HEADLINE: Pangea's Mega-Monsoons, Coal Formation, and the Unclassifiable Tully Monster BOOK TITLE: Other Lands, a journey through Earth's Extinct Worlds GUEST AUTHOR NAME: Thomas Halliday 200-WORD SUMMARY: This segment examines the Permian and Carboniferous eras. In the Permian (253 million years ago), the single supercontinent Pangea caused a mega-monsoon system involving extreme seasonal wetness and dryness. Sites like Moradi, Niger, show creatures adapted to this arid environment. Organisms included the bulk herbivore Umoist and the apex predator Gorgonops, a close relative of mammals with large canines. This period was immediately followed by the "Great Dying," the largest mass extinction event in Earth's history. The Carboniferous (390 million years ago) saw the first extensive forests. As trees fell into vast, tropical swamps, the water inhibited decay, leading to the preservation of organic material that eventually formed the world's coal deposits. This process sequestered carbon, contributing to lower atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations later in history. The final topic is the Tully Monster(Tullimonstrum), a small, torpedo-shaped creature with eyes on stalks that remains a profound paleontological mystery. It is intensely debated whether this organism is a vertebrate, and because it has no known descendants, it is classified as an evolutionary experiment that did not pan out.

A large and strong area of high pressure will keep much of the central and eastern U.S. dry into mid-October, worsening drought, lowering river levels, raising wildfire risk, and bringing wide temperature swings. Also, a shift in winds will end the North American monsoon across the Southwest, bringing drier, warmer weather and increased fire danger in the days ahead. Learn more about your ad choices. Anuvab Pal and Kunaal Roy Kapur return with the monsoon, and as always, the mosquitoes have them pondering the connections to history. Their chat then dives into the hilarious chaos of healthcare in India and America, from the peculiar ritual of blood tests to the indignity of a stool sample. The episode culminates in a truly unforgettable story about a world leader and a very peculiar "poop case", the perfect comedic, and slightly shocking, end to a discussion on all things medical.
Hosts and guests hunt dove and pigeons in Yuma along the border wall, contend with a surprise monsoon that floods fields and slows the birds, and share stories of canal rescues, helicopter flyovers, and late‑night pool antics. The episode also highlights sponsors and custom call makers, offers a special Tule Creek discount for listeners, and mixes hunting gear talk with food, camaraderie, and off‑the‑wall humor.
Episode Summary This episode of the "90 Miles from Needles" podcast does a racing dive into the fascinating topic of monsoonal rainstorms in the desert, focusing on their effects and significance. With detailed insights into recent rain events in Twentynine Palms, California, Chris shares the challenges and celebrations that accompany these powerful meteorological phenomena. Amid the backdrop of a biome shaped by water scarcity, the podcast explores both the danger and the necessity of monsoon rains, sparking reflections on desert life and conservation. Clarke elaborates on how water, despite its scarcity, is the primary sculptor of desert landscapes and essential for the survival of unique flora and fauna. He details the local impact of monsoonal rains on infrastructure and wildlife, emphasizing the importance of respecting and preparing for these natural events. Key Takeaways: Monsoonal rainstorms are pivotal in shaping and maintaining the unique ecosystems of deserts. Deserts are defined by their lack of water, with meteorological events like monsoons highlighting the delicate balance between scarcity and abundance in these environments. Human safety during monsoonal rains is paramount, as flash floods pose a significant risk to life and property, underscoring the importance of mindful interaction with desert landscapes. An engaging description of the scent of wet creosote after a monsoon provides a sensory glimpse into the captivating transformations brought about by these rainstorms. Environmental advocacy and awareness are crucial for protecting desert ecosystems from threats and promoting sustainable interactions with these fragile areas. Notable Quotes: "Monsoons are a reminder that the best days in the desert are full of passionate intensity, while the worst lack all convection." 'We get very angry when rain disrupts our lives and brings our cities to a halt, but by the time the elections come around, we have forgotten how angry we were. Rarely, if ever, do these urban failures or the corruption and political ineptitude that lead to them swing an election. We vote instead for caste, for religion or for some conception of national interest. Governance simply does not matter. Politicians know this. So even as we rage and vent as we have been doing over the last few weeks, they chuckle to themselves and go back to counting their money. In the old days, they would at least offer token apologies. Now they don't even bother to do that. They just announce that schools will close for two days or urge us to work from home. And we let them get away with it. So let's not blame politicians alone. Let's ask ourselves why we don't demand more accountability from them.' says Author & ThePrint Columnist Vir Sanghvi. On a soft monsoon evening, the sky streaked with golden bands, tropical clouds drawn up from the Sea of Cortez, everything is vibrant, delirious light. No sound but the crunch of boots and dog paws in the sandy wash lined with desert willow and Mormon tea, before we climb up to the mesa and through a high-desert forest of Joshua trees and Juniper. We sit for a while, at sunset: Great Apollo blazing over western mountains.Support the show: https://www.patreon.com/desertoracleSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
