In this Blue Sky conversation, host Bill Burke sits down with Melissa Connelly, CEO of OneGoal, a national organization working to ensure every young person can pursue education beyond high school. Melissa's path to this work started long before her career in education. Raised by a single mother on the south and southwest sides of Chicago, she missed more than 60 days of school in eighth grade and landed in her high school's truancy program, a labeling experience that nearly derailed her future. That changed when a school social worker, Ms. Jeter, taught her how to advocate for herself and get back on track. Melissa shares the highs and lows that followed, including a heartbreaking moment arriving in New York for her freshman year at NYU without enough cash for a cab, and the winding five year, five school path she eventually took to earn her degree. Today, Melissa channels that experience into OneGoal, which partners with more than 300 schools to support around 14,000 students a year, and now trains school districts directly to build advising into their core curriculum rather than treating it as an afterthought. She and Bill discuss: Why the average student receives just 38 minutes of college advising in high school OneGoal's "momentum theory" and why getting a student enrolled isn't enough, they need support through their first year of college too The idea of "occupational identity" and helping students connect who they are to what they want to contribute to the world Parenting her own two teenagers through the college process, and what her son's experience taught her about how rarely students are truly seen in school Why she believes nonprofits should be working to put themselves out of business The concept of "triggers and glimmers," and why she chooses to look for the bright spots even on hard days Melissa's story is a powerful reminder that one caring adult can change the entire trajectory of a young person's life, and that optimism, even when it's called "hokey," is a discipline worth practicing. Max BootBook: Reagan: His Life and Legend Part One (Hour One) explores Ronald Reagan's early life, from a nomadic childhood shaped by an alcoholic father and an optimistic mother, to his success as a lifeguard, sports broadcaster, and Hollywood B-movie actor. It details his marriage to Jane Wyman and his leadership of the Screen Actors Guild during the anti-communist red hunts. Part Two (Hour Two) traces Reagan's presidency, beginning with his campaigns and the 1981 assassination attempt. It analyzes his supply-side domestic economics, foreign relations ending the Cold War with Mikhail Gorbachev, and the damaging Iran-Contra scandal. Alan TaylorBook: American Civil Wars: A Continental History, 1850 to 1873 Part One (Hour One) examines the ideological and geopolitical conflicts of mid-19th-century North America. It profiles figures like expansionist Jane McManis Cazneau, abolitionist Jane Swisshelm, and Black leaders Frederick Douglass and Martin Delany. It details the pre-war political struggles over slavery's expansion, including the Kansas-Nebraska Act. Part Two (Hour Two) covers post-1865 developments across the continent, focusing on Canadian confederation under John A. Macdonald, the French imperial intervention in Mexico against Benito Juárez, and the violent realities of Reconstruction under Andrew Johnson. It also outlines the brutal assimilation and subjugation of Native Americans in both the U.S. and Canada. Dennis SewellBook: Cromwell's Spy: From the American Colonies to the English Civil War Part One (Hour One) introduces George Downing, a brilliant Harvard graduate who rose to become Oliver Cromwell's scoutmaster general during the English Civil Wars. It explores his ideological training, his ruthless perspective on slavery, his intelligence victories in Scotland, and his facilitation of selling Scottish prisoners of war into colonial servitude. Part Two (Hour Two) details Downing's secret diplomacy with Cardinal Mazarin, followed by his opportunistic defection to Charles II upon Cromwell's death. To secure his position under the restored monarchy, Downing orchestrated the capture and rendition of his former regicide allies. David SheddBook: The Great Heist: China's Epic Campaign to Steal America's SecretsShedd analyzes China's multi-decade campaign of intellectual property and data theft against the United States, costing up to $600 billion annually. He explains how admitting China to the WTO in 2001 failed to foster democratization and details the massive scale of the Ministry of State Security. Using corporate examples like Apple and Google to illustrate this threat, he warns of America's vulnerabilities and advocates for defensive reforms, including a partial economic decoupling, modernized legal deterrence, and the establishment of a National Economic Security Council to better protect critical domestic industries and safeguard the nation's technological crown jewels.David K. RandallBook: The Monsters Bones: The Discovery of T-Rex and How It Shook Our WorldRandall recounts the historic discovery of the Tyrannosaurus Rex by pioneering paleontologist Barnum Brown. The narrative traces Brown's journey from a Kansas farm to his recruitment by Henry Fairfield Osborn for the American Museum of Natural History. Driven by Gilded Age competition funded by wealthy industrialists, Brown used geological expertise and dynamite in 1902 to unearth the first T-Rex fossils in Hell Creek, Montana. Despite facing devastating personal tragedy, Brown's efforts culminated in the legendary 1915 public mounting of the apex predator in New York, forever transforming the public's understanding of prehistoric life.
