Welcome to Episode 103 of Tablesetters. Devin and Steve return with another in-depth journey through the world of baseball, tackling both the headlines that shake the game and the performances that define it. We begin in Detroit, where the Tigers and Ilitch Sports and Entertainment find themselves in the middle of a storm. A series of troubling misconduct allegations have emerged, involving multiple executives and former player Cameron Maybin. It is a story that extends far beyond the diamond and raises difficult questions about accountability, workplace culture, and the responsibility that professional sports organizations bear toward their employees and their communities. From there, we turn to a pair of emotional and historic chapters. Anthony Rizzo, the face of the Cubs' modern era, has officially retired from Major League Baseball and steps into a new role as a team ambassador. His legacy in Chicago is written not only in numbers but in leadership, resilience, and the unforgettable moment when he caught the final out of the 2016 World Series. We also reflect on the life of Davey Johnson, who has passed away at the age of eighty-two. Johnson was a visionary manager whose analytical approach was ahead of its time and who came closer than most to building a true dynasty with the unforgettable Mets of the nineteen eighties. On the field, the race for National League Most Valuable Player has taken center stage. Kyle Schwarber has joined the select company of sluggers with fifty home runs, while Juan Soto has etched his name into history with a rare thirty home run, thirty stolen base season. This debate captures the essence of value in today's game: is it the thunder of historic power and iconic moments, or is it the balance of all-around excellence? We will also revisit our rankings of the one-two-three MLB Jam pitching trios. From the dominance of the Dodgers with Yamamoto, Snell, and Glasnow, to Tarik Skubal's Cy Young campaign that elevates the Tigers' staff into elite territory, to the balance and depth of the Phillies and Mariners, these rotations represent the backbone of October dreams and postseason survival. The discussion continues with the Mets' recent struggles as their wild card lead shrinks and the Giants close the gap, the unsettling controversy surrounding Framber Valdez and his so-called cross-up moment, and the injuries that could shift the balance of pennant races, including the devastating absence of Bo Bichette for the Blue Jays and the double blow of Trea Turner and Alec Bohm for the Phillies. As always, we round out the episode with our signature segments. We ask “What's the Word?” to define the week's most memorable moments and we look ahead to the Arizona Fall League, where thirteen Top 100 prospects will take the stage, providing one more chance to watch the future of the game under the desert sun. All of this and much more is waiting for you in Episode 103 of Tablesetters. Follow us on Instagram and X @TablesettersPod, and join us as we set the table for another unforgettable week in the game we love.

The 30th anniversary of Cal Ripken Jr.'s 2131 record-breaking game came with a fascinating finish as the Orioles hosted the Dodgers. This among so many other takeaway and Quirkjians. We have to say goodbye to one of the game's greats, Davey Johnson. Tim Kurkjian's stories about the (should be) Hall of Fame manager will make you smile and laugh through the difficult loss for the game of baseball. Just how good has Aroldis Chapman been these last couple months? Good enough for a Cy Young, we weigh in there. Walker vs Walker created a great moment for our show. Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey joins host Adam Bittner analyze the Pirates' decision to wait until late August to promote top pitching prospect Bubba Chandler to MLB. Should GM Ben Cherington have had him here months ago, when he could have helped salvage the season for stalwarts like Paul Skenes and Mitch Keller in the rotation? Or was this team always doomed to fail because of its deficient offense? Were Chandler's struggles in the minor leagues legitimate concerns? Or a reflection of his frustration with his slow promotional route? And who are the prospects Jason would like to see next? From Nick Yorke to Hunter Barco? Our duo tackles those questions and more. Is Henry Davis starting to put things together at catcher, given the team has a winning record when he plays? Does the 2026 rotation need another veteran like Andrew Heaney? Or should the Pirates lean into homegrown options like Braxton Ashcraft? And should Skenes be a lock to win the Cy Young award at season's end?
Guests: Blue Jays starter Max Scherzer, left fielder Davis Schneider, reliever Tommy Nance The Blue Jays are getting set for a three-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers, who have the best record in MLB, and they'll go into it just half a game behind the Detroit Tigers for the best record in the American League. Bullpen questions abound, and we discuss those on this episode of Deep Left Field, and also welcome Max Scherzer to the podcast for the first time. The 41-year-old, Cooperstown-bound starting pitcher is showing glimpses of the pitcher who won three Cy Young awards every time out and we discuss his comeback from three months missed with a thumb injury. We also try to get him to compare this Jays team to the three teams he's played on that have been to the World Series, but he's not looking past his next start. Davis Schneider homered twice Wednesday night and has been red-hot in the month of August, batting .341 with an 1.123 OPS. He joins the show to talk about his turnaround and to sing the praises of his roommate, Ernie Clement, and of Joey Loperfido, who is likely to move back in with them shortly. And 34-year-old Tommy Nance, who has a 0.90 ERA out of the bullpen in 17 appearances, discusses his long and winding path to the big leagues, his flourishing in his role with the Jays and how excited he is to be part of a September pennant push for the first time in his career.

