It really did look like the end.Mark 5 is about the moment right after someone gets that exact news.A desperate parent had come looking for help for a child who was slipping fast. And while they were still on the way — before help could arrive — the message came that every parent dreads. It's too late. She's gone. Don't bother the Teacher anymore. The one thing they were racing against had already won. The story, as far as everyone was concerned, was over.And then came a sentence that made no sense given the news.Here is what most people miss. Instead of offering comfort, instead of acknowledging the ending everyone had already accepted, the response was a quiet instruction that flew in the face of the facts: don't be afraid — just keep believing. And in the middle of the greatest loss recorded in the entire Bible, a declaration was made about the end that contradicted absolutely everything the circumstances were saying.The circumstances said it was over.The declaration said it had barely started.There is a specific contrast built into this one verse — between what things looked like at the beginning and what they were guaranteed to become at the end — that changes the way YOU measure the season YOU are standing in right now. Because if this is true, then the size of YOUR current beginning is not evidence of the size of YOUR ending.
