Today on another encore episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to three prior guests of the podcast who are talking to us in the boldest experiment in Rarified Heir Podcast history! How so? We are talking to them all at once. Something we had never done before. But don't fret, Carnie Wilson, Jenny Brill and Shawn Kay have been friends for quite a long time and, in fact, they know each other and host Josh Mills from as far back as elementary school. There are laughs and some tears on this one. Since the time of this recording, sadly we have lost two of the celebrity parents of our guests, as both Mitzi McCall, mother of Jenny Brill and Brian Wilson, father of Carnie Wilson have both passed away as of this encore episode. While it puts things in perspective rather quickly, it also helps us to realize that the entire point of this podcast is to make sure that in this fast paced world, we don't forget the names and stories about some of the most beloved entertainers of the 20th century. And with that in mind, this episode is a rollicking one, a bit experimental as we said but also fast paced, filled with childhood memories and what it was like not only growing up the child of a celebrity but also with friends whose parents were also celebrities. We get into some ridiculous tales about the Oakwood school where they all met, insane stories about album jackets as modes of transportation and a nostalgic trip down a very 1970s memory lane. Which begs the question, just how did the children of Mitzi McCall, Charlie Brill, John Kay, Brian Wilson and Marilyn Wilson get along? In a word? Famously. Take a listen.

Marga Gomez, Part 2 (S8E1)

Storied: San Francisco

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 4, 2025 26:57

Part 2 picks up where we left off in Part 1. Marga had just arrived in San Francisco and lived in a collective house with a lesbian and two gay men ("of course, the decorations were fabulous"). It was a bit of a party house, known for throwing spectacular Halloween fests. Marga talks about collective living, chore charts and stuff like that. Eventually, the woman Marga drove across country with split from her, as so often happens (I certainly relate). Everyone who lived in that first house, she says, was into rolfing and coffee enemas. Marga wasn't too keen on any of it. The meals were vegetarian and bland, and perhaps most importantly for her, not Cuban. Her roommates gave painful hugs and held hands before they ate. It just wasn't her scene. And so she found work in a Hippie coffeehouse called Acme Cafe on 24th Street. All her coworkers there were performers. She was just happy to make omelettes. Underground celebrities like R. Crumb and John Waters came in regularly, and Marga loved it. Her fellow cafe employees, many of whom were artists, would ask her, “So, what do you do?” And she would answer, “I make omelettes.” She also worked at a bath house on Market called Finilla's Finnish Baths. Marga's job there was to hand out towels to spa-goers. She later learned that the owner sexually abused and exploited workers there, mostly the masseuses. A perk of her job, though, was access to the steam sauna, and Marga took advantage of that as much as she could. That sauna room also served as a meeting space for a group of older women. One of them, an older Mexican woman, would leave her Chihuahua in the lobby while she steamed, the idea being that Marga would take care of the dog. Eventually, Ms. Montoya got 86'd from the bathhouse for steaming flour tortillas in the sauna on the hot stones. Another regular, a famous singer whom Marga won't name, was kicked out for a different reason. Marga takes a sidebar to explain what a “primal scream” is. Then she takes us back to the sauna and the famous singer, who proceeded one day to launch into her own primal scream. Marga describes other women from the sauna running out frantically. Meanwhile, she says, over in the men's sauna, “there was a different kind of screaming.” She goes on another sidebar about the time she got crabs at the bathhouse. You just have to listen to that one. Marga also had a job as a gardener at a house in Pac Heights, despite not loving that kind of work. She shares a story of using the “servant's bathroom” on that job and discovering that she had crabs. Then the conversation shifts to Marga's next show—Spanish Stew. It will be her 15th one-person show, which she began developing at The Marsh here in The City, where she did her first-ever one-person show back in the day. The New Conservatory Theater Center commissioned the show, which is set in 1976 San Francisco, the year that Marga landed here. It's also about cooking, something near and dear to her heart. Marga points out that the New Conservatory Theater Center recently lost its NEA funding thanks to the fascist US regime, but that the community is helping keep the theater afloat. Please go see this show. I know I will. It opens October 17, 2025. For more info and to buy tickets, please visit Marga's website. We'd love to hear from you! Please send us a Text Message!I discovered a song I had written 4 or five decades ago. It was a response to a very bad habit that I had fallen into in life. The song was written and performed in my living room studio and was a one take … this means that I sang and played it one time in the recording process. It was an imperfect performance, but, for me, it was a powerful reaction to a profound turning point in my life. It touched me very deeply to hear the depth of emotion contained in this one take. I loved the song and decided to re-record it. As it was , in several tries I could not match the depth of the song sung by the much younger me. So I used the original Guitar/Vocal mixed track and added an orchestration to it in my studio – a duet performed by the two Mes – young and old.Theater of the Imagination is presented by Watchfire Music:  https://watchfiremusic.com/Updated Watchfire Music Commercial

Some say there are only two seasons in Madison: winter and moving season. Starting in late July and stretching into August, downtown streets are flooded with piles of trash from folks participating in the annual housing shuffle. And keeping the city clean during this time is no easy feat, especially when would-be treasure hunters dig through the heaps looking to strike gold. To get the scoop on how the city keeps up with the mess, and get tips for what to do with your unwanted items, we caught up with Bryan Johnson, recycling coordinator and public information officer with the city's Streets Division. Find the map, large item disposal information, and collection details mentioned in today's show here. ‼️We're doing our annual survey to learn more about our listeners. Kadi Lee is a celebrity hair colorist and the co-founder of Highbrow Hippie, a luxury beauty and wellness brand rooted in clean ingredients, intentional rituals, and timeless beauty.Growing up in a small town outside New York, Kadi learned to care for her own textured hair at just eleven, sparking a passion for beauty that would shape her life. That passion took her from a college side hustle to training at Aveda and working in some of New York City's top salons. In 2019, she and her longtime friend Myka Harris brought that experience to Venice Beach, launching Highbrow Hippie — a beauty and wellness destination that embodies clean living and a laid-back California vibe, which we're going to talk all about today.

