Danny Rensch went from being weaponized as a chess prodigy by a cult to co-founding Chess.com — detailed on part two of this two-part episode. (Find part one here!)Full show notes and resources can be found here: jordanharbinger.com/1290What We Discuss with Danny Rensch:Chess.com grew from a bootstrapped startup — laughed out of investor rooms — into a unicorn by building a chess creator economy and content ecosystem years before the pandemic boom, capturing 99% of chess's explosive growth when The Queen's Gambit and COVID lockdowns sent 400,000 new members flooding in per day.Catching cheaters in chess is a high-stakes statistical science. Chess.com employs 30 full-time specialists, from research scientists to in-house detectives, who use AI-driven algorithms to detect engine-assisted play, acting only when evidence would hold up in court rather than in the court of public opinion. The digital revolution in chess has dramatically compressed the learning curve. Kids now grow up playing against Magnus Carlsen and top grandmasters online, producing prodigies like a 12-year-old Argentine dubbed "the Messi of chess" who may break the youngest grandmaster record in history.Chess.com's public stance against Russia after the Ukraine invasion landed Danny Rensch on a dark web hit list, and years of closing cheaters' accounts have brought direct threats — including one player who tracked his tournament locations and emailed that he'd feel a gun behind his neck.Danny's most powerful insight is that you can redefine your relationship with your past. Forgiveness isn't rewriting what happened, it's freeing yourself from it, and believing "everything happens for a reason" becomes actionable when you realize you get to choose the reason and reclaim the power over your own story. And much more...And if you're still game to support us, please leave a review here — even one sentence helps! Brad and Dan speak at the Combine The Detroit Lions hit the NFL Scouting Combine on Tuesday with clarity at a critical spot. Minutes after Dan Campbell wrapped his podium, Taylor Decker posted that he is coming back. The timing sharpened the conversation that both Campbell and Brad Holmes started in Indianapolis. Plan as if Decker might not be there. Welcome him if he is. Now he is. That stabilizes left tackle. The Lions still want a real plan B at tackle. Even with Decker back for 2026, they need depth and a future answer. The return eases the pressure to chase a plug-and-play starter immediately. It also widens the draft choices. Detroit can shop for value instead of forcing the board. Ready-Now vs. Upside at Tackle, and the Ripple at Edge With Decker in place, the Lions can consider a developmental tackle at 17 or 50. That shifts the calculus between floor and ceiling. Spencer Fano and Francis Mauigoa are widely viewed as the most NFL-ready. They might not reach Detroit. The alternative is betting on growth. Caleb Lomu fits the long-range model. Monroe Freeling does too. There is even patience baked in for an injured stash like Isaiah Wood on Day 3. Freed from a must-start tackle search, Detroit can let the best player win the room. The vibe in Indianapolis points to edge and offensive line as the early pillars. Safety lingers as a swing factor. The first two rounds still look like edge and offensive line, with safety in the mix if the board breaks right. Safety Health Clouds the Secondary, Card-Ready at 17? Both leaders addressed the safeties' health. The update on Kerby was cautious. More will be known in about a month. The staff is probing his recovery and realistic timeline. It did not sound overly promising. Branch tore his Achilles late in the season. A return before the start seems unlikely, and peak form could take time in 2026. The defense felt that loss. When the NFL's interception leader went down with a knee injury, the secondary buckled and the unit needed weeks to adjust. That context keeps safety very live on Day 1 or 2. If Cam Dow is there at 17, the card goes in. Otherwise, Detroit can let a deep edge class meet a flexible tackle board and