Tim Harford investigates some of the numbers in the news. This week:(00:32) The internet is abuzz with the claim that twenty-seven young migrants are hired for every British young person. We explore the truth behind this misleading claim. (08:40) Last year two nerds made a bet on our programme. Those nerds are Substacker Sam Freedman and Maxwell Marlow from the Adam Smith Institute, and they were betting on how the government's introduction of VAT on school fees would affect pupil numbers. The results are in… (16:10) We revisit the topic of Welsh literacy after a raft of questions from loyal listeners. Could dual-language teaching explain Wales' poor reading scores? Bryan Stevenson has spent years fighting for people on death row and juveniles sentenced to life in prison. Today, he continues that legal work, and on a recent visit to Boston, he sat down with a man released from prison because of Stevenson's case before the Supreme Court, which found life without parole for young offenders unconstitutional.
At least 360 abductees were rescued by the Nigerian army from an enclave linked to a terrorist group in northeastern Borno State. Most of them being women and children. While the Nigerian Army says the rescue followed weeks of planning and intelligence-led operations that achieved "complete tactical surprise," overwhelming the terrorists and forcing them to abandon their positions and flee into the surrounding mountainous terrain, a different account has emerged. A local group, the Borno South Youth Alliance (BOSAYA) says that it facilitated the unconditional release of the abductees and had been in contact with the militants, while online conversations speculate negotiations and possible ransom. We hear from a security expert. And a Rwandan genocide survivor Sabin Nkusi shares how her experiences have driven her commitment to supporting survivors of sexual and gender-based violence. On the afternoon of July 18, 1984, James Huberty left his apartment in the San Ysidro neighborhood of San Diego, California, and drove one block over to the nearby McDonalds. After walking through the door of the restaurant, Huberty raised his Uzi semi-automatic 9mm and began indiscriminately shooting at patrons, employees, and anyone else who happened to cross into his line of sight. At the time, and for decades after, the San Ysidro McDonalds massacre was the worst mass shooting in American history, with the shooter killing twenty-one people and injuring nearly two dozen others before being struck down by a sniper's bullet. The incident lasted over an hour, during which time San Diego police and SWAT members surrounded the building, but didn't enter the building until an hour after the shooting started, when Huberty was already dead. This week, Pastor Tim Brown continued our FREED series with a sermon on unforgiveness—what he called one of the most ignored sources of bondage in the Church today. Drawing from Matthew 18, Pastor Tim explored why forgiveness is so difficult, how bitterness quietly takes root in our lives, and why Jesus speaks about forgiveness with such urgency. Through the parable of the unforgiving servant, he showed that forgiveness is not minimizing an offense, but absorbing the debt, humanizing the offender, and releasing them. The invitation of Jesus is clear: unforgiveness imprisons us, but forgiveness opens the door to freedom.
Borno Youths Insist Govt, Army Did Nothing, 416 Women, Kids Freed Willinglyhttps://osazuwaakonedo.news/borno-youths-insist-govt-army-did-nothing-416-women-kids-freed-willingly/#AFN #army #Borno #BOSYA #Ngoshe #Gwoza #Maiduguri #Tinubu Youths in Borno State under the umbrella body of Borno South Youth Alliance, BOSYA has insisted that the Federal Government of Nigeria under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu did nothing to secure the release of the 416 women and children held hostage by Boko Haram terrorists for more than 90 days they were taken into the bush since March 2026, also, the youth group dismissed and rejected the report of the Nigerian Army who had alleged that its men rescued 360 out of the 416 people held hostage through intelligent driven efforts, saying, they have an audio record of the conversation they had with the Boko Haram terrorists on Friday June 5th, 2026 before the Boko Haram terrorists decided to release the captives willingly, adding, "If they paid ransom, they should come out and tell Nigerians, which we have the full details if ransoms was paid or not, as Senator Ali Ndume automatically started thanking President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is there something Nigerians Need to know that is Hidden", it maybe recalled that we have reported that barely a day after President Donald Trump of the United States of America, the USA announced the killing of Abu Bilal al-Minuki, the second in command of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, ISIS in a joint operation with Nigeria soldiers in Borno State, a new video of the abducted 416 women and children in Boko Haram captivity has been released in addition to a gory video earlier released by the terrorists wherein they beheaded almost six men who the insurgents said tried to escape among the kidnapped victims, this had led to public outcry and demonstrations, but according to Punch Newspaper, protesters are reportedly denied the rights to protest in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, saying, the Army reportedly deployed tanks and heavily armed personnel to Filling Polo, the venue of the recent planned protest, forcing the demonstrators to withdraw, quoting