I've spent the last 30 years creating experiences in music and video gaming and I sincerely hope hearing the names bring back memories of great experiences you have had at one of my events or shows. The early 90's were very busy for me. After moving to Portland from Southern California, I was a new father, I was working on my second club called the Push and also my new band Sometime Sunday. This episode I talk about that and the influence of people like Shayde Bridges, Todd Fadel of Sappo, Billy Power from Blenderhead, Andy Prickett of the Prayer Chain and Brandon Ebel from Tooth and Nail records. My musical world was about to come full circle as I would go from being a superfan to touring, recording and playing with some of my musical heroes.
On a trail overblazen by wannabe Bourdain disciples, myself among them, with our YouTube cultural explorations and influencers with master classes on travel, food and how to make a feature movie for $500, I wonder if there is anything to be heard in my story. There's a lot to say mind you. I just wonder if there is anything to be heard. I'll let you decide. This is a podcast about my life and the people I have met along the way. It has been quite an adventure. And now for the next part. I hope you’ll check out my latest project in development and take the journey with me. Grab your whiskey and cigars...we're out on Ed's and Amanda's patio in Southeast. We get deep into the beginnings of the Portland alternative music scene in the early 90's and talk to the people that were part of making that happen and how they all came together. 9 people. 32 bands. A half dozen Record Labels.Early 90's music history as it happened to us in Portland Oregon. The voices you are hearing are….Marc Gilson - Drums - Gecko Monks, Either/OrRon Thomas - Vocals, Bass, Guitar - Gecko Monks, Oedipus Complex, Empty Tomb, Waterhouse/Yonder Hill (The Clergy)Bobby Sable aka Jean Pierre - Drums - Permanent Houseguest, Yum Yum Children, Sometime Sunday, Tragedy AnnBenjy Rickard - Bass - Guitar - Less Than Civilized, Gifty, Piqqadown, Sappo, Stereo Crush, Boy Eats Drum MachineBradley Swanson - Bass, Vocals, Guitar - Quill, Pep Squad, Motormouth, The CompanyBryan Everett - Vocals, Guitar, Bass, Drums, Keyboards - Evil Twin Brother, Inchwater, Pep Squad, The Denominators, Motormouth, The CompanyErin Brockway Collins - Vocals - Elisha’s Bones, Naive, Gifty, The Company, The DickensTodd Fadel - Vocals, Piano, Guitar, Bass, Drums, lyre, lute and anything else he puts his hands on. Haha. We were in a Star Wars tribute band called ‘Twin Sister’ formerly ‘Boba Fett’ and we opened The Push, The Turbocat Lounge and started Tom Festival together. He wrote two songs for my band Tragedy Ann.Erin Collins and I were in a band called the Dickens. Our record was called Target 60 mins because that was the kind of blank tapes we used to duplicate our recordings on. She was the office manager and organizational superhero for many years for all of our shows and festivals.Roy Fisher was instrumental from my first band and club to the last things I did in Oregon, he played a role in almost every single thing I did there. I could not have done it without him.All of these bands and more can be found on the web at The Corral on Spin Cycle on Bandcamp. A counterculture musical museum curated by Brad Swanson and Erin Collins. The Corral and Spin Cycle were two music venues in the NW that we all played frequently. It's an absolutely fantastic collection of music, album art and liner notes from our expansive family of bands. It is all things 90's and beyond from the Northwest. Brad has taken the time to find, scan, digitize, upload and in some cases even remaster everything you see. The site is donation based. It's free but if you have a few bucks please donate. It helps Brad and Erin continue. Search 'The Corral on Spin Cycle' and enjoy. Thanks so much Brad and Erin!Cheers from Southern California!
Field trip!I’m taking you with me to "a wretched hive of scum and villainy" to talk to some scum and villains! I put together a get together of just a few of my friends from the beginnings of the Portland underground scene. Let's call them “influencers'' from a day before social media. In part one of four of the conversation, I talk to my band mates from my first band in Portland in the early 90's. Singer Ron Thomas and drummer Marc Gilson. I talk to them about their history in the making of a new subculture.First we go to Maserati's grave site! Why? I don't know. Just wanted to take you with me. The voices you are hearing are…. Running a club was fantastic but I needed to find a band and get back on stage!! The new alternative scene in Portland was growing pretty rapidly but I had no idea that the dam was about to break. In more ways than one.....
Field trip! Wear headphones if you want the whole experience. My new editing skills leave something to be desired but...I did it! I know there’s a way to take this hum out...hmmmm. I wanted to take you to a show with me. The 18 year old in me just peed a little. Please check out my other episodes at mikeebridges.com Cheers from Southern California
Some rants and rabbit trails about rain, boobs, the hair salons in North Portland and peeing into reservoirs. Stuff from the trash bin.
I had just arrived in Oregon and after burying a Llama I attempted to open a Christian music club just where you'd expect one. On a street known for drugs, prostitutes and sweet smelling Asian sauce, upstairs from a marijuana head shop with an undiscovered flooring issue. Perfect.
I moved to Oregon when I was 20 for what would be the beginning of a lifetime of creating concerts, live music clubs, festivals and bands. You could have never convinced me as I found myself moving from palm trees and sunshine to a small, tree lined farm out in the middle of nowhere. My only real possession, my black Kramer bass with white plumbing tape on the edges. And then...rain....and more rain....and then it really started to rain...Ugh....http://www.mikeebridges.com
I didn't fit anywhere in 1985 high school. Nerds and geeks were cooler than me. I was something else entirely. I was a Christian youth group kid. But that's not all...I wanted to be in a kick ass rock band. Not good.Back then I got my first taste of both being in a band and promoting a show for others to come to. From then on it would be a drug to me. I would also get my first experience in being at odds with Christians and Church which would prove to be very motivating for me in the future. After high school I watched my dreams of being a rockstar dashed to pieces. So I loaded up my truck from my beloved southern California and headed to what might as well have been another planet......Portland, Oregon.
I’m going to give a quick overview and timeline of the things I've done in the last 30 years and explain where I'm headed with this podcast. I sincerely hope that you have had a great experience at one of my concerts or events. Tom Fest, Sometime Sunday, The Push, Tragedy Ann, Twin Sister, Gamechurch, Alpine, The Connection, The Armory, Epic, Spin Cycle, The Loft, Star Went Nova, Gecko Monks and a few more ;). In the near future I will do some interviews, video and get into a few of my favorite topics. For now I hope you'll check out this introduction to my podcast. Cheers from Southern California!
