A new Justice and Dixon story, read by Andrea Lyons and written by Gregg Taylor "From the moment I laid eyes on Michael Patrick Mulligan O'Day, I knew that I would shoot him. It was just a question of where, when and how many times. Perhaps that is a tad glib. I apologize for that. You may say that the only shot worth taking is center-mass, and you wouldn't be wrong. It is the high-percentage shot, the one least likely to afford your target a chance to take a shot of their own; Miss Dixon understands all of that, my dear ones, really she does...." In this episode, we speak with Motoyuki Shibata, premier translator and founder of the English-language literary journal, MONKEY. “Widely referred to as Japan's leading translator of contemporary American literature, Motoyuki Shibata has been responsible for rendering American writers as diverse as Thomas Pynchon, Paul Auster, Richard Powers and Edward Gorey into Japanese. As a sign of his linguistic prowess, Shibata was awarded the Japan Translation Cultural Prize for his 2010 translation of Pynchon's Mason & Dixon, a feat that will undoubtedly impress any reader who encountered that literary leviathan in its original language.” LINKS: Monkey: https://monkeymagazine.org/ Interview: https://bit.ly/3DoyfJb Asia Society: https://bit.ly/3n6kGYU J-Times: https://bit.ly/30n18XM The Deep in Japan Podcast is completely independent and crowd-funded. Welcome to the CRC 2021 Highlights Series. Recorded live in Dallas, this series is bringing interviews straight to you from exhibitors, speakers and attendees at this year's event. You are listening to the Happy Market Research podcast live at CRC. The Insights Association is hosting us here at – in Dallas, Texas. It is a big state. My guest, Tiffany Dixon, Murray Hill National. I have used Murray Hill for almost three decades if that tells you anything about how long I've been in this space. Big fan. Tiffany, welcome to the show. [00:00:23] Tiffany Dixon: Thank you very much. Happy to be here. [00:00:25] Jamin Brazil: So tell me a little bit about Murray Hill. [00:00:27] Tiffany Dixon: Sure. Our core business is recruiting. So we focus on mainly quant recruiting. We also do some qual as well. And we have a brick-and-mortar focus group based in Dallas and then we partner with other facilities across the nation. So we can host any methodology, online, in person, you name it. And we've got a proprietary panel. We do consumer B2B and health care. Health care consists of patients, doctors, nurses, everything under the gamut there. And that's – we're all based in Dallas. So our core recruiting company is – we're all in Dallas here. Yes, which is nice, which has been great too because you know everybody talks about the pandemic and everything like that, but we were lucky enough to be you know back in the office together recruiting quick; very quick. [00:01:18] Jamin Brazil: For sure. Well this is one of the first back to physical space, in person – that's the word for that – events in market research. What do you think about getting back in person? [00:01:29] Tiffany Dixon: Oh I think it's great. I think it's definitely past time. We needed this. Everybody needs to get back seeing people. I think you know when you stay at home I mean you naturally start to become a little bit introverted and you miss that camaraderie and just the personal interaction, and you know the ideas that bounce off of each other. When you're you know stuck at home just behind your laptop you kind of lose that. You kind of – I feel like you lose. [00:01:51] Jamin Brazil: A hundred percent. [00:01:53] Tiffany Dixon: You lose the steam. And you know I like getting out every day and going to the office and going back home. It separates it, which is nice. And I think again, you're more creative. You know I had brain mush sometimes when I was sitting at home. I was like I need to get out. I need interaction, so. [00:02:10] Jamin Brazil: So it's been really good for you it sounds like. [00:02:11] Tiffany Dixon: Yes. [00:02:12] Jamin Brazil: And obviously having a focus group facility really good for that as well. [00:02:14] Tiffany Dixon: Exactly. [00:02:15] Jamin Brazil: Thinking about 2021, I mean the pandemic has really digitized market research. It's kind of like a time machine. I feel like we went ten years in the future and now we're like right here. [00:02:25] Tiffany Dixon: Yep. [00:02:26] Jamin Brazil: What do you see as a trend moving into 2022 as a result of the pandemic? [00:02:30] Tiffany Dixon: You know I think we're going to continue to see the online research.