Samaila Kaigama, leader of the protesters, as saying; the atmosphere created by the military deployment made it impossible for citizens to continue with the demonstration, that the development is deeply disturbing in a constitutional democracy, it may also be recalled that we had reported that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria may have kept mute since more than 48 hours a faction of the Boko Haram terrorists showed off 416 people mostly women and children kidnapped and held hostage when the members of the Jama'atu Ahlis-Sunna Lidda'Awati Wal-Jihad, JAS, launched a large scale combat actions between 4th to 6th March 2026 against the men of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, AFN, overran the Africa country military base at Ngoshe, killing several soldiers, a figure the Nigeria authority disputed to be 14 after several reports indicated that more than 40 soldiers were killed during the attack, in addition to more than 100 civilians including Chief Iman of Ngoshe alongside the community elders killed during the coordinated attacks that lasted days at Ngoshe community in Gwoza local government area of Borno state, this, during the attacks, numbers of people were also taken hostage by the insurgents, with speculations indicating that the hostages are apparently being held at the rugged terrain of the Mandara Mountains, which sit wide across the Nigeria border with Cameroon, in the released video, one of the spokespersons of the Boko Haram group said they decided to release a proof of life video of the 416 women and children in their captivity, following the demands made across to them by the Borno South Youths Alliance, BOSYA, and according to the statement issued by the BOSYA when they made the video public on Friday April 10, 2026, the Youths group called on Federal Government and governments at all level to ensure the hostages are released, saying specifically that; "we have witnessed cases in states such as Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, and Kebbi where abducted victims regained freedom following interventions by individuals such as Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, we therefore expect equal urgency and commitment in addressing the plight of the Ngoshe victims, no region or group of citizens should be treated with less priority". #OsazuwaAkonedoBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/osazuwaakonedo--4980924/support.Kindly support us for more productivity and efficiency in news delivery.Visit our donation page: DonateYou can also use our Mobile app for more news in different formats: CLICK TO DOWNDLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY STORE

The following morning, Moxley's badly beaten body was discovered underneath a tree, just a few hundred feet from her house, triggering one of the most notorious murder mysteries in the state's history. Send us Fan MailA call can end, the scene can clear, and your body can still be on the call months later. We sit down with clinical psychologist Dr. Stacy Raymond to talk about what actually works for first responder mental health when the job leaves you with nightmares, intrusive images, a short fuse, and sleep that never fully comes back. We also dig into why the “tough it out” culture quietly pushes people toward avoidance and alcohol instead of recovery. We get practical about EMDR therapy (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and how it's used with police officers, firefighters, EMS, dispatchers, corrections, and veterans. Stacy breaks down bilateral stimulation methods like eye movements, handheld tappers, and alternating tones, and we clear up common misconceptions, including the fear that EMDR is “electroshock” or that you must retell every detail of your worst call. We also talk about the clinical guardrails that matter: a real intake, readiness, and careful screening for alcohol misuse or prescription medication abuse so the work stays safe and the gains stick. We zoom out to the bigger story: ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences) and why higher ACE scores can raise risk for operational stress injuries, plus how peer support and confidentiality shape whether people ever feel safe enough to get help. The takeaway we want you to hold onto is tactical: treat acute stress early, protect your sleep, and keep your brain mission-ready without carrying the call forever. If you're in a mental health crisis, call 988 for assistance in the United States and Canada. To reach Stacy, please go to her website: https://www.drstacyraymond.com/Her Instagram is https://www.instagram.com/stacyshrink1414/You can buy her book hereSubscribe, share this with someone on your shift, and leave a review so more first responders can find real trauma tools that work.Freed.ai: We'll Do Your SOAP Notes!Freed AI converts conversations into SOAP note.Use code Steve50 for $50 off the 1st month!Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. Episode 5412: Tina Peters FREED; Fighting Fire With Fire
This week, Pastor Sam Gibson continued our FREED series with a sermon on rejection—opening by admitting he couldn't promise freedom from it. Rejection is inevitable. The real question is whether it will deform you or transform you. Pastor Sam unpacked the snare of recognition as rejection's dangerous shadow side, walked through the Greco-Roman context of adoption in Romans 8, and landed on this: in Christ, we are not rescued strays but chosen heirs—named, inheritance transferred, legally irrevocable. That is the spirit of adoption available to us, and it is what sets us free.
