Dr. Gregg Korbon's life was rooted in science, discipline, and achievement—through medicine, military service, martial arts, and teaching. But when his son, Brian, a deeply intuitive and gifted child, died just before his tenth birthday - just as he had predicted to his parents - everything changed. Out of unimaginable loss came dreams, synchronicities, and spiritual encounters that challenged the limits of reason. In this episode, we explore the themes of his book Beyond Reason: the transformative power of grief, the role of faith and intuition, and how loss can open us to a deeper consciousness of love and connection. Dr. Korbon also shares insights for those navigating grief, bridging the worlds of science and spirituality, and carrying forward the legacies of those we love.Want to be a guest on Stories from Real Life? In S4E13 - the ARCANVM S4 finale - I sit down with with philosopher, Platonist, and content creator Eric Orwoll. Eric's work in dialogue with various collaborators has positioned him as an outstanding voice in the study of Platonism. Specifically, his work in reviewing the Iamblichean curriculum of the Platonic dialogues, Proclus' Elements of Theology, and the dissertations and essays of Thomas Taylor on the various aspects of Platonism and Neoplatonism are among what I consider to be the most important influences in my own work. Your value has been determined by the price the God of the universe has been willing to pay for you. Jesus showed us how to measure love in John 15:13 (NLT), “And here is how to measure it—the greatest love is shown when people lay down their lives for their friends.” That's exactly what Jesus did for you. When that fact is deeply anchored within you, you'll find yourself being struck with the awesome reality that you are precious to God; you are loved by God beyond reason.
When life threw its harshest curveballs at me, from health crises to the heart-wrenching loss of those closest to my heart, I found myself grappling with the very philosophies I've long championed. In this intimate sharing, I peel back the layers of my journey, revealing how the wisdom of Stoicism, Christianity, Buddhism, and Aristotelian virtue unexpectedly became my lifeline in the storm. We all encounter rough patches, but it's the principles we've woven into the fabric of our lives that hold us together when we're fraying at the edges. This episode is a testament not only to struggle but to the surprising resilience that comes with a foundation built on reason and virtue. As I look back on this tumultuous period, I dissect four potent concepts from various philosophies that fortified my perseverance. It's a deep examination into how maintaining our character and virtue in the face of adversity isn't just a lofty ideal, but a practical strategy that can illuminate our darkest days. By sharing my story, I hope to offer not just a mirror reflecting my own experiences but a window into discovering your own unyielding strength and the power of inherent goodness to radiate even when the lights go out. Join me as we ponder the importance of these philosophical tools, and how they can help us not just to endure but to emerge gracefully from the trials we face.------Live Well and Flourish website: https://www.livewellandflourish.com/ The theme music for Live Well and Flourish was written by Hazel Crossler, hazel.crossler@gmail.com. The Story of South Florida Hardcore Band THE BELIEVERSTony Downs (vocalist) and Chad Palmer (guitar) tell the story of their late 80s/early 90's hardcore band THE BELIEVERS. The Believers were out of West Palm Beach, and are one of South Florida's earliest hardcore bands. Some could argue they were the first. Tony and Chad take us through the early beginnings, the formation of the band, recording the 1987 "Half Way Home" demo cassette, recording their unreleased album at Morrisound Studios in Tampa, reminiscing about the countless shows opening for bands such as Social Distortion, Fugazi, Slapshot, DayGlo Abortions, Insted, Judge, Warzone, Bl'ast! just to name a few. They also shared the stage with a plethora of other Florida bands of the era such as Powerhouse, The Roidz, No Fraud, Beyond Reason, The Genitorturers, Slap of Reality, People's Court, Awake and FWA just to name a few. Dain Johnson (bass) was out of town and unable to be present for this episode. Adam Miller is back with a fantastic new record and we hear all about it on the Guitar Speak Podcast! In Adam's words "Beyond Reason is a Guitarist / Songwriter