Season 2, Episode 1 Do you find yourself at the end of the day evaluating your success for that day based on the number of things you accomplished? What if you accomplished many things but did not accomplish that one thing you really needed to get done? Would you still consider your day a success? What keeps you from that One Thing that you really desire to do or accomplish? For many of us, it is the tyranny of the urgent that always seems to be pressing in on us. The truth is that there is always something urgent or important that needs to be dealt with. Which one gets our attention... it is the one that is the loudest or most immediate. When we don't establish the most important thing, someone else will. Here is the most important question you can ask yourself when setting your priorities for the day or week or month... Looking at all you have to do, all that is on your list, ask yourself this one question. If I was only able to get one thing done today, what would that one thing be? That one thing that if I accomplished it I would be able to say I was successful today! Once you have established that one thing, ask yourself the same question 2 more times. You know have your top three priorities for your day. Once you set your priorities you need to set the strategy to get them done. Season 1, Episode 35 The greatest need we have when communicating is to be heard and understood! To understand what someone is saying requires our listening. Hearing and listening are not the same! Just because we hear someone talking, doesn't mean we are actually listening. Have you ever had someone say to you (maybe a child?)... "You are not listening!" Unfortunately, I have heard this all too often from my children and on occasion from my wife. Hearing is about volume and projection, listening is about understanding. Listening is not about having an answer or solving a problem. Listening involves feeling, emotion, and connection. Principles are always true but how they are lived out in our lives is unique. Episode 32 The Holiday Season can be some of the most joyous times and the most challenging times of the year. The holidays have a way of magnifying everything. Not only the good things but also those painful places that we have buried deep hoping they have gone away. Do you ever look at the holiday season with the mindset that says, if I just hold on to the new year it will all be better. Have you ever thought that? If you have you know that it is a lie because 12 months later you are saying the same thing, year after year. It doesn't get better over the years, it only gets worse as we get older. We become hard-hearted, cynical and often isolated. BUT THERE IS HOPE AND FREEDOM from becoming Scrooge with a Bah Humbug view of life and the holidays. It is time to move from our past pains and into our future potential and possibilities. You are so much stronger than you think you are! The truth is that we can not go around, over or under the obstacles that are in front of us or the pain that is buried deep within us. The only way to go up is to go through... That may seem hard and scary, but you already know the truth. Just because we ignore something, pretend it does not exist or bury it deep down inside of us does not mean that it is gone! Getting by is no way to live our lives. You were created for MORE! You are stronger then you think you are. You are NOT perfect and you won't be. If you wait until you are perfect or have it figured out you will never move forward and go through. Here are a few thoughts on how to start walking (I am not saying they are easy steps, but when engaged they will lead to a better outcome) Start with taking some deep breaths, as many as you need to slow everything down for a minute and allow you to refocus Speak life over yourself - Even if you don't believe it at the moment still speak it out loud. Complete this statement I AM... (one positive word) and do this several times. Remember that the only thing you control is yourself. Your freedom will not come from other people's actions. If you are waiting for someone else to do the right thing or say the right thing you will remain stuck and bound. Examine what you control and make a conscious choice to do, think and speak the right thing. Forgive much. Forgiveness is not for the other person, it is for you! When you forgive someone even when they don't ask for it or deserve it, you are setting yourself free. When you refuse to forgive you are choosing to remain bound. Not easy but worth it! Find time to laugh, especially at yourself! Laughter is good for the soul! Focus on the good! living from gratitude, particularly when the airwaves bombard us with all the "not-so-good," is easier said than done. Fires. Tragic shootings. Anti-semitism. Terror attacks. Hurricanes. More violence against innocence. What about the pressure and problems, trials and the unexpected. The job stress, financial stress, marital and kid stress... there will always be something that isn’t as we’d like it to be. Things that can cause anxiety, sadness, self-pity, despair, frustration or resentment. There is an answer to ALL of it! In today's episode, we look at the power of giving thanks and the shift that happens in us when we focus on gratitude and thanksgiving rather than the storms around us. When we focus on what’s missing or outside of our control – we end up in self-pity focus on the problems – we end up in worry and fear focus on what’s unfair – we end up in resentment BUT When we focus on what we have – we end up in thanksgiving focus on the solutions – we end up walking in peace focus on what is good and right – we end up in blessing Epictetus once said that a wise man “does not grieve for the things which he has not but rejoices for those which he has.” Emotions are contagious! What emotions are you carrying? What are you infecting those around you with? Imagine the difference it would make if each of us, individually and collectively, decided to trade our complaining for thanksgiving When we give thanks, we magnify our blessing and expand our ability to be a blessing. Episode 30 Life is about relationships. Unless you are a hermit on an island, everyone has to deal with other people. We were all created for relationship! Our experience in and with relationships in our past has a way of influencing and shaping our relationships today. Relationships can be lifegiving, filled with excitement, powerful and intimate. Relationships can also be painful, life-taking, places of challenge and anxiety. In this episode, I share some of my journey with relationships. Growing up through my formative years with a single mom and a grandmother shaped how I viewed and interacted with the different relationships in my life. When I met my wife and chased her to Texas (story in the debut episode) I had to confront my idea of relationships. I realized that when you choose to engage in real relationships you will see the good, the bad and the ugly in that relationship. We are OK with the good and bad, but when we get to "ugly" we have to make a decision, are we going to love through our leave! I was great at leaving until I met my wife... Episode 27 We were there! Nats Win! Nats Win! Nats Win! Those are hard words for an Astros fan (which I am). But what made it easier was getting to know some of the families of the players and their amazing stories of perseverance and grit! We may not