The guys continue to discuss the Patriots roster moves after yesterday's cutdown day. Andy takes a victory lap over nobody claiming any of the now former Patriots. Finally, Bill Belichick and Jordon Hudson have reportedly found their latest business venture... is it yet another Jordon power grab?

The top ranked American survives an upset bid as stars advance at the U.S. Open, a 45-year-old tennis icon continues her major return, a three-time MLB All-Star is suspended and a Cy Young candidate is sidelined, an NFC East team parts with a popular player and other moves on the NFL's roster deadline day. It's another week of Asians in Baseball, and is it just us, or is it bright in here with all these STARS?!First, Team Taiwan and Lin Chin-Tse win the Little League World Series! Saweetie, V, and Sonny throw out the first pitch (in separate games, but wouldn't that be sick if it was the same one!) And a very special listener recap from Brian Nguyen on his time at Ichiro's number retirement. Then, in position players: Anthony Volpe is still trying to get out of his slump, we've got hit streaks on hit streaks, Jahmai Jones emerges as a candidate for Team Korea, Mookie is impressed by the Grandson of the Wind, and Steven Kwan is the first player featured in MLB's new Youtube series No Easy Outs.In pitching, Mets #4 prospect Jonah Tong is called up to The Show, Shinnosuke Ogasawara gets the "diminutive Asian" treatment (he's 5' 11" and 205 lbs btw), Naomi argues a strong case for Bryan Woo winning the Cy Young, Yu Darvish holds a masterclass on the Art of Pitching, and Riley O'Brien is soaring. Finally, Ohtani continues to prove his status as the GOAT: going on an offensive tear vs. the Angels when the rest of the Dodgers can't buy a hit, taking a liner off the thigh and staying in the game, and making friends with a Padres heckler who can't help but love the guy. The guys discuss a range of topics from Cal Raleigh's historic home run season for a catcher to fantasy football with a focus on rookie running back Tank Bigsby. They also touch on Terry McLaurin's lucrative new contract with the Commanders and golfer Keegan Bradley's upcoming Ryder Cup captain's picks, including the possibility of him picking himself. The guys largely agree that the Buffalo Bills are the clear favorites to win the AFC East, while the rest of the division faces significant challenges. A major debate unfolds regarding who can dethrone the Kansas City Chiefs, with strong arguments made for the Baltimore Ravens, who have bolstered their already stout defense and added Derrick Henry to the backfield. Other teams analyzed include the Denver Broncos, with (some of the guys) saying Bo Nix is expected to have a top-tier year, They also talk about the Houston Texans, who are predicted to dominate the AFC South, and potential surprise teams like the Los Angeles Chargers. In MLB playoff talk they break down the tight wild card races in both the American and National Leagues. The crew gives their predictions for year-end awards, highlighting the AL MVP race between Aaron Judge and Cal Raleigh, Shohei Ohtani's dominance in the NL MVP conversation, and close contests for the Cy Young and Rookie of the Year awards.Punchable Face of the Week: The guys wrap up by discussing Daniil Medvedev's U.S. Open outburst, a controversial Yankees draft pick, and a look ahead to the massive opening weekend of college football, featuring matchups like Texas at Ohio State and LSU at Clemson. RUNDOWN Nugget ice machines, clinking noises, and bizarre celebrity rumors (yes, even LeAnn Rimes' teeth). The warm-up turns nostalgic as the show celebrates musical birthdays for Billy Ray Cyrus, Gene Simmons, and Elvis Costello. And what about the chaos of late August sports: college football's return, the NFL looming, and the Mariners somehow both collapsing and contending at the same time? Hotshot recounts the fantasy football fiasco that ended his playing days back in 2007, while Mitch embraces his role as a “passionate pessimist” when it comes to Seattle baseball. And through it all, one bright spot remains—Brian Woo quietly posting Cy Young–level consistency, even if the voters never notice. Mitch interviews Nancy King, who was just 16 when a family trip to Seattle in August 1964 turned into the story of a lifetime. From checking into the Beatles' hotel, to a chance encounter with a Liverpool journalist, to being ushered into a private room where she spent 30 unforgettable minutes with John, Paul, George, and Ringo — Nancy recounts how one magical