Tiffany Vulcain grew up neglected by her parents, cycled through group homes and juvenile detention, spent her teenage years around gang life, and hit the streets on her own after turning 18 before a credit card scheme and the wrong group of people produced a five year federal prison sentence — and had to give birth in one of the most isolating and most institutionally indifferent environments available. In this episode of Locked In with Ian Bick, she shares what a childhood defined by neglect, group homes, and juvenile detention really produced before the streets found her, what the federal prison sentence that followed the credit card scheme actually looked like from the inside, and what being pregnant in federal prison and giving birth behind bars actually required of a woman who had spent her entire life fighting to survive systems that were never built to help her. _____________________________________________ #pregnancy #prison #truecrimestories #pregnant _____________________________________________ Connect with Tiffany Vulcain: https://www.instagram.com/tjvulcain/ _____________________________________________ Hosted, Executive Produced & Edited By Ian Bick: https://www.instagram.com/ian_bick/?hl=en https://ianbick.com/ _____________________________________________ Timestamps: 00:00 Introduction and Tiffany's Story 00:22 Early Life and Foster Care 01:18 Life in Jamaica vs. New York 02:10 Dysfunctional Home and Abuse 04:19 Running Away and Finding the Streets 06:11 Entering the Group Home 07:19 Freedom and Life of Crime Begins 09:40 Gang Involvement and Acceptance 10:46 Teenage Arrest and Juvenile Detention 13:13 Inside the Juvenile Facility 14:14 Returning Home and Foster Care Again 16:03 Aging Out and Exploitation 17:16 Escalating Crime and Credit Card Fraud 20:08 How the Fraud Worked 21:45 Facing the Victims 23:42 Self-Perception and Morality 24:42 Getting Caught in Virginia 27:59 The Federal Investigation 29:13 Turning Yourself In 31:28 The Plea Deal and Decision to Not Snitch 33:47 Estrangement from Family 34:15 Arrested Again While Pregnant 35:43 Experiencing Rikers Island 38:00 Sentencing and Lost Self-Surrender 40:08 Transport to MDC Brooklyn 41:40 The MINT Program and Women in MDC 43:57 Husband and Baby Plans 45:08 Giving Birth in Prison 53:16 Compassion vs. Desensitization 54:20 After Birth: Hospital and Advocacy 56:20 Baby in ICU and Special Permission 57:42 Leaving the Hospital Without Baby 01:00:42 Returning to Prison in Depression 01:02:02 Danbury Prison and Transition to Male Facility 01:04:12 Fight and Transfer to Philadelphia 01:07:23 The Shoe and Diesel Therapy 01:10:01 Flight with Chris Brown 01:11:42 Visits and Regret 01:12:24 Life in Philadelphia and Self-Discovery 01:14:00 Another Fight and Return to Brooklyn 01:15:20 Coming Home Without a Plan 01:16:00 Post-Prison Struggles and Betrayal 01:17:20 The Turning Point 01:19:20 Healing and Rebranding 01:20:14 Finding Purpose in Re-entry Work 01:22:51 Current Success and Roles 01:24:10 Message to Younger Self _____________________________________________ To advertise on the show, contact sales@advertisecast.com or visit https://advertising.libsyn.com/LockedInWithIanBicka

Chris Barrett has spent ten years as a 911 dispatcher in New Jersey — answering the calls that come in at the worst moments of people's lives, deciding what help to send and how fast, talking callers through situations most people never have to face, and carrying the weight of everything those calls produce long after the shift ends. In this episode of Locked In with Ian Bick, he shares what the training for that job actually involves, what the calls that still haunt him really looked like from the dispatcher who took them, how to de-escalate a caller in crisis, how dispatchers decide what kind of help to send, what the strangest calls he has ever received actually involved, and what ten years of sitting on the other end of the most desperate phone calls available does to a person's mental health. _____________________________________________ #911dispatcher #emergencyservices #truecrimecommunity #911 _____________________________________________ Thank you to CASH APP for sponsoring this episode: Download Cash App Today: https://capl.onelink.me/vFut/ksjh06pb #CashAppPod _____________________________________________ Cash App is a financial services platform, not a bank. Erico Montalvo grew up in Rhode Island without a father in the picture and a mother too consumed by the streets to be present — and by the time the system found him he had already cycled through juvenile detention multiple times and built an identity that the streets had shaped long before he was old enough to understand where that path was going. In this episode of Locked In with Ian Bick, he shares what happened just days after he turned 18 — an accidental altercation with a veteran that turned into a self-defense situation that ended in the veteran's death — and what being charged with murder instead of recognized as a victim of circumstance actually produced over the ten years he spent fighting his case from inside a Rhode Island county jail before finally taking a manslaughter plea deal and accepting a 13 year sentence. _____________________________________________ #prison #selfdefense #truecrimestories _____________________________________________ Thank you to FACTOR & HIMS for sponsoring this episode: Factor: Head to https://factormeals.com/lockedin50off