Your Faith Journey - Finding God Through Words, Song and Praise
Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures, and he said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Messiah is to suffer and to rise from the dead on the third day and that repentance and forgiveness of sins is to be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. Luke 24:45-48 But what had to happen in order for the disciples' minds to be opened? Jesus had first addressed them with ‘Peace be with you'. This peace in Hebrew is shalom. Shalom is more than just no stress or anxiety. It is about a well-being from the inside out. Jesus was sharing his peace with them and inviting them into it. As a community of faith, we experience anxiety especially in times of transition and change. We have been getting to know each other. There was an initial meeting by zoom with the council. My live introduction to you was the weekend of the Green Team Sunday last April. I had met some of the leadership on that Saturday night. I was introduced to the congregation, and I believe I read a lesson and participated in the distribution of Holy Communion. Oh yes, I sang with the choir. After the service was a congregational meeting. While the congregation voted I waited in the library. I waited and waited, and it may have been Addie who went by on her way out and gave me a thumbs up. Thus, it was a positive vote. I thought it was okay then to go back out to meet those who were going out to lunch with me. There was a bit of anxiety until I had the thumbs up. This is all normal. We can say God's will be done, but as humans there can always be doubt or anxiety. We have taken this time of transition on together and are making great progress. The transition team has reviewed the demographics provided for us by Pastor David Sprang from our synod staff. Thanks to Rich, we are able to see those demographics scrolling in the narthex. We have also been formulating our gifts from our “Conversation With the Congregation”. This past week a few members of the Transition Team met with Katie Love to hear more specifically about the needs of our community. At our next team meeting we will formulate goals to present to you on Sunday, May 5. This takes a great deal of work, but our transition team is working hard through this process. We continue to learn, and many connections are being made as our system here is beginning to reform. This will mean changes, but it is still a work in process. This can create anxiety, and this is normal. Without some anxiety or doubt, we don't ask the questions in which to learn about ourselves and God's will. Let's see what Jesus used to calm the anxieties of the disciples. We already mentioned the shalom peace that he offered to them. They thought Jesus was a ghost and he said look at my hands and my feet. Touch me and see, if you need to, as a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have. Jesus could see that they were still not sure, even though there was some joy expressed. Thus, he asked them for a piece of fish that was prepared over a fire. They had had many meals with Jesus. One that they probably remembered was the feeding of the 5,000 men, besides women and children where there was 5 loaves and 2 fish. Also, the story before our Gospel lesson this morning, is the Walk to Emmaus where Jesus broke bread at the end of the day and their hearts were burning as they had experienced Jesus' presence. They knew in that familiar meal, that this was Jesus, their risen Messiah. It is in the familiar that that they and we find peace in the midst of anxiety. Consider what we do here on Sunday morning. We hear the Word and receive the sacrament, Jesus. This is where we can find peace. It is familiar. It is one place where we encounter Jesus through Word, Sacrament, music and each other. This is why if there are too many things different in worship we feel a little uncomfortable. I'm not saying it isn't healthy for us to do new things, but too many at one time and our uncomfortableness can become a hinderance in having open minds to understand the scriptures. Jesus also reminded the disciples of what they had learned from their Jewish faith through the law given to Moses, the prophets, the Psalms and what Jesus, himself had taught them. He said, thus it is written, that the Messiah is to suffer and to rise from the dead on the third day, and the repentance and forgiveness of sins is to be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. Jesus tells them that they are witnesses of these things. Again, Jesus was bringing the familiar stories back to their memories. He was pointing out that what he said would happen to him had happened. Then in a sense we have Luke's Great commission. Now it is the disciple's call to proclaim in Jesus' name repentance and forgiveness of sins to all nations beginning with Jerusalem. They are called to be witnesses or a record of these things that they have learned, seen and experienced. This does not mean that they won't have anxiety and doubts, but that their minds will be more open to understand the scriptures in the light of the resurrected Jesus. Jesus had been reframing the law given to Moses and the prophets in all of his teaching. The Greek word for understand is soon-ee'-ay-mee which means to bring together, which for the disciples meant everything that they learned in their Jewish faith and what Jesus had been teaching them. It is about seeing how all of it connects. This could only begin to happen when they could trust Jesus. That is when anxiety decreases, when we realize that there is a person whom we can trust. Is that not the reason we come here on Sunday to be reminded of how much God loves all people? Even though we may have heard the Biblical stories before through our three year lectionary cycle, when our minds are open we can hear something different every