Greening Youth Foundation’s (GYF) mission is to work with diverse, underserved and underrepresented children, youth and young adults in an effort to develop and nurture enthusiastic and responsible environmental stewards.
On this special GYF podcast, students apart of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Internship Program, also known as HBCUI, speak about their experiences and interns and working for the National Park Service. Atlanta natives, Miles Ezeilo a Khalil Baker discuss transitioning from urban settings to park sites and working at park sites in urban settings. Miles Ezeilo attends Howard University and is prepared to call on the people to better the environment as the son of Founder and CEO, Angelou Ezeilo. And Mr. Khalil Baker, in his third year at Hampton, shares what it means to be able to teach others about the importance of access to public lands.

We dive into the Green Box with Christine and Alex. The GYF staff members breakdown what it was like to implement the virtual environmental education program. In partnership with the Dekalb County School System, The Green Box program is an at home environmental education system.
On this episode, we interview the founding Greening Youth Foundation Board Member, Ruth Kitchen, who tells her story of how she connected with Angelou Ezeilo and began an environmental education program that would go on to teach the next generation of conservation stewards. Stefan the Scientist, a Bahamain musician talks about his trials, tribulations, and successes while tending to vital water sources and navigating through the conservation sector.
Juan Carlos Jarquin shares his story of relocating from Miami, Florida to Baker, Nevada. Juan Carlos has made Great Basin National Park his new home and is making the most of it with a career in the National Park Service and a positive outlook on life. He talks about his previous internship at Everglades National Park and what truly prepared him for success in the most diverse land of all.
Incredible interns Dajeanai Pennamon, Jeremiah Edwards, and Jayla Wilson share their stories of what it means to forge a career in the conservation sector. Our conversation reflects the progress for diverse interns across the different facets of federal land management including the National Park Service and USDA Forest Service. As part of a collaborative effort between students at Brigham Young University and the Greening Youth Foundation, a survey was designed to study the trend of why diverse students do not stay in the environmental field after completing internship programs. In understanding why this happens, GYF would be able to reshape and improve our internship programs to reverse this trend, as well as present solutions for change to our partners as well.