In this episode of the Alan Mead Experience, Alan faces down a long-hidden clinical shortcoming: his "shame drawer" of inadequate patient charting. Transitioning from a clunky paper-digital hybrid system, Alan discusses how AI-driven dictation and medical scribes are revolutionizing clinical documentation by delivering flawless, detailed notes in a fraction of the time. From discussing the legal and ethical obligations of patient privacy and Business Associate Agreements (BAAs) to confronting the psychological hurdles of the "avoidance loop" in dentistry, this episode is a candid look at overcoming the friction of change. Along the way, Alan shares updates on his upcoming high school band trip to Disney World, thoughts on creepy new AI video avatars, and a reminder of why we should probably all just use the rubber dam more often. Most women who struggle with binge eating never talk about it. I'm changing that today. In this episode, I get personal about my own journey with binge eating, tracing it back to my early twenties and walking through the slow, nonlinear process of working through it over the past decade. This is not a quick fix episode. There is no finish line moment, no single breakthrough that made it all click. What there is, is an honest look at what actually moved the needle over time. I break down the three things that made the biggest difference in my healing: releasing the good food and bad food rules that were quietly running the show, going through a functional reverse diet to address what was happening on a physiological level, and reframing the stories I was telling myself after a binge episode. I also dig into something that does not get talked about enough, which is how your body's overall toxic load and sensitivity to certain foods can actually reinforce disordered eating patterns without you even realizing it. If you have ever felt completely out of control around food, finished a vacation feeling more guilt than joy, or wondered if you will ever stop the restrict and binge cycle, this episode is for you. May 24th | Freedom | Galatians 5:13-15 & 6:1-5In this message from Galatians 5:13–15 and 6:1–5, Ben Lofton explores what it means to live in the freedom Christ has given us. While believers have been set free from the burden of earning righteousness through performance, Christian freedom is not a license for self-centered living. Instead, we are freed to follow Jesus by willingly taking on His yoke—a life marked by love, humility, and service.Ben unpacks Paul's warning against using freedom as an opportunity for the flesh and shows how true freedom is expressed through serving others, pursuing restoration rather than condemnation, and walking in humble submission rather than prideful comparison. Through practical teaching and personal testimony, this message highlights how gospel-centered community helps believers bear one another's burdens and grow in Christ together.Whether you're wrestling with legalism, isolation, or the challenge of living out your faith in community, this message offers a biblical picture of what it looks like to stand firm in the freedom Christ has secured for His people.
May 31st, 2026 | Freedom | Galatians 5:13-15What comes next after freedom? In this message, Peyton Coker walks through Galatians 5:13–15 and 6:1–5, exploring what it means to live in the freedom Christ purchased for us. Many believers understand what it means to be freed from sin, but struggle to know what comes next. Too often, freedom becomes apathy, isolation, or self-centered living.Paul reminds us that we have been called to something greater. We are freed to serve selflessly, not ourselves. Freed to restore gently, not criticize or condemn. Freed to walk humbly, not compare, compete, or live from pride.Through practical application, powerful illustrations, and a clear gospel focus, Peyton shows how true freedom flourishes in godly community. As we bear one another's burdens, pursue restoration with gentleness, and walk in humility, we reflect the heart of Christ and fulfill the law of love.Whether you're feeling stuck, distracted, or simply wondering what faithful Christian living looks like, this message will encourage you to step into the purpose for which Christ set you free.Join us as we discover what comes next: a life of selfless service, gentle restoration, and humble dependence on Jesus. This message is designed to help the Kilgore campus experience God's manifest presence and His ever-restoring life.