Today on another brand new episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast we have a first in our history. We bring you the first ever, three part episode. Our guest today is Peter Rafelson, son of director Bob Rafelson. Admittedly, we sort of lied to you on because there really wasn't going to be a third episode. But after our chat with Peter on the first two episodes, we decided there was more to discuss and we bring you the result. It's a fun one too. On this episode, we discuss Peter's remembrances of his father's favorite LA restaurants – from Dan Tana's to The Cock and Bull, Hamburger Hamlet and a mob joint at the end of Sunset whose name is lost to the mists of time. Somehow this turns into a discussion about visiting the Playboy Mansion in elementary school, dressing in drag while dining for a very specific purpose and sneaking into a nude stage production at age nine. Clearly, the Wild Child we discussed in prior episodes still has stories to tell us that will delight and amaze you. From there we learn about what kind of car his father drove and why he (and his mom) got a new one every year. Thank you Colgems! We segue from here to Peter's own career in music and a discussion about the most unlikely place he met a member of Fleetwood Mac who recorded a song of his, watching Madonna clear the hall of Teamsters before a surprise appearance on network television, meeting Prince in the rafters of a private home, playing piano alongside Burt Bacharach on a piano bench, driving Babs home after a one take recording and so much more. We really hope that our white lie was worth it and you enjoy the first ever three part interview on the Rarified Heir Podcast with Peter Rafelson. As you know, everyone has a story. This one just has three parts. Take a listen.

Today on part two of our conversation on the Rarified Heir Podcast, this episode continues our conversation with Peter Rafelson, son of director and producer Bob Rafelson. Recorded the week after part one, this episode delves into some pretty heavy as well as some pretty of the wall stuff. And as you have heard on part one, it seems like that was par for the course in the Rafelson household in the 1960s and 1970s. As one of the leading figures in the American New Wave filmmakers, Bob Rafelson was responsible for producing or directing some classic, seminal films that influenced generations of film makers. It's quite a resume including films like The Postman Always Rings Twice, Head, The Last Picture Show, Easy Rider, The King of Marvin Gardens, Mountains of the Moon, a film we discuss at length, Stay Hungry as well as an unfortunately named anthology, Porn.com. Beginning with Davy Jones, we also discuss what each member of The Monkees was like off camera, how he spent the Summer of 1975 pumping iron with Arnold Schwarzenegger in Alabama, his role in the Alan Parker movie Fame, how the magazine Psychology Today saved his bacon growing up as a kid and everything in between. We discuss dyslexia, smoking pot with your teachers, trade school, working with his dad scoring a film and much more. So get ready for part two of our conversation with guest Peter Rafelson and learn what it was like having The Monkees instruments in his basement for years after the show ended its run. It's up next on part two of our conversation with the son of an Easy Rider or a Raging Bull. We're just not sure which one it was. This is the Rarified Heir Podcast. Everyone has a story.

Goodfellas meets Savages meets Catch Me If You Can in this true tale of high-stakes smuggling from pot's outlaw years. Richard Stratton was the unlikeliest of kingpins. A clean-cut Wellesley boy who entered outlaw culture on a trip to Mexico, he saw his search for a joint morph into a thrill-filled dope run, smuggling two kilos across the border in his car door. He became a member of the Hippie Mafia, traveling the world to keep America high, living the underground life while embracing the hippie credo, rejecting hard drugs in favor of marijuana and hashish. With cameos by Whitey Bulger and Norman Mailer, Smuggler's Blues tells Stratton's adventure while centering on his last years as he travels from New York to Lebanon's Bekaa Valley to source and smuggle high-grade hash in the midst of civil war, from the Caribbean to the backwoods of Maine, and from the Chelsea Hotel to the Plaza as his fortunes rise and fall. All the while he is being pursued by his nemesis, a philosophical DEA agent who respects him for his good business practices. A true-crime story that sounds like fiction, Smuggler's Blues is a psychedelic road trip through international drug smuggling, the hippie underground, and the war on weed. As Big Marijuana emerges, it brings to vivid life an important chapter in pot's cultural history.https://amzn.to/3TMQu4xBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

Throughout the early 1970s, California's Bay Area was in the grip of terror as multiple serial killers operated at the time same time and in more or less the same space. In time, some of these killers, like Ed Kemper, would be caught, while others, like the Zodiac Killer, would remain unidentified. Yet it was the ones who appeared to kill at random, without any preferred victim, that would prove the most terrifying and most difficult to catch. Herbert Mullin was one such killer, and while he may have been active for a very short period, he managed to do a tremendous amount of damage in such a little amount of time.Over a five-month period in late 1972 and early 1973, Herbert Mullin killed thirteen people, including a college girl, a Catholic priest, and a former high school friend and that friend's neighbors. To investigators, Mullin's victims appeared to be—and indeed largely were—chosen at random and the weapons used were chosen more out of convenience than pathology. Had Mullin's final murder not been committed in full view of witnesses, there's a very good chance he would have gone on to kill many more people before being caught, if he ever was.Thank you to the Incredible Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research and Writing support!ReferencesAssociated Press. 1972.