have choices about the things that happen around us or to us, but we all have choices about how we handle the challenges and obstacles that come our way. We are blessed to have had season tickets to the Houston Astro's this year which allowed us to be at the home games of the World Series. Our seats are actually right in front of the visiting family's seats. We usually sit in front of the visiting pitchers' family. Some teams have great fans and families and others... not so much! The Washington Nationals have great fans and families. We got to hear some great storylines of some of the star players on the nationals. While they were our enemy on the baseball field, I became a fan of their resilience and perseverance off the field. (As you listen today you can tell I was suffering from a World series Loss hangover. That is why we say this podcast is about real life, uncut and unedited. Correction in the podcast; Sherzer was injured and had to sit out game 5, Stausberg was voted MVP of the series) Life Happens! You hear me say this often. It is the unexpected moments that come our way and how we handle them that defines and speaks into our character. Maj. General Bob Dees has written several books on Resilient Leadership. He talks about the warrior. He shared that warriors prepare for battle and understand that when in the battle they WILL be hit, knocked down, face defeat. No one steps into a boxing ring thinking they will never get punched! The issues is not getting hit, knocked down or punched, the issue is are you going to get back up? Often easy to say but not as easy to do... I understand from my own experiences. In today's episode, we talk about this and those things that help us to get back up. Episode 26 When I was a kid, we lived in a neighborhood where there were no fences between the houses. Every Saturday my friends and I would head out to play and we wouldn't come home until the sun went down. The only break we would take is to get a drink from the water hose on the side of the nearest house. The key to drinking from a fire hose was being the one to control the flow of the water. If you didn't control the flow, you knew that getting a drink was going to be an adventure... you would wait until they put their lips to the water and started drinking and then turn the nozzle up full blast, blowing your friends cheeks wide and causing them to choke... We would turn the hose on each other and take off running through the neighborhood again. Does life ever feel like you are drinking from a fire hose? Episode 25 - All I need is me! This is where I lived for much of my life and no matter how hard I tried to break through there always seemed to be a lid on my growth and future. It wasn't until I realized that I was the one limiting my future and potential that I was able to take the lid off and truly begin to grow. In order to grow, I knew I was going to need to surround myself with people smarter and further ahead of where I was. While everyone else is moving out of the city, we decided to move into the city! We are in a high rise in the med center right across from the zoo, and we love it! Every Saturday my wife and I ride bikes through the city, stop at a new breakfast spot and enjoy the miles of trails through the city. This morning on our ride we passed a mom out on the trails early in the morning. She was working out doing lunges with her baby in her arms. Way to go, mom! You know that had to be hard, she could have easily stayed at home and given up on her workout and no one would have cared. But there she was in full workout mode, strengthening herself and making herself better and stronger. Another mile down the road and we rode through the TSU campus and I thought about all the students that go to school, probably taking on debt to do so. Those students have chosen to make their lives better and to give themselves the best chance for a future and a hope. What's the point? The mom and the students made an intentional choice to improve their lives and to make themselves better. Being intentional is the key to growth! If you want to lead others, reach your potential, leave a legacy then you must be intentional to invest in yourself first. What area do you need to move from someday thinking to NOW actions? When I was a kid in school we would play a game called Red Rover. Our teacher would divide us into two groups and line us up across from each other. We would be instructed to hold hands and then yell to the other team... Red Rover Red Rover, let (insert the name of the smallest and weakest person from the other team) come over! The object was for that person to pick the weakest point and run as fast and hard as they could through our line trying to break the connection. If they broke our handhold they would pick someone from our team to become part of their team. If they failed to break our line they became part of our team. In today's podcast, we talk about relationships and connection. The more time we spend in a real relationship the more we begin to see the good, the bad and the ugly of the other person. I loved walking the beach where the waves and the shore meet in Sanibel Island Florida. At one time, not sure if it still is, Sanibel beaches were in the top 5 in the world for shells! We have bags of amazing shells of all kinds, shapes, and sizes. Looking for the perfect shell was therapy for me. I know I must be a pretty boring person if I find great enjoyment in digging in the sand for shells. But, there is nothing better than pulling up a hand full of sand and shells and discovering something you had never seen before. So what is the perfect shell? I don't know, but I can tell you when I see it. In today's episode, I talk about my hunt for the perfect shell and relate it to leadership and life. I coached High School basketball in Texas! People ask if we were any good... lets just say we were competitive! One thing I new how to do was call timeouts. A timeout is used to change the momentum, regroup, put in a specific play, encourage the team and often to give everyone a chance to catch their breath. We could all use a time out in our lives. When I was a child, my mom and uncle would take me to the fair. They had this carnival game on the board walk called Whack-A-Mole. I think you can find them at Chucky Cheese as well. The object was to take the mallet and beat the mole on the head every time it popped up. The challenge was that as you popped one mole down, another would pop up. It was an endless cycle that you could never win. Sometimes life can feel a little like that Whack-A-Mole game. The challenges of life seem to come from all directions and no matter how hard we try to deal with them they just keep coming! Recalculating! My favorite word when driving through the streets of Houston! Today's episode was birthed in the middle of a traffic jam while driving home from a long day of training. I forgot to map my route home before I started driving and before I new it I was dead stopped in Houston Traffic. I quickly plugged in my destination and current location and mapped my new route... recalculating! I followed the new map, made a few course corrections and before long was back on track and in the flow! Life can be a lot like this! I think I know where I am going but because I failed to take the time to build my roadmap I often find myself stuck in the traffic of life needing to recalculate!