Substance addition - more traditional idea of addiction to a substance that causes a physiological addiction (that's not to say there aren't behavioural elements). Often mind-altering substances.Behavioural addiction - behaviours that impact the rewards centres of the brain, such as gambling, binge eating, sex, shopping, gaming, exercise, cosmetic surgery, watching porn, risky behaviours. The current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, 4th Edition (DSM-IV-TR) has designated formal diagnostic criteria for several of these disorders, classifying them as impulse control disorders, a separate category from substance use disorders. Other behaviors (or impulse control disorders) have been included in DSM-IV DSM – gambling, kleptomania, internet gaming disorder, internet addiction, food addiction, hypersexuality, shopping addiction, exercise addiction, and tanning addiction.Behavioural addictions have more than tripled in the last decade while substance abuse has remained relatively stable over the last 20 years. This also correlates with the widespread use of social media (correlation not causation!)Phones - one click on Amazon prime, a few clicks to online porn, a few clicks to takeaway orders, a few clicks to place an online bet…Signs of behavioural addiction:* Spending the majority of your time engaging in the behavior, thinking about or arranging to engage in the behavior, or recovering from the effects* Becoming dependent on the behavior as a way to cope with emotions and to “feel normal”* Continuing despite physical and/or mental harm* Having trouble cutting back despite wanting to stop* Neglecting work, school, or family to engage in the behavior more often* Experiencing symptoms of withdrawal (for example, depression or irritability) when trying to stop* Minimizing or hiding the extent of the problemGambling - Johnson & Dixon (2009) used a response cost to reduce gambling behaviours in pathological gamblers by getting the participants to pay to gamble (or have the dealer perform the response for free). Only partially successful. To me this makes sense. To gamble, you have to pay?!Dixon, Marley & Jacobs (2003) found through multiple measures of delay discounting indicated that gamblers discounted delayed rewards (1 week later) more steeply than did control participants. SO maybe casinos/online gambling forums should deliver rewards one week/month/year later?Interestingly, there have also been behavioural interventions for substance abuse disorders, such as alcoholism and heroin use published in JABA.Personal use?- Baseline data- Social validity- Determine intervention- Take dataRef:Johnson, T.E. and Dixon, M.R. www.GoodMorningGwinnett.com The bill would require additional commissioners to be present to form a quorum, which would make it difficult for the board to make timely decisions, Carden said. He added that the bill would not only add add five seats but undermine and weaken the chairperson's position.“I think this is a poorly planned bill,” Carden said. “I don't think they took in a lot of consideration as to the implementation in county government. If they did, it's pretty clear to me their goal was to hurt the efficiency of county government in which we're able to get together to do our job to serve the people.”In regard to the education bill, Dixon said the board should be nonpartisan since “the education of our children is a nonpartisan issue,” adding that he's a proponent of making sure critical race theory is not taught in Gwinnett's schools.SOURCE: www.AJC.com
Dr. Brian Dixon is no stranger to startups. He is solving the problems that he is personally facing as a mental health care provider by starting several companies to fill the gaps that he sees in his own industry. With a vision that everyone should be able to access mental health care, Dr. Dixon is innovating the psychiatry industry by creating startups like Gide, SimplyPsych and Forward Together. He also shares how he wants to make Fort Worth a “Feel Good City” by connecting mental health providers in a single space.
We start with the honeymoon, time away from The City. Jeff and Erin spent two weeks in northern New Mexico, bouncing around between Taos, Santa Fe, and the small town of Dixon (about halfway between Taos and Santa Fe), where old friends of Jeff have some land with a house, a casita, a tiny house, a large garden, and some chickens. Then we back up to start chronicling Thursday, October 14, 2021. Jeff's wedding day started with some rather incredible news: Storied: San Francisco won Best Podcast in 48 Hills/SF Bay Guardian's Best of the Bay 2021!!! The whole point of our recording us talking about the wedding is that we felt it needed to be memorialized. Yes, it was my wedding ... but I have no problem saying that it was fucking epic. Please listen to the podcast for details of the day, but here, shout-outs are in order. As you'll see, many of the folks instrumental in making the day what it was have been on the podcast. Had Dartmouth offered a course of study in architecture, guest Julie Kline Dixon may have taken it. At an early age, she would cover her school notes with sketches of floor plans and seemed drawn to the field. She had sat through one day of the sole architecture course she saw offered, but dropped the course when she realized it was mostly focused on the structure of bridges and that didn't appeal to her. When, as a history major, she approached graduation, she didn't have an idea of what she was going to do. Still, she couldn't shake the idea of architecture. She found a pre-professional program in architecture and design the summer after graduation and finally felt at home. She worked at a small firm in Cambridge and decided to apply to architecture school, which she did at UVa with an emphasis on historic preservation. At the same time, she met her husband and committed to a life with him on a farm in rural