The Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) has joined forces with Dell Technologies to develop a new AI platform that will advance research in cybersecurity, sustainability, healthcare and robotics. TUS established the Software Research Institute (SRI) with the goal to develop a leading national research lab, focused on driving innovation in the fields of cybersecurity, cloud-edge computing, robotic control, smart agriculture and healthcare. The new AI platform, powered by Dell PowerEdge servers, will help researchers gain real-time insights into large datasets and develop advanced AI models that power their research. The new AI platform will also support a number of cutting-edge research projects undertaken by TUS and funded by Horizon Europe, the European Union's key programme for research and innovation. This includes projects such as ResilMesh, which focuses on the cyber resilience of critical infrastructure and digital services. It aims to develop advanced tools and mechanisms to detect, prevent, and respond to increasingly sophisticated cyber threats and attacks. Another key initiative is SoilCrates, which is dedicated to restoring and preserving soil health. Through improved soil literacy, real-time monitoring of soil structure, promotion of biodiversity, and optimisation of crop-growing conditions, the project aims to support a more sustainable and resilient agricultural ecosystem. Additionally, the university is one of 17 research and development (R&D) centres in Ireland that runs research projects for the COMAND Technology Gateway Program that is set up in collaboration with Enterprise Ireland Innovation. Based at SRIs TUS Athlone campus, COMAND focuses on research and innovation in areas such as Augmenting User Interactions, End-to-end Applications and Intelligent Infrastructure. Under the COMAND program, the Dell-powered AI platform will be used to develop LLM-based chatbots to support programs around elderly care, automation of automotive assembly lines and robotics using imitation learning. More broadly, the new AI platform will provide the university with powerful AI compute capabilities to support data-intensive research, helping to accelerate data analysis and automate repetitive tasks - boosting research productivity by up to 50%, according to studies. The high-performance Dell PowerEdge servers are purpose-built for demanding AI workloads, delivering exceptional computing power. The servers feature a Cyber Resilient Architecture that offers multi-layered security to safeguard systems, detect threats, and ensure end-to-end data protection. This provides researchers with an IT environment that can simulate complex attacks, identify weaknesses in IT systems more efficiently and provide more accurate analysis on emerging cyber threats for organisations. From healthcare to finance, transportation to manufacturing, Generative AI (GenAI) is solving complex challenges and informing better decision-making. The shift towards accelerated computing is also revolutionising productivity levels, much like the industrial revolution, with potential gains of 20-40%. Through the growing use of AI in computers and other devices, AI is also modernising the workplace, enabling employees to focus on higher-value tasks. According to the Dell Technologies Generative AI Pulse Survey, 76% of IT leaders believe that GenAI will have a significant, if not transformative, impact on their organisations. But, as GenAI continues to evolve and develop, so does its impact - for both cybersecurity and cybercrime. GenAI has emerged as a double-edged sword in the cybersecurity landscape. It holds immense promise as a powerful tool to enhance data protection and threat detection, yet it also opens new avenues for cybercriminals. Evolving cyber threats Over recent months, we have seen several high-profile cyber incidents both here in Ireland and globally that reinforce the need for organisations in both the public and private sectors to enhance their cyber resilience in our AI era. With the growing volume of data which need to be kept secured, many SMEs feel overwhelmed. The Cyber Security Review Grant unveiled by Enterprise Ireland and the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) last month is a positive first step in enhancing the cyber resilience of the Irish business community. AI strengthening cyber resilience At Dell Technologies Ireland, we're seeing businesses increasingly turn to advanced technology to double down on their resilience. Once she started to achieve success Carley began helping other artists through online sessions on everything from songwriting to preparing your single for release and preserving your voice. On top of this she writes great pop songs!I first met her in 2018 when she was playing in my local pub and I soon booked her for corporate gigs at Carnival UK where I was working. Soon after I signed her up for Gary Barlow's 710 Club This was a new concept venue onboard P&O Cruises' Iona that Gary Barlow' was promoted as curating and my job was to find new singer songwriters to perform there. When Covid struck the project went out of the window but Carley continued to creatively and professionally develop. Her first singles sonically reveal all her early Swift and Sheeran influences coupled with Carley's trademark lyrical honesty. As her sound developed the honesty remained culminating in Envy which is a sophisticated song commenting on her treatment at the hands of a fellow female songwriter backstage at a gig. While Homesick finds her taking advantage of having a full band to rock out