Have you ever felt like life is happening to you and not for you?Today I want to introduce you to Elona, this is actually the first in person conversation I got to have with this sweet soul and I am truly grateful that life continues to bring people like this into mineElona is one that chooses to use her life, her experience, and all that has existed in her life, to hold space for others and demonstrate the value of humanityShe shares how loss at a young age, and having to face her own mortality pointed her to growing in knowing, and loving who she is inside and out. How mental peace creates clarity, how clarity allows for compassion, and how we can be afraid of something and embrace it at the same time We chat about how confidence and desperation can coexist within us, how time can heal all, but only if we do the work in that time, and how we can often allow ourselves to believe the lie that, “if we were known” we would somehow be less worthy. She shares wisdom that speaks of times in her life no one should have had to endure, of empathy and value for humanity regardless of how it differs from her own values and experiences, and the beauty that comes when we allow ourselves to exist in the silence.I've grown a fast and deep respect for the way this human chooses to show up in the world, for the way she has chosen to use her voice and her work, for how she holds space for others, and for how she holds space to be herself. I find often we forget the value in our own peace, the impact in our own understanding, and the compassion when we are loved from a place of being known; Elona is one such human that is this and more.So tune in today and meet Elona, a human that is a living example of what it is to see value, compassion, and empathy in one who does not look like us. She is someone who gently and with understanding reminds us that if we allow ourselves to see it as so, that life happens for us not to us, and how deeply that can change life itself. And to you Elona thank you, thank you for the reminder to be our own best friend, to speak to myself the way I would speak to those I love, to press into the silence of peace in meditation, and for the absolute joy of sharing time with you. Thank you for allowing me the honor of knowing more of your story and allowing others to be impacted as I have been. You are a human choosing to leave this world with an impact of love and healing, and for that you are among what makes humanity truly full of love and beauty.

From laptop-toting C-sections to spreadsheet nightmares, employee leave management has long been one of HR's most complex and frustrating challenges. Mahima Chawla, CEO and co-founder of Cocoon, is changing all that with a revolutionary approach to leave administration.Mahima shares how a chance conversation sparked her journey into the leave management space. When a colleague described bringing her laptop to her C-section to file for state benefits, Mahima was shocked by the fragmented nature of employee leave – with different time allocations, multiple payment sources, and employees left to navigate complicated paperwork during already stressful life transitions. After speaking with dozens of HR leaders who universally described leave as "an absolute nightmare," she recognized an opportunity to transform this overlooked but critical function.Cocoon tackles five major headaches for HR teams: navigating complex compliance regulations, managing multi-source payroll calculations, coordinating intricate workflows, improving employee experiences, and providing valuable benchmarking data. What makes their approach unique is their focus on automation – Mahima explains that 95% of leave management involves objective decisions perfectly suited for software handling, creating consistency while freeing HR professionals from administrative burdens.Beyond streamlining processes, Cocoon is addressing financial barriers that often prevent employees from taking needed leave. By ensuring employees understand their payment sources and helping them access entitled funds, the platform supports both employers and workers during critical life moments. Looking ahead, Mahima envisions expanding Cocoon's capabilities across more industries and geographies, while predicting that the definition of "leave" itself will continue evolving beyond traditional categories to embrace more of life's realities.Connect with Mahima on LinkedIn and follow Cocoon's page for updates on their appearances at major industry events including HR Transform and DMEC in 2025.Support the showFeature Your Brand on the HRchat PodcastThe HRchat show has had 100,000s of downloads and is frequently listed as one of the most popular global podcasts for HR pros, Talent execs and leaders. Business Continuity: Keeping Your Business Running When Life Happens

Develpreneur: Become a Better Developer and Entrepreneur

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 20, 2025 27:07

