Send us a textWhat happens when a police officer and a counselor not only share their professional expertise but also their marriage journey? In this candid, powerful conversation, Ashley and Dustin Wright bring a unique dual perspective to the challenges facing first responder marriages.Marriage requires resilience for everyone, but for those in law enforcement, the stakes are particularly high. "Resiliency in law enforcement is super important," explains Dustin, "because we're going to have troubles, struggles, and we need to bounce back pretty quickly." With divorce rates among first responders reaching a staggering 60-75%, the Wrights share practical strategies that have helped them navigate both professional pressures and relationship challenges. The conversation delves into several crucial aspects of relationship health: the importance of preparing emotionally before crises hit, distinguishing between having a safe partner and using them as an emotional dumping ground, and extending grace to partners who witness society's darkest moments. Ashley offers particularly valuable insights for first responder spouses: "We do not realize the amount of images, sounds, smells, things that they're taking in on a regular basis," she explains, highlighting why intentional communication and decompression time are essential.Perhaps most compelling is their discussion about supporting each other's growth journeys. When one partner embraces therapy or spiritual development, the other can misinterpret this as abandonment rather than opportunity. "How do we partner in that," Ashley asks, "rather than feeling insecure or putting the other person down?" Their answers provide a roadmap for couples facing similar challenges.Ready to strengthen your relationship while navigating the unique demands of first responder life? Listen now for insights that could transform your connection and build resilience that lasts through even the most challenging circumstances.Freed.ai: We'll Do Your SOAP Notes!Freed AI converts conversations into SOAP note.Use code Steve50 for $50 off the 1st month!Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. Chris Cerci was born in Brockton, Massachusetts. Tragically, at age 3, Chris lost his father due to suicide. When Chris turned 7, his surviving family moved to Florida. Years later he moved with his family to Pittsburgh, PA where he also currently resides. Seeking employment, Chris began working as a firefighter with the McKeesport Fire Department. While he performed well, he nonetheless struggled with PTSD that he attempted to suppress through the use of alcohol and drugs, an addiction that lasted forty years. But, by God's grace, Chris finally and miraculously overcame his struggle about two years ago. While he is now retired from his firefighting work, Chris currently runs a small tree business that he started almost 10 years ago. But his current overwhelming passion is to get the life-giving message he has learned about God's amazing power and love out to the many who continue to suffer with hopelessness. In this podcast, Chris shares the painful struggles of his life that prompted him to find temporary escape in his drinking and drugging addiction. Despite repeated times in treatment facilities, Chris would ultimately relapse again into nonstop drinking that would result in total despair and bring much pain to his marriage, his family, and to his own life. But, about two years ago, following a serious motorcycle accident, God did an amazing miracle in Chris's life that he emotionally shares with us. While he continues to pursue AA meetings, Chris no longer has any desire for alcohol or drugs. Finally, near the end of the podcast, Chris shares a very cute story of how he met my dear wife Marcia at Planet Fitness that ultimately resulted in us doing this podcast.

Send us a textWhat happens when a first responder walks into a therapist's office and shares a traumatic experience so dark that the therapist needs "a few minutes" before responding? For most first responders, this confirms their worst fear: no one can handle their reality. That's why cultural competency isn't just helpful—it's essential. In this powerful conversation with the founding members of "Behind the Badge and Beyond," we explore the critical importance of specialized mental health care for those who serve our communities. Lisa Knowles, Richard Winning, Erin Sheridan, Alexa Silva, Jennifer Waldron, and host Steve Bisson bring decades of combined experience working with police officers, firefighters, EMTs, correctional officers, and military personnel. The group unpacks what makes first responder therapy uniquely challenging—like the profound emotional numbing that protects on the job but destroys relationships at home, the grief that gets misinterpreted as burnout, and the resistance to vulnerability that requires extraordinary patience from clinicians. They share stories of connecting with clients through dark humor, specialized knowledge, and authentic relationship-building that creates safety for those who protect us daily.Whether you're a first responder seeking help, a family member trying to understand, or a clinician wanting to better serve this population, this conversation offers invaluable insights into creating genuine healing spaces for those who witness trauma daily. The message is clear: first responders deserve therapists who speak their language, understand their culture, and can sit comfortably with their darkest experiences without flinching.Ready to find a culturally competent therapist or learn more about specialized mental health support for first responders? Send us a textTurning fifty isn't just about crossing an age threshold—it's about recognizing the human connections that build resilience throughout a lifetime. In this deeply personal episode, therapist Steve Bisson reflects on the relationships that have shaped his capacity for strength, growth, and recovery across five decades.Steve begins by honoring his parents, whose contrasting yet complementary influences established his foundation. His father, who lacked a paternal role model yet became an exceptional dad himself, taught Steve about honesty and