time. This is the process that the transition team is going through and which you have been invited into and have participated. Remember I just said that connections were being made as we processed through Who we are, in other words how God has gifted us; and Who our neighbor is by reviewing demographics and meeting with Katie, and now we are working on What is God calling us to do. The more open that we are, the more that God in Jesus Christ can reveal to us. There is an energy here that the Holy Spirit is creating to move forward. It can be exciting and yet create anxiety all at the same time. The key is for us, as it was for the disciples, is whom we place our trust. We come back again to where is our mind and heart are focused. Today we gather to sing praises, hear the Word and share in the sacrament. I always believe that Jesus has something for us to hear every time that we gather together. How much we hear is based on letting go of those things that bring us anxiety. Jesus greets us today with ‘Peace be with you'. He offers us shalom, inviting us to rest in him. We are challenged, as the disciples were to go out and be witnesses to that which we have heard and experienced here. Being witnesses is tapping into the source which is in within us. Then he opened our minds to understand the scriptures, and he says to us, “You have heard the message that was written, that the Messiah was to suffer and to rise from the dead on the third day 47 and that repentance and forgiveness of sins was to be proclaimed in his name to our neighbors, beginning in Okemos, Williamston and….. Jesus says to us today you are my witnesses. Let us pray: Great God you have called us to be witnesses here in this place and neighborhood. May your Spirit continue to help us rest in your peace that our anxiety and doubt may be in the background that our minds may be open to understand your scriptures and your direction for us. You give us what we need to do your ministry here in this place, in our neighborhood. May your Spirit continually help us to tap into the tools and the energy that you provide for us to be your witnesses. In Jesus' name, Amen

Your Faith Journey - Finding God Through Words, Song and Praise
I am sure some of you remember former United States Senator John Ashcroft, who also served as Attorney General during the George W. Bush Administration. A story has been told about his father, J. Robert Ashcroft. I don't know if this tale is true, however, it provides a great illustration. According to the story, in January of 1995, J. Robert Ashcroft had fewer than forty-eight hours to live and he was holding on to life, hoping to see his son, John, sworn in as a US Senator the following day. As his family and friends gathered around, J. Robert Ashcroft asked his son to play the piano while everyone sang, “We Are Standing On Holy Ground.” After the song, the frail old man spoke some powerful words, saying, “John, I want you to know that even Washington can be holy ground. Wherever you hear the voice of God, that ground is sanctified. It's a place where God can call you to serve him. Wherever we are in our vocation…..that place is a holy place of service for God.” Called! It is one of the great biblical themes. God calls! And all who follow Jesus are called. Wherever we are in our vocation, whatever we are doing with our lives, God calls us. Even in a place like Washington, DC. Even in places like Okemos, Haslett, Williamston, East Lansing, Perry, Mason, Holt, Laingsburg, Owosso, Dansville, DeWitt, Grand Ledge, Charlotte, Eaton Rapids, St. Johns, and Lansing, MI. Even in the most unlikely of places and situations, God calls us, and that place is a holy place of service for God. It is holy ground. In today's gospel reading, we hear the call stories of Simon, Andrew, James, and John. All these men were fishermen. Now, at that point in time, fishing was not a relaxing, easy job. It was hard, difficult, dirty work. There was nothing easy about it. Anyway, as we meet up with Jesus in today's reading, we find him walking beside the lake one afternoon and he sees these four fishermen busily working. Two are trying to catch fish and two are mending their nets. As he walks by, Jesus disrupts what they are doing and says to each of them, “Follow me.” Truthfully, the response of the four men makes me wonder. Their response is rather hard to believe, because Jesus essentially offers them a job with no pay when he says, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of people.” Jesus does not say, “Come, follow me, and make more money than you could ever make fishing.” I could understand a response to that summons. But no. Jesus' call and the response of the four really seems implausible. And yet, the gospel reading today says they immediately dropped their nets, they immediately dropped what they were doing to head off to God-knows-where, to lives that were uncertain and a life they could not begin to imagine! The disciples' immediate acceptance of Jesus' unusual invitation is a dramatic, life changing encounter. Jesus comes along, disrupts their lives, and summons them from the fabric of family relationships. He summons them from the midst of the workaday world. And he calls them into a new set of relationships and a new vocation. I must say, this is one big, heavy duty fish story!! Many of us, throughout life, face big decisions about family, about jobs, about faith. There are times in our lives when we stand at a fork in the road and must make decisions. Sometimes, there are experiences in our lives when we need to take risks. And there are even times in our lives when we must sacrifice something to follow Jesus. But chances are that for most of us, the situation will never be as dramatic as it was for these four disciples. It is not very often that we drop everything to start a new life. And yet, the call is the same