Today we talk to Mike about his experience to becoming a US Citizen much later in life than typical adoptees. Unbeknownst to him, he lived most of his life as an illegal alien in the States. Through some typical processes in life, he found out that he was not a legal citizen and his citizenship was never processed. His journey is unlike any we have heard before, and we didn't realize how common this issue actually is. Mike has gone through so much with lawyers, the possibility of being deported, and the emotional trauma of his adoption being brought back to the surface. Since we have known Mike, we have seen the emotional process he has been through, as well how long the process to become a citizen has taken. Luckily, as of April 28, 2022, Mike is a legal citizen of the United States! Thank you all for your support and for listening! We're BACK!! It's been a minute, but we're not done educating the world on all that adoptees go through. Today's episode we will be discussing "Coming out of the Fog." This is a common phenomenon adoptees go through when discovering their identity at some point in their life. It's an incredibly valuable moment for adoptees, and we believe that this time comes in a variety of times and ways. We will be referring to the book "Primal Wound" which is commonly described as the Adoptee Bible. (This is definitely a must-read for any other adoptees, it's been incredibly beneficial!) They have been featured on Upworthy, Washington Post, and The Kelly Clarkson Show-- to name a few! This is our first adoptive couple we've had a chance to interview, and it was such an honor to do so with them just a few days before Mackenzie's adoption was finalized on June 8th, 2020. Today we discussed their journey with finding adoption, the story that made their story famous, Resa & Erika's point of view as adoptees, and any hopes/concerns/thoughts for the future as Mackenzie grows up. This episode is dedicated to Mackenzie, and we truly hope to be a constant support for her growing up as she navigates every aspect of being an adoptee. Dustin & Caren, we will be here every step of the way. Thank you so much for letting us into your lives. We had such a great time talking with our friend Ellie. She was one of our coworkers that made us a department where adoptees were no longer the severe minority! (A small victory for us.) Ellie's story began in the south, and she has made her way up to Minnesota. Her story is very non-traditional, and we learned about how her family evolved through hardship and she was adopted through what initially was called "a managing conservatorship." Next week we talk to her husband about his traditional adoption, and what that's meant for their relationship.Support Colombian Influence by donating to their Tip Jar: https://tips.pinecast.com/jar/colombian-influenceFind out more at https://colombian-influence.pinecast.coThis podcast is powered by Pinecast.
