GDP Script/ Top Stories for November 6th Publish Date: November 6th From the BG AD Group Studio Welcome to the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: 07.14.22 KIA MOG STORY 1: Gwinnett voters reject transit tax – again Gwinnett County voters rejected a proposal to expand transit for the third time in five-and-a-half years, with a 53.7% to 46.3% margin. This marks the fifth rejection of a transit sales tax, including past proposals to join MARTA and expand the county's transit system. The latest proposal aimed to fund a major expansion of Ride Gwinnett through a 1% sales tax, including new routes and microtransit. Some voters skipped the transit tax question, citing confusion and insufficient information. The defeat means transit expansion won't be funded by sales tax but could still proceed through other funding sources. STORY 2: Trump carries Georgia four years after losing Peach State Former President Donald Trump secured Georgia's 16 electoral votes, narrowly defeating Vice President Kamala Harris with 50.8% to her 48.5%, according to projections. With only three rural counties left to report, Trump led by nearly 120,000 votes, significantly outperforming his 2020 loss to Joe Biden by 11,799 votes. This victory in Georgia, along with a win in North Carolina, shifted focus to the "Blue Wall" states for Democrats' hopes of retaining the White House. Trump and Harris both campaigned extensively in Georgia, with Trump holding rallies in rural areas to bolster support. STORY 3: Gwinnett's Overstory Rooftop Bar To Host Holiday Cocktail Class Overstory Rooftop Bar is hosting a Holiday Cocktail Class on Sunday from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m., where guests can enhance their mixology skills by learning to craft two signature holiday cocktails: the Winter Chill and the Fall Spritz (NA). Led by Food and Beverage Director Ashley Castillo, the class will focus on using seasonal ingredients and refining cocktail techniques, perfect for holiday gatherings. The event takes place at the Westin Atlanta Gwinnett in Duluth, and attendees must be 21 or older. Tickets are available online. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. Tim Walz to Gwinnett, and a meeting between Gwinnett's Chairwoman and Vice President Kamala Harris. Lawrenceville is transforming alleys like Shoehorn and Honest Alley into vibrant spaces with landscaping and lighting, funded partly by a grant. Gov. Walz energized Gwinnett Democrats for Kamala Harris' campaign, likening her to a quarterback. Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson greeted Harris in Atlanta, expressing support for her presidential bid. Additionally, School Board Member Adrienne Simmons will host "Sip With Simmons" sessions for community engagement. STORY 5: Bernie Marcus, Co-Founder of The Home Depot, Dies at 95 Bernie Marcus, co-founder of The Home Depot, passed away at 95 in Boca Raton, Florida. Known for his philanthropy, Marcus co-founded the Atlanta-based home improvement giant in 1978 with Arthur Blank. After his career, he focused on charitable work, supporting causes like medical research and Jewish initiatives. The Home Depot, headquartered in Cobb County, mourned his loss, praising his business acumen. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp and other leaders highlighted Marcus's impact on business and philanthropy. Marcus's foundation has awarded over $2.7 billion in grants, supporting various causes, including the Georgia Aquarium and Autism Speaks. Break 3: And now here is Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on food apps ***INGLES 2 'ASK LEAH' FOOD APPS*** We'll have final thoughts after this. Owlbert & his daughter Pirate came with us to Georgia Aquarium - here is how it went.
'Cause baby, now we got bad blood. That's right, Keithie and part of the Nation went down to Hot-lanta for the return of the WWE's Premium Live Event, Bad Blood. Also, we did some other cool stuff like the World of Coca-Cola and the Georgia Aquarium. Oh yeah, and also got to do some karaoke and Jenny's birthday dinner. Listen in to the play by play of the city that General William Tecumseh Sherman burned down back in the day, but somehow it survived and is still on my mind.