take what the NFL gives. One more steadying note from the Combine floor: the defensive coaching staff stays intact. Campbell is energized by that continuity. The Detroit Lions Podcast will have more as medicals and workouts reshape this board in real time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4OzHbLEbLDg #detroitlions #lions #detroitlionspodcast #taylordecker #bradholmes #dancampbell #nflscoutingcombine #lucasoilfield #offensivetackle #edgerusher #spencerfano #francismanu #caleblomu #monroefraley #isaiahwood #kirby #branchachilles #pick17 Learn more about your ad choices. Danny Rensch was born into a cult that weaponized chess for prestige. He's here to explain how he broke free on part one of this two-part episode.Full show notes and resources can be found here: jordanharbinger.com/1289What We Discuss with Danny Rensch:Cults don't always start with sinister blueprints. The Church of Immortal Consciousness where Danny Rensch was raised grew from self-help roots and communal idealism into full financial control — where members surrendered everything, kids shared bathwater, and the shoe list became a euphemism for "you don't matter enough to get a pair."The cult weaponized chess the same way the Soviet Union did — as a tool for prestige. Danny was identified as a prodigy, deliberately separated from his mother, and groomed as the collective's golden child. His talent wasn't nurtured for his sake — it was exploited for the cult leader's ego.By age 13, Danny was living alone, traveling to national chess tournaments with pockets full of cash and no adult supervision. The neglect wasn't just emotional — it was physical. Untreated swimmer's ear became severe infection, leaving him 60% deaf in one ear and 40% in the other.A drunk, defecting Soviet grandmaster named Igor Ivanov — who once fled the KGB during an emergency plane stop — became Danny's live-in chess coach. Igor had carte blanche to drink and do as he pleased, making him the cult's most functional dysfunction and Danny's unlikely lifeline to the wider chess world.Despite growing up as a high school dropout in a cult with no formal education, Danny became a successful writer and helped build Chess.com — proof that curiosity, baseline intelligence, and sheer determination can outrun even the most rigged starting hand. Motivated people can learn faster than any institution expects them to.And much more...And if you're still game to support us, please leave a review here — even one sentence helps! Another MA convicted murderer originally facing life without parole is set free after being parole eligible under MA's new ruling that emerging adults, those 18 to 20 at the time of the offense, could not be sentenced to life without the possibility of parole. Former Boston City Councilor Tania Fernandes Anderson's husband Tanzerious Anderson, who was convicted of murdering Imam Yazbek during a robbery at the age of 19, will be released. Is this fair? While the Parole Board in its decision said Anderson has addressed his need areas through several programs and deems him "compatible with the welfare of society", do you think his release is still warranted? We discussed in general MA's ruling on parole eligibility for emerging adults aged 18-20.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
This episode reflects on Ash Wednesday's call to recognize God as the sole Author of life and to confront the divided “double life” we often live—seeking approval from both God and the world. Sin fractures our identity, driving us to find worth in human praise rather than in God's grace, yet this striving ultimately fails. The good news is that we do not need to save ourselves: Christ has already borne our sin and restored true life through His death and resurrection, delivering that life through Baptism, forgiveness, and the Lord's Supper. Freed from the exhausting pursuit of validation, believers are invited to repentance and to receive a unified life in God's love, living consistently before both God and others as His forgiven children and reflecting His grace to the world.

