Today we're breaking from the norm just a bit. The Ranger talks about his entry into professional wrestling, working Fire Star's biggest show ever on August 31, 2019 in front of more than 500 people, and much more over the course of this episode.
Pretty average episode of Prime Time, sorry for the long delay between episodes. We'll be back regularly shortly.
Today I'm joined by Gerard from the Through the Table Podcast and we talk about the AEW Double or Nothing show. Certainly a tale of two, maybe even 3, shows. The Pre-Show was a disaster. The Battle Royal is one of the worst matches I've ever seen on a major show; but not even the worst match of the last 30 days as we record this. The segment with Peter Avalon is terrible and buries Kylie Rae, the actual star of the segment. The singles match on the pre-show was fair, but there's such a bad taste from the first two segments that it's hard to enjoy. The Main Show had a few decent matches to start, but nothing terribly impressive. But the last three matches were stellar, with Cody vs Dustin being the best match I've seen in at least the last 10 years, maybe the best match I've ever seen. Overall, the show was fair, lots of ups and downs, but it does a decent job as a debut show and sets up some stuff for the future.
Apologies for missing last week, we've had a lot going on at Undercard Headquarters. This episode will cover the May 25, 1987 episode of Prime Time Wrestling. This episode starts off and we see Bobby Heenan's action figure, doll as they called it, with an improvised neck brace to reflect his actual condition. The first match of the show is Paul Roma and Jim Powers teaming up to face Cowboy Bob Orton and Don Muraco. Not much incredible in the match, but we get an anatomy lesson from Gorilla Monsoon. Next we get a segment featuring Superstar Billy Graham talking about his hip injury, upcoming surgery, and him saying he intends to return to the WWF. We see Outback Jack face off against Frenchy Martin from Toronto's Maple Leaf Gardens. Certainly not much to this match. Next up is Sam Houston's WWF debut in Madison Square Garden. Bobby Heenan talks about King Kong Bundy's match at WrestleMania 3 and he makes a comment about the midget wrestlers that must be heard to be believed. Gene Okerlund interviews Brutus Beefcake. The Rougeau Brothers squash the team of Tiger Chung Lee and Jimmy Jack Funk. Nikolai Volkoff faces Corporal Kirschner in a match where the highlight is Bobby Heenan talking about buying Ken Patera a retirement home. Finally, we get the feature match where Butch Reed goes against Tito Santana. Overall, this is a very good match for WWF television in this era even with the odd finish. The highlight of the week is the announcement that Hulk Hogan will be on the show next week.
The flagship show of Friday Evening's Undercard is back after a one week absence, covering the May 18, 1987 episode of WWF Prime Time Wrestling. With: -Bobby Heenan cutting a promo on Ken Patera where he says that Ken Patera should be in a body cast. -A short match between Johnny V and Brutus Beefcake where Heenan and Monsoon eloquently discuss the difference between a choke hold and a sleeper. -A match between Iron Mike Sharpe and Sivi Afi where Sharpe is billed as Canada's Greatest Athlete. The match went just shy of 10 minutes, felt like an eternity. -We get a replay of the Can-Am Connection vs Sheik and Volkoff match from the most recent Saturday Night's Main event. -Frenchy Martin faces off against Nick Kiniski...to answer a question from the show, Nick Kiniski is, in fact, the son of the famous Gene Kiniski. -Gene Okerlund interviews Ricky Steamboat...commentary on the interview is extensive. -We see a six-man tag match featuring the British Bulldogs and Tito Santana. -Ken Patera vs Hercules version 2.0, recorded the day after their first match which was so bad it couldn't be aired. -Demolition vs the Islanders, Demolition is being put over very strong on Prime Time, this is one of the few really progressing stories on the show. -Okerlund interviews the Honky Tonk Man -Ricky Steamboat vs Butch Reed closes the show. Overall, a pretty good show, not the best we've seen, but hardly the worst. We'll be back next week. Hopefully we can get a show out on the Tom McGee special recently released on the WWE Network and a few other things that we have simmering. Thanks for listening.

We also talk about how main event level talent was used in WWE during this time period, especially a main event guy like Hulk Hogan. We also have some top notch matches: Kamala against Jake Roberts, Kamala has "Kim Chee" in his corner, but is it really Kim Chee? George Steele against Macho Man Randy Savage in a lumberjack match...how else does a lumberjack match go other than immediate degeneration? The British Bulldogs against The Hart Foundation, best 2 out of 3 falls for the tag team championship. Really good match between two great tag teams. Hercules against Ricky Steamboat for the Intercontinental Championship. And finally the Can-Am Connection against Nikolai Volkoff and The Iron Sheik. Overall, a really good show.
