wittgenstein's obsession with self-improvement and how he utilized confession to foster his own growth, and the pessimism he felt about his relationships. Constantine Sandis is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Hertfordshire, founding director of Lex Academic, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, UK. His work centers around philosophical questions relating to moral psychology, action, explanation, and interpersonal understanding. Constantine Sandis is the co-editor, along with Gary Browning, of the book, “Dylan at 80: It used to go like that, and now it goes like this” and is one of contributing authors prominently featured in Helen De Cruz's new book, “Philosophy Illustrated: Forty-two Thought Experiments To Broaden Your Mind.” | Constantine Sandis | ► Website | https://www.constantinesandis.com ► Twitter | https://twitter.com/csandis ► Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/csandis ► Philosophy Illustrated Book | https://www.amazon.com/Philosophy-Illustrated-Helen-Cruz/dp/0190080531 Where you can find us: | Seize The Moment Podcast | ► Facebook | https://www.facebook.com/SeizeTheMoment ► Twitter | https://twitter.com/seize_podcast  ► Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/seizethemoment ► TikTok | https://www.tiktok.com/@seizethemomentpodcast #ConstantineSandis #PhilosophyIllustrated #Wittgenstein #Philosophy #ThoughtExperiment #ThoughtExperiments #SeizeTheMoment #SeizeTheMomentPodcast #STMPodcast

We are back, with Series 2, Episode 1...! This is meant to be a highly thought provoking Thought Experiment, it will trigger many people, but hopefully most people realise what it's getting at. The inspiration for the episode were people on twitter who think Bitcoin will be 'THE' thing for literally forever - i.e. infinite time. We dive into Relativity, Proof of Work (PoW), a crazy but scientifically sound way to break mining (which is likely impossible for probably 1,000s of years to come...), how we can control time, how this means we neatly circumvent some Energy requirements, and all with Physics that is generally considered to be correct, and proven beyond doubt (but note, Relativity is likely not the deepest theory, but it has been proven 1,000 different ways). If you are offended by it then I would suggest you reassess the point of the podcast, it's absolutely not having a go at Bitcoin, it should be a light hearted take on an interesting Thought Experiment. On episode 111, we welcome back philosopher Helen De Cruz to discuss the significance of illustrating thought experiments, using them to illicit and explore our intuitive beliefs, the extended mind hypothesis and whether our cell phones are part of us, the nature of dreams, if created identical, lookalikes would be us, whether humans only behave ethically for selfish reasons, The Matrix and why some people prefer living in simulations, Paris Hilton's virtual reality club and her preference for it over performing in real venues, what Plato's Cave teaches us about true happiness, and what people would gain from more engagement with thought experiments. Helen De Cruz is a professor of philosophy and Danforth Chair of Philosophy at Saint Louis University who specializes in philosophy of religion, experimental philosophy, and philosophy of cognitive science. Her latest book, which she edited and illustrated, is called Philosophy Illustrated: 42 Thought Experiments to Broaden Your Mind. Thought experiments are tools philosophers and scientists use to investigate how things are, without actually having to go out and experiment in the real world. This book presents forty-two philosophical thought experiments. Each thought experiment is illustrated by De Cruz (who is an illustrator as well as a philosopher), and is summarized in one or two paragraphs, which is followed by a brief exploration of its significance. Each thought experiment also includes a longer (approximately 2-page) reflection, written by a philosopher who is a specialist in the field. De Cruz's unique illustrations serve as visual and accessible starting points for classroom discussions in Intro to Philosophy courses. | Helen De Cruz | ► Website | http://helendecruz.net ► Twitter | https://twitter.com/Helenreflects ► Philosophy Illustrated Book | https://www.amazon.com/Philosophy-Illustrated-Helen-Cruz/dp/0190080531 Where you can find us: | Seize The Moment Podcast | ► Facebook | https://www.facebook.com/SeizeTheMoment ► Twitter | https://twitter.com/seize_podcast  ► Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/seizethemoment ► TikTok | https://www.tiktok.com/@seizethemomentpodcast