Virginia. As such, she needed to figure out how to make a life in architecture fit into that reality. She realized, in time, that she could marry the two and build a successful practice focused on rural residential projects while raising her own growing family from her farmhouse. Taking the time to listen to the rhythms of farm life, she began incorporating that into her approach to making spaces for others. In this episode, find out from Julie how making space for people is often about much more than the structural components…on ROADS TAKEN...with Leslie Jennings Rowley. About This Episode's GuestJulie Kline Dixon is founder and partner of Rosney Company Architects in Charlottesville, Virginia, specializing in beautiful rural residential work. She lives on a farm in the middle of nowhere Virginia with her husband and their three feral (but now well grown) children. In this episode of Inside Great Minds with Adam Outland, Adam interviews Heather Adams, the founder and CEO of Choice Media & Communications. The central theme of this episode is about evolving who you are as a leader and entrepreneur to scale a business in order to design the life you want. As a leader and innovator in the PR landscape, Heather discusses the essential components for a business to have clarity in its messaging. She shares her storyteller roots and how important it is for any business to aspire to be storytellers, as well. She also discusses how she generates exposure for her clients and overcomes the challenges of an ever-evolving public relations industry. Key Takeaways ◾️ The importance of relationship building in almost all aspects of your business, from sales to providing services, and building a team. ◾️ The two hard truths she learned while building Choice: finding partners she could trust and pricing to grow. ◾️ After being laid off, Heather stood up for herself and the future she wanted to create. She advocated for herself and teaches the mindset others can follow to build the life they want. ◾️ Listening to your ideal client can lead to opportunities, both as a leader and in expanding a business. ◾️ The opportunities found during the COVID lockdowns when all of her clients were in crisis mode simultaneously, and how business owners should look at challenges as a way to grow. Quotes After being laid off: "My husband looked at me and he said, 'I don't want you to take your next step out of fear.' You know, 'You have worked so hard to build this career and professional success that you've achieved. Go and carve out and design the life that you are wanting.'" When it comes to scaling her business: "I used to believe that I was a really good manager and that I also could get in the trenches. And I think as I've matured and grown and also gotten feedback, I've learned that those are areas where I have some gifting, but it's not like my superpower. And so it's best to, as my mentor taught me, hire better and smarter than you and get people in those roles that can really help you in that in that regard." How to stay competitive in any industry: "Well, if we weren't constantly evolving and staying on top of the latest trends, the technology, the way people are receiving their information, different formats -- podcasts didn't exist back then, right -- then we would be non existent. So, I think you constantly have to be evolving, developing, and staying educated." Advice she would give to her 20-something self: "Number one, I would say calm down. Like, just relax, and rest more, you know. The second thing I would say is the size of your office, the title that you have, and the salary that you make does not define how successful you are, how happy you are, or what kind of leader you are." About Heather Adams Heather is the communications whiz who leads Choice's impressive team of women, and one man, as they serve preeminent voices in publishing, government, lifestyle, entertainment, business, and faith-based arenas. A sincere focus on connecting with people has resulted in a diverse list of past and present clientele that reads like a who's who of contemporary thought leadership and compelling characters: Rev. Billy Graham, President Jimmy Carter, Dave Ramsey, Jen Hatmaker, The Bachelor's Sean Lowe, Ernie Johnson, Robin McGraw, the Johnny Cash family, Rick Warren, Marcus Buckingham, WWE Hall of Fame Shawn Michaels, John Maxwell, and Max Lucado, among others, have all called on her. Heather has played an instrumental role in helping more than 100 authors land spots on The New York Times best-sellers and secured clients coverage in elite national media. Prior to founding Choice, Heather was head of Heather Adams Consulting, a branding, communication, and public relations firm she launched after serving as Director of Publicity at Thomas Nelson Publishers, a division of HarperCollins. Heather is a proud alumna of the University of Georgia. She lives in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, with her husband Matthew Adams, and their two young sons, Dixon and Thackston. The arrest and incarceration of New Mexico resident Chris Dixon provide yet another stark example of the Kafkaesque nature of contemporary police power. Dixon was arrested after police tired to force him to consent to an illegal search of the business where he worked. But the actions of the officer, coupled with the fallout Dixon faced, show that American law enforcement deliberately wields its arbitrary and heavy-handed power to sow chaos and erode the rights of the people.Help us continue producing Police Accountability Report by following us and becoming a monthly sustainer: Donate: https://therealnews.com/donate-pod-parSign up for our newsletter: https://therealnews.com/nl-pod-parGet Police Accountability Report updates: https://therealnews.com/pod-up-parLike us on Facebook: https://facebook.com/therealnewsFollow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/therealnews
