According to Chinese Communist official Xi Zhongxun, his first revolutionary act was an attempt to poison one of his school's administrators when he was 14. He was faithful to the revolution, and the Chinese Communist Party, until his death at age 88 in 2002. In between those ages was a remarkable life. He fought Nationalists and Japanese. He was a right-hand man to both Zhou Enlai in the 1950s, and Hu Yaobang in the 1980s. As the Party administrator responsible for dealing with religious groups, he negotiated with the Dalai Lama–and would show off the wristwatch that the Dalai Lama gave him. But Xi also spent sixteen years in house arrest, internal exile, under suspicion, or at least out of power, from 1962 to 1978. “In the early 1990s, Xi even boasted to a Western historian that although Deng Xiaoping had suffered at the hands of the party on three occasions, he had been persecuted five times.” All this would make Xi Zhongxun fascinating simply as a psychological study of a Communist functionary who, despite everything, remained devoted to the system that oppressed him. But Xi Zhongxun was also the father of Xi Jinping, now effectively the dictator of China. If we are to understand the younger Xi, argues my guest Joseph Torigian, then we must understand his father.Joseph Torigian is an associate professor in the School of International Service at American University in Washington, a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, and a center associate of the Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies at the University of Michigan. He was previously on the podcast to discuss his book Prestige, Manipulation, and Coercion: Elite Power Struggles in the Soviet Union and China after Stalin and Mao, a conversation that was published on May 23, 2022. His latest book is The Party's Interests Come First: The Life of Xi Zhongxun, Father of Xi Jinping was released with Stanford University Press in June 2025. In this episode of The Moos Room, Brad dives into a landmark new study examining the effects of short- and long-distance transport on the health, survival, and growth of pre-weaned dairy and dairy–beef crossbred calves. Drawing on data from nearly 392,000 calves across multiple farms and transport durations (ranging from 30 minutes to 24 hours), the study challenges common assumptions about calf transport. Surprisingly, mortality upon arrival was extremely low and unaffected by transport length. Differences in mortality by weaning (60 days) were also modest and, importantly, were driven far more by early-life factors than by time spent on the truck. The discussion highlights colostrum management as the single most critical factor influencing calf outcomes. Calves fed two colostrum meals had higher serum protein levels, significantly lower rates of failure of passive transfer, and were about 50% less likely to develop diarrhea—one of the leading causes of pre-weaning mortality. Other key drivers of calf survival included diarrhea, pneumonia, dam parity, gestation length, and birth season, with transport duration explaining relatively little of the variation in outcomes. Brad emphasizes that a calf's “destiny is largely sealed before the wheels start rolling,” underscoring that management decisions made at birth—especially colostrum feeding, dam health, and environmental stress mitigation—matter far more than transport distance alone.Questions, comments, scathing rebuttals? -> themoosroom@umn.edu or call 612-624-3610 and leave us a message!Linkedin -> The Moos RoomTwitter -> @UMNmoosroom and @UMNFarmSafetyFacebook -> @UMNDairyYouTube -> UMN Beef and Dairy and UMN Farm Safety and HealthInstagram -> @UMNWCROCDairyExtension WebsiteAgriAmerica Podcast Directory

In this episode of Join Us in France, host Annie Sargent and guest Elyse Rivin of Toulouse Guided Walks dive into the extraordinary life of Charles de Gaulle—the towering general who refused to let France fall. As France's president, he created the Fifth Republic, pulled France out of NATO's military command, and left a legacy that still defines the country today. Listen to this episode ad-free Annie and Elyse break down the myths and the man. Was he a hero? A stubborn idealist? A political genius? You'll hear about his Catholic upbringing, his love for his wife Yvonne, and the heartbreak of losing their daughter, Anne. In this powerful episode of Skin Anarchy, Dr. Ekta Yadav sits down with one of the most influential minds in modern aesthetics, Dr. Steven Dayan — facial plastic surgeon, New York Times bestselling author, educator, and founder of XOMD Skincare. Together, they explore the deeper layers of beauty: the biology, the psychology, and the emotional resonance that shape how we see ourselves and others.Dr. Dayan reflects on his unconventional path from sculptor to surgeon, sharing how art, science, and human emotion converged to form his philosophy of aesthetics. Beauty, he explains, is rooted in evolution — a subconscious signal of wellness and vitality — but attraction is the true driver of human connection. Confidence, authenticity, posture, expression, and