On this episode of Flex Your Head, Nelson from Nelson and host Jason Schreurs gush about Bad Religion's 1990 landmark melodic punk album, Against the Grain. From the thesaurus-busting lyrics to the patented "oohs aaahs" and spur-of-the-moment guitar solos, this album is a stone-cold classic. https://badreligion.com Featured song clips: Bad Religion - "Modern Man" from Against the Grain (Epitaph Records, 1990) Bad Religion - "Flat Earth Society" from Against the Grain (Epitaph Records, 1990) Bad Religion - "21st Century (Digital Boy)" from Against the Grain (Epitaph Records, 1990) Propagandhi - "Middle Finger Response" from How to Clean Everything (Fat Wreck Chords, 2013) Bad Religion - "21st Century (Digital Boy)" from Against the Grain (Epitaph Records, 1990) Bad Religion - "Blenderhead" from Against the Grain (Epitaph Records, 1990) Bad Religion - "Anesthesia" from Against the Grain (Epitaph Records, 1990) Bad Religion - "Entropy" from Against the Grain (Epitaph Records, 1990) Bad Religion - "Turn out the Light" from Against the Grain (Epitaph Records, 1990) About this podcast: Flex Your Head is a spinoff of the Scream Therapy podcast where host Jason Schreurs welcomes a guest each episode to discuss a classic punk album. Matt Johnson, former Mars Hill elder and drummer in the "Christians in a band not Christian Band" bands Roadside Monument, Blenderhead, and Raft of Dead Monkeys talks with us about the pre-Mars Hill 1990s Seattle Christian punk community, centered around Calvary Chapel in the University District, where Damien Jurado, Dave Bazan and many others also attended. We talk about his time in those bands, particularly Roadside Monument, who recently played a reunion show at Furnace Fest. We also talk about his 17 years at Mars Hill, what it was like being on staff as it was imploding, and the lingering trauma of that experience. -Buy Matt Johnson's book "Getting Jesus Wrong" right here: https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/getting-jesus-wrong-matt-johnson/1124724146 -Matt Johnson writes in Mockingbird while looking back at his experiences at Mars Hill Church and after: https://mbird.com/religion/17-years-at-mars-hill-life-after-disillusionment/ -Follow Roadside Monument on Instagram: @roadsidemonumentband -Read about and see a video of their 2017 Seattle reunion show: https://www.npr.org/sections/allsongs/2017/06/19/532960633/roadside-monument-15-years-and-2-700-miles-later-reunite-a-lost-seattle -Check out Zach's music by going to: https://muzach.bandcamp.com -Buy VCW merch: https://www.etsy.com/shop/VCWHall Twitter: Twitter: @vcwpod Zach- @muzach Dave- @Davejlester Podcast music by Zach Malm Logo by Zach Malm
Time to smash our heads on the punk rock! In our final episode of Music Mayhem, The Wheel of Mayhem deemed Christian punk's "Prime Candidate for a Burnout" by Blenderhead worthy of closing out this year's series. Rounding out our completely unplanned series-within-a-series about the Christian recording industry, Blenderhead couldn't be further away from what dc Talk and Jars of Clay represented. Raw, uncompromising, visceral...LOUD. Blenderhead was a hardcore Christian punk band from the legendary underground label Tooth and Nail Records. Father Chuck grew up with this album, but JP didn't even know who Blenderhead was until he put it on the wheel. Press play, and get ready to experience "Prime Candidate for a Burnout" by Blenderhead. The early 90's were very busy for me. After moving to Portland from Southern California, I was a new father, I was working on my second club called the Push and also my new band Sometime Sunday. This episode I talk about that and the influence of people like Shayde Bridges, Todd Fadel of Sappo, Billy Power from Blenderhead, Andy Prickett of the Prayer Chain and Brandon Ebel from Tooth and Nail records. My musical world was about to come full circle as I would go from being a superfan to touring, recording and playing with some of my musical heroes.
Doug Lorig is a Seattle musician most known for his guitar playing in Roadside Monument and Raft of Dead Monkeys. He currently plays in the band Graphic Nature. We talk about falling in love with music, the Seattle mid-90's music scene, Tooth and Nail Records, and his time with Roadside Monument. Enjoy the show and listen to Doug's music!

