In this episode we discuss the age old feud of car vs. pedestrian, Maddy's family business, pulling your tongue muscle from sedentary lifestyle, the apple juice clip that rocked the nation, an explosive edition of POW, when you bundle an uber eats, Liv's bout of mania pursuing her P.I license, being a sleepy teen, Loretta Cancun, nature versus nurture when it comes to being a P.I, thermos lunches, the stank of fridge air infusing into food, when you try to fix a curl, and SO MUCH MORE!!!
The Dandy Warhols formed in Portland, Oregon in 1994, born from the city's gritty alternative scene. Fronted by the charismatic and sardonic Courtney Taylor-Taylor, the band initially carved out a niche with a sound that merged psychedelic rock, shoegaze textures, and garage grit. Their name, a clever play on pop artist Andy Warhol, reflected their art-house attitude and offbeat sensibility right from the start. The band's 1995 debut Dandys Rule OK was released on the indie label Tim/Kerr Records and earned them a deal with Capitol Records. It wasn't until their third album, Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia (2000), that they broke through internationally—led by the iconic single “Bohemian Like You.” The song's catchy riff and slacker spirit captured a moment, helped along by a high-profile feature in a Vodafone ad, which made it an anthem of early-2000s alt culture.Known as much for their aesthetic and attitude as their music, The Dandy Warhols often played with the line between satire and sincerity. Their early 2000s feud/friendship with Brian Jonestown Massacre—documented in the acclaimed film Dig!—added to their mythos, painting them as the more commercially savvy counterparts in a tale of two brilliant but volatile bands.Despite ups and downs with labels and shifting public tastes, the Dandys have remained prolific. Their sound evolved over time, incorporating synth-pop, glam, and even industrial influences, while keeping that core fuzzed-out irreverence intact. Albums like Welcome to the Monkey House (2003) and Distortland (2016) showed their willingness to shift gears while poking fun at pop culture and themselves.Still active today, The Dandy Warhols continue to tour and release new material, including 2024's “Rockmaker”—a return to heavy grooves and wry commentary. Whether you're revisiting their hits or diving into deeper cuts, the Dandys remain a band that defies easy categorization, staying true to their motto: “It's not about being famous, it's about being cool.”Official Links:

When you have known someone for an extended period-of-time; it seems reasonable to assume that there are generally no (or very few) secrets between either party. Defining what is a secret vs what is something you just didn't know about the other person becomes the more interesting part of this dynamic. The ‘Boyz' have known each other for going on 3 score and 4 years now. And during that incredibly long period time, dem Boyz have had few if any secrets between them. But you never stop learning about someone so long as you keep the relationship important and keep in communication and dem Boyz have certainly done that. The more important question to ask someone is not “do you have any secrets”. Its “ can you keep a secret”? Now that is where the rubber meets the road. And this is where we learned something about Vince in this episode. Truth be told. Vince can definitely keep a secret. How would one know? Cuz he said so. So here comes “It's no secret” The 21st recorded conversational collaboration between dem Hamlin Avenue Boyz. Text us, and Rock on!What do coffee shop workers and rock stars have in common? Quite a bit, as it turns out! Join us for a fascinating exploration of a nostalgic ride with the Dandy Warhols and their iconic album "Come Down," blending the eclectic sounds of psychedelia and Britpop with tales from their Portland coffee house roots.Prepare for whimsy and humor as we dissect the lyrical brilliance and peculiar undertones of the Dandy Warhols' tracks. You'll get playful commentary on the delightful absurdity of Christian rock with the tongue-in-cheek track "Hard On For Jesus." The conversation meanders through intriguing musical landscapes, drawing comparisons to icons like Neil Young and Brian Eno, and examining the ambient qualities of lesser-known tracks that deserve their moment in the spotlight. Our episode crescendos with a lively discussion about our favorite songs from "Come Down," spotlighting the infectious energy of "Every Day Should Be a Holiday" with its uplifting vibes and new wave influences. We celebrate the emotional highs of "Whipping Tree" and the concert-like fervor of "Boys Better," sharing our personal song rankings in a friendly banter that pays homage to the band's creative genius. And because no trip to Portland is complete without a quirky reference, we can't help but nod to "Portlandia" with its charmingly odd "put a bird on it" mantra. Whether you're a coffee aficionado, music lover, or just along for the ride, this episode promises laughter, nostalgia, and a hearty appreciation for the art of sound and brew.Support the show

