We can not allow this environmental movement to be shaped only by the same people who started it years ago.Angelou Ezeilo Angelou Ezeilo, Founder & CEO of the Greening Youth Foundation, shared the story behind her title with us on Sunday, December 13, 2020. The Greening Youth Foundation’s (GYF) mission is to engage under-represented youth and young adults, while connecting them to the outdoors and careers in conservation. GYF’s cultural based environmental education programing engages children from local communities and exposes them to healthy lifestyle choices in order to create an overall healthy community. Angelou’s love for the environment stretches far back to when she was a little girl who had the chance to escape the dense urban streets of Jersey City, New Jersey, to summer in upstate New York. After a brief stint of practicing law, it was through her work as a Legal Specialist for the New Jersey State Agriculture and Development Committee that Angelou embarked upon a career as an environmentalist. Angelou further honed her skills as a Project Manager for the Trust for Public Land (TPL) in both its New Jersey and Georgia offices. In her position, Angelou acquired land for preservation and worked on the New York/New Jersey Highlands Program, Parks for People-Newark, the New York/New Jersey Harbor Program in New Jersey, the Atlanta Beltline and the 20 County Regional Greenspace Initiative in Georgia. While at TPL, Angelou realized the disconnect between the land that was being preserved and the education of people about that preservation—particularly as it related to our next generation. This was the impetus for the Greening Youth Foundation. Under her leadership the Foundation has taken up the charge of providing environmental access to underserved children and young adults through its Public School Initiative and Youth Conservation Corps programs. Greening Youth Foundation provides its services throughout the country and in Ghana, West Africa. This episode also features an exciting update on our previous guest Mary Cantando! Parks everywhere serve as a gateway to nature and the great outdoors. As stewards of these spaces, it’s our responsibility to cultivate the next generation of diverse environmental leaders that will utilize and protect these spaces for generations to come. To assist park agencies with this important work, NRPA recently collaborated with renowned expert and author, Angelou Ezeilo, to host an interactive diversity workshop at our headquarters in Ashburn, Virginia, and we’re thrilled to have her join us on the show. Angelou is the founder and CEO of Greening Youth Foundation, an organization that focuses on the recruitment and placement of thousands of youth and young adults from diverse backgrounds in careers in conservation and land management. Her book, Engage, Connect, Protect: Empowering Young Diverse Environmental Leaders, illustrates the lifelong pursuit of inclusion and equity in conservation and environmental stewardship. On today’s episode, we chat with Angelou about her journey and the work she is doing to bridge the cultural divide and activate a new generation of environmental stewards, as well as why it’s so important to foster a love for this kind of mission. We also chat about why culturally relevant curriculum is necessary to engage more diverse youth in environmental conservation, and how intentional and thoughtful partnerships can help park and recreation agencies work with diverse youth in their own communities. We discuss why it’s important to have these discussions — even when they may make us feel uncomfortable or unsure. Talking is more important than not talking, and it gets easier the more we do it. Israel's Political Turmoil and the Trump Peace Plan (0:32)Guest: Steven Lobell, PhD, Professor of Political Science, University of UtahIsrael's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is scheduled to go on trial for corruption a month from now. That'll be right after Netanyahu and his conservative political party hope to secure a more decisive election victory. The last two Israeli elections were so close that neither leading party was able to form a coalition government. And into all of this comes what President Trump has called is “Ultimate Deal” for peace in the Middle East. Sleepy, Stressed, and Sapped: High School Students Aren't Having a Good Time (20:53)Guest: Marc Brackett, Founding Director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, Professor at the Yale School of Medicine, Yale University.Ask high school students how they're feeling at any given moment and the most likely answer is “tired,” “stressed” or “bored.” Might all three of those be connected to sleep deprivation? The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that middle and high schools start no earlier than 8:30 a.m. Most schools in the US start before then. California last year became the first state to mandate that schools start later. Do Our Dogs Love Us? (33:26)Guest: Clive D. L. Wynne, PhD, FLS, Professor, Department of Psychology, Director, Canine Science Collaboratory, Arizona State University, Author of “Dog Is Love: Why and How Your Dog Loves You”Humans love their dogs. Over 60-million American households have one. And how do dogs feel about their people? Is that eagerness and adoration you sense in your pup's eyes when you come home at the end of the day affection or just a hungry, bored dog doing what he knows will get him food and entertainment? Women Are More Likely to Be Injured in Car Crashes (50:40)Guest: Jason Forman, PhD, Center for Applied Biomechanics, University of VirginiaA woman wearing a seatbelt who gets into a head-on collision is 73% more likely to be seriously injured than a man in that same situation. That's according to analysis of nearly two decades of car crash data in the US.  Is there a problem with the way cars are designed that makes crashes more harmful to a woman's body?  Addressing the Environmental Movement's Diversity Problem (1:06:03)Guest: Angelou Ezeilo, Founder and CEO, Greening Youth Foundation, Author of “Engage, Connect, Protect: Empowering Diverse Youth as Environmental Leaders”I don't like to perpetuate stereotypes, but if you think of the typical environmentalist in America, who is that person? Probably white. Probably upper-middle-class. Someone who has the time and money to worry about eating organic, driving an electric vehicle or participating in a climate change march.  Movies to Start a Conversation With Your Teens About Consent (1:21:04)Guest: Kirsten Hawkes, ParentPreviews.comA jury is now deliberating in the sexual assault trial of former movie producer Harvey Weinstein. Prosecutors say Weinstein abused his power to coerce and assault women. Weinstein claims the encounters were consensual. The #MeToo movement has pushed us all to take a closer look at what consent means – and talk about it with our kids. Movies can help open that discussion.

