El historiador e investigador Pedro Corral decidió leerse la novela La península de las casas vacías, de David Uclés (Siruela), porque parecía, según sus declaraciones públicas, que su intención era evitar una visión maniquea de buenos y malos sobre la Guerra Civil. Pero la realidad es que no es así. Son varios los hechos históricos que tergiversa, entre ellos, que el Presidente de la República evitara que sus profesores agustinos del colegio de San Lorenzo de El Escorial acabaran ajusticiados en Paracuellos del Jarama: "salvó a los monjes agustinos de su colegio en El Escorial (sic) nada más estallar el conflicto" (página 252). No fue así. José María Marco ya lo contó para Libertad Digital, más de sesenta frailes fueron trasladados a checas y después asesinados por el Gobierno republicano. Corral, que tenía ciertas expectativas con la novela, siente una profunda decepción después de leerla. Habla en la entrevista de "un compendio de no pocos tópicos y falsedades sobre los dos bandos de la Guerra Civil". Otro de los episodios que destaca el invitado es el del bombardeo sobre la población civil que huía por la carretera de Almería en febrero de 1937 (página 298), la conocida como la ‘Desbandá'. Imputa al capitán Carlos de Haya el corte de las comunicaciones de Málaga y el diseño de la operación sobre la población civil. En un artículo en Libertad Digital del 8 de febrero de 2023 Corral ya demostró que es mentira.Aniversario de la 'Desbandá'. En descargo del Capitán HayaPedro Corral La confusión se produce porque dos historiadores consultan mal la documentación del Archivo Histórico del Ejército del Aire. De hecho, la familia de Haya representa precisamente la fraternidad entre los dos bandos. Uclés, que ha vendido cerca de 300.000 ejemplares de su novela, que ha tardado en escribir 15 años (empezó con 19, ha contado), se ha negado a acudir a unas jornadas sobre la Guerra Civil organizadas por Arturo Pérez-Reverte y que llevaban por título "La guerra que todos perdimos". Uclés, en un vídeo cargado de emoción y sobreactuación, explicó que no quería compartir cartel con José María Aznar y con Iván Espinosa de los Monteros. Tras la repentina huida de Uclés, otros intervinientes también se bajaron el cartel y al final los organizadores cancelaron el evento. La reacción de Reverte en X ha sido recordar un vídeo de su charla de 2017 acompañado de este mensaje: "Dedicado a sectarios y tontos del ciruelo".
