Main Idea: With respect to the disciplined individual, the goal of church discipline is to help the individual repent of sin and be restored to fellowship in the church. Series: Healthy Church Topic: Church Discipline Lesson Title: Repentance and Restoration Teacher: Bryan Kurty
Bryan, Scott, Shawn, and Adam talk through some final thoughts on Church Membership.
Main Idea: If a professing Christian's sin is so serious that it renders his or her claim to be a Christian no longer believable, the church should exclude that person from their membership and not associate with him or her until it can observe the fruits of repentance. Series: Healthy Church Topic: Church Discipline Lesson Title: How to Confront Someone With Sin Teacher: Shawn Saylor
Main Idea: God calls us to lovingly confront and restore our fellow church members who are caught in sin. Jesus teaches us to deal with sin in the church by confronting those who sin and exhorting them to repent. If the person doesn't repent even after being confronted by two or three others and then the whole church, the church is to exclude that person from its membership. Series: Healthy Church Topic: Church Discipline Lesson Title: How to Confront Someone With Sin Teacher: Scott Cunningham
Main Idea: God calls all the members of a local church to build each other up in love so that the church will grow in holiness. That is, he calls all of us to practice formative discipline with one another: to encourage and instruct one another in living as Christians. Series: Healthy Church Topic: Church Discipline Lesson Title: Building Up The Church Teacher: Scott Cunningham
Main Idea: God disciplines us because he loves us. His purpose is to help his children grow in holiness and humble dependence on him. Series: Healthy Church Topic: Church Discipline Lesson Title: Is Discipline Loving? Teacher: Adam Michael
Series: Healthy Church Topic: Membership Lesson Title: The Glory of Membership Teacher: Shawn Saylor Main Idea: Church membership—and the activity of regularly assembling with the church which it entails—should offer a foretaste of the glory of heaven.
Series: Healthy Church Topic: Membership Lesson Title: The Duties of Membership Teacher: Scott Cunningham Main Idea: As church members, we have the duty to imitate and submit to our leaders, to regularly assemble with the church, and to love and serve our fellow members. All of these duties are means by which we grow in godliness and help others to grow.
Series: Healthy Church Topic: Membership Lesson Title: The Nature of Membership Teacher: Shawn Saylor Main Idea: The members of a local church are interdependent. We all need each other. No one should say that the church doesn't need them, and no one can say that they don't need other church members.
Series: Healthy Church Topic: Membership Lesson Title: The Goal and Challenges of Membership Teacher: Adam Michael Main Idea: The goal of church membership is that every single church member would help the whole church grow to maturity in Christ. Every member of the church is called to overcome divisions and pursue unity in the church in order to reflect the church's union with Christ.
Series: Healthy Church Topic: Membership Lesson Title: The Mandate for Membership Teacher: Adam Michael Main Idea: Is church membership biblical? Yes! We see church membership in a number of passages in the New Testament which teach that: Churches have an “inside” and an “outside.” Church members are expected to know who does and does not belong to the church. Christians are under the authority of the church, such that if they persist in unrepentant sin, they are to be excluded from it. Christians are told to submit to their leaders, which means giving up our autonomy and putting ourselves under the church's authority. Leaders will give an account for those entrusted to their care, which means that they have to know who those people are.
Series: Healthy Church Topic: Membership Lesson Title: The Need for Membership Teacher: Bryan Kurty Main Idea: Christians need to be members of a local church so that, through a church's accountability and exhortation, we are protected from sin's deceiving, hardening effects.