Dennis Christen, Senior Director, Animal Wellbeing & Behavior for the Georgia Aquarium was one of the architects that helped move two beluga whales from the NEMO Dolphinarium in Putin-ravaged Ukraine to the safety of Europe's largest aquarium, Oceanographic, in Valencia, Spain. This story made international headlines recently and involved a host of zoological facilities and other agencies to rescue these animals from worsening conditions such as power interruptions, food and other supply chain issues, and the inherent danger posed to NEMO staff caring for these and other animals over the past several years of Russian aggression. It is another amazing example of conservation and compassion by zoological professionals and institutions concerned for the welfare of animals regardless of cost or risk. It is a tale that honors the bravery, national pride, and dedication of the people of Ukraine as they strive to maintain some degree of normal life even as they fight for survival against a powerful aggressor. In 2022, Christina discovered she had hip dysplasia, and she could no longer run. Doctors told her that she would probably need a hip replacement in about 10 years, and that was hard for a 36-year-old to hear. They also let her know that if she lost weight, she would find some relief. So, Christina started searching, and found intermittent fasting.Christina decided to start with 16:8, and she shares the challenges of her very first day fasting, which involved the physical task of catching 100 flamingos for bird flu vaccines.During the conversation, the pair delve into the differences in animal and human eating habits, with Christina drawing parallels from her job as a zookeeper, culminating in humorous stories about her work with animals, including penguins, and her previous experience at the Georgia Aquarium. Christina and Gin discuss the importance of finding an eating schedule compatible with one's lifestyle and discuss how Christina and her husband, who also adopted intermittent fasting, have gained freedom and time for personal development. They touch on the significance of not obsessing over the scale, utilizing "honesty pants" as a gauge instead, and engaging in new physical activities like sea swimming, which also contributes to Christina's well-being.Christina concludes with valuable advice for listeners, urging them not to get lost in the extremities of dieting and to maintain a sustainable and flexible approach to intermittent fasting. She emphasizes the importance of being gentle with oneself, embracing a fasting method that adapts to life events, and not being overly restrictive. Christina's parting wisdom encapsulates the spirit of her story—fast clean, and find a balance that allows you to maintain a healthy weight and active lifestyle without compromising life's joys.Get Gin's books at: http://www.ginstephens.com/get-the-books.html, including her latest bestseller 28-Day Fast Start Day-By-Day, the Ultimate Guide to Starting (or Restarting) Your Intermittent Fasting Lifestyle so it Sticks, New York Times Bestseller, Fast. It's so cool to know that this type of immensely creative work is being done here in St. Louis. Let's go…

Attendees immersed themselves in a celebration of Jewish heritage, art, music, and cuisine amidst the captivating marine life backdrop. The festival offered diverse experiences for all ages, from colorful performances to engaging activities for children.2024 is the 10th anniversary of Morris being owner and publisher of the Atlanta Jewish Times. The Atlanta Jewish Times aims to deliver news to the entire Jewish community about various aspects of Jewish life in Atlanta. Morris is a renowned businessman and philanthropist who has owned and published the Atlanta Jewish Times since 2014. Since acquiring the AJT, he has expanded the paper's commitment to the community by creating the Atlanta Jewish Connector, an online Jewish events calendar and resource guide, and the Atlanta Jewish Life Festival, which celebrated its fifth year of bringing Jewish organizations together.Morris has built a reputation as someone who can help nonprofits solicit funds. Although he's served in various leadership roles with Jewish organizations, he finds he's most effective when concentrating on two or three nonprofit board positions at a time that don't solicit from the same pool. He advises those considering where to volunteer: “When you join a board, don't try to do everything. Pick things that can make a difference and focus your energies on that.”

Końcówkę sierpnia i prawie cały wrzesień spędziłam w Stanach. Przywiozłam z Ameryki tonę wirtualnego wsparcia i docenienia. As famed Iron Chef Alton Brown once said: “Everything in food is science”. In this week's episode, both of our storytellers discover something about themselves through the science of food. Part 1: Corn researcher Katie Murphy is scared becoming a TikToker will ruin her credibility as a serious scientist. Part 2: As a kid, Scottie Rowell gets an unpleasant surprise when they don't wait to eat their grandmother's pickles. Katie Murphy is a plant biologist who loves studying the inner workings of corn. She is the Director of Phenotyping and Principal Investigator at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center, a non-profit research institute in St. Louis, Missouri. Her research group studies phenotyping, which means measuring the physical traits of plants. She holds a PhD in Plant Biology from UC Davis, and a Bachelor's in Chemistry from Stanford University. Katie's goal is to make a secure, sustainable food supply that can withstand future climates. She shares her research on TikTok @Real_Time_Science. Scottie Rowell is a Queer, Agender, Autistic artist based in Atlanta, GA. As a storyteller and puppeteer, Scottie's career is focused on performances and experiments in play in non-traditional theater spaces. As owner of Teller Productions, Scottie creates tactile, immersive experiences for families using sustainable materials (all repurposed, discarded, or easily recycled). Scottie's show Super Cello! premiered with the National Symphony Orchestra and the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts in April 2022. Other clients include the Georgia Aquarium, the Alliance Theater, the Center for Puppetry Arts, and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. Visuals and fun at ScottieRowell.com and TellerProductions.com. Shark Week's Luke Tipple tackles the question “How can I work with sharks?” alongside two experts in the field – and their answers are not always the obvious ones. Luke is joined first by Kelly Link, Associate Curator of the Georgia Aquarium who talks about what it's like to be an aquarist, how it differs from field work, and how to get yourself noticed. The second guest is Dr. Neil Hammerschlag who goes into detail on what it takes to become a prominent scientist, and what other paths you can take if a PhD isn't for you. We talk about our weekend trip to Atlanta for the Twice concert and Brooke's birthday, including visiting the Center for Puppetry Arts, running into Momo and Nayeon at the Georgia Aquarium, and watching graphic sex scenes between Che and Miranda in And Just Like That. We also discuss Seven by Jungkook being raunchier than we ever could've imagined, Ariana Grande's alleged divorce, Gigi Hadid smuggling weed, her ex Zayn on Call Her Daddy, Timothee Chalamet as Willy Wonka, Tokyo Toni's latest antics, and almost meeting Mr. Morrow. For our NTBABBs we talk about people who stop in the middle of the road when they don't know where they're going and people who don't allow themselves to have fun on the Fourth of July.