for each one of us. Jesus comes along, disrupts our lives, and summons us from the fabric of family relationships. He summons us from the midst of the workaday world. And he calls us into a new set of relationships, a new vocation. God calls us, each in our own setting, to repent, to turn in a new direction, to open our lives to a radical renewal that may upset and re-orient our neat little, hard-won patterns of comfort and familiarity. God calls each of us to follow and open our lives to a radical change that will upset our unquestioned assumptions and the privilege we enjoy without even being aware of it. Just how willing are we to have our lives turned upside down in order to follow this Jesus? Truthfully, we might have questions about such a call, a call where Jesus disrupts what we are doing and seemingly calls us to abandon family and occupation. Well, I really don't think Jesus asks us to abandon family or work. But God calls us to live differently within those relationships. Our work and family life are transformed when God calls us to follow. The disruption in our lives and the call to follow is not to destroy, but to renew, and our lives are transformed in the process. And yet, the call to follow does mean leaving something behind. Following Jesus means letting go of old securities and certainties and trusting the God who promises to be with us wherever we go. It means leaving behind that which has enslaved us, leaving behind that which controls us, letting go of the fear that imprisons us, and letting go of our need to control. And the call to follow Jesus means letting go of self-centeredness, that intense focus on self. Remember what Dietrich Bonhoeffer once said, “When Christ calls a man, he bids him come and die.” Following Jesus means living a countercultural life and dying to self as we are summoned from life's easy ruts of comfort and safety to enter the future without knowing exactly where we are headed. Yes, we do leave something behind. But the call to follow means finding security in a new place. When we follow Jesus, it means we live our life under new management as Jesus becomes Lord of our life. To be called means we are invited into a relationship with Jesus, and that relationship is all about love, grace, and compassion. To follow Jesus means being led by the one who frees us, who embraces us, and who lovingly claims us as God's own. And what we will find out as we follow Jesus, is that living in relationship with him connects us to a whole new set of relationships. Jesus not only calls us, but then sends us out to be fishers of people. We will find that the grace that calls us and the love that invites us leads us to new places in life, and that means we will form some new, even unlikely relationships – sometimes relationships with people we would otherwise never meet. We will find that, just as the disciples were sent, we, too, will be sent to fish for people, carrying God's message of love and proclaiming the good news of a gracious God to a hurting, broken world. And there is nothing more sacred than carrying and proclaiming that news. There is nothing more sacred than walking with people through life's painful times and sharing God's good news of grace. There is nothing more sacred than walking with people through the tough, challenging times of life, and sharing the good news of God's love. Yes, it is grace that calls us, love that invites us, and it is compassion that moves us and takes us forth to do this work of discipleship. And, wherever we are called to serve, we will find ourselves in a sacred place, we will find ourselves on holy ground. Even as we work with the former residents of Knob Hill apartments, as we work with the refugees in our care, as we gather food for the hungry and daily stock the pantries, as we sit with people in the hospital, as we hold the hands of the dying, as we have coffee with someone who is hurting, as we sit behind our desks at work and interact with our colleagues, as we do the work of advocacy and seek justice for the most vulnerable in this world. I think that is precisely what J. Robert Ashcroft was trying to communicate to his son, John. God calls us every hour of every day, wherever we find ourselves, to share the good news of God's love in a broken world. That is the call, the vocation, and the mission of each one of us! And when we do this, we stand on holy ground.

Beal was limited to 21:49 because of back tightness, although he was able to return late in the third quarter after missing the entire second. The Wizards actually broke the game open without him and cruised to a lopsided victory. Kristaps Porzingis scored 20 points, Will Barton contributed 16 and Beal was able to finish with 13. Bojan Bogdanovic led Detroit with 25 points and Cade Cunningham added 19. Tonight Atlanta Hawks at Detroit Pistons, 7:00 p.m. Indiana Pacers at Chicago Bulls, 8:00 p.m. NBA – NBA, NBPA seeking more respectful tone at all levels of game The NBA and its players have announced a plan to encourage better and more respectful behavior within basketball, even at youth levels. It’s part of the league’s “Respect for the Game” initiative. The NBA has been using that term with players for nearly two decades, primarily hoping to foster more positive interactions between players and referees during games. WNBA – Russian court rejects Griner appeal of her 9-year sentence A Russian court has rejected an appeal by U.S. basketball star Brittney Griner of her nine-year prison sentence for drug possession, a step that could move her closer to a possible high-stakes prisoner swap between Moscow and Washington. The all-star center with the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury and two-time Olympic gold medalist was convicted Aug. 4 after police said they found vape canisters containing cannabis oil in her luggage at a Moscow