The GrindWorks Podcast is another extension of GrindWorks BMX and focuses on interacting with various guests and is loosely based around BMX and its sub-culture.
James Yusczyk is no stranger to the GrindWorks podcast, in fact he was a part of the last episode we posted as well. But it's been a while (Episode 002) since we did an episode about what's going on in his life and updates thereof. As noted at the beginning of the show, we are going to be taking our webstore down for a while at the end of the year, so if you are in the market for anything, make sure to get it now. Link below. I haven't met many people like Jake The Hippie. He does things his own way and is always having a good time in the process. Tim Hankins is a St Louis local; owner of both Tim's Pre-Owned BMX Shop and Capital BMX Brand; and soon-to-be host of street jams in all 50 US states while living out of a bus. Tim addresses some negativity surrounding himself and his jam series and then discusses his desire to push beyond being "cancelled" and to complete the jam tour before settling back into St Louis to pursue the next chapter in his BMX journey: a brick and mortar storefront. How do you define success? A lot of people consider the attainment of wealth, favor, or eminence the default definition. But what if there are other goals and motivations? How do we define and measure success in other ways? This episode dives into this subject and I discuss learning tricks, school, athletics, work, starting a business, social media, and hobbies. Myles "Bubba" Roach, 11 years old, was killed on 10/30/2021 at the hands of a school bully. Since this horrific event, his parents, Jordan and Katelyn Roach, have been working on a jam in his memory and working on setting up a non-profit to "put all brakes on bullying". This episode is a small glimpse into what happened, how the family is coping with the loss, and how they are using it as motivation to help curb bullying for others and promote BMX and other action sports as a means of averting bullying within their community. They've still got a long ways to go in the fight for justice, getting a formal 501c non-profit established, and getting stronger every day. A lot of you have been wondering where we are, what we're doing, and probably if we are still here. The answers to some of that are in this episode, with at least another, maybe a third episode to follow bringing everyone up to speed on GrindWorks and myself (AV). This episode was recorded over a year ago on a drive from NY to PA (excuse the poor audio quality) while I was moving my family back to NY. This was all quiet beforehand and announced on this podcast; problem was, I never posted it until now. Derek Nelson took some time to sit down and discuss some of the issues he has been experiencing over the last 5 months regarding the shutdown of his skatepark, HCS, and his fabrication business, Spooky Action Industrial Arts, by the town. Things are moving forward and he has been able to operate SAIA with approval from the town, but the status of HCS as a skatepark open to the public is still in limbo with the town. The links to help out are provided below. If you have ever enjoyed the content Derek has created over the years (Road Fools 13, Tree Bicycle Co edits, HCS videos), been to a jam at the park, or just want to support something rad for the community, please do what you can! After having a plan in place to chat with Harry for an upcoming episode, and subsequently having all plans put on indefinite hold, I'm glad we were finally able to make this happen. Harry Geyer is the owner of The Wheel Mill bike park in Pittsburgh, PA. This episode is split into two main parts: The first is regarding some features of the park that are sometimes considered "lame" or "fun-killers" by patrons and allows Harry to explain why The Wheel Mill has to make some choices that they do and give him a voice in the discussion that happens within the park. He gives some really good insight into the "not-so-fun" sides of running a park and trying to create a sustainable business model. The second is regarding the current state of The Wheel Mill during the current Coronavirus pandemic, including some speculation into what re-opening "might" look like. There's some links at the bottom to point you towards the Vans shoe fundraiser, the shirt selection over at Ink Division, and The Wheel Mill social medias. Jams and contests seem to be a question on everyone's minds right now as we begin to re-emerge from nation-wide Stay-at-home orders and quarantines, while restrictions on gatherings remain in place. James is originally from the Owego, New York area and many of you will know him from the Binghamton scene; he now lives in Austin, Texas. I caught up with him when I was visiting in January, but couldn't make a podcast happen in-person, so we did it via Skype while we're all still quarantined. This episode is with a small business owner and BMX rider in the Pittsburgh scene, Karlis Fisers, or as many will know him as Mantis Tattoo, or @813mantis. Karlis has ridden BMX since the early 1980's and also operated Mantis Tattoo, a tattoo and piercing shop, in Greensburg, PA for 16 years. As you can imagine much of the discussion is related to the current Corona Virus (COVID-19) epidemic and the impact on small businesses such as his own, but we definitely talk about BMX as well. This episode was more of an experiment than anything else; seeing both what I can manage to do with my computer setup and also how responsive the audience would be to a live-stream format with the podcast. I recruited James Yusczyk to help co-host it, which was intended to be together in the same room, but due to the current state of the world, decided to do it via Skype, which also gave us a starting point for discussion. This episode is somewhat a hodge-podge of information, jokes, and just a general hang-out with some of the Buffalo, NY crew who eventually hop into the Skype call towards the end. Overall, a fun episode to do. We didn't realize audio was being pushed at the beginning, but some of it was humorous so I edited it down and kept it in. I think we will do another one of these, but send your feedback and let us know what you think. For the full experience of this episode, check out the YouTube version. I've never met Brad in person, but we've known each other via the internet for quite some time. There wasn't much of a plan going into this episode and it really turned into a recorded hangout session where we chatted about plenty of things from video games to the Thrasher BMX Jihad article to social media. This isn't extremely focused and has some serious issues with syncing the audio to the Skype call which I will hopefully get fixed out better on future episodes if Skype is used. Regardless, there's some interesting discussion and we had a good time. A lot of you may have seen or talked to Sam in the past at a handful of different events throughout the East Coast. He commonly refers to himself as "Sam from Mexico", drives a Honda Element typically equipped with a tent on the roof, and is an active farmer in Upstate NY. Brant Moore and I sat down and put the new setup to use both recording this episode and live streaming it on @brantmoore 's YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCWGijuL19i21bgv_ow2i2YA The new setup feels good and should be substantially higher quality than previous uploads (recording at 1080p now, versus the 540p before). The ability to live-stream and record at the same time is going to be interesting as we move forward, although I'm unsure how often it will be utilized. When I do use it, I will likely stream to Mixer: www.mixer.com/grindworksbmx Feel free to drop a comment with feedback on how this episode looked and sounded and any other suggestions for us. There are still some finer details being worked out within the studio setup itself, so there will still be a few changes coming in the future! I sat down with Kevin Czuba while up in Buffalo a couple weeks back. We talked about a lot of mid-school BMX fun. I also had James Yusczyk co-hosting again. I've wanted to sit down in person with Sam Schrage for a while and get an episode recorded and it hasn't been able to work out. And, a while back we recorded a short test with the Anchor App and decided that while I was out of town for work it would be a good time to give it a real shot and record an episode. Sam and I chatted for quite some time about some random and at times probably controversial topics. I am throwing this episode together rather quickly and trying to lock down another episode while out in Seattle. GrindWorks BMX Podcast 025: This episode has been in the works for a while and I really wanted it to be episode 020. However, the interviews kept flowing and we hit 020 without a chance to record this. Anyway, this is a recap episode, talking about some of the changes over time that the podcast has had. It's timed perfectly as the last episode recorded at my (Andrew's) old apartment and the next episode will (most likely) be recorded in the new studio/office setup at my house. If someone wants to record an audio-only episode again, I would obviously squeeze that in beforehand. Feel free to drop a comment with suggestions for us. GrindWorks BMX Podcast 024: Before packing up and moving to a new house, I sat down with James Yusczyk to do some recent event recap. I had no intention of it taking a month for me to be set up again, and even worse, I'm still not really. I didn't record an intro or outro for this one and just throwing it up as-recorded. GrindWorks BMX Podcast 020: While most of you will know him as "The Bar End Guy", Cody Dixon is an interesting guy with a lot to talk about. GrindWorks BMX Podcast 018: I was happy to be able to get some time with long-time friend Derek Nelson and asked his brother Andy to sit in with us as well. Like most of the time with both of them, we ended up just loosely chatting and joking around in Andy's living room. This is the second episode recorded using the portable recording setup.
