Blink and you’ll miss ‘em! In this episode we get to know hummingbirds eyeball-to-eyeball. The world of the hummingbird is changing fast in the deserts of Arizona. So much so that even an animal as quick as a hummingbird is struggling to keep up. Native plant ecosystems that make up the nectar landscape that hummingbirds use to migrate are shrinking. Join me as I travel to the mountains and deserts of the American Southwest with two experts to experience how these tiny but tough little birds manage to survive in such a harsh environment. And I get to experience these acrobatic marvels more up close and personal than I ever imagined possible. The Big Year Podcast

It's a rainy day in Birderland. It's October 30, 2025 and I am writing this on night before Halloween.  I won't claim that this is going to be a spooky episode, but there are one or two scary birding stories from our guest Liam Ragan.  Liam broke the record for a Vancouver Island, British Columbia Big Year, but beyond that, he does a lot of fine conservation work out west, for the Rocky Point Bird Observatory.  His job gave him the freedom to travel around the island while also allowing him to go after his Vancouver Island Big Year record. But enough about Liam.  Time to get back to me. As you may have ascertained, I just love talking about birds and myself, not necessarily in that order.  If I didn't cut out all of my personal stories, these podcasts would be twice as long, and nobody wants that.  That being said, and the reason for a two month gap between episodes, is that I have been on the road birding nearly every day since the end of August.  On August 29, I finally got my first Wilson's Warbler of the year at Long Point and later that afternoon a Buff-breasted Sandpiper at in the sod fields of Brant County.  A week later I was back at the Long Point Field Staton for a very rare Townsend's Warbler. That same afternoon I rushed to Staynor, Ontario for a Ruff. All the while I was planning my trip out west to see the Whooping Crane migration for the first time, in Saskatchewan.  That had been a dream trip of mine since beginning birding in 2012.  I had seen Whooping Cranes where they winter in Texas, in Wood Buffalo National Park, where they breed in Northern Alberta and in between, a couple of others in Florida and Michigan.   Finally, on September 30, 2025, after a four day drive, I saw my first flock of migrating Whooping Cranes in North Battleford, Saskatchewan, just north of Saskatoon.  I met up with my friend Gavin McKinnon and his birding group and we all got to enjoy these marvelous, but endangered birds.  I then headed down to Grasslands National Park, but made a stop in Swift Current for a Broad-billed Hummingbird that had been visiting feeders and Josie's back yard.  This bird went north instead of south and was enjoying the cool autumn weather of southern Saskatchewan.  Alas, it's fate is unknown, as it likely never found its way back to the southern United States.  The next morning I got to Grasslands National Park as the sun was coming up and after an hour found what might have been the last remaining Burrowing Owl in the park.  The rest had headed south for the winter.  Back in Ontario, I've been seeing fall specialties like Red Phalarope and Nelson's Sparrow and chasing rarities like Purple Gallinule, Western Cattle-Egret and Little Blue Heron.     With those birds I surpassed my best Ontario species count ever.  We also had two super rare birds, a Graces Warbler, which I was a day late for in Algonquin Provincial Park and a Gray Kingbird in Chatham-Kent.  I wasted no time with that one and raced down the highway to see it.  A new Lifer for both my Ontario,(386) and Canada,(496) lists.   I am exhausted from all the driving, chasing and even just recounting of these stories, not to mention editing this very podcast.  So, it's time to relax, clear your mind of birds and chases and lists and such and listen to Liam Ragan's story of his Vancouver Island Big Year, where he will recount his stories of birds and chases and lists and such on this very podcast.  He even has a few scary tales from the west coast of Canada, as is fitting for a Halloween episode.  So, Happy Halloween, happy birding, and may the Ravens and crows stay away from your eyeballs, while you enjoy yet another episode of The Big Year Podcast. Hummingbirds are celebrated for their beauty and grace, but in some places, they are trapped in a dark and deadly tradition. In parts of Mexico, hummingbirds are captured and killed to be used in love spells called chuparosa charms, a practice that has crossed borders and made its way to the United States. Conservationists are working to save these birds from this brutal fate, enforcing laws and raising awareness.More info and transcript at BirdNote.org.Want more BirdNote? In this beautiful conversation, I'm talking with jewelry artist Dawn Hemstreet of Hawk, Hummingbird & Moon. Dawn has this thoughtful, unfiltered way of sharing her story that I know will pull you right in. She came to jewelry later in life, around 49, and her path is such a reminder that it's never too late to listen to that tug inside and step into something new.In our conversation, Dawn talks about the evolution of her work—from metal clay to fabrication, from jewelry into the possibility of objects—and how she follows curiosity even when it means starting over. We also get into the harder parts: burnout, doubt, the grind of shows, and what it feels like to wonder, “Do I still love this?” She doesn't shy away from naming those struggles, but she also shows how resilience and