and use code lockedin50off to get 50 percent off and 1 free breakfast item per box for 1 year, while supplies last until! _____________________________________________ Hims: Visit https://hims.com/lockedin to get a personalized, affordable plan that gets you. _____________________________________________ Connect with Erico Montalvo: YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@RicoStillMadeit Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ricostillmadeit/ Website: https://linktr.ee/Ricostillmadeit _____________________________________________ Hosted, Executive Produced & Edited By Ian Bick: https://www.instagram.com/ian_bick/?hl=en https://ianbick.com/ _____________________________________________ Timestamps: 00:00 Guest Introduction 00:22 Early Life in Providence 02:00 Mother's Mental Health & Upbringing 03:13 Father's Deportation 05:00 Feeling Like an Outsider as a Kid 07:36 First Wrong Turns & Finding Identity 10:31 Gang Culture in Providence 16:00 Homelessness & Juvenile Detention 19:27 Getting His GED in Juvenile 21:00 Sponsor Segment: Factor Meals 23:07 Turning 18 & a Spiritual Warning 28:00 Close Calls on the Streets 30:40 The Night of the Incident 37:22 Fight, Stabbing, and Escape 43:03 Learning the Victim Died 43:50 Realizing the Victim Was a Veteran 47:00 Hiding Out and Seeking Help 50:03 Getting Arrested 52:54 Interrogation & Initially Charged with Murder 01:00:00 First Lawyer & a Broken System 01:05:59 Meeting Dawn Huntley, a New Lawyer 01:09:32 Adapting to Prison Life 01:13:00 Finding Faith in Prison 01:21:00 Starting to Turn His Life Around 01:30:00 Facing a 60-Year Offer 01:37:00 COVID Stalls the Case 01:41:00 Considering Trial 01:49:00 A Shocking Plea Deal: 25 Years with 3 to Serve 01:55:50 Walking Through the Sentence 02:03:11 Release and Adjusting to Freedom 02:08:00 Finding Purpose and New Community 02:14:20 No Regrets and a Mission _____________________________________________ To advertise on the show, contact sales@advertisecast.com or visit https://advertising.libsyn.com/LockedInWithIanBicka
Rich Morgan graduated from the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1998, completed his residency at NYU Rusk Medical Center in 2002, and had everything a decade of medical school and training was supposed to produce — until a common dental procedure exposed him to opioids and changed the direction of everything he had spent his career building. In this episode of Locked In with Ian Bick, he shares what the ten year opioid addiction that followed that dental procedure actually looked like, what writing fraudulent prescriptions to pharmacies to fuel his addiction and eventually selling prescriptions to drug dealers actually involved, what getting caught after a customer cooperated with the government actually felt like, and what being sentenced to 168 months in federal prison as a doctor — and navigating the federal system as a Jewish inmate — actually required of him before he was finally ready to rebuild what the addiction and the federal system had taken. _____________________________________________ #doctor #prison #truecrimestories _____________________________________________ Thank you to HIMS & FACTOR for sponsoring this episode: Hims: Visit https://hims.com/lockedin to get a personalized, affordable plan that gets you. _____________________________________________ Factor: Head to https://factormeals.com/lockedin50off and use code lockedin50off to get 50 percent off and 1 free breakfast item per box for 1 year, while supplies last until! _____________________________________________ Connect with Rich Morgan: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/richmorgan8761/?hl=en LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/richard-morgan-b45366143 _____________________________________________ Hosted, Executive Produced & Edited By Ian Bick: https://www.instagram.com/ian_bick/?hl=en https://ianbick.com/ _____________________________________________ Timestamps: 00:00 Introducing Rich Morgan 00:16 Growing Up on Long Island 01:04 Parents and Early Life 01:51 Dreaming of Medicine 02:17 The Incident That Inspired Him 03:33 Fascination with Fixing 04:33 Medical Shows and College 05:31 College and Med School 06:18 What is a DO? 08:46 DO vs MD Schooling 09:57 The Growing Prevalence of DOs 11:05 Salary and Residency 12:15 The First Pill 14:09 The Spiral Begins 15:12 The First Pill Experience 17:19 Dentists and Overprescription 19:30 Writing Himself Prescriptions 21:39 Life at the Height of Addiction 23:12 9/11 and Its Impact 26:10 Sponsor Break: Weight Loss by HIMS 27:33 No Oversight in Hospitals 28:56 Pharmaceutical Wild West 31:16 Self-Image and Dope Sickness 33:16 Patients and Slipping Up 38:53 The Deal with a Dangerous Patient 40:49 Arrest and the Fallout 44:00 Sponsor Break: Factor Meals 46:01 Released on Bail 49:01 Sentenced to 14 Years 52:32 Why No Manslaughter Charge? 56:56 The Real Reason for Selling 58:05 Wife's Reaction and Family Drama 01:01:50 Comparing Sentences: Jared Fogle 01:02:39 Meeting Mobsters in Prison 01:04:33 Father's Support 01:06:06 First Stop: Transfer to Prison 01:07:40 Life at Morgantown 01:12:44 Pedophiles in Prison 01:16:51 Respect as the Doctor 01:20:05 Medical Care in Prison 01:23:24 Jewish Power in the Federal System 01:27:00 Power of the Jewish Community 01:28:25 Money and Influence Behind the Scenes 01:31:03 Taking Advantage of Religious Rights 01:33:52 Smuggling and Prison Life 01:37:08 What Happened to His Medical License 01:43:13 A New Career at His Med School 01:48:49 A Bad First Date 01:51:15 Inmate Dating and Visiting Lists 01:56:40 Final Thoughts and Thanks _____________________________________________ To advertise on the show, contact sales@advertisecast.com or visit https://advertising.libsyn.com/LockedInWithIanBicka
