Australia and its legal profession are embracing diversity more than ever before. Here, one Indigenous law student reflects on her experience interning with a BigLaw firm and how others can put themselves forward for more and better opportunities. In this episode of The Protégé Podcast, host Jerome Doraisamy speaks with McCabes intern Lara Jash, a Yuin and Kamilaroi woman, about how and why she came to study law and her experience in the profession thus far, the internship program she is undertaking with one of the nation's biggest law firms and what it entails, and the broader perspective the internship has offered her into the promotion of diversity in the legal profession. Jash also discusses her perception of the experience of Indigenous law students, the sense of isolation that many feel and how best to overcome it, the need to put one's self out there and be “bubbly”, how best to put one's self forward for recognition and advancement, why more law firms should champion diversity for Indigenous Australians, and her optimism that the profession can continue to progress on such matters. “I definitely don't know if I would have done it if I knew how difficult it was back then. But here we are, living to tell the tale,” says Jash Mehta, co-founder of Pop & Bottle, as she shares how she and her co-founder, Blair Hardy, started the company inspired by California's farm-to-table culture and a commitment to plant-based eating. From humble beginnings with a Vitamix in a small kitchen, they created dairy-free, no refined sugar, and organic beverages. Despite lacking a food and beverage background, their passion for clean living led them to craft products free from additives and preservatives, setting Pop & Bottle apart in the market.Strategic marketing, eye-catching packaging, and partnerships with local tech and food delivery services helped them gain traction. Securing a spot in Whole Foods was a pivotal moment, validating their efforts and allowing them to scale.Jash emphasizes the importance of community support, trusting one's intuition, and being resourceful. She shares their future goals for Pop & Bottle, including expanding their product line and becoming a household name in the organic beverage market. This episode of Dear FoundHer… explores how two friends turned their passion into a successful business, navigating the food and beverage industry with resilience and innovation.Quotes“We wanted to be organic certified. That was really important to us because we believe in our coffee and tea being organic. So we had to go through organic regulation, get certified, and do all of that. But again, what did that teach us? It taught us everything about supply chain and sourcing, and we've carried that knowledge forward as we've built the brand.” (17:30 | Jash Mehta)“We sold ourselves and our story as much as we sold the product.” (27:45 | Jash Mehta) “Don't let this be a lonely journey. Find community. And don't let anybody tell you or define the rules of your company or your business. Finding that inner voice as you balance out all of those outer voices is really, really important.” (43:39 | Jash Mehta)Connect with Jash Mehta:Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/popandbottleGrab Lindsay's Partnership Blueprint for Small Business: https://stan.store/lindsaypinchuk/p/get-your-ebook-now-the-partnership-blueprintConnect with Lindsay Pinchuk and Dear FoundHer.http://www.instagram.com/lindsaypinchukhttp://www.instagram.com/dearfoundherGrab Lindsay's JumpStart Your Business Blueprint:https://lindsaypinchuk.myflodesk.com/11stepsforbusinessIf you like what you're hearing, please leave a rating or review at: https://ratethispodcast.com/dearfoundherIf you know a FoundHer... we should meet, please tell her to share her story with us here.https://form.jotform.com/230008245758152Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm Hosted on Acast. Electoral bonds: There is more to unpack