energy all play into how attractive we feel, and therefore how we're perceived.Throughout the conversation, Dr. Dayan breaks down the subtle, powerful ways aesthetic treatments can influence mood and behavior. Small changes can boost approachability and positivity — while overtreatment can create emotional dissonance and mistrust. He offers a candid look at how social media has reshaped our aesthetic bias, urging both providers and consumers to recalibrate toward natural proportions and personal identity.Dr. Dayan also gives listeners an inside look at XOMD Skincare, his newest innovation with Dr. Sabrina Fabi, built around the neurochemical link between skin health and confidence.Listen to the full episode to learn how Dr. Dayan is redefining beauty through the lens of neuroscience, culture, and human connection — and why confidence may be the most transformative aesthetic treatment of all.SHOP XOMD and use code SApod for 10% off!CHAPTERS:(0:02) - Introduction & Guest Welcome(1:12) - Early Life, Medicine & the Path to Surgery(3:01) - Writing, Creativity & the Philosophy of Beauty(6:05) - Defining Beauty: Neuroscience, Evolution & Emotion(11:00) - Beauty vs. Attraction & the Role of Confidence(14:50) - Social Media, Trends & Aesthetic Bias(18:40) - Authenticity, Expression & First Impressions(21:03) - Rethinking Training, Safety & Best Practices(24:00) - Global Beauty Standards & Cultural PerspectivesPlease fill out this survey to give us feedback on the show!Don't forget to subscribe to Skin Anarchy on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or your preferred platform.Reach out to us through email with any questions.Sign up for our newsletter!Shop all our episodes and products mentioned through our ShopMy Shelf! Scott Williams, author of "Town Mania: Marcus Winchester and the Making of Memphis," and President and CEO of Discovery Park of America. Scott discusses his background as a Memphian and his role at Discovery Park of America, which inspires visitors through exhibits on history, science, and technology. He mentions the park's upcoming focus on America 250 and Tennessee's celebration in 2026, which ties into the themes of his book.Marcus Winchester's Early Life and Legacy - Scott discusses his research and writing process for his book about Marcus Winchester, a key figure in the early development of Memphis. He explains how Winchester's connection with David Crockett, whom he funded in congressional campaigns after a financial setback, piqued his interest. The book begins with Winchester as a 17-year-old prisoner of war, detailing his early life and the challenges he faced. Scott highlights Winchester's role in establishing Memphis and his journey from a prisoner of war to a prominent figure in the city's development.Interracial Marriage and Social Struggles - Scott and Jeremy discuss the complexities of Marcus Winchester's life, focusing on his marriage to a woman of mixed racial heritage and the challenges they faced due to societal racism. Winchester, despite his contributions to building the city, was forced to move outside the city limits after laws prohibiting interracial marriage became stricter. The couple had eight biracial children, and their relationship was later portrayed negatively, with evidence of their marriage being erased or misconstrued over time.Marcus Winchester's Legacy in Memphis - Scott discusses his ancestors' lives in Haywood County and the impact of slavery on their community. He emphasizes the importance of understanding how slavery affected individuals like Marcus Winchester, highlighting the legal restrictions on freeing slaves and the dangers faced by free African Americans. He highlights Winchester's community-focused actions, such as requesting vaccines during an outbreak and seeking permission to use wood during a harsh winter, to illustrate Winchester's character. Scott emphasizes the importance of including relevant historical context to provide readers with a comprehensive understanding of early Memphis and its settlers.Preserving Memphis's Historical Legacy - Scott discusses his hopes for readers of his book about Memphis, emphasizing a deeper appreciation for the city's history and the importance of preserving historical sites. He highlights the story of the Winchester Cemetery, which was neglected and desecrated, to illustrate why historical preservation matters. Scott expresses hope that readers would understand the significance of preserving Memphis's historical buildings and the contributions of previous historians and researchers.Marcus Winchester's Historical Legacy - Scott discusses the historical significance of Marcus Winchester and the role of transportation in shaping Memphis. He highlights the upcoming anniversary events in 2026, including the bicentennial of Memphis's incorporation and the 230th anniversary of Marcus Winchester's birth, which he hopes will spark public interest in history.Visit https://rscottwilliams.info/ to learn more about Scott Williams and visit https://discoveryparkofamerica.com to learn more about Discovery Park of America.