Truths Inspiring Me About Confidence and Character — A Conversation with My Son Sometimes the most convicting spiritual lessons don't come from a sermon. They come from hearing a child say something honest— something simple— and realizing God is speaking through it. And as you listen to this conversation about habits, confidence, and walking with Jesus, you may feel that gentle nudge to return to what's true. Lean into that. Because your habits are always taking you somewhere. And the small choices you make today shape who you become tomorrow. You Don't Drift Into Confidence You might think confidence is a personality trait. Something you either have or you don't. But confidence is rarely about personality. It's about formation. It's about what you repeatedly do. When you build habits that align with truth — reading Scripture, practicing gratitude, caring for your body, choosing honesty — something steady begins forming inside of you. Not hype. Not ego. Not loud self-assertion. But quiet strength. And the opposite is also true. When you repeatedly avoid truth, bend honesty, indulge jealousy, or neglect your health, that forms something too. And eventually, that formation becomes your character. You don't wake up one day confident or insecure by accident. You drift there — one habit at a time. What You Feed Your Mind Shapes Your Identity If you only occasionally open your Bible, what fills the gap? Your worries. Your spouse's tone. Your insecurities. The voice in your head that says you're not enough. But when you consistently feed your mind the truth of Scripture, something changes. You begin to live from being cared for. Not striving for approval. Not grasping for validation. But anchored in being loved. You cannot feel confident if you don't believe you are deeply cared for. And that belief doesn't grow accidentally. It grows through repetition. Gratitude Rewires Your Perspective If you only focus on what you don't have, you will start to believe you have nothing. You will compare. You will resent. You will feel behind. And even when you do get what you wanted, it won't satisfy you — because comparison has already shaped your lens. But when you practice gratitude — intentionally naming what is good — you retrain your heart to see abundance. You begin to notice: God has been kind. God has provided. God has not left you alone. Gratitude doesn't ignore pain. It simply refuses to let pain define the whole story. And that builds stability. That builds joy. That builds confidence rooted in truth rather than circumstance. Your Body Matters More Than You Think You are not "just a soul." You are embodied. Jesus didn't come as a concept. He came in flesh. Your body is not accidental. It is not disposable. Scripture calls it a temple of the Holy Spirit. When you neglect your body — through constant exhaustion, poor nourishment, or silent self-criticism — you aren't just affecting your health. You are shaping how you see yourself. And when you care for your body — even in small ways — you are saying: "This matters. God's creation matters." Confidence grows when you respect what God has given you. Not in pride. But in stewardship. The Habit That Quietly Undermines Everything Let's talk about honesty. You may not consider yourself a liar. But do you exaggerate to seem more impressive? Withhold truth to avoid discomfort? Bend the story to protect your image? Lies feel small in the moment. But every time you tell one, something inside you weakens. Because you know the truth. Even if no one else does — you do. And when you repeatedly override your own integrity, you slowly erode your own confidence. You cannot feel strong while betraying yourself. Real confidence is inseparable from integrity. And integrity requires courage — especially when no one is watching. God Delights in Integrity Zephaniah says something stunning: "The LORD your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing." -Zephaniah 3:17 ESV But just before that, it speaks of a people who refuse deceit, who walk humbly, who seek the Lord. "Yes, I will punish those who participate in pagan worship ceremonies, and those who fill their masters' houses with violence and deceit." -Zephaniah 1:9 NLT God delights in truth. God delights in humility. God delights in integrity. Not because He is demanding perfection — but because integrity aligns you with how you were created to live. When you choose honesty. When you confess sin. When you turn from a habit that weakens you — even if you fail again tomorrow — you are stepping toward freedom. You are stepping toward formation. And God delights in that movement. You Are Not Stuck If you're listening and thinking: "I have bad habits." "I've let things slide." "I don't like who I've been becoming." Hear this clearly: You are not stuck. Habits can be unlearned. Patterns can be interrupted. Integrity can be rebuilt. Start small. Choose one habit. One verse. One act of