We said goodbye to Jane Goodall, who passed away yesterday at 91 after a life that inspired millions. I feel so grateful to have had the chance to speak with her back in July 2022, a conversation I'll never forget. Today, in honour of her incredible legacy, I want to re-share it with you. ___________________________________________________________________ The legendary Jane Goodall is a scientist, conservationist and humanitarian, whose 60-year study of wild chimpanzees in Tanzania challenged and overturned much of the conventional scientific thinking at the time. Her tireless work over the years - she is now 88 - has won her a legion of admirers, including David Attenborough, Leonardo di Caprio, Prince Harry and Greta Thunberg who calls Goodall ‘a true hero'. Ernest Lee Davis, a native of Los Angeles, California, spent most of his life there before earning an athletic scholarship to the University of Idaho, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Communications. He earned his MBA from Western Governors University and will finish his Doctorate in Philosophy of Leadership with an emphasis on Servant-Leadership from Gonzaga University this year. Ernest has worked as a finish manager/leader in the aerospace industry for over 15 years at Skills Inc., a nonprofit organization that partners with The Boeing Company. He has dedicated his career to creating meaningful opportunities for persons with disabilities and other marginalized groups, encouraging an inclusive and diverse workforce. A devoted follower of Jesus Christ, Ernest joined the Church in 2005 and is committed to living the Savior's teachings and sharing his personal story of resilience. Our teacher today is Steve Mandel, founder of Lone Pine Capital, one of the defining investment firms of our time. For starters, Steve is, without question, among the most important leaders in the investment management industry. Consider that Seth Klarman once called him, “the best industry analyst I've ever met, who became the best long short hedge fund manager of his generation.” In our opinion, the magic of Lone Pine resides in the principles that form its foundation and the people that animate its culture. But to understand the organization, you really need to first understand its master builder, a man of unusual integrity whose reputation across every dimension of his life and at every chapter of his life is so consistent and compelling when it comes to investing. Steve has an infectious Buffett-like love for the craft, and he's someone who seems more rooted in an orientation of service than any investor we've ever met. And one of the great paradoxes of this story is that from day one, Steve deliberately architected Lone Pine so that it would always be about more than just him.
