Questions for the Week:The CDC has recently recommended that people resume wearing masks indoors again, even if you are vaccinated. How do we help folks process this change? Further, as COVID cases surge, it can be easy to blame the unvaccinated. As people of faith, how do we help people avoid "blame" but still push for change?I've been wondering about the significance and meaning of church membership for our denomination. People keep talking about declining membership in our congregations. Maybe it's our definition and understanding of membership that needs to change. What do you think?Special Guest:Timothy Wotring, Pastor, Memorial Presbyterian Church of Fox ChaseGuest Question:I am about to start my first call as pastor to a congregation. My question is for folks who are about a year or so into their first call: Looking back on your first year as an ordained pastor serving a congregation, what guidance or advice would you give to someone who is just about to start their first call?Resource Roundup:Presbyterian Week of Action with Rev. I didn't fit anywhere in 1985 high school. Nerds and geeks were cooler than me. I was something else entirely. I was a Christian youth group kid. But that's not all...I wanted to be in a kick ass rock band. Not good.Back then I got my first taste of both being in a band and promoting a show for others to come to. From then on it would be a drug to me. I would also get my first experience in being at odds with Christians and Church which would prove to be very motivating for me in the future. After high school I watched my dreams of being a rockstar dashed to pieces. So I loaded up my truck from my beloved southern California and headed to what might as well have been another planet......Portland, Oregon.
I’m going to give a quick overview and timeline of the things I've done in the last 30 years and explain where I'm headed with this podcast. I sincerely hope that you have had a great experience at one of my concerts or events. Tom Fest, Sometime Sunday, The Push, Tragedy Ann, Twin Sister, Gamechurch, Alpine, The Connection, The Armory, Epic, Spin Cycle, The Loft, Star Went Nova, Gecko Monks and a few more ;). In the near future I will do some interviews, video and get into a few of my favorite topics. For now I hope you'll check out this introduction to my podcast. Cheers from Southern California!

The Fandom Files is joined by Mikee Bridges, the founder of Gamechurch. After years in the Christian rock scene, Bridges founded Gamechurch, which seeks to evangelize through video games. Members travel from convention to convention, handing out copies of their bible — "Jesus FTW" — and trying to convince gamers to let Christ into their multiplayer sessions. Bridges talks to us about the group's mission, where they get their money, why he's bothered by most Christians, and how to reconcile video game violence with bible study. It's very interesting the way I found out about this wonderful organization called GameChurch. I was looking for an author and was clicking through site after site. Somehow, I landed on this site. The world can be divided into two camps: people who are playing Pokémon Go and people who haven’t realized what they’re missing. Drew Dixon falls in the former camp. An avid gamer and editor-in-chief of the nonprofit Game Church, the Nashville resident has spent the greater part of this month catching Pokémon, while exploring his city and making new friends. Earlier this week, Dixon wrote for The Local Church on what Christians miss by turning the gaming phenomenon into a recruitment tool. “I’m beginning to suspect that by plotting ways to leverage Pokémon Go to get more people in their pews, many churches are missing out on the exploratory, community-building spirit that makes the game such a powerful cultural force—the same spirit, in fact, that represents its greatest opportunity for churches nationwide,” he wrote. One question churches might start asking themselves instead: ”How could we possibly engage in this game redemptively in a way that would be loving to our neighbor and would celebrate something in creation that is good?” Dixon joined Morgan and Katelyn this week to discuss the allure of video games, how churches have positively responded to Pokémon Go players, and why we love to play. Plus, everyone shares their favorite game.
Christ and Culture: In our newest series we look at the broad topic of engaging media and social entertainment as a Christian. This week we chat with Drew Dixon (Editor-in-chief of GameChurch.com) on how a Christian engages video games. Derek W. White, a.k.a. the "Geek Preacher", joins Grant, Peter, and Branden as a guest host, bringing with him his knowledge of the geek convention scene and Christian organizations and activities within it. The Christian Gamers' Guild, Fans For Christ, GameChurch, and Innroads Ministries all get specific shoutouts, as do the worship services at a few major conventions. We also spend some time talking about being a Christian at geeky conventions, and a geek at Christian get-togethers. Finally, we wrap up with Derek's own personal journey to faith, a pastoral position, and a lifetime of geekery. Scripture: Genesis 12:1, Matthew 18:19-20, Hebrews 10:22-25

GameChurch was birthed through a chance meeting with the directors of xxxchurch.com at a conference in Portland, Oregon. After spending 1 year researching the video game industry and assorted trade shows and expos, the leadership of GameChurch found something missing. “We wanted to bring a simple message of hope to the culture of gaming”, states Mikee Bridges, founder and Director of GameChurch. “We are all gamers and want to bring this message to our own world of nerd culture.” Borrowing the model of xxxchurch.com GameChurch has set out to spread their message in a new way. In 2012 GameChurch attended 8 gaming conventions across the United States. At each convention GameChurch hosts a booth replete with irreverent and controversial graphics to stir in attendees the one question GameChurch loves to answer. “What are you doing?”. To that question the answer is, “We are here to tell you Jesus loves you….and please take some free stuff”. As one walks up to the GameChurch booth, they are first met with a large 8 foot tall picture of Jesus with a headset on and a game controller in his hand and t-shirts with the phrase “Jesus loves gamers” on them. The GameChurch booth is filled with free swag that you find at any trade show such as stickers, t-shirts, buttons and lanyards. To set them apart, GameChurch added their own gamer Bible to the swag list. “The Bible is the Gospel of John with commentaries from gaming culture in it”, says Bridges. To date GameChurch has given out more than 35,000 of these Bibles. http://gamechurch.com https://www.facebook.com/gamechurch https://twitter.com/gamechurch
So, we wrapped up El Shaddai, and, for better and for worse, our expectations were pretty spot on. As you might imagine considering our previous podcast, stuff got deep again. We also had some theories and conjecture about a lot of the messages and artistic choices present in the game. Even if El Shaddai ended up not being for you, we hope you'll listen anyway to see what we took away from it. Enoch As usual on our follow up podcasts, be aware that this is loaded with spoilers. We assume that, by this point, you've either played the game or given up on it, so if that's not the case, finish up first (it's only about 10 hours tops) then give it a listen. Ishtar. Interesting resemblance right? It's also a good time to remind our listeners that Richard did some great (although also spoiler filled) write-ups on El Shaddai. You can find them in the show notes on our first podcast discussing this game, and don't forget to check out Richard Clark's work over at Christ and Pop Culture and Game Church. Thanks again for joining us Richard!
Yes, that's right, we brought in a special guest for this one: Richard Clark of, well, half the internet really. Mostly he's known for his work at Christ and Pop Culture and Game Church. For our intentions however, it's his work covering our next game, El Shaddai, that got my attention. He's written pretty extensively on the game, and we're very happy to have him on board for these next two podcasts. I'll be honest, this is probably one of the best recordings we've done so far. What started off as pretty standard fare conversational topics ended up getting deep. Really deep. I'm not going to spoil it for you, but make sure to give this one a listen. Also, be sure to check out Richard's work on the game: Review for Killscreen.comEditorial for Paste And then a four-part series for GameRanx. WARNING! THESE CONTAIN SPOILERS!