Ninety Pound Wuss formed in 1994 just down the road from MxPx, and became one of the first bands on the label. The Seattle indie scene at the time was quite artistic and developed compared to the rest of the country, it could easily be described as snobby. Bands like Ninety Pound Wuss and Roadside Monument had a very difficult fight to prove their legitimacy in the eyes of their peers and to get the opportunities they deserved, so being associated with and dropped into the Christian pop punk subculture gave them great exposure but came at a cost. This was an in person conversation and features Jeff and Marty from Ninety Pound Wuss, and legend Matt Johnson from Blenderhead, Roadside Monument, and Ninety Pound Wuss. https://labeledpodcast.com/ Support Labeled on Patreon Join Labeled on Facebook Pre-order / pre-save Lightworker’s "Fury By Failure," out June 12th :: http://lightworker.ffm.to/fury Follow Lightworker on Spotify :: https://spoti.fi/3fZm8XD SONGS YOU HEARD ON THIS EPISODE: Ninety Pound Wuss “Something Must Break” Ninety Pound Wuss “Perserverence” Norma Jean - “I Used to Hate Cell Phones But Now I Hate Car Accidents” Live at Cornerstone ’02 Blenderhead “Bottle Breaker” Extol “Undeceived” Frodus “Lights On for Safety” Zao “To Think Of You is to Treasure an Absent Memory” Blenderhead “La Grieta” Roadside Monument “Compressor District” Starflyer 59 “A Housewife Love Song” Ninety Pound Wuss “Girl Song” MORE FROM TOOTH & NAIL: * Labeled: Music From The Podcast: smarturl.it/labeledplaylist * DISCOVER IT: New Tracks from T&N Records: smarturl.it/TNNDiscover * This Is Solid State: New Tracks from Solid State Records: https://spoti.fi/2CUCsaH * Tooth & Nail Store (LABELED Patreon members get 20% off everything): tnn.lnk.to/store

I have returned to The Archives from Tooth & Nail mail order, Blenderhead, Point Blank and such. It seems there is a deep well of these strange artifacts from the past called letters. Things written in pen and pencil on paper, placed in an envelope and sent through the mail with stamps! I know, I know...very strange indeed! One of these letters makes me look bad...so bad...painfully bad. I hope you enjoy more letters!
What's up Achievers? I took a little dig into The Archives this week and pulled out some letters. Letters to Tooth & Nail. Letters to Blenderhead. Fan letters. Business letters. Good letters. Bad letters. I hope you enjoy a little look into the past this week.
Join me from "The Temple Of Dead Media" with my guest Chris Estey of Big Freak Media. Chris is a writer, poet, publicist and genius (in my opinion) who is a walking encyclopedia of knowledge on music, pop culture, fanzines, movies, comics, literature, history and more. Estey is also a long time friend who made critical contributions to the 90's Seattle underground music scene including my former band, Blenderhead. Good luck keeping up! Greetings! Three old friends walk into a bar... well, two of them were smart enough to duck, the other one is writing this terrible joke. (Whatever- it wasn't even a bar anyway, it was some cheeky community office space thing) Yes, it's true, like a three-fold cord of grumpiness, Mike Lewis of Giving is Believing, Billy Power of Urban Achiever and yours truly all got together to solve all the world's problems, right before Christmas, in the Greatest City in the World. As you've probably been dealing with any number of those problems today.... why not hang around with us an find out why we didn't get much done? (Hint: GUNNNNZ) Come! Warm yourself by the fires of the Podcastalypse, weary Never Wases! Enjoy!
This week we're going to take a look at my new book, Bottle Breaker. Bottle Breaker is my tour journal from my former band Blenderhead's 1995, 7 week, national tour with labelmates MxPx. We'll listen to stories from that tour with previous guests Matt Johnson (Blenderhead), Joel Bell (Ghoti Hook) and Mike Herrera (MxPx) and I'll read an excerpt from the book. You can download the book now for free by going to - http://bottlebreakerbook.com/.
Jeff Bettger & Matt Johnson have known each other for over 20 years. They've played in multiple bands together in and outside of Tooth & Nail Records. Ninety Pound Wuss, Raft Of Dead Monkeys, Suffering And The Hideous Thieves together and then Matt has played been in Blenderhead, Roadside Monument, and a shit ton of other bands. They also both happened to be drawn into the Mars Hill Church culture and served as Pastors. These Tooth & Nail boys and I sit down with whiskey, beer, beards and glasses to chat about the state of our faith and our hopes for the future. Jeff and Matt also have some great times reminiscing about the record label days while I ask them the questions we all really wanted to know back then. Where the bands doing drugs? Having sex with groupies? And did MXPX pee on stage? These whiskey induced theological ramblings are an important and joyful conversation about things we may never be able to prove but hope life could be like. Matt does a rad job summing up the rambling and gives us things to think on, and then we hug it out.