airport. Reflecting pressure on the U.S. administration to do more to bring Griner home, the U.S. secretary of state revealed in July that Washington had made a proposal to get Griner home, along with Paul Whelan, an American serving a 16-year sentence in Russia for espionage. NHL – National Hockey League Last Night New Jersey Devils 6, Detroit Red Wings 2 Chicago Blackhawks 4, Florida Panthers 2 Devils 6, Red Wings 2 – Bratt scores 2, Devils hand Wings first regulation loss, 6-2 Jesper Bratt had two goals and an assist as the New Jersey Devils beat the Detroit Red Wings 6-2. Chicago overcame two-goal deficits in its previous three wins, but had to hold on against the Panthers in the final 10 minutes. Eetu Luostarinen and Matthew Tkachuk scored for the Panthers. Tkachuk’s goal, on a nifty mid-air deflection of Carter Verhaeghe’s point shot, closed the gap to 3-2 with 7:13 to play. Chicago goalie Alex Stalock, stopped 29 shots. MLB – Tigers hire Rays’ Rob Metzler as VP, assistant GM The Detroit Tigers have hired Tampa Bay scouting director Rob Metzler as vice president and assistant general manager. Metzler spent 15 seasons with the Rays, working the past seven years as the team’s senior director of amateur scouting. He will lead the Tigers’ amateur and international scouting departments, working under president of baseball operations Scott Harris. Detroit finished 66-96 in 2022 and has not made the playoffs in eight years. Harris took over the front office after longtime general manager Al Avila was fired in August. NFL – NFL says referees didn’t get Mike Evans’ autograph The NFL says the two game officials seen interacting with Tampa Bay wide receiver Mike Evans in the tunnel of Bank of America Stadium after the Buccaneers’ 21-3 loss to the Carolina Panthers on Sunday didn’t ask for an autograph. The league released a statement saying the interaction “did not involve a request by the game officials for an autograph” and the officials were reminded of the “importance of avoiding even the appearance of impropriety” when interacting with players. NFL officials are banned from asking for autographs or memorabilia under their labor contract. Evans said Tuesday he was talking about golf with the referees. NFL – Titans release renderings of proposed new domed stadium The Tennessee Titans’ proposed domed stadium would seat approximately 60,000 people and cover 1.7 million square feet under renderings released Tuesday. The renderings show the stadium with porches and outdoor terraces providing views of Nashville, a circular translucent roof and a variety of areas for fans. An architect has not yet been hired. The new stadium would cost $1.2 billion in public funding and is considered to be the largest public commitment for an NFL stadium to date. The release follows last week’s announcement of a deal for $760 million in local financing that still must be approved by the Nashville council and sports authority. Golf – LIV Golf team finale set for Doral, PGA Tour goes to Bermuda LIV Golf heads to Trump National Doral in Miami this weekend for the finale of the Saudi-funded series’ inaugural season. A dozen four-man teams will play for a $50 million purse, the biggest ever in golf, with each winning team member getting $4 million. Dustin Johnson and his “4 Aces” are the top seed. The PGA Tour heads to Bermuda for the Butterfield Bermuda Championship. Lucas Herbert of Australia is not returning to defend his title. The field features only one player from the top 50 in the world ranking. The European tour is in Portugal for the Portugal Masters. Illinois has the top-ranked defensive unit in the nation, followed by No. 2 Ohio State. Michigan is ranked fifth in defense. Iowa was propped up by its tough defense before running into the speeding Buckeyes last week. The Hawkeyes are still sixth best in the nation. Rutgers and Minnesota have needed the help of their defenses, ranked seventh and 12th, respectively, to stay above .500. MLB – La Russa steps down as White Sox manager over health issues Tony La Russa stepped down as manager of the Chicago White Sox because of a pair of health issues. The announcement ends a disappointing two-year run in the same spot where the Hall of Famer got his first job as a big league skipper. La Russa is a three-time World Series champion who turns 78 on Tuesday. He left the team on Aug. 30 because of issues with a pacemaker that was implanted in February. La Russa says a different, previously diagnosed health problem led to his departure. La Russa directed Chicago to the AL Central title last year, but the team fell short of expectations this season. MLB – Major League Baseball Last Night Detroit Tigers 4, Seattle Mariners 3 Chicago White Sox 3, Minnesota Twins 2 Cincinnati Reds 3, Chicago Cubs 1 Tigers 4, Mariners 3 – Mariners to start playoffs on road after 4-3 loss to Tigers The Seattle Mariners will start their first playoff trip in two decades on the road after a costly 4-3 loss to the Detroit Tigers, who got a two-run homer from Javier Báez. Sam Haggerty singled with two outs in the ninth inning and hurt his left groin while sliding into second base on a successful steal. He needed assistance to leave the field, an arm draped over manager Scott Servais and an athletic trainer. Haggerty is scheduled for an MRI on Tuesday. Andrew Chafin struck out Carlos Santana for his third save. Seattle will open a best-of-three series at Toronto or Cleveland on Friday. White Sox 3, Twins 2 – Cueto helps White Sox beat Twins after La Russa steps down The Chicago White Sox watched manager Tony La Russa announce he was leaving his position, and then beat the Minnesota Twins 3-2 behind Johnny Cueto’s seven effective innings. La Russa stepped down because of a pair of health issues, punctuating a disappointing season for the Hall of Famer in the same spot where he got his first job as a big league