In the latest episode of the Building Better Developers podcast, hosts Rob Broadhead and Michael Meloche discuss business continuity, a concept that is often overlooked until it's too late. They explore the question: What happens when business operations are disrupted? Whether it's an illness, a vacation, unexpected growth, or even a global crisis, ensuring that a business can continue operating smoothly is essential for long-term success. What is Business Continuity? Business continuity is the ability of a company to keep running even when unexpected events disrupt normal operations. Unlike disaster recovery, which focuses on bouncing back after a catastrophe, continuity planning is about avoiding downtime in the first place. For entrepreneurs, solopreneurs, and small business owners, this means having systems, processes, and contingencies to keep things moving forward. As Rob points out, contingency planning isn't something many small businesses think about until they need it. "We don't tend to think about it until we get into it," he says, "and then by the time we're out of it, we forget about it." This lack of foresight can lead to unnecessary stress, lost revenue, and even business failure when an unexpected challenge arises. The Good and Bad of Growth and Stability Rob and Michael highlight a key challenge they've faced recently—unexpected growth affecting stability. Growth is a great problem to have, but it can catch businesses off guard. Hiring new team members, scaling processes, and adjusting to new demands require strategic planning. Rob shares that his boutique consulting firm, RB Consulting, has had to face this head-on. "We were not as prepared for the growth as we would have liked to be," he admits. The lesson? If you don't anticipate growth and put structures in place, scaling can become a bottleneck rather than an opportunity. Michael echoes this sentiment, sharing his own struggles with hiring at his company, EnvisionQA. "It's not real easy to just go out and grab someone off the Internet and say, ‘Hey, come work for me.' You have to find the right people who align with your mission and goals to ensure smooth operations." Avoiding Single Points of Failure One of the most critical aspects of operational stability is identifying and eliminating single points of failure. If one key person or system is the only thing holding a business together, that business is fragile and at risk of significant disruption. Michael brings up financial security as an example. He recently faced a fraud alert that locked him out of his business bank account. This experience made him realize he was the sole person with access to critical financial tools. "If I were to get hit by a bus, or I were to get sick or go on vacation, are the bills still going to get paid?" To mitigate risks like this and ensure stability, businesses need to: Document key processes and make sure others can step in when necessary. Use automation for routine tasks, ensuring payroll, invoices, and customer communications don't halt. Cross-train employees so that no task depends on just one person, ensuring seamless operations. Planning for Life Events Maintaining business operations isn't just about emergencies—it's also about enjoying life without worrying about work. Rob points out that if your business requires you to be there daily, you're not running a business—you have a job. "If my daughter decides she wants to have a baby, and suddenly I'm out for a week being a grandpa, how am I going to keep the business going?" Michael asks. This question applies to all entrepreneurs. Can you take time off without disrupting daily operations? If the answer is no, it's time to rethink your systems. Using Automation, Documentation, and Delegation with Business Continuity The episode circles back to a recurring theme: automation, documentation, and delegation. The hosts encourage business owners to: Automate repetitive tasks to minimize manual workload. Create clear documentation so that employees or contractors can step in when needed. Delegate responsibilities to team members instead of trying to do everything alone. A practical example they discuss is the podcast itself. Rob and Michael record episodes in advance to ensure content keeps flowing even if they can't record for a week. The same principle applies to blogs, marketing campaigns, and customer support—businesses should plan and have a buffer to maintain smooth operations. The Business Stability Challenge At the end of the episode, Rob challenges listeners to analyze their own business by asking: What would have happened last week if you weren't available? What critical tasks would have gone unfinished? Who could have stepped in, and how can you make it easier for them to do so next time? What documentation, automation, or delegation can you implement to improve overall stability? By taking proactive steps today, business owners can reduce stress, improve resilience, and create a thriving company—even when life throws curveballs. Final Thoughts on Business Continuity Operational continuity is not just about handling disasters—it's about building a strong, scalable business that can run smoothly even when you step away. Whether it's an unexpected illness, a surprise growth spurt, or a well-earned vacation, having the right processes in place ensures your business can continue operating successfully. Welcome to Episode #207 of the Life Happens, Laugh Anyway podcast. Comedian Tracy DeGraaf and her co-host and bestie, Cathrine, invite listeners into their Pod Lab where a fresh rearrangement has taken place. Tracy shares her solo efforts in creating a cozy recording space, much to Catherine's appreciation.   