Beyond Reason with Gage Dansby

A quick recap on the history of the rivalry between NBA point guards Damien Lillard and Russell Westbrook that began way back in 2016. Since then the trash talk has been off the rails and culminated into one of the greatest rivalries in the modern NBA, and the playoff series between the Trail Blazers and Thunder took that rivalry to a whole new level. Gage breaks down every antic Russ and Dame had in the series, and how Lillard got the ultimate last laugh by sinking one of the greatest buzzer beaters in NBA playoff history.

It seems that controversy in the world of college basketball never seems to stop. Months after the FBI and NCAA's joint investigation indicting Adidas employees regarding the bribing of players to attend colleges that they outfit, now Nike is being accused of doing the same thing. Plus, Dwane Wade and Dirk Nowitzki are celebrated for their tremendous careers as they retire, and how we should be more lenient on referees.

The Final Four is finally hear, but it wasn't exactly the smoothest road to get here. Sports media has been drooling over Zion Williamson the moment he announced his commitment to Duke basketball last year. Since then, you couldn't escape the name Zion even if you tried. Sports media was talking about him at every waking moment and salivating over his talent. But now that Duke isn't in the Final Four, what do they do? Simple, lower their recognition and respect to the team that beat them: Michigan State. From digging up old controversies to flat out ignoring the team, sports media let MSU know that Duke was their favorite, and still talking about how great Zion is in the process. Has this gone too far?

In the midst of March Madness, several prominent NFL players and one particular UFC fighter announce their retirements. Gage breaks down the careers of these athletes and their impact on the sport to give them a proper send off. But things might not seem so simple, people are skeptical around two of these retirements even being real, and how they might just be ploys to gain publicity and money. Spoiler Alert: the athletes are Rob Gronkowski, Jordy Nelson, TJ Lang and Connor McGregor. Guess which retirements people are skeptical about...

In this week's episode Gage breaks down the beginning of the 2019 NCAA March Madness tournament, including some predictions on how the rest of the tournament is going to play out. Additionally, Gage touches on how it seems that the ACC is the golden child that can do no wrong for the NCAA tournament selection committee, making all other conferences look second-class (even if they deserve more recognition than ACC teams).

In this episode Gage breaks down the nationwide college admissions scandal where wealthy parents are bribing standardized test proctors and college athletic departments to get their kids into prestigious universities. Additionally, Gage talks about the upcoming 20 year anniversary of the most destructive night in East Lansing, Michigan history: the 1999 Michigan State riots.

This week tackles how New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft might have celebrated his team's Super Bowl victory a little too much, since he was just charged with solicitation of a prostitute in Juniper, Florida. Additionally, Gage talks about the Manny Machado contract with the San Diego Padres that is now the second biggest player contract in professional sports history (and how Machado could be the saving grace for a city that continues to lose it's sporting footprint). Finally, after Zion Williamson practically rips his shoe in half during a basketball game against North Carolina (causing a knee sprain), people are immediately going after Nike for faulty shoes, but don't go tearing them down just yet... A lot of hostilities seem to be going on the world of sports these days. This week's episode starts off with the recently passed NFL trade deadline, where for some reason the Detroit Lions thought it was a good idea to trade one of their best receivers for a 3rd round draft pick. Classic Lions indeed. Next comes the latest standings in the college football playoff, and how current #4 seed Michigan can keep their rank to represent the Big Ten only to probably lose to the behemoth that is Alabama. In the basketball sector I debate what's more important: a great individual performance or a team win? Finally, we end with the top news story of the day which centers around a new space race to see who can get a man to Mars first: the United States, China, or movie supervillian in the making, Elon Musk.

While most of the NBA has been celebrating Halloween the old fashioned way (dressed in costumes for the walk to the locker room, horror movie reference while they play, etc.) Jimmy Butler is trying to create a real life horror flick with the Minnesota Timberwolves, by intentionally placing himself on the injured reserve. Meanwhile, The University of Maryland's athletic department had a sudden change of heart and decided to fire head football coach DJ Durkin just 24 hours after they told everyone he was going to stay. You can thank one group for that: the players. Finally, I close out with some tech culture and marvel in the idea that a certain entertainment product made over $725 million in it's first 3 days on the shelves. While this might seem impressive, there is a tragedy in all of this: no one pays attention to the ones who made it.

On this episode I bring back Sergei Harvey to give an update on the Khabib Nurmagomedov situation, where apparently he wants to take on Floyd Mayweather in a boxing match (where have we seen this before?). We also dive deep into the Michigan vs. Michigan State rivalry ahead of their football game on October 20, and bring up the beginning of the NBA season, which somehow leads to the perfect basketball short height, wondering where Lavar Ball went, naming off NCAA athletic scandals and the possibility of 21 Savage creating a cooking show. But here's the catch, Butler has all the leverage. LeVeon Bell's contract dispute with the Steelers seem to never end. But something needs to happen fast. He needs to play, not just for the sake of his contract loopholes, but (selfishly) for the sake of my fantasy team. An Indianapolis Colts offensive lineman literally played with a broken back next Thursday. I'll tell you why things could have gotten much worse for him, and how it alludes to the decline of the NFL as a whole.

As the Silicon Valley saying goes, if you’re not paying for the product, then you are the product. Additionally, I touch on the crisis at Howard University and it’s financial aid office, where a student worker and various faculty conned students out of more than $435,000 in financial aid.

Today I recap the NCAA tournament, including all of the upsets that no one saw coming, specifically UMBC taking down Virginia, making them the first 16 seed to ever beat a 1 seed in tournament history.

Final preparation for March Madness, arguably the best time of the year in sports and how the ongoing NCAA corruption scandal might impact viewership. The time of year for new music for the spring/summer is upon us, Xbox brings back it’s hideous “Duke” controller that debuted in 2001, and the Cleveland Browns making trades left & right, causing me to speculate that they might be doing too much in too little time.

In this episode I talk about the payment corruption scandal that is currently sweeping the college basketball world. The FBI is involved and says that the contents of the investigation could only change college basketball, but the entire NCAA and it’s student athletes. I give a breakdown of how this whole thing started, my interpretations on the investigation (including a rant on how I think the NCAA is completely corrupt), and what might the future entail for college athletics. Spoiler alert: it involves the end of the NCAA altogether.