critical thinking. His mother—a glass-ceiling breaker before the term existed—demonstrated determination through her 47-year career and instilled feminist principles that continue to guide Steve's professional approach. Together, they exemplified loyalty, work ethic, and perseverance that became cornerstones of his resilience framework. The episode takes listeners through Steve's "Three Musketeers" friendship with Joce and Frank—a bond spanning 38 years that has weathered countless challenges. Through emotional storytelling, Steve reveals how these lifelong connections, along with other key friendships, professional relationships, and even his therapy clients, have collectively taught him different aspects of resilience. Perhaps most touching is his tribute to his teenage daughters, who continue to teach him patience, emotional expression, and growth even as they navigate their own challenges.Steve's resilience journey illuminates how our capacity to overcome obstacles isn't built in isolation but through meaningful connections that sustain us. Whether you're approaching a milestone birthday, reflecting on your support network, or simply curious about the human factors behind emotional strength, this episode offers valuable insights into how relationships shape our ability to navigate life's inevitable challenges. Episode 250: Freed from SinIn this compelling episode, we're invited to ponder the profound relationship between Christians and sin, bringing a deeper understanding of our redemption in Christ. The key scriptural focus from Romans 6 addresses whether we should continue sinning so that grace may abound. The answer is a resounding 'By no means!' This scripture reminds us that through Jesus' death and resurrection, we've died to sin and are reborn to live a new life characterized by righteousness. We're challenged to reflect on our own lives: do we genuinely live in the victory over sin that Jesus has won for us, or do we fall into antinomian beliefs, where grace is misconstrued as a license to sin? This episode emphasizes the importance of a transformational experience that accompanies true salvation, urging us to examine whether we've experienced the radical change of heart that marks true believers. The teaching inspires us to explore this transformation, embrace our new identity in Christ, and reject the flippancy toward sin that hinders our faith journey.

Guest: Matthew Freed Guest Bio: I've spent the last 20 years in sales and sales leadership, and I still find it incredibly rewarding. Most of that time has been in manufacturing and distribution, where I've had the opportunity to lead high-performing teams and work closely with customers. I currently lead a team across the Midwest and am passionate about building lasting culture, driving results, and simplifying the complicated. A big part of my leadership style is helping sellers achieve their goals while supporting them in becoming the best versions of themselves. I believe consistent habits lead to consistent outcomes, and I aim to lead with energy, clarity, and accountability. I enjoy helping people grow in their careers while building meaningful, long-term relationships with customers and colleagues. Outside of work, I still love to compete—whether it's on the basketball court or just a backyard game with friends. Most importantly, I enjoy time with my wife and our two daughters. Key Points: Career Journey & Sales Background His dad was in sales and eventually owned a business, which influenced him early. Matthew started with cold calling and door-to-door efforts, learning what real sales was versus the perception. Naturally gravitated toward leadership roles on teams; wanted to shift from individual sales to team success. Moved cities and took a risk to lead a sales team at a manufacturing company, eventually growing in responsibility and geography. He was introduced to Millcraft by a supplier contact and joined over 8 years ago; currently leads sales efforts after transitioning from operational responsibilities. Sales Philosophy & Simplifying Complexity Believes the sales team is his "customers" and supports them by removing obstacles and improving processes. Matthew uses what he calls a "Simplify the Complicated" Approach: · Sales fundamentals (know, like, trust) are still the core, despite evolving technology. · Use data and analytics to validate feelings and drive decisions. · Focus on what matters: simplify systems/processes to let sellers focus on selling. Challenges in Sales Leadership Reps often react emotionally, inventing stories about prospects. Ask clarifying questions, do a fact-finding mission, and use both data and instinct (e.g., the "sleep on it" approach). Helps reps stay grounded by focusing on facts and controllables rather than assumptions. CRM/ERP Adoption Success Successfully implemented a new ERP system that includes a CRM. Tailored the system to serve salespeople and their customers. Positioned CRM is used as a way to better serve customers and make smarter decisions. Gained buy-in by connecting usage to outcomes (e.g., customer satisfaction). Has most of his team (12 people) consistently using the CRM. Team Composition & Hiring A mix of new and long-tenured reps (some with 30–40+ years of experience). Has a team size of 12 sellers. What He Looks for in Hires is resourcefulness, values competitiveness, entrepreneurial spirit, and inquisitiveness. Matthew's screening methods are assignments before interviews, looking for how much effort candidates put into research, a sports background is a strong signal (discipline, competition), and relying heavily on referrals. Team Wins & New Business Growth - 150+ New Accounts Opened Focused efforts in specific industry segments (e.g., beverage, signage, apparel, nonprofits). Leverages repeatable success models: if one nonprofit buys certain items, others likely will too. Emphasizes selling similar things to similar customers vs. reinventing every sale. Segment-focused selling allows for scalable, repeatable growth strategies. Leadership Style & Values Clearly outlines what reps should expect from him and vice versa. Believes in accountability, honesty, and mutual respect. Sees his role