From Madrid to Luxembourg, BMX legend Viki Gómez and his wife Alexandra share their story of the sport, sponsorship, artistry, resilience and dreams for the sport's future. When you think of BMX, images of ramps, flips, and adrenaline-fueled stunts may come to mind. But for Viki Gómez, the Spanish-born, six-time World Champion in BMX Flatland, the sport is art form on two wheels. For over two decades, Viki has pushed the limits of what's possible, carving out a career of creativity, athleticism, and global recognition. That's what Red Bull spotted and why, since 2003, Viki has been a Red Bull Athlete - one of the very first BMX riders to gain such a sponsorship. This partnership also helped to catapult BMX Flatland to be seen as a serious international sport, requiring skill, creativity and practiced technique. Red Bull's backing gave Viki the chance to travel all over the world, inspiring so many young people, some who had never seen a bike before. “It meant credibility,” Viki reflected. “It gave me the chance to keep innovating.” Behind the titles, trophies, and TEDx talks, there is also a working and loving partnership off the bike. His wife, Alexandra Gobran, originally from Luxembourg and raised in Sweden, has been instrumental in steering his professional journey. With a background in law and sports management, she co-founded GG.M. Gobran Gomez Management. In Luxembourg, they've brought international projects to life — from the Red Bull 3EN1 events at Péitruss Skatepark to cultural collaborations with UNESCO and ESCH2022. In 2024, they spearheaded the UEC European Championships in BMX Flatland at Rotondes, in collaboration with the Luxembourg National Cycling Federation, the Sports Ministry, and the City of Luxembourg. Of course, as with all sports at the highest levels, injuries are ever-present realities. This has helped Viki and his wife develop their latest venture, VIKING Cykles, which merges sport, design, and sustainability, producing premium titanium gravel and BMX parts. Baboon aka Chris Volkwine is a foreman for Pivot Customs and one of very few BMX riders in the industry. Pivot is an American-based concrete skatepark construction company. They have done over 3500 projects in 45 countries over the past 20 years. Baboon has been with them for nearly a decade. After wrapping up a skatepark build in Boise, Idaho, Baboon flew into Rochester to join the show. I have known Baboon for a long time and he's a passionate and creative rider. You may recognize him from his work building ramps as Swampfest. This was a great conversation to see behind the curtain of what goes into constructing a concrete skatepark. Federal surveyors are on the ground in Milwaukee. It's a step toward unlocking aid for residents whose homes flooded in this month's historic storms. Wisconsin lawmakers debate a proposal to make some tips tax-exempt. And, from Wisconsin Life, a story about how a DIY skate park in Milwaukee went from an underground secret to a community asset.
Five years ago, a group of friends in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, saw potential in an old parking lot under a freeway. WPR’s Anya van Wagtendonk has the story of the National DIY skatepark – a do-it-yourself project that started out as a secret – and has become part of the fabric of the city.

Nick Parlet aka @plumbingsk8r . He is a lifelong skateboarder, operates his own plumbing business, is a content creator, and, most importantly, a father of two. Nick showed up and helped build Breaking Free Skatepark back in 2016 and has been a lifelong friend ever since. His efforts are something I will never forget, and our friendship is noteworthy. Nick and his son, Blake, can be seen in many old videos and vlogs on the BFS YouTube channel. It was awesome to catch up with him about his business and social media content creation. Nick is a hard worker, and that comes from his years of skateboarding. We have a lot to learn from his dedication. Action sports, local culture, youth empowerment, and small business collaboration come together at the Shred Skatepark, which is more than just an indoor skating facility. We offer skate sessions, private bookings, lessons, birthday parties, venue rentals, and gear rentals, while also housing small local businesses including a barber, tattoo artist, café, and food vendors. They are challenging the outdated skatepark model, which is often either a public, underfunded outdoor space or a single-use private venue focused only on skating. These traditional models are limited in their reach, rarely inclusive, and often disconnected from the broader community.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On May 19th, demolition of the 24 year old Condon Skatepark began, paving the way for a new park. But it didn't happen quietly or without fanfare. A group of skate locals, morose over the destruction of what they view as the better park, gathered to partake in a collective mourning for the place many call home. KVMR's Kelley Rees shared this report from the scene.
Skaters of all ages showed up to Tuesday night's Grass Valley City Council meeting hoping to convince the council to halt the demolition of the Condon Skatepark. KVMR's Lydia Thomas shared this report.
WBZ NewsRadio's James Rojas reports.
Anyone with information about the shooting can contact the Nevada County Sheriff's Office Major Crimes Unit at 530-265-1471 or through the Sheriff's Crime Tip Form on the Nevada County website. The Grass Valley Skatepark Coalition's proposal to save the existing park can be read on change.org.

What's your guilty pleasure? Let us know in the comments!George Wang Jr. is a unique blend of talents—both a full-time skateboard coach and a professional stand-up comedian, based in Monterey Park, California. Reflecting on his journey, George often laughs at the irony of life. In high school, he was constantly in trouble for making his classmates laugh and for getting his skateboard taken away. At the time, these were seen as distractions, but little did he know that these very activities would become the foundation of his future career.Throughout his life, George worked numerous jobs, trying to carve out a path. But it was the passion projects—skateboarding and comedy—that proved to be his true calling. Looking back, he realizes that the things he did for free, with no expectation of rewards, were the real investments in his future. Today, George is not only able to combine his love for skating and making people laugh but also helps others through his work as a skateboarding coach, guiding the next generation of skaters. His ability to entertain and inspire has made him a standout figure in both the skateboarding and comedy communities.Through his unique perspective, George embodies the idea that the things we are passionate about, no matter how unconventional they may seem at first, can shape and define our futures. His story is a testament to the unpredictable, often humorous way life unfolds.Social Media: @georgewangjr___________________Music CreditsIntroEuphoria in the San Gabriel Valley, Yone OGStingerScarlet Fire (Sting), Otis McDonald, YouTube Audio LibraryOutroEuphoria in the San Gabriel Valley, Yone OG__________________My SGV Podcast:Website: www.mysgv.netNewsletter: Beyond the MicPatreon: MySGV Podcastinfo@sgvmasterkey.com

More than 30 years ago, a group of Portlanders created their own skatepark without any permission under the Burnside Bridge. In the early morning hours of August 11, 2007, Sophie Lancaster and her boyfriend, Robert Maltby, were passing through Stubbylee Park in Lancashire, UK, when they were attacked by a group of teenage boys who beat the couple savagely, resulting in Lancaster's death two weeks later. The next day, police arrested two of the teenagers responsible for the attack, who told authorities they'd attacked the young couple for no other reason than they were dressed like “Goths.”The tragic assault on the young couple was shocking in and of itself, but the murder was made exponentially more shocking by the ages of the killers and the ostensibly terroristic motive, raising questions about the state of youth culture in the United Kingdom.thank you to the best of the best, David White for research assistance ReferencesBBC. 2022.