What happens when the voice you're arguing with belongs to someone you love—and eventually becomes part of your own?In this episode of The Songs That Made Us, Gunter explores Cat Stevens' timeless classic Father and Son, uncovering the remarkable psychological conversation hidden inside one of the most enduring songs ever written.Originally conceived for an abandoned musical project, Father and Son became something much larger: a dialogue between generations, identities, and ultimately, different versions of ourselves.Through psychology, culture, and music history, Gunter examines why the song continues to resonate more than fifty years later—and why its two voices may both live within us.In this episodeThe story behind Cat Stevens' Father and SonThe autobiographical myths surrounding the songSinging both father and son from a single voiceThe psychology of internal dialogueIdentity formation and individuationAttachment and separationFamily expectations across generationsMigration, culture, and belongingMasculinity and emotional languageWhy reconciliation sometimes takes decadesThe 2020 recording and what changed over fifty yearsChapter HighlightsIntroduction: The Power of a Solo PerformanceThe Song as a Conversation with OneselfWho Are We Really Arguing With?Cat Stevens' Early Life and Musical RootsPolitical and Personal InfluencesIllness, Recovery, and Creative TransformationFrom Rejected Song to Timeless ClassicSinging Both Father and SonThe Psychology of the Dialogic SelfIdentity, Individuation, and Growing UpAttachment, Separation, and Family BondsMasculinity and Emotional ExpressionMigration, Culture, and Generational ExpectationsRecognition, Transformation, and ReconciliationWhy Father and Son Still EnduresRevisiting the Song in 2020Reflection QuestionsClosing ThoughtsKey TakeawaysIdentity develops through dialogue. Full Text of Readings Memorial of Saint John Vianney, Priest Lectionary: 408 The Saint of the day is Saint John Vianney Saint John Vianney (Saint Jean Vianney), also known as the Curé d'Ars, is considered the patron saint of parish priests. He is known for his deep devotion to the Church and his dedication to the sacrament of confession. His life inspires all priests, as he exemplified a genuinely holy priest through his humility, selflessness, and unwavering faith. Early Life and Calling to Priesthood St John Vianney, also known as the Cure of Ars, was born on May 8, 1786, in the small village of Dardilly, near Lyon, France. His childhood coincided with significant political and social upheaval in France as the French Revolution unfolded. This era was marked by widespread conflict and change, impacting many aspects of society, including the Catholic Church. Despite these tumultuous conditions, John Vianney's family remained firmly rooted in their faith. His parents were devout Catholics and instilled in him a strong and unwavering commitment to his religion from an early age. This foundation would later guide him in his vocation and shape his path toward the priesthood, ultimately leading him to become a beloved figure in the Church. The Challenges of Becoming a Priest A man with vision overcomes obstacles and performs deeds that seem impossible. Saint Vianney was a man with a vision: He wanted to become a priest. But he had to overcome his meager formal schooling, which inadequately prepared him for seminary studies. He also had to overcome the reluctance of the bishop, who questioned his abilities. John almost ended up a farmer instead of a priest. His failure to comprehend Latin lectures forced him to discontinue. But his vision of being a priest urged him to seek private tutoring. After a lengthy battle with the books, John was ordained. Due to his lack of education, he struggled with understanding theology and often faced difficulties preparing his homilies. Despite these challenges, John persevered and became a priest who touched the hearts of many through his humble and authentic faith. John Vianney's Role as Curé d'Ars Situations calling for “impossible” deeds followed him everywhere. As pastor of the parish at Ars, St Vianney encountered people who were indifferent and quite comfortable with their style of living. His vision led him through severe fasts and short nights of sleep. John spent much of his time in the confessional, hearing the confessions of countless penitents. His deep understanding of human nature and compassion for sinners made him an effective confessor, and many experienced spiritual conversion through his guidance and prayers. Miracles and Spiritual Leadership With Catherine Lassagne and Benedicta Lardet, he established La Providence, a home for girls. Only a man of vision could have such trust that God would provide for the spiritual and material needs of all those who came to make La Providence their home. His deep devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary earned him the title “Mary's Priest” or “Maria of Ars.” Many miracles were also attributed to John Vianney during his lifetime and after his death. He became a popular figure in France and beyond, with many