as equipping and clearing the path for his team's success. Encourages feedback and builds relationships rooted in trust. Send us a textGordon Brewer, a licensed marriage and family therapist with over 25 years of experience, joins Steve to unpack the complex relationship between trauma, grief, and emotional resilience in the first responder community. Their conversation touches on a critical but often overlooked barrier to mental health care—the fear that therapists can't handle the horrific realities first responders face daily."Sometimes people forget about how trauma manifests in different ways," Gordon explains, sharing how his background as a funeral director gave him unique insights into grief processing. Both experts explore why first responders might test their therapists by sharing graphic details, essentially asking: "Can you handle my reality?"The discussion delves into the subtle yet important distinctions between grief and trauma. For first responders who regularly encounter death, these experiences can trigger complex emotional responses, especially when they've previously tried to help someone who ultimately died. This creates layers of grief beyond the immediate situation—grief for what couldn't be prevented and the weight of perceived failure.A fascinating segment explores emotional intelligence within first responder culture. "Anger is acceptable, happiness is acceptable, the rest of it not so much," Steve notes, highlighting how limited emotional expression can prevent proper processing. Gordon adds that understanding your internal emotional landscape doesn't require displaying vulnerability publicly, but acknowledging emotions privately is essential for preventing acute stress from becoming trauma.Drawing from Brené Brown's work, they explore how vulnerability forms the foundation of courage—a seeming paradox particularly relevant for first responders. "You cannot have courage without vulnerability," Gordon emphasizes. "Just because we do the job doesn't negate the fact that we had those feelings of fear."Perhaps most powerfully, they discuss how community support facilitates healing. Gordon shares personal insights from losing his wife to cancer, illustrating how simple presence often matters more than words. They note how first responder communities excel at immediate support but often disappear after a few weeks, leaving families to navigate ongoing grief alone.Join this authentic conversation that bridges professional expertise with personal experience, offering practical wisdom for anyone navigating trauma, supporting others through grief, or seeking to build greater emotional resilience in challenging circumstances.Freed.ai: We'll Do Your SOAP Notes!Freed AI converts conversations into SOAP note.Use code Steve50 for $50 off the 1st month!Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. You might know actor Tim Pocock from his roles in Dance Academy or X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Even as a child, he graced the Sydney Opera House starring in operas directed by Baz Lurhman. But that world of artistic expression was in stark contrast to the other world Tim was part of for so long - one of repression by conservative catholicism under Opus Dei - made all the worse as he began to realise who he truly was. In this chat, Tim reveals his experiences of shame, bullying and conversion therapy, as well as his journey toward healing, discovery and self-acceptance, and the ongoing work of undoing the trauma of the beliefs that kept him feeling trapped for so long. An inspiration for anyone who’s ever felt silenced or lived an inauthentic life, an insight into certain pockets of religious institutions and a vital plea for the parents of every LGBTIAQ+ child. Send us a textWhat happens when your career ends but your life continues? The Mental Men, Andy Kang, Pat Rice, Chris Gordon, Dennis Sweeney, and Bob Cherney return in this deeply personal exploration of retirement, identity, and finding purpose beyond the job that defined you.Bob Cherney, recently retired after decades as a therapist, shares his raw experience of waking up each morning still feeling "there's supposed to be stuff I'm supposed to do." This sentiment resonates powerfully with the group of mental health professionals who've dedicated their lives to helping others through crisis and trauma. Their conversation reveals the unexpected challenges of this transition – from the alarming statistic that 20% of first responders develop serious medical conditions within a year of retirement to the profound identity crisis that can follow when the uniform comes off.The discussion delves into how retirement resembles a grief process – mourning not just the job itself but a way of being in the world. As Dennis reflects, it requires "acceptance of what we can or cannot do" while acknowledging "the grief of what you've lost." For professionals accustomed to emergency response and crisis intervention, the absence of that adrenaline and purpose creates a void that requires intentional filling.Yet within these challenges lie opportunities for growth. The group shares strategies that have helped them navigate this transition: developing hobbies before retirement, volunteering in new contexts, maintaining social connections, and perhaps most importantly – staying curious. As Pat beautifully puts it, "The Fountain of Youth is composed of two elements: keep your legs as strong as you can and stay curious." This curiosity – this willingness to try new things and engage with life in fresh ways – emerges as perhaps the most powerful tool for navigating life's later chapters.Whether you're approaching retirement, supporting someone who is, or simply interested in how we maintain purpose and meaning throughout life's transitions, this conversation offers wisdom, humor, and practical insights from those walking the path. Join us for this powerful exploration of what it means to redefine yourself when the career that shaped your identity comes to an end.Freed.ai: We'll Do Your SOAP Notes!Freed AI converts conversations into SOAP note.Use code Steve50 for $50 off the 1st month!Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links.
