What happens when lifelong fandom meets musical opportunity? Matt Hughes knows firsthand. Having grown up purchasing Black Sabbath albums, Matt eventually found himself trading guitar solos with Tony Iommi and jamming alongside Bill Ward through Rock and Roll Fantasy Camp experiences that transformed his relationship with music. The most remarkable chapters of Matt's story revolve around Rock and Roll Fantasy Camp, which he describes as "life-changing." Through this innovative program, musicians of all skill levels get to perform with rock legends. For Matt, this meant playing Hendrix's "Hey Joe" with Bill Ward and Lita Ford, and later receiving "the nod" from Tony Iommi to take a guitar solo during Black Sabbath's "Into the Void." These surreal moments—capped by Iommi gifting him a guitar pick—illustrate how the boundaries between fan and musician can beautifully blur.As we anticipate Black Sabbath and Ozzy's final performance together in Birmingham on July 5, 2025, Matt's experiences offer a unique perspective on music's power to create meaningful connections across decades. His story reminds us that passion, persistence, and a willingness to participate can transform our relationship with the music and artists we love.We also look back at the Billboard Hot 100 Chart from July 13, 1985. Songs included are Dire Straits "Money for Nothing" and Dead or Alive "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)." What made #1? Today on the show, we have a great conversation with Austin Tedesco. Austin is head of business development at Substack, but we think of him even more as an infinitely curious restaurant superfan. He's worked as a line cook and dines out with the frequency of our best critics. He writes about it all on his own Substack, Bangers & Jams, and we talk about his journey from NBA reporter to restaurant professional to helping promote the growth of authors on the Substack platform. Is Substack the future of food media? It's still early to say, and Austin gives some insight into how it all works. The Sunday Evening Jam: Misheard Lyrics, Milestones, and Music That MattersWhat happens when wildfire smoke, dogwood fluff, and satellite Hip hits collide? You get a very Sunday kind of chaos — and the perfect atmosphere for another live episode of The Sunday Evening Jam with jD and Sara J.This week's theme? Misheard lyrics. But before we got to mondegreens and grandma's weed, we shared updates on ALS fundraising, reflected on Music @ Work's 25th, and shouted out Discovering Downie's anniversary coverage of The Grand Bounce. There was laughter, love, live show memories, and at least three Jeffs. Maybe more. Hard to say.And then… we got wacky.Episode Summary

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is an effective framework for creating flexible learning environments by designing learning experiences that give students choices in how they learn, what materials they use, and how they show their understanding. But can this framework be applied beyond the classroom as an engaging and innovative approach to solving enduring challenges within systems? WestEd's UDL Lab and "UDL Jams” use the principles of the UDL framework to bring people together in real time to collaboratively solve complex problems. Inspired by the improvisational and collaborative nature of jazz, these sessions create a space where participants bring their unique expertise to co-create meaningful, actionable solutions. In this episode of the Leading Voices podcast, host Danny Torres talks with Dr. Zach Smith, Senior Project Director, and Dr. Jose Blackorby, Director of Research and Learner Variability, both from WestEd's Special Education Policy and Practice team. They explain the origins of UDL, how their UDL Jam model works, and why this approach is gaining momentum among educators, system leaders, and innovators across sectors. Their conversation covers the following topics: How UDL framework inspired UDL Jams Sessions The four core questions guiding UDL application in learning and leadership Why jazz serves as a perfect metaphor for inclusive, improvisational collaboration Transcript Additional Resources WestEd's Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Jams Inspires Creative Problem Solving (Blog Post) CAST Universal Design for Learning Framework (Website)

This weeks show was a crate digging session. A digital crate dig, not sure what the word for that is.Music ranges between 1995 and 2012 with the majority of tunes coming from the 00'sThe whole mix manages to stay on a Soulful house vibe, very unual I know. Not sure what happened I must have been in a chilled mood. There is a little Subliminal section from the early days in there for the die hards.Still looking to get the May mix out. I did it on two different shows and now I can't decide which one to release. For anyone in Sydney this weekend you can find me on the Glass Island boat playing from 6:15-7:15. It's the last cruise of the season so it's gonna be special. It will also be my 50th birthday celebration, so even more reason to get your ticket sooner than later. I turned 50 last week. I had a radio show on my birthday, but I was also entertaining. So I played an old unreleased mix from 2016. It was a Copyright vs Rhemi mix. I'm not sure why I didn't release first time. I think I had lofty aspirations to tighten it up and look at the programming. Never got round to it so I will be releasing that mix in the coming days.Any Sydney DJs out there that play on the more Soulful side of house, get in touch if you would like to play on my radio show and get exposure to an internatioal audience. What happens when cancer forces a divorced couple to rediscover what truly matters? In this candid conversation about blended families, we explore the surprising bonds that formed after our daughter's leukemia diagnosis transformed our fractured family into something stronger and more beautiful than we could have imagined.Five years after her final treatment, we celebrate our daughter being officially considered a cancer survivor—a milestone that has us reflecting on our unconventional family dynamic. Jams shares how she's come to love her ex-husband's new children so deeply that she'd "fight for those kids" if anything happened to their parents. Meanwhile, Amanda describes her initial discomfort watching her ex build relationships with her children, and how that evolved into gratitude for the extended support system. The episode takes a heartwarming turn as we discuss Isabelle's preschool graduation, where her first question was whether "Aunt Jams" would be attending. These moments reveal how children thrive when surrounded by adults who put aside differences to create a loving environment. Through recreating old hospital photos and supporting each other at family events, we've crafted a family structure that defies traditional post-divorce narratives. We don't shy away from the awkward beginnings—the jealousy, uncertainty, and gradual building of trust that made our current relationship possible. But we also celebrate how this approach has influenced our extended family, with grandparents embracing former in-laws and maintaining relationships that typically end with divorce.Whether you're navigating your own blended family challenges or simply curious about alternative approaches to co-parenting after divorce, this episode offers both practical insights and emotional resonance. Because sometimes the most beautiful families aren't forged by convention, but by choosing love and connection even when it's complicated.

Affixed to the side of these two planetary explorers was the Voyager Golden Record — the ultimate mixtape of humanity — containing 27 pieces of music as well as pictures and sounds of Earth.
