Ep.237 Amanda Coulson has worked for three decades as a scholar, critic, curator and cultural producer, having collaborated with artists and institutions, private and corporate colleagues, in the US, Europe, and various sites in the Caribbean. A dual-national (Bahamas/US), she grew up between London, Nassau, and New York, where she studied for her Master's Degree at the Institute of Fine Arts (NYU) and started her career at the Old Master dealers, Wildenstein & Sons, going on to work in various art galleries in London, Paris and Milan. Developing as a writer, Coulson spent 2 years as the international Editor of tema celeste, an Italian bi-lingual contemporary art magazine, before consolidating her critical practice writing for a variety of publications (Frieze, Modern Painters, ARTNews, among others) and providing critical texts for monographic gallery and museum shows. Coulson also worked as a freelance curator in Germany, organizing several exhibitions in Berlin, Frankfurt, Wiesbaden, Leipzig and Vienna (Austria), with special attention to Bahamian artists. Noting a lack of platforms for galleries representing emerging art, in 2005 she co-founded the VOLTA art fairs, which take place annually in New York and Basel, Switzerland. In 2011, she was invited home to The Bahamas to be Executive Director at the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas (NAGB), where her focus was on increasing global awareness of the contemporary Caribbean art scene and on expanding the capacity and reach of the NAGB through a rigorous combination of capital works, collaborative projects and the building of strong inter-island, regional and international networks. She served on the Davidoff Art Initiative (now Caribbean Art Initiative) Board from 2012-2018, and on the Board of the Museums Association of the Caribbean (MAC) until she stepped down from the NAGB in 2021, after a decade at the helm. She is the founding partner at TERN, a new Nassau-based gallery operated by three Bahamian women whose aim is to support Bahamian and Caribbean artists in telling their own stories the global stage. [Episode 37] This month barSILENCE is taking off into the high-tech futuristic world of Ace Combat 3: Electrosphere! Released in Japan in 1999 and internationally in 2000, this ambitious entry in Namco's legendary flight-combat series pushed the PlayStation to its limits and had an awesome cyberpunk-infused narrative, stunning visuals, and one of the most experimental soundtracks in the series. Composed by a powerhouse team including Tetsukazu Nakanishi, Hiroshi Okubo, Go Shiina, Koji Nakagawa, and Kanako Kakino, the music of Ace Combat 3 is a brilliant fusion of techno and electronica, mixed with an atmospheric ambiance that perfectly complements the game's futuristic setting. To celebrate the 25th anniversary, Namco released a fully remastered soundtrack in 2024, and we'll be experiencing it in a techno futuristic playlist-style format. This one goes out to all our loyal listeners who have been with me since the start of CITIUS MAG and know that I've been after this goal for a very long time. On Feb. 15th, I lined up for the mile at Trials of Miles' The Circuit at The Armory in New York City. After three solid months of training under coach Mark Coogan, we decided it would be a good test to see where my fitness was at. 4:57.88 was a little bit of a surprise but so fulfilling.Decided to jump on the mic with my wife to recap the night at the track.Host: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on Instagram SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSKETONE-IQ: Level up your training with Ketone-IQ – a clean shot of energy with no sugar or caffeine. Wilma Nielsen, the Swedish mid-distance phenom from Oregon, joins the show today to discuss her recent breakthroughs in running. Wilma is fresh off breaking the school record in the mile in January at the Dr. Sander Scorcher indoor meet at the Armory in New York. This six-second PR places her number three all time in the NCAA for the indoor mile and number two on Sweden's all-time indoor list. Wilma is a two-time All-American and three-time Swedish National Champion. She won the bronze medal at the European U23 Championships in Estonia where she ran a 2:02.29 in the 800m. Wilma has run collegiately for Bradley University, the University of Washington and now Oregon. Wilma was born in Gothenburg, Sweden. She has a twin sister, Julia–who was a package deal with her at Bradley–as well as older siblings Simon and Elisabeth, the latter of who was a Swedish National Championship finalist in the 800m in 2019 and 2020. Needless to say, running was a fixture in the Nielsen household. Wilma was running fast even in her high school days, logging PRs of 58.19 in the 400m, 2:10.01 in the 800m and 4:31.59 in the 1,500m. Since she started running collegiately, she has lowered those to 57.50 in the 400m, 2:02.26 in the 800m, 4:07.38 in the 1500m and the aforementioned 4:25.89 mile. In today's conversation, Wilma dives into her recent 4:25 Mile, her plans to do bigger and better things at the Millrose games, her hopes for her future, how she's grown as an athlete while at Oregon, what it's like to have Shalane Flanagan as a coach, and so much more. Take the time to learn from and get insights from one of the biggest stars in the NCAA right now! Tap into the Wilma Nielsen Special. Hofer can be a number one goaltender at some point somewhere. People are starting to doubt the Good or Bad website. Sounds like the Armory is in a little bit of debt. (11:51-29:33) Mt. Rushmore of St. Louis Rams. USA Today has their season grades for all 135 teams. Doug's not even trying at this point. What grade did Mizzou and Illinois get? Bret Bielema and Josh Pate getting into it on Twitter. Sounds like a rage bait list. Richard Belzer. (29:42-43:11) Audio of Coach Schertz after the LaSalle win. In the final hour of the show Katie Kull, St. Louis Post-Dispatch reporter covering St. Louis City and federal courts joins the show to talk about how Jerome Williams was once the face of crime prevention and also worked for a multi-state drug dealer. Next, the Armory developer reveals a debt more than $400 million. KMOX Reporter Maria Keena joins the show to talk about the high likelihood of radioactive waste in smoldering landfill.