with in total teenage house party mode! Carley has an incredible support network from her family and her church. And it was the church that gave her the opportunity to express herself musically in the first place. This support is never taken for granted and I think this is why she is so keen on supporting others. This exposure to working with musicians and learning to understand how music works is one of the foundations for Carley Varley's success, first of all in writing great songs, and then in developing her sound from the acoustic singer songwriter genre into becoming front woman of a rock band. Her songs talk about honest feelings of love, confusion and sometimes rejection. They are never aggressive because Carley has a sense of self and her own morals that is deeply ingrained. What this offers the listener is a reflective and (that word again) honest examination of feelings and emotions. Carley Varley has set herself the joint objectives of headlining festivals and opening a cake shop in the New Forest on England's South Coast. I believe that she will achieve both! However, there is a second part to the ambition which demonstrates the kind of person she is more than anything else: when she talks about the cake shop, Carley says that a key element will be a space for young up and coming acoustic artists to play their music. Jason Ward, Vice-President and Managing Director of Dell Technologies Ireland, has unveiled his top five technology predictions for 2023. The prominent technology leader is forecasting how new developments in AI and Quantum Computing together with the growing importance placed on the digital employee experience will transform the business landscape over the coming year. With seven in ten Irish businesses seeking to accelerate their digital transformation plans, smart investments in IT are set to continue at pace. Those investments will increasingly be focused on new technologies that can unlock the value of data while also keeping it secure. The technology predictions for 2023 comes following a year in which Irish businesses recognised that their ability to embrace AI, Cloud and Edge Computing rests on an engaged and innovative workforce. That will enable businesses to provide employees with a consistent and productive work experience, not defined by where they work. New researched published today at the Dell Technologies Forum in Dublin has shown the vital role that employees play in driving digital transformation projects for business in Ireland. The survey of 200 business and IT leaders in Ireland reveals 74% of Irish respondents regard their people as their greatest asset in unlocking the potential of technology. After two years of accelerated digital transformation, half of IT leaders in Ireland say their organisation knows what it takes to digitally transform a workforce, but after such rapid change, many employees are now facing a challenge to keep up the pace. What's more, eight in ten (80%) believe their organisations underestimate how to engage with their people properly when planning transformation programmes. The results undertaken by Vanson Bourne for Dell Technologies highlight how the recent period of rapid transformation is leaving businesses and their workforce in need of time to recharge, reflect and refine before embarking on new or iterating on projects. Despite the huge progress and efforts of the past few years, the research highlights how there is still a potential for transformation to stall as 59% of respondents believe it is their people's resistance to change can lead to failure. While nearly half (49%) say they are still worried that they may be left behind due to a lack of senior vision/authority to now capitalise on the opportunity in front of them. Commenting on the results of the study, Jason Ward, Vice-President and Managing Director, Dell Technologies Ireland, said: “While businesses need breakthrough technologies to transform, harnessing the potential of that technology relies on an engaged and innovative workforce. The results of our Breakthrough study unveiled at today's Dell Technologies Forum demonstrate this very fact. “We've all seen how employees working remotely and now in a hybrid format have been crucial in driving businesses' momentum in the progress towards digital transformation. This momentum might be lost if organisations fail to recognise their people's drive for change and to build on the progress made. “That's why it is vital that businesses should take a three-pronged approach. First, provide employees with consistent and safe work experiences, not defined by where they work. Second, help boost productivity by augmenting human capabilities with technology tools that allow employees to focus on what they do best. Lastly, inspiring employees through an empathic culture and authentic leadership. By enabling a people-first approach, Irish businesses can add immeasurable value to their operations and empower innovators across their workforce.” 