“The Ocean holds the keys to an equitable and sustainable planet. Join the revolution to unlock innovative ocean science solutions.” That is the opportunity and challenge posed by the Ocean Decade, the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021–2030). Launched in January 2021, the Ocean Decade provides a convening framework for a wide range of stakeholders across the world to engage and collaborate outside their traditional communities to trigger nothing less than a revolution in ocean science. This is clearly a topic to explore on the Engineering With Nature® Podcast. In Season 6, Episode 3, host Sarah Thorne is joined by cohost Amanda Tritinger, Research Hydraulics Engineer in the Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory of the Engineer Research and Development Center, US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). Amanda was recently named Deputy Program Manager for EWN. Together they welcome Courtney McGeachy, Director of the Ocean Visions – UN Decade Collaborative Center for Ocean-Climate Solutions. Amanda and Courtney recently met at the State of the Coast Conference in Louisiana where they were on a couple of panels together, including one discussing nature-based solutions (NBS). Amanda thought Courtney would be an inspiring guest, and she certainly was. The Ocean Visions – UN Decade Collaborative Center is a partnership with Ocean Visions, Georgia Tech, and the Georgia Aquarium. Courtney describes Ocean Visions as a nonprofit startup focused on innovations and solutions for the fight against climate change. The UN's Ocean Decade is designed to take us from “the ocean we have to the ocean we want.” The Ocean Decade has seven desired “Ocean Outcomes,” including a clean ocean, a healthy and resilient ocean, a productive ocean, a predicted ocean, a safe ocean, an accessible ocean, and an inspiring and engaging ocean. “I think these are all important because they touch on not only everything that we need from a scientific lens but also what we need from a personal and community lens. There's no point in making the ocean safe and healthy if it's not accessible to all of us.”Courtney notes that there are a lot of different opportunities when it comes to nature-based solutions. “We want to make sure that we are creating opportunities to leverage these nature-based solutions to help fight climate change. I think Jane Lubchenco said it best. We were sort of trying to change the narrative from the ocean being a victim to the ocean being a solution to help us fight climate change.”In closing, Courtney summarizes her “call to action” for policy and decision makers. “Give innovations and solutions a fighting chance. With every solution, there are risks and side effects. So, I encourage policymakers to think of the ocean and climate crisis as a public health crisis because they're quite similar. I would also encourage policymakers to find the resources. Step up to the plate financially.”Amanda's call to action is to not put solutions into a box—consider this OR that. “Why not both? The huge takeaway from this conversation is that there are cobenefits. There's a toolbox—a suite of tools—there's no reason we can't combine them. There's redundancy in our resilient solutions that work together and, while protecting our communities, can also protect our citizens while helping to protect our ocean, which is our incredible resource that we might taking for granted right now.”For more information and resource links, please visit the EWN Podcast page on the EWN website at https://www.engineeringwithnature.org/ • Amanda Tritinger at LinkedIn• Courtney McGeachy at LinkedInThis show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5872676/advertisement

Why do sharks have multiple sets of teeth? Why do sharks lose so many teeth? Do sharks eat fish? How do sharks breathe underwater? Do sharks sleep? Give a listen to this totally jaw-some conversation about sharks with Dr. Kady Lyons, shark researcher at the Georgia Aquarium! We also tackle: Why are dinosaurs extinct and sharks are not? Were megalodons the biggest sharks in the world? Do sharks have noses? How do sharks communicate? Why do sharks bite? Why are sharks dangerous? Download our learning guides: PDF | Google Slide | Transcript Sharks are a type of fish. They've been around for millions of years and their body plan hasn't changed much in that time! Sharks' skeletons are made of cartilage. They don't have any calcified bones - so the only part of a shark that gets left behind in fossil records is their teeth! Megalodons were the biggest shark, but they are extinct (despite sensational TV shows that claim otherwise). The latest research suggests megalodons were bigger than modern day humpback whales! Sharks and other fish breathe by extracting oxygen from water by the use of their gills. Gills are made of very thin tissue. The blood inside the tissue picks up oxygen from the water and brings it into the organs in the fish's body. Sharks evolved to have sharp teeth to grab slippery fish and other prey. If they break a tooth, they can regrow a new one, and they just drop the old one. Easily replacing a tooth that breaks off is a strategy that allows them to keep hunting. Their teeth grow continually through a shark's life, moving forward in their mouth kind of like on a conveyor belt, maturing as they go. So when a tooth falls out a new one moves forward. Some sharks lose whole rows of teeth, like dentures, all at the same time. All sharks are carnivores, eating fish, seals, and sometimes other sharks. Some species, like whale sharks, filter feed, mostly on zooplankton but sometimes phytoplankton (sea plants) as well. Sharks have been known to attack humans, but humans actually aren't great prey for them because we lack a thick layer of blubber or other energy the sharks are on the hunt for. Usually sharks attack when they mistake a human for something else, like a seal. Sharks go through periods of sleep or rest, reducing brain activity. Sharks have a fantastic sense of smell. It helps them find their prey.