gratitude. One moment of honesty. Repeat it. Push through the discomfort. Because the first time you choose differently, it will feel awkward. The fifth time, it will feel possible. The fiftieth time, it will feel like you. The Person You're Becoming You are always becoming someone. Not someday. Today. Your habits are forming the atmosphere of your home. Your habits are shaping your marriage. Your habits are influencing how your children see faith. Your habits are determining how you see yourself. So lean into that gentle nudge. Not with shame. But with resolve. You don't need dramatic reinvention. You need daily alignment. And when you choose small, faithful obedience — again and again — you will wake up one day and realize: You didn't just build better habits. You built stronger character. And from that character, real confidence grew. And that kind of confidence? It cannot be shaken. Send a textThe hardest stories rarely get told in the places that need them most. Susan Roggendorf and I open the door to how confidentiality truly works for police, fire, EMS, dispatchers, and medics—and why airtight boundaries are the backbone of real therapeutic change. No nods in public that out you, no name drops across departments, and no casual mentions that break trust. HIPAA is the law, but it is also a lived ethic that lets you speak freely without risking your reputation or your career. We get candid about the therapist–client relationship: professional, paid, and deeply human. It feels friendly at times because safety grows where pain is met with care. We talk about scheduling like chess to avoid back-to-back clients from the same team, navigating community run-ins, and letting clients choose whether to say hello or keep distance. Culture fit matters—dark humor, blunt talk, and straight answers help first responders feel seen. Sometimes the most therapeutic move is five minutes of sports talk to let your nervous system shift gears before you tackle the call you can't shake. We dig into vicarious trauma and why “talk to a friend” isn't enough. Friends can support you; therapists are trained to hear what is unsaid, track patterns over time, and offer clear choices: do you want support or solutions today? That simple question hands back control when so much of the job strips it away. We challenge the quiet shaming of help-seeking and argue for a culture that treats mental health like gear maintenance—nonnegotiable for readiness and longevity. If you've wondered whether a therapist will keep your confidence, or how therapy can actually work for your world, you'll hear real practices that protect privacy and deepen trust. Walk away with language to set boundaries, insight into how clinicians think, and a clearer path to care that respects the badge and the person behind it.To reach Susan, please go to https://psychhub.com/us/provider/susan-roggendorf/1316326036If this conversation helped, follow the show, share it with your crew, and leave a review so more first responders can find it. If you've listened to the previous two reset episodes from January, 2022, you know that I have issues with the expectations that American corporate leadership culture has placed upon pastors. Some fit easily within the roles defined for them, they become growth visionaries and ministry strategists. As my dad, a carpenter used to say, “they fit like they growed there.” But many of us don't fit. Not in the way we are supposed to. And that is okay. I want to free us from those expectations. But once freed, what then? In this episode I invite pastors to dream. Freed from the cultural expectations what might your vision, your real, deep, heartfelt vision for ministry be? That will be what will make your heart flourish in ministry. Let's consider that. We've arrived at the bitter end. Torie and returning special guests Chelsey Morin and Thien-Y Hoang make their final trip to the 50 shades of garbage dump searching for anything of substance in the final installment of this trash film trilogy. Alas, 50 SHADES FREED proves the third time is not the charm. Sulky sub Anastasia Steele and Dom daddy Christian Grey tie the knot (figuratively, not literally, this time). Their marital bliss is soon interrupted by Ana's former misogynist boss, Jack, and his desire for vengeance against Christian, which still doesn't make sense, as well as a certain unplanned you-know-what that drives a wedge between Ana and Christian, who proves, even after three insufferable movies, that he remains an unhinged, narcissistic a**hole. What ensues is two hours of blatant misogyny, buttplug pleasures, adventures on the Aspen club scene, painfully asinine car chases, a kidnapping of Rita Ora, a profoundly obnoxious performance of ”Maybe I'm Amazed,” and the confounding absence of a prenup. And through it all, like some absurd monument to early 00s mallboi masculinity, are Christian's cherished pair of Hollister Men's jeans.