album, if there was such a genre! I began to take note, that most of my guitar playing time was spent writing and creating, rather than practising. This led to me writing multiple albums worth of material the past few years whilst off the road for a while.” The 8 song album contains elements of blues, jazz, funk, rock, folk, and country and features Miller on electric, archtop, acoustic, resonator, and nylon string guitar. The bass & drums were recorded in Los Angeles by Miller's now long time collaborators, drummer / engineer / producer Justin Glasco, and bass player Joel Gottschalk. Miller then worked up the tracks through 2022 in his home of Newcastle Australia, between his return to performing and touring dates. https://www.adammiller.com.au/ http://www.guitarspeakpodcast.com/e/adam-miller-gsp-80/ http://www.guitarspeakpodcast.com/e/adam-miller-us-adventures-and-a-new-record-gsp-141/ This episode is brought to you by Fretboard Biology Fretboard Biology - the online guitar college created by Joe Elliott, ex Head of Guitar at GIT and McNally Smith Music College. In this episode of Money Tales, our guest is Sanford Livingston II. Sanford is from Trenton, New Jersey, and a question he often heard from his mom while growing up was, “What are you going to study? Because you've got to get a job”. And, as Sanford explains, where he came from job stood for Just Over Broke. As a result of talking money with his college roommate, who came from a very affluent family, Sanford realized his own money orientation was focused on working and surviving rather than on living and thriving. This shift in perspective had a profound impact on Sanford and the way he approached his life going forward. He's redefined wealth and is now working on passing that along to the rising generation of his family. Sanford is currently the acting CEO of Nor-Cal FDC. He is charged with the responsibility of establishing relationships with lenders, fintech innovations experts, and political and community leaders. Sanford has overall strategic and operational responsibility for Nor-Cal FDC's staff, programs, expansion, and execution of its mission. Dan's early career included a year and a half stint drawing political cartoons for Madcap Magazine and illustrating underground projects such as Maximum Rock and Roll. In 1997, after struggling through a violent car crash and a knife fight with a crackhead that severed the tendon on his left thumb, he attended art school. Receiving some commercial and local gallery acclaim for his artwork, he moved to New York City in an attempt to kick start an art career. Heavily immersing himself in the local hardcore scene, he produced artwork for the bands Shai Hulud, Indecision, Coalesce, Locked in a Vacancy, Beyond Reason, Zombie Apocalypse , not to mention various local record labels and venues. In 2000, he started tattooing, initially working on many musician friends. A year later, in September 2001, he was stricken with brain cancer and underwent surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. Three months after the surgery, he married fellow tattoo artist Monica Castillo. After a brief trip down south, that included owning a short lived tattoo shop with the infamous Joe Truck , in a venture that ended in disaster, he returned to Manhattan. His work started appearing in both a growing number of tattoo magazines and more fine art influenced outlets such as Aphrodesia, Pint Sized Paintings, and The Tarot Project. Tattoo related books such as No Regrets: The Best, Worst, & Most #$%*ing Ridiculous Tattoos Ever , Tattoo Prodegies 1 , Tattoo Prodegies 2, and Inside the Tattoo Circus: A Journey Through the Modern World of Tattoos also took notice and included features. Tragedy struck again in 2007, as his wife of 6 years, Monica Henk, was killed in a motorcycle accident by a hit and run driver. Despite extensive coverage in the local media and vigorous campaigns by both the tattoo and motorcycle community, the culprit was never found.Sick of New York, he moved to Austin, Texas for three years, and started doing a regular comic strip entitled “Rollo & Me” for Tattoo Artist Magazine. Illustrations for Black Static Magazine, and This is Horror followed suit. His first novel, The Black Seas of Infinity, was published by Anarchy Books in 2011, and he started an illustrated calendar featuring a variety of artists. Deadite Press released the first book with a cover by Dan, a novel entitled “The Sopaths” by Piers Anthony.A limited edition chapbook “