evening reshaped her life and inspired decades of storytelling. CBS analyst and Rose Bowl–winning coach Rick Neuheisel joins Mitch to open another season of weekly college football chats, breaking down the new 12-team playoff format, the looming SEC and Big Ten power plays, and the frenzy around Arch Manning's Texas debut in Columbus. He weighs in on Washington's year-two outlook under Jedd Fisch, Heisman dark horses, and makes his first official “Rick's Pick” of 2025 — with Oregon and LSU circled for January glory. Mitch welcomes back Joe Doyle and Brady Farkas for episode 348 of this Mariners No-Table segment, where the trio dissects Seattle's uneven road trip, a roster struggling against lefties, and what Cal Raleigh's historic home run pace means for the franchise. With Padres, Guardians, and Rays looming, the group debates roster moves, Harry Ford's September call-up chances, and whether the Mariners are missing their moment to bury Houston. Munaf Manji and Griffin Warner talk MLB betting for Friday. The MLB Friday betting preview with Munaf Manji and Griffin Warner broke down twelve games with both hosts riding an 8–2 streak on best bets. Munaf opened by stressing the urgency with roughly 35 games left, while Griffin noted, “we're getting hot at the right time of year.” Colorado at Pittsburgh led the card. Antonio Senzatela, torched in a 17–16 loss the last time he saw the Pirates, carries a 2–8 road record. Munaf called the over 8.5 the best angle. Griffin, mocking the Rockies as “one of the least competitive franchises in global sports,” leaned Pirates at home but doubted unders due to Colorado bats. Washington at Philadelphia followed with Cade Cavalli against Taijuan Walker. Cavalli threw seven shutout innings versus the Phillies previously, but Munaf warned that rematches favor the hitters. Griffin advised focusing on Phillies run lines and blowout props. The Red Sox at Yankees matchup paired Brayan Bello with Max Fried. Griffin argued the line “doesn't respect what Bello has done,” while Munaf highlighted Boston's 6–1 record in Bello's last seven against New York. Fried has allowed four or more runs in four of his last five. Both favored Boston plus money. Houston at Baltimore featured Lance McCullers in his first start since July 19 against Cade Povich. Griffin pointed to Houston's offensive slump of just eight runs in seven games. Munaf doubted McCullers' sharpness and leaned over nine, adding that Adley Rutschman is sidelined and Josh Hader likely out until October. In Detroit, Ryan Bergen faced Casey Mize. Munaf cited Mize's 3.63 ERA and 103 strikeouts, with Detroit winning his last four starts. Griffin criticized Mize's All-Star nod and praised Bobby Witt Jr. and Salvador Perez. Both leaned under early but saw Royals value. The Mets at Braves matchup showcased rookie Nolan McLean, who struck out eight but walked four in his debut. Griffin favored Atlanta as a home dog and the over 8.5, while Munaf leaned similarly, noting hot Atlanta weather would boost scoring. St. Louis at Tampa Bay featured Miles Mikolas against Adrian Houser. Griffin trusted the Rays' bullpen, while Munaf stressed Mikolas' inconsistency and backed Tampa at -128. Minnesota at Chicago pitted Zebby Matthews against Aaron Civale. Griffin quickly said, “give me the White Sox.” Munaf agreed, citing Matthews' 5.06 ERA and Chicago's 7–3 record at home on Friday nights, all as underdogs. In Texas, Slade Cecconi met Nathan Eovaldi. Griffin praised Eovaldi's Cy Young-level form, recommending under plays. Munaf backed that, noting Rangers home unders sit at 64.5 percent. Milwaukee hosting San Francisco saw Carson Whisenhunt oppose José Quintana. Griffin highlighted Bryce Turang's surge, while Munaf cited Milwaukee's 42–20 home record and San Francisco's 13–22 mark against lefties, backing Brewers run line at plus money. Cincinnati at Arizona matched Zach Littell with Ryne Nelson. Munaf praised Nelson's 5–1, 2.20 ERA home mark across 57 innings, backing the Diamondbacks and their team total. Griffin agreed Arizona held value despite a high price. The Dodgers at Padres closed the slate with Blake Snell against Yu Darvish. Griffin trusted Darvish's improvement and liked San Diego as a home underdog. Munaf leaned to the under eight, noting Snell's six scoreless innings against the Padres last week but citing Darvish's 2.55 career ERA in 16 appearances versus Los Angeles. Best bets closed the show. Griffin picked Tampa Bay over St. Louis, while Munaf selected the over in Houston and Baltimore, both looking to