28 Days Together in the Word As we kick off 2023, I have been sensing in my spirit that Holy Spirit wants to do something very new among us. That's going to require us doing something new to receive it. The Bible tells us in the book of Acts that on the day of Pentecost the believers were altogether in one accord. Then a sound came like a mighty rushing wind. It was the Holy Spirit who had come to […] The post Together in the Word (Pregame) appeared first on Revival Life Church Boca Raton, FL.

I cannot believe Christmas is around the corner and as I have been discussing with many of my client's lately, with the holidays comes both excitement for rest but also some unpleasant realities of our family relationships. I often ask this question when meeting new clients: “describe your family in three words.” This quick exercise gives me a broad view of the family dynamics impacting my client's perspective. In this episode, I want to explore our family origins and how those dynamics may be impacting us, especially during the holidays. I hope this will provide some encouragement for you to take into this Christmas season. Questions We Talk through In This Episode:1. What are the “messages” you grew up hearing?Messages are simply information via words or behaviors that convey values, expectations, and rules within an interaction. For example: a family message growing could be something like: “success is found in a good career” or ``emotions are a sign of weakness” or “don't trust people,” etc. The messages we receive from our father and mother in many ways are the foundation for our core beliefs of self.2. What messages have negatively impacted you? What do you believe about yourself based on those messages you grew up hearing?Oftentimes we need to go back to go forward in our family relationships. Reflecting on the unhealed wounds and acknowledging the beliefs they have created in our hearts. But we cannot stop there...If we did, we would most likely become bitter towards those who have carelessly hurt us and lose hope in the possibility of having a sense of belonging that family gives us. Next Steps to Take toward Healing:1. Turn to God's Word: As you reflect on the messages of your family of origin and the experiences that have shaped your perspective throughout life - how do they contrast with God's fatherly language throughout scripture? 2. Remember You Belong to God's Family: Whether you have close family or if you have lost loved ones, been hurt or abused by those who were supposed to be protective and trustworthy, I want you to know, despite it all, you are deeply loved and invited into a new kind of belonging within the family of God.3. Who Has God Entrusted to You? What does it look like to love those around us and invite them into the family of God so that they too can experience the hope, peace, joy, and love that we are celebrating this Christmas?I want to close with a letter I wrote some time ago as a reminder of God's fatherly affection and I pray it will be a reminder for you as well this Christmas! My child, You are so precious to me (Isaiah 43) don't ever doubt how much I love you. Beloved, your life is valuable (Luke 12:15) and I never want you to forget that I have great plans for your life (Psalm 138, Philippians 1:6). Remember, I am with you always so stay strong and claim courage (Joshua 1:9). My sweet girl, I am so proud to be your Father, and I delight in your heart (Psalm 149:4, Zephaniah 3:17). Despite how this world may treat you, remember that nothing can separate you from my love (Romans 8:38-39). I cannot wait to have you home with me one day, but until then, hold tightly to my hand and walk with me daily (john 15:4). I am with you always, Your Heavenly FatherVerses for Study:Matthew 12:46-50; John 1:12-13; Romans 8:15; Galatians 3:26-29; Revelation 7:9; John 13:34-35Resources Mentioned:Emotionally Healthy Spirituality: https://amzn.to/3GOlxVoFollow Carley:Website: https://www.carleymarcouillier.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/carleymarcouillier/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/carleyMwrites/To access more content and join my monthly email list for the latest episodes and info, visit my website at https://www.carleymarcouillier.com/Episode Image Credit: Getty/Rudzhan_Nagiev

