On today's episode, Jason gets the party started by sharing his thoughts on Steph Curry and the absence of 'clutch moments' during his postseason career. Curry is a 2-time NBA MVP, a 3-time NBA champion and easily the greatest shooter in NBA history, and yet this narrative continues to haunt him. However, a thorough analysis of Curry's playoff career shows that the biggest reason why he's never hit a clutch shot in the playoffs is because his teams are usually well-ahead in the closing moments; How is Steph supposed to have a 'signature moment' if his teams are blowing everyone else out? Curry is clearly a victim of his own success. Later, Jason elaborates on his viral tweet from Monday night in which he explained how an NBA Finals series victory by the Boston Celtics would cement Jayson Tatum as having arguably the greatest postseason run of all-time. If the Celtics win the title, Tatum will have defeated Steph Curry, Kevin Durant, Giannis Antetokounmpo and Jimmy Butler en route to the championship. Going through the annals of NBA history, and there's probably only a handful of guys (Curry, Michael Jordan, Dirk Nowitzki) who can argue that they had a tougher path. Finally, Jason closes the show with a few quick thoughts on Aaron Donald's massive contract extension with the Los Angeles Rams. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On McKay's 50th podcast episode, he talks about the importance of staying in your lane, and opens this week by introducing the story of Sarah Blakely, the creator of SPANX.  He talks about her unhappiness as a fax machine saleswoman and her perseverance in the industry.  Only after dedicating herself to her position did she serendipitously find success in the hosiery business.  McKay notes that, although dedicating yourself to your craft in the face of unhappiness is no easy feat, giving yourself fully or staying in your lane is the most surefire method to achieve success.  He goes on to recall the story of Dirk Nowitzki, the starting center for the Dallas Mavericks.  McKay remembers the moment when Dirk turned down high offers at other teams and chose to stay with Dallas - a prime example of staying in your lane.  He didn't forego his path for the sake of money, but stayed true to his goal.  McKay concludes this episode by reminding us all that there is huge value in being loyal to others, to your calling, to your values, and that you will find you can travel faster, make more progress and feel better about who you are when you stay in your lane with confidence. The Finer Details of This Episode:  Sarah Blakely's journey to create SPANX Finding serendipitous success The importance of giving yourself fully Dirk Nowitzki's loyalty to the Dallas Mavericks Why imitation never works Why one should avoid worrying about others Focusing on yourself  Quotes:  “You see too often in life, we don't stay in our lane. We think things are better doing what someone else is doing or want to shift strategy, because things are temporarily hard or something else seems a little more inviting.” “You develop skills and meet people that can likely change the course of your life. And on it goes.” “Give your full commitment to your relationship even though things aren't perfect.” “There is depth in anything you give yourself to fully.” “Staying in your lane is more than being focused, committed, or loyal. It also means you give yourself to what you were called to do.” “Stick to your lane until the time is right to add a boat or camper, and until then, smile.” “Now I've known people who are very good at staying in their lane in life. They just have this way about them. They're not worried about other people. They're not obsessed with what other people do wrong. They're just confident and observant and patient and comfortable with who they are.” “Next time you're tempted to be nosy or out of your lane, or critical of someone else or wanting to direct their life, say to yourself, ‘I've resigned from that job.'” “Every second you spend driving someone else's car is not spent driving yours.” Links:  https://www.mckaychristensen.org/ (Open Your Eyes with McKay Christensen)

On April 26, 2021, Jonathan Tjarks tweeted: “There's no easy way to say this. I've been diagnosed with cancer. The doctors aren't entirely sure what kind it is, but they think it is one of two kinds of sarcomas. I've already begun chemotherapy. Please keep me, my wife, and our one-year-old son in your prayers.” He then wrote an article for The Ringer titled “The Long Night of the Soul” explaining where his head and heart were at as he underwent chemo. By this time, Jonathan had been an NBA writer for The Ringer for a couple of years. He began his sportswriting career working for his high school and college newspapers. After writing for a political news website, Jonathan realized he'd rather be writing about sports, and so started a basketball blog. Jonathan also contributed to Mavs Moneyball and eventually earned a press credential that helped him cover his hometown Dallas Mavericks in even greater depth. After years of taking freelance writing gigs, Jonathan's passionate and insightful stories caught the eye of editors at The Ringer, who offered him a staff writer position. As the site grew its podcasts, Jonathan started co-hosting Upside High with fellow scribe Kyle Mann. In this episode, Jonathan shares: The unorthodox story of how he found GodWhy faith and family have provided a firm foundation during his cancer treatmentHow Juwan Howard reacted when he swiped players' popcorn in the American Airlines Arena visitors' locker room Why Jason Kidd, Shawn Marion, and Tyson Chandler were perfect complements to Dirk Nowitzki on the Mavs' 2011 NBA title team Why the Mavs were actually better off after letting Steve Nash get awayWhat he sees as the future of sports journalism despite major changes due to COVIDTo keep up with Jonathan, follow him on Twitter, listen to his Upside High podcast with Kyle Mann, and read his articles for The Ringer.

#21 Freddie: Fredrick Kleemichen grew up in Bremerhaven as the son of an American father and German mother, signed his first pro-contract in 2002 with Frankfurt (Opel) Skyliners at the age of 15 and moved to a new city with new hope and big dreams. “Freddie” as we all call him, is not a household name in the world of basketball right now but he definitely used to be! He had a roller-coaster journey from being one of the highly touted prospects in Germany to moving down the latter and playing in lower divisions on Frankfurt's farm teams while the frustration was growing. He eventually cut ties with Frankfurt at an early stage of his career and despite having offers to play for other BBL clubs he decided to move to Germany's newly formed ProA (2nd division) league and this is where our paths met. After having several successful seasons with the Cuxhaven BasCats he eventually decided to leave professional basketball behind and start his studies in business in order to prepare himself for life after basketball. He is now a successful COO (Chief Operating Officer) of the agency “Belle Etage Event”. He was once hailed as ‘The Next Dirk Nowitzki' and today he told his story on my podcast. Everything he had to live through and what the thinks young prospects need in their life as a ‘next big thing'. Listen to us talk about the importance of good mentorship early on, guidance and a helping-hand during tough times. The role that Holger Geschwindner played in his career and the genuine help he provided by implementing strong values in Freddie's life. Freddie also talked about the ‘After-Life', when it didn't work out the way he hoped for, as well as the steps taken towards his new path.