The conversation transitions into excitement as they discuss an unexpected email from one of their listeners, Pat, who has crossed over from being a humor consumer to a humor contributor. Pat's heartfelt message and her decision to sponsor the podcast bring joy and laughter to the hosts, who delve into how Pat discovered them and express their gratitude for her support.   Amidst talks of sleep arrangements and future video plans, they humorously reflect on real-life interruptions during their podcast recordings, bringing a genuine and relatable touch to their storytelling. As always, Tracy and Cathrine keep the laughter rolling while engaging with their audience in their unique and charming style.   In addition, the hosts covered the documentary Holy Hell, the bizarre true story of an alleged sociopathic narcissistic cult leader Jaime Gomez. He was an out-of-work actor who was once known to wear nothing but Speedos and eyeliner. You won't believe the mess he made of his followers lives and the mind control methods he used to keep people in his web for decades.   The episode closes (as always) with scripture and pointing to the one true God. ;0)   A note from your hosts...   Do you LOVE the podcast? But after this particular week, I sat down and shared some thoughts about building your business with the expectation that life is going to happen…something many business owners don't necessarily consider. One of my favorite nuggets from this message? “Act in optimism, but plan in pessimism.” AKA, act as if everything will go according to plan…but plan as if nothing will go according to plan. Life often unfolds in ways we could scarcely imagine, weaving paths that connect science and spirit, intellect and intuition. Shehnaz Soni, our guest on today's episode, exemplifies this wondrous dance. As a NASA aerospace engineer and a quantum coach, she navigates the intersection of high-tech innovation and metaphysical insight, proving that these realms are not separate but two sides of the same coin. Her story is one of unshakable courage, relentless curiosity, and a fearless embrace of the unknown.Imagine growing up in a culture that limits your questions, a world where inquiry is stifled, and possibilities feel boxed in by tradition. Yet, from a young age, Shehnaz was an outlier, a seeker of truths that no one dared to ask. "If you're questioning it, it's because it is questionable," she tells us. It is this inherent defiance, this determination to understand life's mysteries, that propelled her from the shores of Karachi, Pakistan, to the cutting-edge laboratories of NASA.Her journey is a masterclass in transformation. As Shehnaz recounts, she arrived in the United States at 21, speaking little English and bound by the constraints of an arranged marriage. But adversity, rather than discouraging her, became her greatest teacher. Her ability to adapt, learn, and persevere led her to a career where she's not only building the technology of tomorrow but also challenging the paradigms of today. She shares with us how working on projects like the International Space Station and the Artemis Moon mission has expanded her understanding of what it means to bridge science and spirituality. In one particularly poignant moment, Shehnaz reflects on her near-death experience at the age of 12—a moment that reshaped her worldview forever. Pulled into the depths of the ocean and on the verge of drowning, she recalls the life review she experienced: “It was like watching a movie of my life, rewinding all the way back to the womb.” This event, she believes, set her on a path of fearless living, free from the fear of death, and imbued her with the clarity to see beyond life's illusions. Her spiritual awakening didn't just fuel her personal growth; it also gave her the courage to challenge societal norms. Despite her demanding role at NASA, Shehnaz devotes herself to raising consciousness, teaching others about the interplay of quantum physics and spirituality. "We are here to live at our highest potential," she says, emphasizing that our limitations are often self-imposed. Her message is clear: we are all capable of creating our own playgrounds of possibility.SPIRITUAL TAKEAWAYSQuestion Everything: Trust your intuition, especially when something feels off. As Shehnaz advises, “Honor the red flags you sense—they're nudges guiding you to greater awareness.”Integrate Creativity and Logic: Shehnaz speaks about balancing her creative and logical sides, allowing each to enhance the other. “The more creative you become, the quicker you solve problems,” she explains.Life Happens for You, Not to You: Shifting this perspective, as Shehnaz suggests, allows us to see obstacles as stepping stones, not barriers. As our conversation wraps up, one thing becomes abundantly clear: Shehnaz's life is a testament to the power of embracing dualities. She thrives in a world where rockets and algorithms coexist with meditations and metaphysical musings. Her journey invites us to do the same, to embrace the richness of our multidimensional selves, and to live courageously, unapologetically, and fully. Please enjoy my conversation with Shehnaz Soni.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/next-level-soul-podcast-with-alex-ferrari--4858435/support.