Hearing and Doing the Word As we continue to look at the letter James wrote to the Early Church, let me remind you of the contextual setting as is recorded in the Book of Acts. Following the birth of the church there was a period of explosive growth with thousands coming to faith. The followers of Christ were still living and worshipping in Jerusalem. James, the author of this letter was the leader of the Jerusalem church. Following the stoning of Stephen, one of the first deacons of the church, and the first martyr, there arose persecution of the church resulting in many believers fleeing Jerusalem to the surrounding regions and nations. As the pastor of the Jerusalem church, James had a burden for those who fled the persecution and wrote this letter of encouragement. With that background, let's now consider the encouragement and instruction given to these early members of the church. As we do so, let's glean truths which are applicable for the believers today. I hope these devotional studies have been helpful to the listener as we have opened up this epistle. As I stated in the introductory podcast, the Epistle of James is called the Proverbs of the New Testament, as James communicated the practical application of faith to the early church. I especially like the instruction contained in the passage at which we are looking today. James 1:19-27 (NASB)19 This you know, my beloved brethren. But everyone must be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger; 20 for the anger of man does not achieve the righteousness of God. 21 Therefore, putting aside all filthiness and all that remains of wickedness, in humility receive the word implanted, which is able to save your souls. 22 But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves. 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror;24 for once he has looked at himself and gone away, he has immediately forgotten what kind of person he was. 25 But one who looks intently at the perfect law, the law of liberty, and abides by it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an effectual doer, this man will be blessed in what he does.26 If anyone thinks himself to be religious, and yet does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this man's religion is worthless. 27 Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world. This passage is not a new truth James was teaching; rather it is a reminder of a known truth. A truth we also know, but is often difficult to apply to our lives. Good communication is essential to good relationships. This is true of relationships in the church, as well as in the community and in our families. One of the biggest hindrances to good communication is the neglect of the first principle James states in verse 19...everyone must be quick to hear. Just think about how many times in your life the failure to hear what was being said led to conflict. Early in my ministry I had a gentleman in the congregation who took it upon himself to be my antagonist. It didn't matter what I did or said, it seemed he took the opposing position to my leadership, only to come back later to agree with me. (One day I asked him why he did this and he said; "I want you to work for everything you want as pastor." ) During one of these episodes of opposition, we attended a Valentines Banquet, and happened to meet at the dessert table following the main course. I asked him how he was doing and was shocked by what I heard as his response which was, "I would feel a lot better if I could belt ya." As I returned to my table I could barely contain my anger. Frankly I was totally fed up with him and his behavior and decided as soon as the banquet was over I was going to invite him to take his best shot at belting me. As my anger continued to rise I began to fantasize how good it was going to be to give this man the beat down of his life, and by the time the banquet was over I was primed and ready to go. Following the banquet, I pushed through the crowd to this man, and said to him; "What exactly do you mean, you would feel a lot better if you could belt me?" He looked at me with bewilderment on his face and said, "I didn't say I would feel better if I could belt ya, I said I would feel better if I could belch." Needless to say, I was embarrassed beyond words at my misunderstanding of what was said, as well as my angry response. Be quick to hear...listen with the ears, the heart, and the spirit.Be slow to speak...focus on what is being said, rather than on what you are going to say. Once you begin to formulate your response you stop listening.Be slow to anger... too often the angry reply is a reaction instead of a response. In verse 20 James declares the anger of man does not achieve the righteousness of God. James calls the believers to put off filthiness and wickedness and in humility receive the implanted word which is able to save your souls. However, he admonishes the early believers, not just to hear the word, but to do the word as well. It is the demonstration of the authenticity of the faith which is professed. And it is a call to establish the word in your heart and life. Studies have been done regarding teaching and retention rates and the Learning Pyramid was created by the National Training Laboratories. It examined the 7 common methods of teaching and found the follow:5% - Lecture10% - Reading20% - Audio-Visual30% - Demonstration50% - Discussion75% - Practice Doing90% - Teaching others.Apply this to what James says to the early church. It is a powerful truth. We must guard against being a "spectator" church; rather we must be doers and teachers of the Word of God. James closes out chapter one with instruction for practical application. Watch what you say, you can't talk your way into the kingdom of God. Rather, walk your talk.

When it comes to the Christian life, nothing is more important or decisive than how you engage with and respond to the Word of God. Absolutely everything in your life is effected by your read on the story of God found in Scripture. You could go as far as to say that your Christian life is a by-product of how you read and respond to the Word of God. But many of us find the Bible difficult to understand. We drop into its pages and often feel lost and disoriented. Could it be possible that there is a different way of reading the Bible? Could it be possible that there is some insight, some lens that could open up a new kind of encounter with God’s Word? As we expore the Apostle Peter's first sermon, we see that there is indeed a different way of reading Scripture that changes everything. Listen in as we consider this new outlook and its transforming effects on our spirituality.

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1).   Believe it or not, those 17 simple words comprise one of the landmark, foundational verses upon which our faith, and therefore our lives, rests. Yet, when I read them aloud, there are no bugles blaring, no angelic choirs singing, no lightning flashing, nor thunder pealing. My reading of these words never elicits from anyone any audible ooohs or aaahs.    Maybe, just maybe that’s because on the surface at least, these 17 words sound for foreign, so unlike the way we talk, so hard to relate to. "In the beginning was the Word"? As someone said to me just recently, "My mind has always just sort of glazed over that verse." I can see why.   That being said, it would be impossible for me -- impossible for me -- to overstate the importance of this opening verse that introduces to us the Gospel According to John.   Listen to this podcast, and you will quickly understand why.   PLEASE NOTE: With some browsers, it may take up to 60 seconds before the podcast will begin to play.