Speaker: Brent Kercheville. The prophecy of Jeremiah has been a book of failure. As we come to the end of our study of Jeremiah we are taking a moment to look back at the failure of the people of Judah. They have traded the Lord for things that are not gods (Jeremiah 2:10-11). Hidden Killers With Tony Brueski | True Crime News & Commentary
In 2004, David Carmichael crushed sleeping pills into his 11-year-old son's orange juice and strangled him to death. He planned it. He researched murder sentences. He expected prison. Two years later, he walked free. The reason? A legal test written in 1843 called the M'Naghten Rule—the same test that will likely determine Nick Reiner's fate.Nick Reiner is charged with murdering his parents, director Rob Reiner and philanthropist Michele Singer Reiner, in their Brentwood home. He reportedly admits to the killings but believes his incarceration is a conspiracy against him. His medication for schizoaffective disorder was changed approximately one month before the alleged murders. His defense attorney just withdrew from the case. He's now represented by a public defender. The M'Naghten Rule asks two questions: Did the defendant understand the nature and quality of the act? Did they know it was wrong? You only need to fail one test. Carmichael couldn't claim he didn't know killing was wrong—he planned for prison. But he succeeded on nature and quality because his delusion changed what he believed he was doing. He thought he was ending his son's suffering, not murdering a healthy child.Nick Reiner's post-offense behavior—checking into a hotel, navigating Los Angeles for 24 hours—suggests he knew something was wrong. That kills prong two. But can he argue his perception was so distorted he didn't understand the true nature of the act? That's the question. And the answer depends on what delusion, if any, distorted his reality that night.A rule from 1843 is about to collide with modern psychiatry. The outcome will determine whether Nick Reiner faces death row or a psychiatric facility.#NickReiner #RobReiner #InsanityDefense #MNaghtenRule #DavidCarmichael #HiddenKillers #TrueCrime #BrentwoodMurders #MentalHealth #CriminalJusticeJoin Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISDOES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? David Carmichael strangled his 11-year-old son to death in 2004 after planning the killing, researching murder charges, and expecting decades in prison. The verdict? Not criminally responsible. He walked out of a psychiatric facility after about two years. The reason he's free today could be the same reason Nick Reiner avoids the death penalty—if anyone believes him.The TMZ documentary on the Reiner murders explicitly cited the legal standard that saved Carmichael. Under the M'Naghten rule used in California, the insanity defense doesn't require proving you didn't know right from wrong. It only requires proving you didn't understand the "nature and quality" of your actions. Carmichael knew killing was illegal—but in his psychotic state triggered by Paxil, he believed he was saving his son from suffering. The delusion changed what he thought he was doing.Nick Reiner's schizoaffective disorder medication was reportedly changed one month before the alleged murders after he complained about weight gain. Sources say the change destabilized him profoundly. He now reportedly admits killing his parents but believes his incarceration is a conspiracy against him. Same framework. Same legal standard. But the differences matter. Carmichael had no history of manipulation—Nick has 30 years of it. Carmichael didn't flee—Nick reportedly checked into a hotel and navigated LA for over 24 hours. The defense that freed Carmichael requires credibility. After a lifetime of gaming every system he's encountered, does Nick Reiner have any left?#NickReiner #RobReiner #DavidCarmichael #InsanityDefense #TrueCrimeToday #ReinerMurders #MNaghten #CaliforniaLaw #MentalHealth #TrueCrimeJoin Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISDOES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Hidden Killers With Tony Brueski | True Crime News & Commentary
Two men killed family members. One walked free after two years in a psychiatric facility. The other is sitting in a Los Angeles jail right now, facing the death penalty. The legal standard that saved the first could theoretically save the second. Tony Brueski breaks down the case that could define Nick Reiner's defense strategy.David Carmichael killed his 11-year-old son Ian in a London, Ontario hotel room in 2004. He'd researched murder charges. He expected prison. He planned the whole thing. But both prosecution and defense psychiatrists agreed—Carmichael was in a psychotic state triggered by the antidepressant Paxil. He believed his healthy son was brain-damaged and suffering. In his mind, he wasn't committing murder. He was ending suffering. Under the M'Naghten rule, he didn't understand the "nature and quality" of his actions. Verdict: not criminally responsible.California uses the same legal standard. Nick Reiner's medication was reportedly changed one month before he allegedly stabbed his parents to death. Sources say he admits to the killings but believes his incarceration is a conspiracy. The same defense could apply. But Carmichael had no history of manipulation. Nick has 30 years of it—18-plus rehab facilities, a lifetime of gaming systems. Carmichael didn't flee. Nick reportedly checked into a hotel and spent 24 hours moving through Los Angeles. The precedent exists. The legal pathway exists.