seeking his intercession for healing and other spiritual needs. One of his famed miracles was the ability to read the souls of his parishioners and offer them the perfect penance for their sins. The Power of Confession: John Vianney's Legacy His work as a confessor is John Vianney's most remarkable accomplishment. He was to spend 11 to 12 hours daily reconciling people with God in the winter months. In the summer months, this time was increased to 16 hours. Unless a man was dedicated to his vision of a priestly vocation, he could not have endured this giving of self day after day. His devotion to the sacrament of confession inspired many to return to their faith and receive God's forgiveness. He is known as the patron saint of confessors and is a role model for all priests in their duty to shepherd their flock and lead them towards God's mercy. St. John Vianney's Devotion and Fasting Many people look forward to retirement and taking it easy, doing the things they always wanted but never had the time. But John Vianney had no thoughts of retirement. As his fame spread, more hours were consumed in serving God's people. The devil frequently disturbed even the few hours he would allow himself to sleep. He became known as a holy priest. More people came to seek his counsel and guidance. Despite these challenges, John Vianney remained steadfast in his devotion to God and continued to fast and sacrifice for the sake of others, following the example of Jesus. The Final Years: Fame and Spiritual Battles John Vianney's fame spread beyond France, and people worldwide came to seek his spiritual guidance. However, with this fame came many spiritual battles for John, as he faced attacks from the devil and endured physical ailments. Despite these trials, he remained steadfast in his faith and continued to serve God's people until his death on August 4, 1859. He was canonized by Pope Pius XI in 1925. St. John Vianney Feast Day and Legacy The feast of St John Vianney is celebrated on August 4th, the anniversary of his death. He is remembered as a model of holiness and dedication to the priesthood, with many priests looking to him for guidance and inspiration in their ministry. His legacy continues as he exemplifies true sanctity and devotion to God. Saint John Vianney's life serves as a reminder that with determination, faith, and trust in God, one can overcome any obstacle and fulfill one's calling with great love and humility. May we all strive to follow in his footsteps and become holy instruments of God's mercy and grace. Reflection: The Vision of Saint John Vianney Indifference toward religion and a love for material comfort seem to be common signs of our times. A person from another planet observing us would not likely judge us as pilgrims on our way elsewhere. On the other hand, John Vianney was a man on a journey, with his goal before him at all times. Tara Perry grew up in Texas with her father out of the picture, raised by her mother and grandparents in a family where functioning addiction was just part of daily life — which is how she first got exposed to meth as a teenager and started using at just 13 years old. In this episode of Locked In with Ian Bick, she shares how she dropped out of school in ninth grade, had her first child at 16, spent six months in state prison before a five year sentence in the Texas Department of Corrections before she was even 20 years old, and stayed hooked on meth from age 13 all the way to 26 — always managing to get sober inside jail or prison before the cycle started again on the outside. She opens up about eventually starting to sell meth, getting connected to a major organization, having multiple children while in and out of addiction, and what happened when someone close to her snitched and the DEA came knocking. She was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison — and spent seven of those years inside a Texas federal facility before Donald Trump pardoned her on the last day of his first term. _____________________________________________ #prison #addictionrecovery #truecrimecommunity _____________________________________________ Connect with Tara Perry: https://www.instagram.com/princesstara.3313/ _____________________________________________ Hosted, Executive Produced & Edited By Ian Bick: https://www.instagram.com/ian_bick/?hl=en https://ianbick.com/ _____________________________________________ Timestamps: 00:00 Introduction and Early Life 03:50 Childhood, Family & Identity 09:50 First Exposure to Drugs 16:00 Teenage Drug Use & Relationships 23:00 First Criminal Charges & Jail Experience 31:30 Life After First Incarceration 39:00 Motherhood and Continued Addiction 47:00 Second Prison Sentence & Having a Baby in Jail 55:30 Release, Relapse, and Escalating Drug Trade 01:03:30 DEA Bust and Facing Federal Charges 01:10:00 Sentencing and Time in Federal Prison 01:18:00 Life, Change, and Purpose in Prison 01:29:00 Clemency and Life After Prison 01:36:00 Growth, Healing, and Closing Reflections _____________________________________________ To advertise on the show, contact sales@advertisecast.com or visit https://advertising.libsyn.com/LockedInWithIanBicka

