Ashley is an adoptee, birth mother, and an adoptive parent. After going through foster care and being adopted by a Baptist family at the age of 4, she saw a lot of trauma in many forms. She was surrounded by adoptees and always knew adoption was special, so when she found out she was pregnant, she knew that adoption was the only answer. While there was plenty of drama that 9 months, she was able to choose a great family and was comfortable with her decision. She says that most of her memories have faded with time due to mental trauma. Ashley went through postpartum depression and the darkest moments of her life and lost herself for a few years. Then, 11 years after she gave her child up for adoption, she was offered the opportunity to adopt her child back. Ashley adopted her son back on June 21, 2024. The most beautiful day in her family's history book. How do we live life fully alive? For Sandhya Oaks, living fully alive entails being courageous enough to go to places of brokenness and shame, so we might find healing. While trauma or hurt stunts our capacity for fullness of life, healing leads to an increased ability to love and live abundantly.Sandhya Oaks is a Ministry Leader, Spiritual Director, leads Kintsugi workshops, and does Story Work. Born in India and adopted as a Transracial Adoptee in the Midwest, Sandhya now walks with others through identity reclamation and creating experiences that restore shalom within the human heart. She is the Co-Founder of The Adoption Triad, a group that provides community and resources to those connected to Adoption and Foster Care. Sandhya holds two Certificates in Narrative Focused Trauma Care from The Allender Center and a Certificate in Resilient Leadership from the Seattle School of Theology and Psychology. Additionally, she recently completed her Trauma Care Group Training Certificate through The Art of Living Counseling Center. In today's episode, I talk with Sandhya about the power and freedom that can come from finding healing in our own stories, how she stays grounded in God's goodness and beauty amidst life's brokenness, and how she's come to see beauty in unexpected places. Sometimes finding beauty in a broken world can be feel like grueling work. I'm so grateful for brave leaders like Sandhya Oaks, who graciously show us the way forward.

Please join me as I speak with Oregon adoptee Christine Dechert. Christine participated in the advocacy movement that resulted in Oregon becoming one of only ten states in the US to have truly unrestricted access for adoptees to their original birth certificates. Christines family history is complex, as her mother was also adopted. While Oregons laws now allow adoptees to receive OBCs, the state of Montana, where Christines mother was born does not allow unrestricted access to adoptee documents. Mentioned in the podcast: Oregon and Montana adoptee access to records laws: for a good review of the laws, visit adopteerightslaw.com. Adoption Triad: a term used to represent the three aspects of adoption; the families of origin, the adoptee and the adoptive parents. Reactive Attachment Disorder(RAD)* Reactive Attachment Disorder is defined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders as a condition characterized by "grossly abnormal attachment behaviors in early childhood, occurring in the context of grossly inadequate child care. There are many ways that the attachment issues can be expressed. The disorders diagnosis is pretty controversial when applied to adoptees. *This is just my opinion, but I believe it is often used to invalidate the trauma inherent in relinquishment by making the adoptee the "identified patient" and allow adoptive parents and our culture to avoid identifying the problems caused by erasing a persons identity and ignoring their grief. I believe that any time we hear the label of RAD being used to describe an adopted person, by non-adopted and non-adoption trauma informed individuals, we should immediately treat that label as highly suspicious.

She is also the founder of the Nine Shapes Project which aims to bring more curious conversations around the Enneagram to the world.  She is such a great example of how we can easily mistype through a one-time, online test. About a year after taking an Enneagram online test she began a more thorough study, going a little deeper, reading more thorough descriptions of the types. When she read the description of her true type (type 4) she literally began crying. "I felt known", she said.  Her then boyfriend (now husband) identified as a type 5. Ashlee realized and said, "the Enneagram put language around these two temperaments in relationship." Ashlee shares how the idea for Nine Shapes came to be and how the cliché art associated with Enneagram types lead her to realize that those typical symbols are within all of us. We all cry - which might be associated with a type 4. We all like to win - not just type 3. Everyone likes to have fun - not just the type 7! So she and friend, Leah Lavelle created the beautiful shapes which lead to the idea for the Conversational Card called "Nine Shapes".  Finally, Ashlee shares her work with "The Adoption Triad" with the non-profit, Kindred and Company which create adoption books and create safe spaces for the adoption triad which is comprised of the birth mom, the adoptee, and the adoptive parent. This episode is gonna give you all the feels friends, so brew yourself a cup of coffee, sit back, and enjoy. Unless you are driving. Then stay focused and alert, but still enjoy this episode. Jeremy was on the podcast on Episode 47: Interview with a Sharp Adoptee and Foster Dad  back in March of this year. He mentioned that he had been gifted with an Ancestry.com gift from his wife, and he wanted to see if he had any siblings out there. WELP. He got what he was looking for. And he also got something he wasn't looking for - HIS BIO DAD!!! We hope that you enjoy this episode. We know that not every adoption story has this outcome, and it can be devastating. We don't want to be insensitive to that. But we do want to celebrate with Jeremy who was able to be reunited with his birth dad - Papa Jeff.  We also want to always be respectful of our guests, so we didn't ask a ton of questions in this interview. We wanted to let Jeremy and Jeff tell their story! (Even though we did try to lay copyright claims on it so we could turn it into a Hallmark Christmas movie!) But major kudos to every single member of Jeff and Jeremy's families for all the major changes they faced this year! The Adoption Triad is something that is SO important in helping Adoptees to feel supported, and that is comprised of the Adoptee, their bio family, and their adoptive family. Jeremy's entire family has just been such a beautiful example of what it looks like to lovingly embrace every new member of Jeremy's family. This takes so much humility and self-control, and we commend everyone who works hard to make the Adoption Triad work well for the sake of their child! A little more on Jeremy: he is a good friend of ours. He is married to Grace, who was a guest on our podcast, on episode 45. Together they have 2 boys, and a little foster daughter. Jeremy works at Stewardship, the company that handles all of our insurance, mortgages, financial stuff! We were once guests on his podcast, The Defining Stewardship Podcast. We highly recommend Stewardship for any and every service they provide! The Good Word of the Day: “For the revelation (vision) awaits an appointed time;     it speaks of the end     and will not prove false. Though it linger, wait for it;     it will certainly come     and will not delay.” -Habakkuk 2:3 This was actually Jeremy's verse that he shared back in March, and it's even more BEAUTIFUL in light of all that has happened this year!