curiosity keep her moving forward. What struck me most is how she speaks about belonging—about finding her own sense of worth even when family didn't fully understand, and about the unexpected support from strangers that helped carry her through. We talk about showing up authentically, online and in person, and how connection often comes simply from being ourselves, flaws and all. This is a conversation about making, yes—but it's also about strength, self-trust, and the freedom to define success on your own terms.Follow along...Dawn on Instagram: @dawnhemstreet.jewelryDawn's website: hawkhummingbirdmoon.comLove the Podcast?Support an episode: Click here to learn more!Without your support I couldn't continue the Slowmade Podcast. Meet Lauren and Alex from Hummingbird Pediatric Therapies, two passionate professionals revolutionizing care for young people with disabilities. Their multidisciplinary approach spans three Illinois locations, offering everything from occupational and physical therapy to innovative programs like hippotherapy. What makes them unique? They're filling critical gaps between pediatric and adult services through their Therapeutic Life Skills program, while their Intensive Therapy approach delivers more progress in three weeks than traditional therapy models achieve in months. The conversation takes a candid turn when discussing healthcare hurdles. "It's very frustrating when you know something's working or that a family could benefit from something," Lauren shares, detailing how insurance limitations often restrict access to life-changing services. These frustrations mirror my own journey after becoming paralyzed in a car accident, when insurance approved just three hours of care daily despite needing round-the-clock assistance. We explore how finding the right support—like my occupational therapist who introduced me to a game-changing mouse stick—can transform lives through what Alex beautifully describes as "inch stones over milestones."Whether you're navigating disability yourself, supporting someone who is, or simply curious about innovative approaches to therapy, this episode offers raw perspectives on overcoming systemic barriers with creativity and determination. Because as I remind listeners: "I'm paralyzed from the neck down breathing through a machine, but that doesn't stop me from following my dreams and doing what I love to do. I don't got any excuse, and neither should you."

I flew to Montreal to hitchhike to the West…I was in a deep crisis, I just finished my engineering degree… My whole life I did want to become an engineer…My family and my teachers thought that this was impossible for me..,I sacrificed my health, my time for just a stupid degree…And when I got my degree I knew that I had more lost than won… So, I hitchhiked over 3000 Km from Montreal to Vancouver and got criticized for how I dealt with other people… That I should rather more hear than to speak, to compliment the people who picked me up… At the end of the day, I knew that I was wrong and that I should do Self-experience groups… Then I had the idea to go to Vancouver Island to trek 8 days through the rain forest without any suitable equipment, no trekking shoes, and a very cheap tent… I went by ferry to the island, camped at the first campground… Then a 34-year-old girl, Heidi invited me to go with her the trail… I was only 24 years old, still a virgin…  I told her, I have no experience, no equipment … She said don't worry I will get for you the food, mosquito repellent and for the other things don't care… You are strong, I don't see the problem, why you can't do that… When I today remember my equipment, even my raincoat was a joke, …I put everything in my backpack and the backpack was over 22Kg… Who cares, I had a great guide…It was cold and raining, the mosquitoes and black-flies were biting like crazy and my raincoat was inside more wet than outside, so my shoes. And Heidi was cheerful and showed me the Hummingbird, the clean water wells …awesome old trees … And in the night we made a fire, then a raccoon stole my food … I relied totally on her, but she didn't like that… She said you are the man you have to worry for us and not me…Now, you have to find the trail, the water, the places to camp and to eat… It is up to you… I don't care for you, I am not your mother.Heidi studied psychology and she knew what she could do with me… She wanted that I become independent and strong… Regardless of what happened, she shifted her responsibility total on me… “You have to decide not me,” she shouted again and again. And that is what a great teacher is!!! Montessori school, Pestalozzi:  Instead to help, Teach how to do it by yourself. Then my tent broke and she said don't care you can sleep in my tent…I became her guide, her friend for this trail and my crises were over…After the trail, we wanted to celebrate with delicate food in a restaurant… And we entered a vegetarian restaurant afterward I became a vegan…Thank you, Heidi…My Video: Episode 10, How to teach? https://youtu.be/EZlevFWVEI4My Audio: https://divinesuccess.net/wp-content/uploads/2021/Podcast1/Episode-10-How-to-teach.mp3