#386 In this episode, Guy interviewed Jim McCarty, the sole surviving member of the original trio that channeled the famous 'Law of One' series, also known as the Ra Material. Jim shared his journey from living off the grid to becoming part of the Ra contact alongside Don Elkins and Carla Rueckert. The conversation delved into the origins of the Ra Material, the nature of the densities of consciousness, and the spiritual evolution of humanity. Jim elaborated on the pivotal teachings of the Law of One, the history of Ra's interactions with humanity, and the significance of service to others. This episode also covered practical insights into meditation, the balancing of catalysts for spiritual growth, and the transformative power of recognizing the Creator in everyone. About Jim McCarty: Jim McCarty was born on May 10, 1947 in Kearney, Nebraska. After receiving a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration from the University of Nebraska at Kearney and a Masters of Education from the University of Florida, Jim moved to a piece of wilderness in Marion County, Kentucky, in 1974 to build his own log cabin in the woods, and to develop a self-sufficient lifestyle.  There he founded the Rock Creek Research and Development Laboratories in 1977 to further his teaching of the "Brain In Nature Course" that he learned in Colorado in 1972. After meeting Don Elkins and Carla Rueckert in 1979, he joined his research with them in December of 1980. The Ra contact began three weeks later, and the legal entity that we are today comes from this joining of Jim's non-profit charity, The Rock Creek Research and Development Laboratories, with L/L Research in 1982. We use Rock Creek as our legal name, and do business as L/L Research.  Jim and Carla were married in 1987. Jim writes a daily blog called the Camelot Journal that Carla began in 2005. He is currently writing Living the Law of One 102: The Outer Work in 2021 and Living the Law of One 103: The Inner Work in 2022, both from Carla's outlines. He also creates wonderful flower gardens and stonework. He enjoys beauty, nature, dance, and meditation. But before she became the founder (grifter?) of a major spiritual movement, she was just a kooky little girl born into the Russian aristocracy with a flair for folklore, drama, and telling everyone she could talk to ghosts. Johnny sits down with Pete Polis — a former Long Island baseball standout who went from MLB prospect… to becoming one of the largest dealers in Washington state history. Pete's story sounds like something ripped straight out of Breaking Bad. After a promising baseball career with stints in the Blue Jays and Yankees organizations, a series of self-sabotaging choices pushed him out of the sport he loved. Settling into small-town life in Washington, Pete lived straight — raising kids, running a furniture store, and even building a massive food bank that fed hundreds of thousands. Then one conversation in his garage changed everything. What started with OxyContin and fentanyl patches evolved into full-scale trafficking. Pete quickly found himself moving hundreds of pounds of meth and heroin weekly, working directly with suppliers tied to the Sinaloa cartel. He watched the early waves of America's fentanyl crisis from the inside — and unknowingly helped introduce the drug that would devastate the region. After a federal takedown and serious prison time, Pete is now fully legit, running sober-living homes and helping addicts rebuild their lives. This is a wild, emotional, and brutally honest look at how fast a normal life can turn criminal — and how redemption is still possible. Need help staying sober? Najla was born in New York but grew up in North Carolina, where a turbulent and abusive childhood pushed her to survive by any means necessary. On her own at a young age, she turned to scams to fund her lifestyle and escape the chaos at home. What started as small hustles quickly grew into full-blown bank fraud that eventually landed her in federal prison. Najla's story is one of pain, survival, and transformation — from a broken childhood to facing the harsh reality of prison life, and ultimately finding strength through redemption.