PART 1 of a 2-part BEST OF compilation of Karl Pilkington's ROCKBUSTERS (a cheap knockoff of Blockbusters) from the Xfm Ricky Gervais Show with Stephen Merchant. Not only was this one of Karl's longest running features (along with Monkey News), but it was also voted by fans as his greatest XFM feature of all time. Karl Pilkington gives a cryptic clue (it's usually nonsense) and the initials of a famous band or artist (he sometimes gets the initials wrong), and listeners either call, or as the feature developed (unless they were experiencing technical difficulties), email in their answers. The winner gets an arbitrary assortment of tat, often including a pointless DVD seemingly chosen at random from the bargain bucket. This 2-part BEST OF ROCKBUSTERS Compilation is based on the comprehensive 6-part ROCKBUSTERS compilation of every Rockbuster segment from the Xfm Ricky Gervais Show (released previously). In 2004, a rock doco came out that was pure chaos. Dig! captured 7 years in the life of The Dandy Warhols and Brian Jonestown Massacre as they tried to break it big. Made by a young first-time filmmaker called Ondi Timoner and her brother David, it's a wild story about growing up, art vs commerce, friendship and bust ups. 20 years later it's been re-cut as Dig! XX, with over 40 minutes of never-before-seen footage, and shown for the first time in Australia at the Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF). I jumped at the chance to get Director Ondi Timoner into the studio to Take 5. Because Ondi has stories. Dig in, and revel in this curious, creative mind.New Order - 'Temptation'The Manish Boys - 'Take My Tip'Bob Marley & The Wailers - 'High Tide Or Low Tide'Max Richter - 'Prelude 2'The Waterboys - 'Fisherman's Blues'If you enjoyed Max Richter's 'Prelude 2' check out his Take 5 here.
"Reverb & Seduction" The Portland outfit Federale have been one of the most fascinating and inventive bands of the last twenty years. Led by Collin Hegna, Federale have put out a handful of albums whose affecting instrumental cinemascapes, dark country ballads and psych rock excursions bring to mind a version of and the Dirty Three had they hailed from the verdant and moody Pacific Northwest. The band's new album and sixth overall, Reverb & Seduction is an ambitious and wicked blend of dusty pedal steel, high desert reverb and ominous strings that all add up to a deliciously dark and foreboding feeling that something's going to happen and not only is not going to be good, there's nothing you can do to stop it. With a lineup that boasts members of The Shivas, Roselit Bone, Dandy Warhols, and Rogue Wave, plus a guest appearance by Alex Maas of The Black Angels, Reverb & Seduction is one of the year's very best. As for Hegna, he's a busy fellow--not only does he front Federale, he's been in the Brian Jonestown Massacre for the past two decades, which also makes him the longest serving member of that band, he's a recording engineer and owner of Revolver Studios in Portland where he's produced records by everyone from Roselit Bone to David J. www.collinghegna.com www.federalemusic.bandcamp.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.bombshellradio.com (http://www.bombshellradiocom) www.alexgreenbooks.com (http://www.alexgreenbooks.com) Twitter: @emberseditor IG; @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

[originally published on Patreon Dec 7, 2021] Today's episode is nuts. I don't hear anyone referring to Salinger as a spy, and yet he was very much a spy. He served in the army's counterintelligence corps where, as it turns out, he saw some remarkable and horrific things. Then possibly got brainwashed by Nazis? I'm legitimately not joking; he was at least in the position to be brainwashed. After that, he married a Nazi spy and brought her to the US. I discuss his spiritual dilettantism, and then I go over the Joyce Maynard affair, pulling out a few very curious details that rarely get addressed. Then of course I talk about the curious role the Catcher in the Rye has played in various assassinations, and what might be in the novel that would catch the eye of an assassin. To wrap it up, I discuss the possibility that the novel contains Freemasonic themes and messages. Songs: "Catcher in the Rye" - Dandy Warhols "fais moi mal Johnny" - Boris Vian "Catcher in the Rye" - GRANT "Everything is Gonna Be Alright" - John Hinckley Jr.
The iconic 1980s mockumentary “This Is Spinal Tap” follows a fictional British band as their first North American tour slowly – and hilariously – falls apart. The movie serves as inspiration for the “Too Much Effing Perspective” podcast, hosted by Portlander Alex Hofmann and LA-based Allen Keller. Hofmann and Keller kick off conversations by asking guests about their “Spinal Tap” moments — situations where everything that could go wrong, did. The podcast has featured several Northwest artists since it launched in 2021, including Sleater-Kinney, the Dandy Warhols and Nancy Wilson from Heart. Hofmann and show producer Gretchen Kilby join us in the studio to talk about the best stories guests have shared, as well as their own “Spinal Tap” moments.

The Dandy Warhols have been around for 30 years. That can't be right! In the 90s they seemed like hedonistic little hippies and now, they still are, but the rest of the world has caught up with them. On the 15th, the band releases ROCKMAKER, their first fully guitar-driven album in a while (maybe ever) and they embark on a US tour this week. Zia McCabe joins us to talk about the new album, how the band writes songs (fans know their albums are gloriously all over the place), what it's like having David Bowie, Duran Duran, Slash and other huge names as supporters, her proud stance as a nudist, and a ton more. The Dandies have projected and lived by their life philosophy since day one. In a world where so many things change, it's nice to know you can rely on their version of unpredictability. Enjoy! www.dandywarhols.com www.patreon.com/thehustlepod

Austin Texas quartet GENTLEMEN ROGUES celebrate aggressive guitar pop anthems — bearing the influences of The Replacements, Superdrag, Jawbreaker, and similar visionaries — and have been gaining momentum and increased attention. Since their debut in 2011, the band — Danny Dunlap (guitar/vocals), Josh Power (drums), John Christoffel (guitar), and Dave Hawkins (bass, vocals) — have honed their hooks over numerous singles, EPs, and the 2022 full-length collection, A History of Fatalism. Springsteen sideman Steven van Zandt hand-picked their single “Do the Resurrection!” as the “Coolest Song in the World” on his SiriusXM radio show, Little Steven's Underground Garage. Garnering heavy airplay, listeners worldwide agreed, voting “Do the Resurrection!” as one of the top ten “Coolest Songs of 2021.” Gentlemen Rogues have supported diverse acts like the Lemonheads, Smoking Popes, the Dandy Warhols, Mrs Magician, and Riverboat Gamblers on stages across the U.S. and the UK. In recent years Gentlemen Rogues opened for indie-punk icons Superchunk and Bob Mould, who personally selected the band to provide sole support on the Texas leg of his Distortion and Blue Hearts tour. Brand New full length "Surface Noise" is set for release February 16th 2024. Thanks for listening!!!