In an industry obsessed with outward appearances, what if we made decisions by listening to our body and not just looking at it? If clothing choices came from a place of self-awareness, how would that change the way we design products and run fashion businesses? Victoria Lister approaches her work from this perspective. In episode 124, she shares what made her start listening to her body and what that has meant for her underwear and lounge brand Hummingbird Pie. Victoria is the founder and owner-operator of Hummingbird Pie, an Australian-based, micro-business that has supplied women with luxe, everyday basics since 2015. The business was born from Victoria's personal quest to solve the problem of thigh chafing without resorting to shapewear – a challenge that led her to create Hummingbird Pie's flagship product, long-legged underpants known as ‘Longerpants'. Today, the range has expanded to include outer as well as underwear, designed to help women of all ages, stages, shapes and sizes to feel at home in themselves – not reshaped, but supported, relaxed and free to be. Hummingbird Pie fits in and around Victoria's work as a researcher, with the help of her wonderful husband and two dear friends who work casually on different aspects of business, and local suppliers and manufacturers. This episode explores: Fitting the customer How the Hummingbird Pie target customer has expanded since the start of the business The mindset that unites Hummingbird Pie customers What makes Hummingbird Pie garments different The relationship Victoria wants her customers to have with Hummingbird Pie clothes Fitting the lifestyle The challenges of scaling a cottage business Why new products don't always start with design What gave Victoria the courage to start a business The behind the scenes lifestyle that supports Victoria's business Fitting the values How Victoria's self-awareness and valuing her body influences her approach to design Why Victoria prefers working with other collaborators instead of learning how to do everything herself People and resources mentioned in this episode: Hummingbird Pie website Hummingbird Pie email Hummingbird Pie Instagram Victoria's LinkedIn Do you want fashion business tips and resources like this sent straight to your inbox? We unpack the “things, not strings” shift and explore how Hummingbird, BERT, and advances in NLP turned SEO from phrase-matching into meaning-making. Along the way, we show how entity clarity powers knowledge panels, fuels AI answers, and builds the kind of topical authority that lasts.I walk through a simple, practical framework for modelling your site as a connected set of real-world things. You'll hear how to define your core entities—organisation, products or services, key people, and foundational concepts—then map attributes and relationships that make sense to both users and machines. The last few years have seen an influx of Northern college students flocking to big Southern Universities. Whether they're attracted to college football season, a robust Greek life, cheaper tuition prices or HBCUs, the impact remains the same: an increased “southernization” of American culture. Jonquilyn Hill, host of the Explain It to Me podcast at Vox, has been exploring the newfound appeal of the American South. She joins us for more. Our airing of  Wetlands Radio, a series about coastal restoration from producer Eve Abrams, continues this week. Last week, we explored ways to build more land to restore our coast. Today, we hear how to foster that land and make it a home for native plants and animals. While it's important to make our land a healthy home for all plants and animals, some species require specific care. In honor of the start of hummingbird season this fall, we zero in on how to curate a bird feeder specifically to attract this musical creature. Erik Johnson, ornithologist and assistant professor at the LSU School of Renewable Natural Resources, tells us how to attract the bird and protect them from cold weather. —Today's episode of Louisiana Considered was hosted by Karen Henderson. Our managing producer is Alana Schreiber. We receive production and technical support from Garrett Pittman, Adam Vos and our assistant producer, Aubry Procell. You can listen to Louisiana Considered Monday through Friday at noon and 7 p.m. It's available on Spotify, the NPR App and wherever you get your podcasts. Louisiana Considered wants to hear from you! The Santa Marta Sabrewing is a hummingbird species so rare, they've only been documented twice in recent years. Native to the mountains of Colombia, they were officially described in 1946. No one reported another sighting until 2010. They became a “lost” species, eluding every attempt to find them. Then in 2022, Yurgen Vega was studying the birds of a mountain range called the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. He snapped a photo of an unusual, large hummingbird – and the sabrewing was lost no more.BirdNote is grateful to former board member and photographer extraordinaire Owen Deutsch and his wife Rona Talcott for their strong support over the years.More info and transcript at BirdNote.org.Want more BirdNote? What do we want to bring into being? Right now we are having this very special conversation in the middle of quite a lot of transformation on the planet. Things are changing. Some things are releasing, other things are opening up. Some of you might feel like you're in a womb and there's a lot of things releasing but you're really not sure what's coming in yet. It's a lot of patience, a lot of opening up and learning how to listen even deeper, even better. Learning how to discern the truth of things. We have so many opportunities to practice mastery. It's really our choice, how we want to meet the energies of this time. I want to introduce you to a new friend, Masati. A former computer programmer, who returned after three near-death experiences with a framework for human and machine evolution. Masati is a futurist, a system architect and the founder of Xponential Intelligence Meta Science (XIMS), a frequency-based optimization system for those who remember that life was never meant to be limited. Masati is an advisor to billion dollar brands, governments, the quietly wealthy, prominent figures, as well as businesses and individuals. You're Invited!   