“I know that track is fast and with the energy that the crowd brings and the fields that show up at Millrose, it's going to be a great competition. You go to Millrose to win and you're racing to win. That's what brings the fast times. I'm going to put myself in a position to compete for the win and hopefully walk away really happy.” My guest for today's episode is Josette Andrews, who is going to be one of the headliners at the 2025 Millrose Games on February 8th at the Armory in New York City. Tickets for the meet are on sale now at millrosegames.org. Who else is in the field you might be wondering? As of right now, I have a preliminary entry list. I don't know if some things have changed since these names were added into this document, but we've got Josette Andrews, Karissa Schweizer, Tsige Gebreselama, Whittni Morgan, Courtney Wayment, Katelyn Tuohy, Elly Henes, Sarah Healy, Melissa Courtney-Bryant, Gabbi Jennings, Hilda Olemomoi, Nozomi Tanaka, and so many more competitors and loaded races in the mile, the 800m, the 60m hurdles, and 60m dash. Lots to look forward to. We'll be on-site for that meet. In this episode, Josette and I talk a little bit about that because we're both East Coast people. She's from Jersey, 20 minutes away from the Armory, and I'm, of course, a proud New Yorker who will take any opportunity to boast about the Millrose Games. We talk about the energy and atmosphere of the Millrose Games, but then in addition to that, we reflect on Josette's 2024 season, which wasn't perfect. She dealt with a foot injury, which sidelined her throughout spring and forced her to open up her season at the Olympic Trials, which wasn't easy. “I would love to improve my indoor personal best. I mean, the next bar up from [4.91m] would be an indoor American record, that five-meter barrier. So you go 4.92m for a meeting record and then why not put it up to something like that? It's a very natural increment. I would love to get that record for sure, and then hopefully a couple more.” My guest for today's episode is Katie Moon, an Olympic and 2x World Champion in the women's pole vault. Moon added to her trophy case in 2024, claiming a World Indoor bronze medal and an Olympic silver. She accomplished all this despite fighting with an Achilles injury that delayed her outdoor opener until late May and affected her training all season. In our conversation, Katie gave us some insight into her offseason, reflected on a successful yet hampered 2024 campaign, and looked forward to what's sure to be a banner year for her in 2025. One of the first steps for Katie next season will be a trip to The Armory to compete in her fifth Millrose Games. She shared her excitement for returning to the iconic meet and the idea that she might have something big up her sleeve come February 8th. You can get your tickets at The Armory's website. “I know that I have to come in even stronger, even faster, even better. I'm looking to break the world record indoors this season and win the world indoor title. That's not going to come with me still living in being an Olympic champion from August. We've got to do it again.” My guest for today's episode is Masai Russell, the Olympic champion in the 100m hurdles and one of track's brightest new stars. Masai's gold medal performance in Paris wasn't just a victory; it was a statement after a season filled with ups and downs and doubts. She channeled sheer will and resilience to seize the biggest title of her career crossing the finish line in a jaw-dropping photo finish that left fans around the world celebrating her triumph. In this episode, Masai reflects on her remarkable 2024 season, the challenges she overcame to reach the top, and how she's already back to work with even bigger plans for 2025. There's also some great mindset talk in this conversation. Plus, she's here to announce one of her first races of 2025 will be the 60m hurdles at the Millrose Games. “A lot of the time it comes down to whether I'd rather set a world record in February or win the World Championships and defend my title in September. There's a lot that goes into it, but I think I'm fast enough to go after a world record in a few events.” My guest for today's episode is none other than Cole Hocker, the 23-year-old American middle distance star who shocked the world at the Paris Olympics by winning gold in the men's 1500m. While the pre-race buzz centered on Jakob Ingebrigtsen and Josh Kerr, it was Cole who flew under the radar and stormed to victory in an Olympic record of 3:27.65. If you go back into our podcast archives, you can find an episode that we did with Cole in Paris just 48 hours after his victory. It was really cool to have that moment etched in time and to hear how fresh his thoughts and feelings were. We touch on life since Paris in this conversation. From his breakout performance in Tokyo to the Olympic triumph in Paris, Cole has established himself as one of the best middle distance runners in the world. We reflect on his incredible 2024 season and learn how he's gearing up for another big year with the World Championships in Tokyo on the horizon.