skipper. Josh Harrison hit a two-run homer in Chicago’s fourth win in five games. Minnesota dropped to 9-19 in its last 28 games. Gio Urshela hit a two-run homer, and Bailey Ober pitched five innings of two-hit ball. Reds 3, Cubs 1 – Reds avoid 100th loss, beat Cubs 3-1 behind Hunter Greene Hunter Greene pitched six scoreless innings and the Cincinnati Reds remained at 99 losses, beating the Chicago Cubs 3-1. The Reds are 61-99 this season. They snapped a six-game skid and can avoid losing at least 100 games for the second time in franchise history if they sweep the three-game series against Chicago. Cincinnati finished 61-101 in 1982. Greene and relievers Derek Law, Buck Farmer and Alexis Diaz combined on a two-hitter to stop the Cubs’ winning streak at seven games. Chicago only got one runner past second base before scoring in the ninth against Diaz, who picked up his 10th save. Jeff Wilson Jr. also scored on a 32-yard run that gave the Niners their seventh straight regular-season win over their in-state rivals. The Rams won the matchup that meant most in last season’s NFC championship game on the way to a Super Bowl title, but this meeting looked more like their recent regular-season meetings. San Francisco used a relentless defense to slow down coach Sean McVay’s offense and got enough big plays for the win. NHL – National Hockey League – Preseason Last Night Pittsburgh Penguins 3, Detroit Red Wings 2 NBA – National Basketball Association – Preseason Tonight Detroit Pistons at New York Knicks, 7:00 p.m. New Orleans Pelicans at Chicago Bulls, 9:30 p.m. WNBA – Russian court sets Brittney Griner appeal date for Oct. 25 A Russian court has set a date for American basketball star Brittney Griner’s appeal against her nine-year prison sentence for drug possession. It has been scheduled for Oct. 25. Griner is an eight-time all-star center with the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury and a two-time Olympic gold medalist. She was convicted Aug. 4 after police said they found vape canisters containing cannabis oil in her luggage at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport. The Moscow region court said Monday it will hear her appeal. Griner’s lawyers argued after the conviction that the punishment was excessive. NWSL – Abuse in women’s pro soccer league was systemic, report says An independent investigation into the scandals that erupted in the National Women’s Soccer League found emotional abuse and sexual misconduct were systemic in the sport, impacting multiple teams, coaches and players. U.S. Soccer commissioned the investigation by former acting U.S. Attorney General Sally Yates and a law firm after former NWSL players Sinead Farrelly and Mana Shim came forward with allegations of harassment and sexual coercion dating back a decade. But it was clear the problems were widespread. Five of the 10 head coaches in the league last season either were fired or stepped down amid allegations of misconduct. Running – Man, 36, dies after running in London Marathon Organizers of the London Marathon say a 36-year-old man died after running in the race on Sunday. He died in a hospital in London. The organizers expressed their “sincere condolences” to the man’s friends and family. The cause of death has yet to be established. Fishing – Authorities probing report of scandal at fishing tournament Prosecutors in Cleveland are investigating an apparent cheating scandal during a lucrative walleye fishing tournament over the weekend on Lake Erie. A Twitter video shows Jason Fischer, tournament director for the Lake Erie Walleye Trail event, on Friday cutting open walleye and finding lead weights and prepared fish filets inside the winning catch of five fish to bolster their weight. Anglers Jacob Runyan and Chase Cominsky were disqualified. Messages seeking comment were left Monday with Runyan, Cominsky and Fischer. A spokesperson for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources says ODNR officers gathered evidence. Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael O’Malley in a statement said “these individuals will be held accountable.” Olympics – Publishing executive charged in Tokyo Olympic bribes scandal A top executive at a major Japanese publisher has been charged with bribing a former Tokyo Olympics organizing committee member. The 2023 Games will be held in Las Vegas, and the flag football game at Allegiant Stadium is Sunday, Feb. 5. The Buccaneers announced Monday night that the team will leave Tampa on Tuesday and relocate in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The Buccaneers are expected to practice at the Miami Dolphins’ training complex in Miami Gardens, Florida, starting on Wednesday and continue through this week’s preparations, if necessary. MLB – Major League Baseball Last Night Tigers, Cubs, and White Sox were off Tonight Kansas City (Greinke 4-9) at Detroit (Wentz 2-2), 6:40 p.m. WSJM/WCSY 6:20 Chicago White Sox (Lynn 7-6) at Minnesota (Ober 1-3), 7:40 p.m. Philadelphia (Wheeler 11-7) at Chicago Cubs (Stroman 4-7), 7:40 p.m. Covid/Sports – Canada won’t require masks on planes, drops vaccine mandate The Canadian government will no longer require people to wear masks on planes. Government officials also confirmed Canada is dropping the vaccine requirement for people entering the country at the end of the month. Canada, like the United States, requires foreign nationals to be vaccinated when entering the country. No change in the mandate is expected in the U.S. in the near term. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government has agreed to let a cabinet order enforcing mandatory COVID-19 vaccination requirements at the border expire Sept. 30. Transport Canada is also removing travel requirements and as of October 1 people won’t have to wear masks on trains and planes. NHL – National Hockey League – Preseason Tonight Detroit Red Wings at Pittsburgh Penguins, 7:00 p.m. St. Louis Blues at Chicago Blackhawks, 8:30 p.m. NBA – Pistons guard Cade Cunningham bulked up for 2nd NBA season Cade Cunningham packed on about 10 pounds of muscle in his first NBA offseason, hoping the added weight will help him lift his game and the Detroit Pistons to another level. The 6-foot-6 guard validated Detroit’s decision to draft him No. 1 overall last year. He averaged 17.4 points to lead all rookies, ranked second among first-year players with 5.6 assists a game and grabbed 5.5 rebounds after overcoming an ankle injury that slowed the start of his career. He and the rest of the Pistons are back for camp, eager to improve on last year’s finish. NBA – Bulls set sights higher, look to build on run to playoffs The Chicago Bulls have their sights set higher after making the playoffs for the first time since 2017. They led the Eastern Conference for a big portion of the season with DeMar DeRozan playing at an MVP level. The Bulls were knocked out in the first round by Milwaukee. Chicago returns with its core group of players intact. The Bulls will be without point guard Lonzo Ball for at least 4-6 weeks after left knee surgery. NBA – Turner heads into another season with Pacers, trade talk Indiana Pacers center Myles Turner has grown accustomed to the trade talk. He saw two-time All-Star Domantas Sabonis and Caris LeVert dealt away in February. He saw guard Malcolm Brogdon sent to Boston over the summer. So it’s no surprise to Turner that he’s at the center of trade rumors yet again as the longest-tenured Pacers player enters the final season of his contract. But Turner doesn’t seem to mind. For now, the 26-year-old still suits up for the team that drafted him and as long he stays in town, Turner intends to play winning basketball. NCAAFB – Texas Tech fined for field storming when Texas player shoved Texas Tech was fined $50,000 and reprimanded by the Big 12 Conference because fans stormed the field following an overtime victory against rival Texas. A video of the celebration shows one of those fans shoving a Longhorns player. Texas Tech posted on social media a still shot from the video asking for help in identifying that fan. Texas senior edge rusher Ovie Oghoufo was shoved from behind by one fan running onto the field Saturday after the Red Raiders won 37-34. Texas coach Steve Sarkisian says Oghoufo showed great poise and composure in what could have turned into an ugly situation. NCAAFB – Ga Tech fires Geoff Collins in 4th season with 10-28 mark Geoff Collins is out as Georgia Tech’s football coach. Collins was fired in the midst of his fourth season after failing to make headway with a brash plan to turn the Yellow Jackets into a national powerhouse through branding and promoting Atlanta’s big-city culture. Collins was dumped two days after a 27-10 loss to Central Florida left him with a record of 10-28. Collins finished his tenure with a winning percentage of just .263 — the lowest of 13 full-time coaches in the school’s history. Georgia Tech also fired athletic director Todd Stansbury. NASCAR – AP Exclusive: Jimmie Johnson to retire from full-time racing Seven-time NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson tells The Associated Press that he is retiring from full-time racing and will turn his focus toward spending time with family. He figures his future schedule will include no more than 10 bucket-list events. The 47-year-old says he has no idea what his racing schedule will look like, or whether he’ll run any IndyCar races next season. He wants to do the 24 Hours of Le Mans with NASCAR and Hendrick Motorsports, and has interest in “The Double” of the Indianapolis 500 and Coca-Cola 600 on the same day. But he also wants to travel with his family and perhaps spend a year living abroad. Cubs 5, Mets 2 – Cubs hound Bassitt, beat NL East-leading Mets 5-2 Chris Bassitt had his shortest start in three months, failing to get through the fourth inning as the NL East-leading New York Mets lost to the Chicago Cubs 5-2. The Mets had won each of Bassitt’s last eight starts, a span in which he had a 2.24 ERA. But the right-hander gave up five runs in 3 2/3 innings — his quickest exit since he lasted a season-low 3 1/3 innings against San Diego on July 8. Rafael Ortega and Zach McKinstry homered for the Cubs. The Mets stranded 10 runners — including seven over the first six innings against rookie Javier Assad, who allowed five hits in earning the first victory of his career. Tonight Houston (Brown 1-0) at Detroit (Hutchison 2-7), 6:40 p.m. WSJM/WCSY 6:20 Chicago Cubs (Sampson 1-5) at N.Y. Mets (deGrom 5-1), 7:10 p.m. Colorado (Kuhl 6-8) at Chicago White Sox (Kopech 4-9), 8:10 p.m. NFL – National Football League – Week 1 Yesterday Seattle Seahawks 17, Denver Broncos 16 Seahawks 17, Broncos 16 – Seahawks survive Wilson’s return, edge Broncos on missed FG Geno Smith threw two first-half touchdown passes, Denver fumbled twice at the 1-yard line in the second half, and the Seahawks beat the Broncos 17-16 in Russell Wilson’s return to Seattle. Brandon McManus missed a 64-yard field goal attempt with 20 seconds left and the Seahawks escaped with another wild victory involving Wilson at quarterback. Except this time Wilson was the opponent and there will be plenty of questions about Denver coach Nathaniel Hackett’s late-game clock management and decisions in his first game. Denver faced fourth-and-5 at the Seattle 46 and had three timeouts left, but the Broncos ran significant time off the clock before Hackett called timeout and decided to have McManus try the long field goal. NCAAFB – Notre Dame QB Buchner expected to miss season with injury Notre Dame quarterback Tyler Buchner is expected to miss the rest of the regular season with an injury to his nonthrowing shoulder that will need surgery. Fighting Irish coach Marcus Freeman says Buchner