extend their winning streak into the weekend. In this episode of Two Strike Noise, Jeff and Mark open in the Jesus Montero Studio, where an ice cream sandwich has never been more dangerous. From there, the guys dig into a card-collecting dad-and-son duo who cornered the market on Greg Briley, a record-shattering Hall of Fame induction program, and John Kruk's musings on clocks, vegans, and sandwiches. They check in on the Little League World Series, where one Canadian kid has already labeled Juan Soto “overrated,” and highlight professional sluggers who quietly joined the 500-home run club outside MLB. Plus, anniversaries and debuts galore: Nolan Ryan's 5,000th strikeout, Carmelo Martinez's fly-ball “weakness,” Big Mac's towel-wrapped sitcom cameo, and Dustin Pedroia's Hall of Very Good candidacy. The main feature this week is Mark's deep dive into Mike Marshall — not the Dodgers first baseman, but the 1974 Cy Young–winning reliever whose 106 appearances, 208 innings, and obsession with kinesiology made him one of baseball's most fascinating arms. And as always, we wrap with another round of Wax Pack Heroes — where mullets, mustaches, and manager cards all come into play. 00:00 Introduction and Studio Banter 03:17 Baseball Card Collecting Adventures 06:00 Historic Baseball Memorabilia 08:16 John Kruk's Hilarious Commentary 10:00 Little League World Series Highlights 11:51 500+ Home Run Club 15:58 Baseball Debuts and Nostalgia 21:05 Mike Marshall: The Iron Man Reliever 32:46 Wax Pack Heroes Game 48:35 Final Thoughts and Outro YouTube - www.youtube.com/@twostrikenoise Twitch - https://www.twitch.tv/twostrikenoise Bluesky - @twostrikenoise.bsky.social Facebook -https://www.facebook.com/TwoStrikeNoise/ Instagram - @twostrikenoise E-mail - twostrikenoise@gmail.com We pull ALOT of commons in Wax Pack Heroes. While rehabbing from a fractured rib, Cy Young winning pitcher Chris Sale joins the show to hang out with Jeff, Britt, and Brad and talk a little baseball, youth sports, and parenting. We've talked many times about how kids may be late bloomers in sports and Chris is a great example of that. Throughout youth and high school, no one expected Chris to be a big leaguer, though he loved baseball, as well as other sports, and had great support from his parents and coaches. As a skinny left-hander, Chris topped out around 87-88 mph in high school and didn't land a Division 1 scholarship. Instead, Chris pitched at Florida Gulf Coast University, where he had an average first two years. The summer before his junior year was a pivotal time for Chris and he shares all about what happened that led to his prolific big-league career. Chris also talks about arm care for young pitchers, when to begin throwing curveballs, his sports-parenting approach with his three boys, and much more. Plenty of great insights from Chris for kids, parents, and coaches.
RUNDOWN Not a roast but a convo about Taylor Swift's appearance with the Kelce brothers. Maybe some Kylie vs. Taylor banter, and Billy Joel's new documentary. Mitch and Hotshot run through notable August 18th birthdays and remembrances before spotlighting historic sports moments—from George Brett's chase for .400 to Earl Campbell's retirement and Rich Beem's upset of Tiger Woods. Then a little Beatles-in-Seattle tour lore. From there, the show jumps into Ed Sullivan's power to launch music careers, including the Commodores' near-miss. The Mariners' playoff push and the Seahawks' preseason promise. Mitch praises the offensive line and Sam Darnold's sharp play, while Hotshot keeps him grounded with the refrain: “It's the preseason.” The duo even dream on a Trey Hendrickson trade. The Mariners No-Table crew dives into a tough 2–4 stretch against Baltimore and New York, citing both rotation struggles and lineup issues, while finding optimism in Bryce Miller's return and Brian Wu's consistency. Gino Suarez's slump and playoff rotation questions loom large, as bold predictions fly for the Phillies and A's series. Brady Henderson of ESPN joins to break down Uchenna Nwosu's return, the unlikely Hendrickson trade scenario, Jake Bobo's breakout, and Clint Kubiak's offensive reboot. He also highlights Zach Charbonnet's growing role, Sam Darnold's fit in the new scheme, and the roster battles heating up ahead of Week 1. KJ-Aren'ts—Mitch and Jason Puckett banter over podcast quirks, golf habits, chowder debates in the heat, and family traditions. The conversation winds into nostalgic territory with Christmas memories and video game firsts, from Pong to Nintendo.