Kent McGowen grew up in Texas in a good family with a father in the oil business and a brother who became a cop — served honorably in the United States Air Force became a Houston police officer and eventually became a sheriff's deputy in Harris County. In August 1992 while executing a felony warrant as part of a larger weapons operation the situation escalated when the woman he was there to arrest pulled a gun on him. He warned her repeatedly to drop the weapon before firing in what he says was an act of self defense. In this episode of Locked In with Ian Bick, he shares how the DA's office pursued him even after internal affairs cleared the shooting, what two separate trials and two separate convictions looked like from the inside, how the judge sentenced him to 20 years in the Texas prison system, what surviving as a former cop inside Texas's most brutal prisons actually required of him, and why he believes the corruption that sent him there runs far deeper than anyone in that system ever wanted to admit. _____________________________________________ #prisonlife #texas #truecrimestories #police _____________________________________________ Thank you to CASH APP for sponsoring this episode: Download Cash App Today: https://click.cash.app/ui6m/6pao71et #CashAppPod Cash App is a financial services platform, not a bank. Kathy Eldon's son, Dan Eldon, was a young photojournalist working for Reuters in Somalia when he was killed at just 22 years old while documenting a famine and its aftermath. Rather than let that loss define her, Kathy and her daughter Amy founded Creative Visions Foundation in 1998 to support artists, journalists, and storytellers using media to inspire positive change. The foundation has since incubated hundreds of projects — including the Oscar-winning documentary Navalny — and its work has reached more than 100 million people across five continents. In this candid and moving conversation, Kathy opens up about: How Dan's early humanitarian instincts led him from fundraising for a child's heart surgery in Kenya to documenting the Somali famine as a photojournalist The chaotic, tragic circumstances of Dan's death, and the making of the Emmy-nominated documentary Dying to Tell the Story The real and growing dangers facing journalists covering conflicts today Creative Visions Foundation's Impact Media and Impact Education initiatives, including a multi-million dollar partnership with the Bezos Family Foundation The Angel Catcher journal series she created with Amy, which has helped grieving readers (and hospices) process loss for over 20 years Her new project, Boundless, born out of COVID isolation and the trauma of the LA wildfires Her belief in signs and guidance from beyond — including an encounter with a psychic medium months after Dan's death Her advice for anyone facing profound grief: channel that energy into something that helps others This is a story about finding blue sky above even the darkest clouds — and using creativity, purpose, and community to transform unimaginable loss into a legacy of hope. However, that wasn't the case with Frauke Liebs, who disappeared in June 2006, after watching a World Cup game with her friends at a bar in Paderborn, Germany. Over the next several days, her friends and family would receive cryptic calls from Frauke, each time claiming she was on her way home. Years later, following the strange communications, unknown movements, and a potential connection to two of Germany's most prolific serial killers, the question remains: What happened to Frauke Liebs?StitchFix: Style you want at the price you need with https://www.stitchfix.com/milehigher for $20 off your first order!CashApp: Download Cash App Today: https://capl.onelink.me/vFut/0jvtwa9v #CashAppPod Cash App is a financial services platform, not a bank. Becca shares how stepping away from the constant pressure to perform allowed her to question the definition of success she had been chasing for decades. Step into the shadowy fringes of the unknown with My Dark Path as we unravel the hypnotic revelations of the 1960s with Dr. Leo Sprinkle, the mild-mannered psychologist who became the go-to hypnotist for alien abductees.Host MF Thomas transports you to the quiet campus of the University of Wyoming in Laramie, where soft-spoken Dr. Ronald Leo Sprinkle guides ordinary people into trance to recover memories of the impossible: Nebraska police sergeant Herb Schirmer paralyzed by greenish gas aboard a disc-shaped craft piloted by gray-skinned entities wearing winged serpent emblems and issuing telepathic warnings of a human breeding program, North Dakota mother Sandy Larson lifted by orange spheres to face mummy-wrapped beings with segmented metallic arms who removed and examined her brain through a nostril probe, Wyoming rancher Pat McGuire telepathically instructed to drill a miracle well on his dry land before facing repeated abductions and cattle mutilations, and New Mexico waitress Myrna Hansen witnessing mid-air cattle dissections before descending into the vast caverns of Dulce Base lined with translucent vats of dismembered bodies and floating human-alien hybrid fetuses—complete with government disinformation campaigns, Sprinkle's own childhood abduction memory of a tall mentor aboard a craft, and careers shattered by ridicule that continue to defy explanation. Was Dr. Sprinkle unlocking genuine extraterrestrial encounters through hypnosis, shaping false memories via suggestion, or unwittingly aiding a covert government psy-op that destroyed lives? This episode blends eerie narration with historical context, skeptical scrutiny, and believer's evidence. Perfect for fans of unsolved enigmas, UFO hypnosis, and the paranormal.