has a severe AC joint sprain in his left shoulder. Buchner was injured in the fourth quarter of Notre Dame’s surprising loss to Marshall on Saturday. Drew Pyne, who came off the bench after Buchner was hurt, was listed as the starter on Notre Dame’s depth chart of Saturday’s home game against California. NCAAFB – Narduzzi mum on status of injured Pitt QBs Slovis, Patti No. 23 Pittsburgh is dealing with uncertainty at quarterback as the Panthers prepare for a road trip to Western Michigan. Starter Kedon Slovis left last week’s overtime loss to Tennessee with an undisclosed injury. Backup Nick Patti injured his left leg early in the fourth quarter but had limited mobility. Head coach Pat Narduzzi offered no update on the status of either quarterback. Dartmouth transfer Derek Kyler and redshirt freshman Nate Yarnell have been competing to be third on the depth chart behind Slovis and Patti. WNBA – WNBA Playoffs – WNBA Finals (best of 5) Tonight Connecticut Sun at Las Vegas Aces, 9:00 p.m. (LV leads 1-0) WNBA – Sun beaming with confidence despite loss to Aces in Game 1 The Connecticut Sun might be down one game in the WNBA Finals after losing their first series opener of the postseason, but they haven’t lost confidence thanks to a stringent defensive effort in Game 1. The Sun did what they hoped to do in by holding the league’s No. 1 offense well below their season average. The top-seeded Las Vegas Aces averaged a league-best 90.4 points per game during the regular season and were scoring a playoff-best 92.3 per contest heading into the finals. Sunday, the Sun held Las Vegas to its lowest point total of the postseason in the 67-64 loss. Tennis – Carlos Alcaraz: 19, US Open champ, No. 1, unique Carlos Alcaraz is the U.S. Open champion and the No. 1-ranked player in men’s tennis at age 19. And he is exhausted. He tells The Associated Press on Monday that he is not quite sure how he managed to play and win so many tough and long matches in a row to earn his first Grand Slam title. He also says he considers himself a unique player who can hit a lot of different shots and never gives up on a ball. He grew up admiring Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer but is not interested in comparing himself to either. NBA – Wolves reprimand Edwards for homophobic social media remark The Minnesota Timberwolves have reprimanded star guard Anthony Edwards for homophobic comments he made on an Instagram video and later apologized for. Timberwolves president of basketball operations Tim Connelly says the team is “disappointed in the language and actions” Edwards displayed in an Instagram video. Edwards made a disparaging, profane comment about a group of men on a sidewalk he recorded from a vehicle he was inside. Edwards deleted the post and apologized for his remark. Nikola Jokic, Kevin Durant, Rajon Rondo and Kobe Bryant are among players who’ve been disciplined by the NBA in the past for anti-gay language. Soccer – US Soccer investigation into NWSL misconduct nearing end U.S. Soccer says an investigation into alleged abuse and misconduct in the National Women’s Soccer League is expected to be completed by early October. The investigation led by former acting U.S. Attorney General Sally Yates was initiated last fall after North Carolina Courage coach Paul Riley was accused of sexual harassment and coercion by two former players. Riley was fired and league Commissioner Lisa Baird stepped down in the wake of the players’ claims. U.S. Soccer and the NWSL and its players union announced separate investigations. Boston Marathon – Boston Marathon to welcome nonbinary athletes to 2023 race Nonbinary athletes will be able to run in next year’s Boston Marathon without having to register as members of the men’s or women’s divisions. Race organizers announced the change on Monday as registration opened for the 127th running of the prestigious race next April 17. The Boston Athletic Association says it’s been working to expand opportunities for nonbinary people — not just for the marathon but for the BAA’s other events. It says nonbinary athletes can submit entry applications if they’ve completed a marathon as a nonbinary participant during the current qualifying window. Races around the U.S. increasingly are adding nonbinary divisions and offering equal prize money. NASCAR – Hamlin chasing NASCAR driver’s title, owner’s championship Denny Hamlin the driver finds himself in the most enviable of positions heading into Saturday night’s race at Bristol. His second-place run at Kansas Speedway over the weekend nearly ensured his spot in the next round of the playoffs. Denny Hamlin the owner? He’s feeling even better. The car he was chasing down in the waning laps of Sunday’s race happened to be the No. 45 driven by Bubba Wallace for 23XI Racing, which is owned by Hamlin and Hall of Fame basketball star Michael Jordan. The victory pushed the team into the next round in the race for the lesser-known owner’s championship. Rodriguez lasted just one out and averaged 91.9 mph for his fastball, 2.4 mph below his season average, and left the mound with Tigers head athletic trainer Doug Teter. Drew Rasmussen allowed four hits in five shutout innings with seven strikeouts and no walks, improving to 4-0 with a 1.01 ERA in his last five starts. Royals 6, White Sox 2 – Witt homers off Giolito, Melendez connects as KC tops Chisox Bobby Witt Jr. and MJ Melendez homered and fellow rookie Emmanuel Rivera hit a go-ahead triple to lead the Kansas City Royals over the Chicago White Sox 6-2. Witt, Melendez and Rivera each had two hits. Rivera’s sinking liner escaped a diving Adam Engel for a triple that drove in Melendez with the tiebreaking run in the sixth. In his return from the COVID-19-related injured list, Giolito labored early, needing 54 pitches to complete the first two innings, allowing four hits and two walks. After Witt’s