1. Connectivity Irish businesses performed tremendous feats to connect, collaborate and conduct business online during the pandemic, with the trend continuing as testified by half of the responders (49%) who believe they'll be more productive when working and collaborating remotely. But they're not finished. Despite working remotely these last two years, 60% of all respondents are not yet experiencing a better work-life balance. As a result, over half of business leaders (52%) believe their staff are wrestling with burnout and/or poor mental health that's impacting their work. Over half (55%) of respondents say they need their organisations to provide the necessary tools and infrastructure to work anywhere (along with the autonomy to choose their preferred working pattern). In fact, they worry their people might be left behind because they don't have the right technology to shift to a highly distributed model (where work and compute are not tied to a central place but occur everywhere). Guest post by Jason Ward, Vice President and Managing Director, Dell Technologies Ireland With citizens, governments, and businesses more dependent than ever on digital connectivity, one of the most pressing sectoral issues for this decade is cybersecurity. While this issue has been in the public consciousness for some time now, there is still a wide perception gap in Ireland between business leaders who consider cyber security a priority, and the lack of implementation of security strategies within their own organisations[1]. The reality is that cybercrime is showing no signs of slowing down, posing risks across all aspects of society. In 2021, ransomware attacks were up 150% and more than 80% of experts say this growth is now threatening public safety[2]. Here in Ireland, the Garda National Cybercrime Bureau has seen a significant increase in the number of ransomware attacks in 2021[3]. These statistics demonstrate the gravity and prevalence of cybercrime today. The question is, as we focus on global recovery, and a new era of economic growth, how do we protect against cyber threats? In order to deliver on globally ambitious designs of digital inclusion, sustainability, improved health outcomes, defence, and much more for the economies of tomorrow; cyber resiliency is a key building block and enabler. The adverse financial impacts involved with cybercrime are seismic, and unsustainable for economies to absorb long-term. It's no secret that advanced technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML) and IoT are the key building blocks for future progress, but perhaps ironically, it's these same technologies that can present new opportunities for cybercriminals. The ultimate challenge will be securing such technologies and enabling more resilient, long-term solutions to the threats posed by cybercriminals. To make this vision a reality, the need for collaboration and support between the public and private sectors has never been more vital. SME Cyber support vital for the wider economy Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) are the backbone of local economies. Yet they increasingly find themselves the target of cyberattacks. Almost one in three small and medium firms in Ireland say they have experienced some form of cybercrime in the past year, according to an EU survey. Irish SMEs recorded above-average levels of incidents with ransomware compared to other EU countries[4]. It is essential that we work to support and protect such businesses, particularly as we look to build more resilient, balanced societies. SMEs, unlike other businesses, often require and are entitled to greater government support and nurture. Governments that recognise SMEs as integral to a truly flourishing society will empower and deliver the most economic progress. Helping these smaller organisations protect themselves against the ever-growing cybersecurity threat must be a priority for public sector recovery strategists, in the months and years ahead. The convergence of proactive and reactive digital resilience strategy is now imperative across organisations, businesses, and industries – cybersecurity defences alone are no longer enough. Organisations need to integrate resilience into all areas of their businesses' digital transformation planning and operations[5]. A new survey by Dell Technologies has found that 69 per cent of businesses in Ireland believe hybrid working arrangements will increase the chances of a cyberattack or incident. Amid the evolving world of work, a vast majority of businesses surveyed (91 per cent) took steps to enhance data protection in the past 12 months. The latest ‘Cyber Resilience Survey' from Dell, in partnership with the Executive Institute, seeks to understand business leaders' changing attitudes towards cybersecurity and the steps taken by Irish businesses to enhance their cyber resilience in a data-driven era. The survey of 113 business leaders in Ireland shows cyber resilience is now a priority, with 91 per cent of organisations recognising its importance at the senior leadership level. Yet, a majority (57 per cent) don't know how to react in the event of a ransomware attack. Despite the growing attention placed on cybersecurity by leaders, the Cyber Resilience Survey reveals a knowledge gap in the data protection options open to Irish businesses. Sixty-four per cent of business leaders say they are not sure their organisations have the capability to isolate or “air gap” critical data in the event of ransomware attack. Moreover, only 28 per cent say they have a well-defined incident response strategy in response to an attack, with less than a third (29 per cent) saying they would restore the data lost from a standard back-up solution. Looking to the future, a vast majority of respondents (92 per cent) agree that enhancing their organisation's cyber resilience is important to ensuring the success of their digital transformation plans. Fifty-five per cent of those surveyed identified the ever-growing number of cyberattacks as the main barrier to enhancing their cyber resilience followed by outdated technology (20 per cent), insufficient in-house cyber skills (16 per cent) and upfront investment (12 per cent).