Ryan Bloom grew up in a good family in Oklahoma with dreams of becoming a dentist. Life took a different turn and he built an electrical contracting business instead. When the business lost a major contract he turned to a small bank for help — and got pulled into a high interest invoice lending situation that ultimately left him owing over $2 million and forced to declare bankruptcy. Ryan thought everything he was doing was completely legitimate. Then the feds came for him. He was indicted for bank fraud — and discovered the prosecutor had a conflict of interest with the bank. He fought back. He spent almost $500,000 in attorney fees. And he beat the federal government. In this episode of Locked In with Ian Bick, Ryan breaks down the complete story — from the business collapse to the bankruptcy to the federal indictment to the courtroom victory that cost him everything financially but gave him his freedom. _____________________________________________ #fraud #TrueCrime #arrest _____________________________________________ Connect with Ryan Bloom: https://www.linkedin.com/in/rdbloom _____________________________________________ Hosted, Executive Produced & Edited By Ian Bick: https://www.instagram.com/ian_bick/?hl=en https://ianbick.com/ _____________________________________________ Timestamps: 00:00 Introduction and Early Life 01:52 Family Background and Childhood 03:23 College Dreams and Choosing a Career 04:44 Joining and Growing the Family Business 05:46 Family Infighting and Company's Downfall 06:34 New Start in Oil & Gas, Launching Own Business 07:46 Launching Pathfinder HDD and Business Pivot 08:22 Business Growth and Early Successes 09:14 Winning Big Contracts and Facing Setbacks 10:19 Losing Major Contracts and Transitioning to EV 11:16 Cash Flow Issues and Getting Hustled 13:06 Switching to Riskier Clients & Financial Mistakes 14:55 Survival Strategies and Bank Loans 16:46 Entering the Bank's Business Manager Program 19:09 Struggling with Loan Terms and Shrinking Cash Flow 23:32 Business Hits a Wall and Approaching Insolvency 26:00 Personal Consequences & Potential Bankruptcy 28:29 Winding Down Operations and Filing Bankruptcy 31:06 Bankruptcy Process and Asset Liquidation 35:51 Personal Impact and Family Resilience 39:03 Navigating Bankruptcy Exemptions 41:02 Life After Bankruptcy: Rebuilding 44:41 Facing Litigation and Bank's Aggressive Tactics 46:58 Legal Uncertainty and Approaching Discharge 50:02 Arrest by FBI and Shock of Indictment 54:41 Processing the Arrest and Immediate Aftermath 59:30 Public Reaction and Family Support 01:02:44 Beginning the Legal Battle 01:05:12 Prosecution's Case Building and Strange Accusations 01:10:01 Defending Against Fraud Allegations 01:17:01 Legal Strategy and Conflict of Interest 01:21:59 Superseding Indictment and Witness Tampering 01:27:53 Bank's Insurance Claim and Motivations for Prosecution 01:32:00 Preparing for Trial and Hiring Top Defense 01:39:13 Conflict of Interest, Disqualifying the Prosecutor 01:46:07 Case Dismissal and Pre-Trial Diversion 01:50:01 Financial Ruin and Emotional Toll 01:53:02 Life Lessons, Resilience, and Moving On 02:03:40 Advice on Integrity and Closing Thoughts _____________________________________________ To advertise on the show, contact sales@advertisecast.com or visit https://advertising.libsyn.com/LockedInWithIanBicka Learn more about your ad choices. This week for independence day Alex does a deep dive on the often forgotten founder Thomas Paine. Most famous for writing revolutionary pamphlets like "Common Sense" Paine's opinions made a lot of enemies. His writings pissed off really rich people on both sides of the Atlantic, insulted George Washington, Jesus Christ, and every religion he could think of. JOIN OUR PATREON COMMUNITY -

In this interview, René breaks down how the Mexican Mafia gained control inside California prisons, how La Eme influenced street gangs across Los Angeles, how prison politics really work, and what it means to become a “made” member of the organization. He also opens up about his childhood, gang life, violence, addiction, betrayal, debriefing, and the long road toward redemption after leaving the life behind. This is a rare inside look at the Mexican Mafia from someone who lived it at the highest level — and survived to tell the truth. Send us Fan MailSteve Olsen is a retired dentist, a high-performance coach, and a walking miracle. Diagnosed simultaneously with stage four lymphoma, stage one kidney cancer, and total kidney failure requiring dialysis, Steve was handed a grim medical prognosis. Refusing to accept the “probable,” he relentlessly focused on the “possible”. By combining traditional medical interventions with advanced mindset techniques, NuCalm neuroacoustic technology, and deep faith, Steve achieved complete remission within a year. Today, through his platform OptimalPerformance.cc, he coaches everyone from patients to race car drivers on how to control their thoughts, enter the flow state, and live a life of victory.Key Discussion Highlights & TakeawaysThe Cancer Diagnosis: How Steve processed the devastating news of stage 4 lymphoma and kidney failure, and why he immediately rejected the standard terminal timeline.Possible vs. Probable: The crucial mindset shift