Hey everybody it's January 2020 Happy New Year! In fact happy new decade for the 21st century. It's kind of cool to be living in the future, a time I tried to imagine as a kid growing up in the 80s. But here we are. It's amazing to see how far we've come. And still what a long way yet to go. If you've been following my work on this podcast or in a few magazine articles I've written over last few years you know that I put a lot of effort into the topic of diversity, equity and inclusion or DEI in the world outdoor recreation and environmental conservation. Throughout the last decade I've reported a lot about the progress that the outdoor industry has made in creating positive cultural and professional environments for people of color, the differently abled, those who identify as LGBTQ and other socially marginalized communities. But there is still so much that outdoor retailers, manufactures and non profit organizations can do to create spaces where everyone can not only be made to feel welcome, but encouraged to thrive, succeed and excel. I spent a bit of time throughout 2019 exploring how various institutions in the outdoor industry are rethinking the various pathways they can take to get a wide variety of different people outside. So I made stop in Atlanta Georgia to speak to a team of subject matter experts who are leading the way toward making the outdoors more diverse, equitable and inclusive.   Angelou Ezeilo is the founder and CEO of the Greening Youth Foundation. I think the challenge with a lot of these retailers are trying to figure out how to integrate, you know, the other right into what they're doing without it being so freakin awkward. So it shows that we have still a long way to go. For more than 10 years the Greening Youth Foundation has worked with Governmental Agencies like the National Park Service, U.S.D.A Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management to place Black, Hispanic and Native American young people in paid professional internships. Working now with private companies like The North Face and Patagonia GYF is trying to expand the diversity of under represented segments of the population in the outdoor industry. In a very candid conversation with members of her staff at their offices in Atlanta, Ezeilo explains the many challenges we face in moving forward the work of DEI. As you can imagine it can be little awkward. It's important to understand that the work of DEI is not a philanthropic enterprise. Research shows that industries and workplaces that are racially and culturally diverse are much more innovative, socially relevant, creative and productive. Having a base of employees and managers that better reflect the emerging demographics of the communities they serve will assure an organizations long-term success and prosperity well into the future. The Greening Youth Foundation is based in Atlanta but they provide services and programs for clients nation wide. Angelou Ezeilo is the author of the new book Engage, Connect, Protect: Empowering Diverse Youth As Environmental Leaders, now available at Amazon. As we head into the new year and a new decade perhaps now we can all work to create diverse equity and inclusive environments where everyone is welcome. Music in this episode Ian Post, ATELLER and Mogli The Iceberg is provided by Artlist The Joy Trip Project is made possible thanks to the support of our partners at American Rivers, the National Forest Foundation and Patagonia.  In our best efforts to protect and preserve the natural environment we need fresh ideas to reimagine how we see ourselves as part of one big biological community. Alan Spears is the Cultural Resources Director for the National Parks Conservation Association. Alan Spears and I had the opportunity to sit down together and talk about cultural resources at the Ranger Rendezvous, the annual conference of the Association of National Park Rangers.  Alan got his start in the outdoors chasing frogs at Fort Dupont in Washington DC. Alan's presentation at the Ranger Rendezvous was about Urban Parks. His story shows the impact urban parks can have a child. And in this case, the child who played in nearby woods grew up to help the National Park Service protect and interpret cultural resources.  In this episode, we also talk about Harpers Ferry, Fort Monroe and the National Park Service's role in interpreting slavery as a root cause of the Civil War.  We also talk about why it is important for the National Park Service to tell stories that don't always have a storybook ending, like the Manhatten Project.    Alan reminds us; the National Park Service should be proud of the work they do and what they have collectively accomplished.  While discussing the challenge of enhancing cultural diversity in park staff and visitation, Alan mentions the Greening Youth Foundation as an example of an organization having an impact.  Find Park Leaders on Facebook.