Aidan Sims reminded us that true happiness and flourishing are found in Jesus and His kingdom. Through the Beatitudes, Jesus invites us into a life marked by humility, mercy, righteousness, and peace, not as a burden, but as the beautiful way of life He created us for. As the perfect embodiment of these virtues, Jesus shows us what true humanity looks like and graciously empowers us to follow Him, finding blessing, freedom, and joy in His kingdom.

This week, Pastor Jon preached from John 7:53–8:11, using the story of the woman caught in adultery and dragged into the temple courts before a crowd with stones as his text for the freedom Jesus offers us from shame. He pushed back on the typical cultural responses to shame—the "you're worthy" or "do better" responses. Neither reaches the place where shame actually lives. He walked through the honor-shame architecture of first-century Jewish culture to show what Jesus was subverting every time He ate with tax collectors, touched lepers, and stopped for the people everyone else walked past. Jesus coming to deal with our shame was a central theme to His ministry. From the animal skins God fashioned for Adam and Eve to the white robes of the saints in Revelation, Scripture traces an important story—God clothing the naked and the shamed in righteousness and glory. That is what Jesus came to do. That freedom is available today.

This Sunday Pastor Reagan Griffith continues our FREED series with a teaching on freedom from anxiety. Drawing from Matthew 6:25-34 and Philippians 4:6-7, Reagan identifies the roots of anxiety within lies and the cycle this creates. As New Yorkers we may feel exempt from this freedom, but God calls us to be free and empowers us to "not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God." By embracing this truth that anxiety has no place in our lives, as followers of Jesus, "the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

In Romans 7:1-6, Paul continues his letter by showing us that freedom in Christ goes even deeper than being dead to sin... we have also been released from the law's grip. Many Christians live as if God's love rises and falls with their spiritual performance, turning faith into a checklist of fear and obligation. But Paul reminds us that through the death of Christ, our old relationship to condemnation is over. We now belong to the risen Jesus, not as people trying to earn love, but as people already held by it. This kind of freedom does not lower the standard; it changes the engine. Instead of serving God through fear, we are invited to live in the newness of the Spirit, bearing fruit from love, belonging, and grace.Connect with us!Missioncity.church

When Y-STR DNA testing revealed that the genetic material at the yogurt shop crime scene belonged to an unknown male — excluding all four accused men and over 130 other tested individuals — it should have been the end. Instead, it was the beginning of a 17-year limbo. Travis County DA Rosemary Lehmberg dismissed the charges against Springsteen and Scott in 2009 but issued a public statement affirming her belief in their guilt. No exoneration. No declaration of innocence. Just a release with conditions and a public accusation that followed these men for nearly two decades. The human toll extended beyond the courtroom. Michael Scott's marriage dissolved during incarceration. Maurice Pierce, who entered the system at 15 and spent three years jailed without trial, was fatally shot by Austin police during a 2010 confrontation at age 34. Forrest Welborn, never indicted despite being charged, lived under the weight of the accusation for over 25 years.Part 4 examines the period between release and exoneration — a phase of wrongful conviction cases that receives insufficient attention in criminal justice analysis. The formal declaration of innocence came in February 2026. For some, it came too late.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? This week, Pastor Ralph Castillo continued the FREED series with a teaching on freedom from idolatry. Drawing from Jeremiah 2, Pastor Ralph traces God's grief over a people who abandoned Him for lesser things. The passage is startling in its intimacy. God isn't issuing a legal verdict, He's asking a relational question. "What happened between us?" He speaks in the language of a wounded covenant, the devotion of youth, the love of a bride. Idolatry, in God's framing, isn't just disobedience, it's betrayal. The quickest route into it is simply forgetting who God is and what He's done. The text calls us to respond to idolatry the way God does, appalled, heartbroken, undone. Jeremiah 2:13 gives us the clearest picture of why. God is a fountain of living water, and our idols are cracked cisterns that can barely hold what they promise. The sermon concludes by saying that in God's wrath, He remembers mercy. Like the father in Luke 15, He doesn't wait for us to close the whole distance, He runs.