required to survive critical illness, and why Steve tells patients to actively seek out stories of people who beat the odds. The NuCalm Protocol: How Steve used binaural beats and the NuCalm system to safely guide his brain into the Gamma flow state, allowing him to visualize his immune system destroying cancer cells.Respond, Don't React: Why reacting is an emotion-driven survival reflex, whereas responding is a deliberate, calm, and practiced choice that lowers the body's toxic stress load. The Black Door: A powerful illustration of why human beings often choose the comfort of known suffering over the fear of the unknown—even when the unknown leads to freedom Key Timestamps & Moments of Gold00:00:00 – Episode Intro & MyPillow Mega Sale00:02:40 – Welcome Steve Olsen: The Importance of Mindset00:05:00 – Steve's Early Life, Photojournalism, and Coaching Roots00:09:10 – Facing Stage 4 Lymphoma, Kidney Cancer, and Dialysis00:13:30 – Fixed vs. Growth Mindset and the Power of Definition00:15:10 – The Bernie Siegel Story: How Words Can Kill or Heal00:20:40 – The Gamma Brain Wave: Visualizing Healing and Flow State00:23:00 – Using NuCalm to Warp Time Perception and Relieve Stress00:30:20 – Stress: The Silent Killer and the “Respond vs. React” Framework00:35:00 – Victor Frankl and Choosing Your Response in the Darkest Times00:38:00 – Rebuilding Concrete Hope When All Seems Lost00:44:00 – Entering the Gamma State Safely with Binaural Beats00:50:00 – Connecting with Steve Olsen at optimalperformance.cc00:54:00 – Final Thoughts, Taking Action, and Episode Wrap-UpWebsite: https://OptimalPerformance.cc (not .com)More Info: https://www.copingconqueringcancer.comSupport the showTHE NOT-SO-FINE-PRINT DISCLAIMER: While we are very thankful for all of our guests, please understand that we do not necessarily share or endorse the same beliefs, worldviews, or positions that they may hold. Plato's Intellectual Roots and First Visit. Guest Author: Professor James Romm. Plato's early life was shaped by the reign of the 30 Tyrants in Athens, including his relative Critias. The execution of his teacher, Socrates, further disillusioned him with traditional democracy. He developed a philosophy centered on an unseen world of perfect "forms." Influenced by Pythagorean mathematics, he viewed numbers as a way to understand the universe's abstract essences. Invited by Dion, Plato visited Syracuse in 385 BCE to explore potential autocratic reforms. This visit failed when Dionysius the Elder dismissed his ethical teachings. Plato then returned to Athens to found the Academy. 2
For many, the double murder case that put Makcenzie Shirilla behind bars to serve a life sentence comes as one of the most shocking true crime cases in recent memory. Driving on an obscure road in her small town of Strongville, Ohio, Mackenzie slammed her vehicle into the side of a building at nearly 100 MPH, immediately killing her passengers, Dominic Russo and Davion Flanagan. While the case garnered much attention at the time, it has recently reentered the public conversation following Netflix's documentary, The Crash. So today, we're reexamining the case, looking at new evidence, body cam footage, text messages, and jail cell confessions in an attempt to provide the most complete picture of Mackenzie and her crimes. The Walt Disney Company is the most successful enterprise ever created for monetizing human nostalgia. Today it's the king of global entertainment, holding the intellectual property rights to the childhood memories of billions of people (including, likely, all of you) and is a reliable, predictable profitable business. But it didn't start that way.During Walt's era, Disney operated like an unhinged moonshot factory, blowing its finances on one seemingly crazy project after another, like the very first feature-length animated film or a theme park inspired by Walt's fascination with model trains (spoiler: Disneyland). Walt's relentless ambition to bet the company over and over again not only created some of the most monumental artistic achievements of the 20th century (Snow White, Fantasia, Disney Imagineering), but also resulted in the accidental invention of the modern “flywheel” business model. In this episode, we tell the story of the ultimate marriage of art, commerce, and engineering — The Walt Disney Company: Walt's Era.Sponsors:Many thanks to our fantastic Spring '26 Season partners:J.P. On the surface, Gerard Baden-Clay and his wife Allison had it all. A successful luxury property business, a beautiful young family, and a prestigious family lineage tracing back to the founder of the Boy Scouts. However, in reality, Gerard had woven a web of lies, affairs, and massive loans, all without his family even knowing. However, when it all started crashing down around him, Gerard decided the easiest way out was to kill his own wife. What followed were only more pathetic lies, appeals, attempts to hide the answer to this question: what happened to Allison Baden-Clay.StitchFix: Take the stress out of shopping with https://stitchfix.com/milehigher for $20 OFF your first order!Mintmobile: Stop overpaying for your wireless bill, go to https://mintmobile.com/MILEHIGHER and start shopping for lower rates today!HungryRoot: A Free item AND 40% OFF?!