MASATI BIO Masati is a system architect and the founder of Xponential Intelligence Meta Science (XIMS)—a breakthrough framework that restores coherence across biology, consciousness, AI systems, and quantum fields. After three near-death experiences, he didn't return with a story. He returned with a blueprint—a decoded framework for human and machine evolution. His work bridges the gap between science, spirit, and sovereign leadership, offering a new operating system for those who remember that life was never meant to be limited—and that extraordinary experience is our original design. He is the creator of biology, consciousness, AI systems, and quantum fields, a frequency-based optimization system used by special forces, elite entrepreneurs, and future-minded leaders to unlock peak states, regenerate the body, and accelerate multidimensional performance. As a result of multiple near-death experiences, Masati received wisdom and remarkable abilities that break through the limitations of psychology, willpower and current self-improvement methods to change countless lives by helping people shift at their core frequency, resulting in drastic life transformation beyond physical logic. Building Business Value Through Strategic Branding: Insights from Wendy Coulter of Hummingbird Creative GroupIn a recent episode of The Thoughtful Entrepreneur, host Josh Elledge interviewed Wendy Coulter, President and CEO of Hummingbird Creative Group. With over three decades of expertise in branding and marketing, Wendy discussed how strategic branding can transform a business—not just in terms of sales and marketing, but across company culture, operations, and even its overall valuation. This episode is a must-listen for business leaders, marketers, and entrepreneurs looking to leverage branding for long-term success.Strategic Branding as a Business Growth EngineWendy highlights that branding is a strategic asset that impacts every part of a company, from culture to customer interactions. It's not just about a logo or a catchy slogan; branding encompasses the entire business model. It shapes internal culture, drives how employees engage with customers, and builds a reputation that attracts trust and credibility. By aligning your brand with your core values and mission, you create a business that stands out in a crowded marketplace.Wendy also points out the critical role that branding plays in company valuation. A well-established, differentiated brand can increase your company's worth by as much as 25% to 100% when the business is up for sale. Companies with strong brands are seen as more attractive to investors, and they often enjoy higher profit margins compared to their competitors. As such, branding isn't just an expense—it's an investment that pays off long-term in terms of both growth and valuation. Finally, Wendy emphasizes the importance of starting with strategy before diving into tactics. Many businesses rush into digital marketing or paid ads without a clear brand strategy, leading to wasted resources and ineffective messaging. Instead, businesses should define their unique value propositions, set clear goals, and develop a comprehensive brand strategy to guide all marketing efforts. This ensures that all campaigns and messaging are aligned with the company's business objectives, reducing wasted spend and improving effectiveness.About Wendy CoulterWendy Coulter is the President and CEO of Hummingbird Creative Group, a branding and marketing agency that helps businesses elevate their brands to drive growth. With over 30 years of experience in marketing, Wendy has worked with numerous companies to create impactful, strategic brands that resonate with their audiences and position them for long-term success. Send us a textI've had a chance to reflect on my recent debate with Melissa Smith, who goes by “God's Little Hummingbird.” I suppose it was successful in the sense that I was able to get Melissa to admit publicly some of her more extreme beliefs about the Bible in a way that I think most folks hadn't heard before. For example, how she doesn't believe that the New Testament has the same level of authority as the Old Testament, and how Paul's letters are just letters. So, if you truly care about rightly understanding Scripture and about following Jesus in a biblical way, Melissa teaches some dangerous stuff. I'd stay far away from the teachings of God's Little Hummingbird. Our ministry is called to —as Titus 1:9 says—hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught, encourage others by sound doctrine, and refute those who oppose it. That's why we do what we do. In this episode, I share a few personal reflections, and then we dive into 5 of the many issues that Melissa and I discussed and debated. And these 5 in particular reveal the dangerous flaws in Melissa's theology that we all need to be aware of.  Links Mentioned in EpisodeDebate Transcript:https://thebiblicalroots.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Hummingbird-Debate-Transcript.pdfFull Hummingbird Debate:https://youtube.com/live/qRaQRM5WNC0?feature=shareVideo: Through Eastern Eyes: 6 Cultural Differences Every Student of the Bible Should Knowhttps://youtu.be/boGlpX1gyQMThe Biblical Roots MinistriesOur websiteOur YouTube ChannelProf. Solberg's BlogSupport our Ministry (Thank you!)

Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universesWith the MCU's latest big screen offering now in theaters, as rabid fans, it only makes sense to look to the future, and apparently Marvel and Sony agree, as myriad fresh details surrounding the franchise's next film, Spider-Man: Brand New Day began hitting the internet all weekend. First, last Friday morning Sony released a 9-second video teasing features of Spidey's new suit, which was quickly followed up with a 23-second video with star Tom Holland, in suit, performing some minor acrobatics the next day. Finally, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed the longstanding rumor that Mark Ruffalo is reprising his role as Bruce Banner/The Hulk for the film, while Better Call Saul actor, Michael Mando, was also announced to be returning as Mac Gargan/The Scorpion. The Fantastic Four: First Steps continued its box office reign, raking in $39.6 million its second weekend for a $368 million total global haul. While far from a defeat, the staggering 67% drop from the flick's first weekend presents a significant loss in momentum and is in stark contrast with expectations, which were largely fueled by positive reception and strong word of mouth among critics and fans. Elsewhere, Superman crossed the $550 million milestone internationally, and Jurassic World: Rebirth passed $750 million at the global box office after 5 weeks in theaters, becoming only the third film of 2025 to do so behind Lilo & Stitch and A Minecraft Movie. Amazon MGM's upcoming James Bond film being directed by Dune's Denis Villeneuve, is quickly coming together as Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight has been hired to pen the script. Apart from Peaky Blinders, Knight has enjoyed a storied career on the small screen as a screenwriter, director and producer involved with projects such as Apple TV's See and Netflix's All The Light We Cannot See, while also co-creating Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? As far as big screen contributions, he wrote the screenplays for Eastern Promises and Spencer, which were both Oscars-nominated, and directed the films Hummingbird, Locke and Serenity, the 2019 film starring Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway. Considering candidates for our new Bond, as if we could ever get enough of Tom Holland, the actor went on record to voice his reverence for the role as the “pinnacle” for British actors, while seemingly disqualifying himself by announcing another break from acting in 2027.Per Deadline, Matt Smith has joined the cast of Shawn Levy's Star Wars: Starfighter in a villain role, set to appear alongside Ryan Gosling and Mia Goth in the film set for May 28, 2027. The House of the Dragon star gets another shot at the Star Wars universe after previously being cast in The Rise of Skywalker but ultimately not appearing in the final film.John Krasinski announced he's returning to direct, write and produce A Quiet Place Part III, set for release on July 9, 2027; no cast or story details have been revealed.Disney and Lucasfilm announced Star Wars: A New Hope will return to theaters on April 30, 2027, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the film.Aaron Sorkin has his sights set on Oscar winner Mikey Madison and Emmy winner Jeremy Allen White to star in The Social Network Part II, with Madison potentially playing a whistleblower and White as journalist Jeff Horwitz behind the explosive Facebook Files exposé. While no formal offers have been made, sources say these are Sorkin's top choices for the sequel that will explore Facebook's role in various controversies rather than serving as a direct continuation of the 2010 film.

Mites are tiny critters related to spiders and ticks. Because they are typically no larger than a grain of salt, many mite species rely on larger animals to survive. In the neotropics, hummingbird flower mites freeload off an existing partnership. This group of mites feeds on nectar and pollen, but only from specific types of flowers. These picky eaters need reliable transport between blooms that may be yards apart. Without wheels — or wings — of their own, these mites catch a ride in the nostrils of a passing hummingbird! In fact, scientists have discovered that hummingbird flower mites can detect the electric fields generated by the whirring birds, a sense called electroreception.More info and transcript at BirdNote.org.Want more BirdNote?