leadoff homer in the third, Giolito struck out six of the next seven batters and permitted only a pair of singles before being lifted after five innings. Pirates 3, Cubs 2 – Chicago-born rookie Suwinski homers, lifts Pirates over Cubs Rookie Jack Suwinski, who attended high school 20 minutes from Wrigley Field, hit a tiebreaking home run and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Cubs 3-2, ending Chicago’s four-game winning streak. Suwinski made his major league debut this season and began the day hitting .183 with two homers. With the score 2-all, the 23-year-old outfielder from Taft High School opened the fifth inning with a drive off Drew Smyly that barely cleared the center field wall. Michael Chavis’ single in the third snapped the Pirates’ scoreless streak of 20 innings. They scored in the eighth inning of Sunday’s 1-0 win over the Reds despite being no-hit by Hunter Greene and Art Warren, then lost 9-0 and 7-0 earlier this week at Wrigley Field. Orlando’s Franz Wagner and Houston’s Jalen Green were the other players chosen for the first team by a panel of 100 sportswriters and broadcasters. Barnes, the No. 4 pick by the Toronto Raptors, edged Mobley for the Rookie of the Year in the smallest margin under the current format that began in 2002-03. They both received 200 points in the All-Rookie balloting, along with Cunningham, the 2021 No. 1 pick. WNBA – Women’s National Basketball Association Last Night Seattle Storm 74, Chicago Sky 71 Storm 74, Sky 71 – Magbegor, Stewart power Storm to 74-71 win over Sky Ezi Magbegor scored 21 points, Breanna Stewart added 13 and the Seattle Storm beat the Chicago Sky 74-71. Candace Parker scored the final seven points in a 9-0 Chicago run to close out the game. The Sky (2-2) had the ball with 9.1 seconds left, but Allie Quigley misfired on a 22-footer on the game’s final shot. Azura Stevens led Chicago with 18 points. Parker finished with 11 points and nine rebounds. NCAAWBKB – Central Michigan’s top scorer Molly Davis transfers to Iowa All-Mid-American Conference first-team pick Molly Davis of Central Michigan is transferring to Iowa. That word from Hawkeyes coach Lisa Bluder. The 5-foot-7 guard from Midland, Michigan, was a three-year starter for the Chippewas and led the team last season with 18.6 points and 4.7 assists per game. She has scored at least 10 points in 67 games, including a career-high 33 points against Ohio in the 2021 MAC Tournament semifinals. Davis will have two season of eligibility because of the COVID-19 bonus year. NCAAFB – Raise makes Ohio State’s Day one of highest-paid coaches Ohio State plans to hike Ryan Day’s annual salary to $9.5 million as part of a two-year contract extension that will put him among the nation’s highest-paid college football coaches. Day’s raise makes him the latest coach to crack $9 million per year, putting him in company with Alabama’s Nick Saban and Clemson’s Dabo Swinney and in line with recent megadeals given to Michigan State’s Mel Tucker and LSU’s Brian Kelly. In three seasons, Day has led the Buckeyes to a 34-4 record, including 23-1 in the Big Ten. NCAAFB – Saban calls out Texas A&M for using NIL deals to buy players Alabama coach Nick Saban called out Texas A&M, saying the school was “buying” players with name, image and likeness deals. The Aggies signed the top recruiting class in the country earlier this year. While speaking at an event in Birmingham, Alabama, Saban also mention Jackson State and Miami as schools that have used NIL deals to lure players. Jackson State coach Deion Sanders responded by calling Saban’s comments about a $1 million NIL deal for a highly touted recruit a lie. Saban said Alabama players earned more than $3 million from sponsorship and endorsement deals “the right way.” CFL – CFL, players’ union make tentative labor deal, ending strike The Canadian Football League and its players’ union have reached a tentative agreement on a new labor contract, ending the second strike in CFL history. The league made the announcement Wednesday night. The contract must be ratified by both the CFL board of governors and the CFL Players’ Association. The new collective bargaining agreement comes four days after players with seven of the league’s nine teams did not show up for the start of training camp. Players with the two remaining teams would have been eligible to walk off the job Thursday. Soccer – US Soccer equalizes pay in milestone with women, men The U.S. Soccer Federation has reached milestone agreements to pay its men’s and women’s teams equally. That makes the American national governing body the first in the sport to promise both sexes completely matching compensation. The federation has announced separate collective bargaining agreements through 2028 with the unions for both national teams. The move ends years of often acrimonious negotiations. One of the main sticking points was World Cup prize money. The unions agreed to pool FIFA’s payments for the men’s World Cup this year and next year’s Women’s World Cup. It will also pool the 2026 and 2027 tournaments. Warning: This episode contains descriptions of a very gruesome crime and scene Jess and Alex catch up and talk about hanging in the backyard in the summer, new shows they've watched, and if they think Carol Baskin's husband was fed to a tiger or not. Then Jess takes Alex on a Road Trip to Williamston, MI to tell him about the 1897 gruesome crime that was committed at 320 Elevator St. In a twist, there is no question whodunit, or how they did it, it just raises a lot of questions about the state of mental health care then and now. *May is Mental Health Awareness month - Mental health matters staystrange Email us your interesting Detroit stories, story suggestions, or just to say hey: detroitstrange@gmail.com IG & Twitter: @detroitstrange Patreon: @detroitstrange And check out our Threadless shop for merch!