Mint Business News

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 19, 2024 6:24

Welcome to Top of the Morning by Mint, your weekday newscast that brings you five major stories from the world of business. It's Tuesday, March 19, 2024. My name is Nelson John. Let's get started:On a day marked by wild gyrations of the Sensex and Nifty, the benchmark indices managed to end Tuesday on a positive note. Both Sensex and Nifty ended the trading session about 0.15 per cent above their previous close. Tata Steel, Mahindra & Mahindra, JSW Steel and Tata Motors emerged as the top gainers on Tuesday. Have you invested in a small cap fund? Or looking at the high rate of return, have you been tempted to? Market regulator Sebi put small and mid cap funds under a stress test to check if they can handle a large sum of money, especially in a space which tends to have less liquidity. But what was the need for this test? Mint Money's Neil Borate and Jash Kriplani explain the move. Over the last two years, assets under management for small-cap mutual funds have more than doubled! This coupled with an average return value of more than 45 per cent, raised concerns with the regulator. Sebi asked small cap funds to rank companies under their management in descending order of liquidity. Days to liquidation vary from 12 days for 50 per cent liquidation for smaller funds, to 60 days for larger ones. Neil and Jash also tackle questions around the methodology of the stress test and whether you as a small-cap investor should be worried. Tata Sons, the parent entity of India's premier software services company Tata Consultancy Services, is reportedly planning to offload 23.4 million shares through block deals. The shares are to be sold at a price of 4,001 rupees each, totalling an estimated 9,300 crore rupees or about 1.1 billion dollars, as per a Bloomberg report. Tata Sons owns more than 72 per cent of TCS, which has seen its share value increase by 30 per cent over the last year. This strategic sale is speculated to be a manoeuver by the Tata Group to bypass the need for a public market listing for Tata Sons. Such a listing is a requirement set by the Reserve Bank of India for 'upper layer' non-banking financial companies to be listed on stock exchanges. The issue of electoral bonds is more layered than was initially understood. Days into SBI releasing details of donations made by corporations to political parties, the data keeps on throwing up surprises. Mint's Varun Sood unpacks more of it in this next story. Megha Engineering and Infrastructures Ltd , a prominent player in India's infrastructure sector, finds itself at the centre of a puzzling discrepancy about its political donations made through electoral bonds. According to Megha Engineering's  last annual report, the company purchased electoral bonds worth 280 crore rupees. However, the Election Commission's data tells a different story. The commission's data shows Megha and its subsidiary, EveyTrans, together only bought bonds totaling 199 crore rupees in FY23. This discrepancy raises serious questions about the accountability of such instruments, meant to channel money anonymously to political parties. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court, which deemed electoral bonds illegal in a landmark judgement last month, has told the State Bank of India to disclose all details. This includes the date of purchase and redemption, the name of the purchaser and recipient, denomination, and alphanumeric numbers and serial bonds. Mint's legal correspondent Krishna Yadav reports on the Supreme Court's strict and no nonsense approach towards electoral bonds.  What's common between Sachin Tendulkar in the early 2010s, Muhammad Ali in the 80s and Roger Federer in the late 2010s. They were all past their prime but were still going on. Now what if I told you a similar analogy can be drawn in the stock market with giants like HDFC, Hindustan Unilever (HUL), and Asian Paints. These companies were once the stalwarts of equity markets, with a widespread belief that investing in them was a surefire win. However, everything has an expiration date. In 2023, for the first time, shares of HDFC Bank, HUL, and Asian Paints all lagged behind the Nifty50's impressive 20 per cent increase. While Asian Paints saw a modest 10 per cent rise, HDFC Bank climbed by only 5 per cent, and HUL grew a mere 4 per cent. Mint's national editor, Abhishek Mukherjee, offers an in-depth analysis of the downturn experienced by these once-iconic stocks. New Delhi-based Azure Global Power, a renewable energy firm listed on the New York Stock Exchange, is considering strategic moves including selling a stake to a partner. People familiar with the development told Mint's policy bureau chief Utpal Bhaskar, that the company is even mulling selling the entire business. Originally listed on the NYSE in 2016 and subsequently delisted in 2023, Azure Power has significant investment from Canadian pension funds CDPQ and Ontario Municipal Employees' Retirement System, who own 53.4 per cent and 21.4 per cent of the company, respectively. We'd love to hear your feedback on this podcast. Let us know by writing to us at feedback@livemint.com. You may send us feedback, tips or anything that you feel we should be covering from your vantage point in the world of business and finance. Show notes:Mint Primer: Why you shouldn't stress out over new mid- and small-cap testsTata Sons to sell 23.4 million TCS shares worth ₹9,000 crore in block dealAt India's second-largest engineering co, gaps emerge in electoral bond fundingWhy Dalal Street's one-time darlings are struggling to keep the romance goingAzure Power is navigating leadership churn; a stake sale may be next

Pop & Bottle was inspired when Jash Mehta and her close friend Blair Hardy made the move from the London to California meeting for their daily ritual - the morning latte. As coffee lovers who also prioritized health, the two friends asked themselves why nothing on the grocery store shelves met their standards: clean label, dairy-free, no refined sugar, and organic. Jash co-founded Pop & Bottle from a genuine desire to create quality coffee and tea beverages she wanted in her own life — and make them available to the millions of people who share in her passion for clean, healthful, high-integrity products. We talk through her early blueprint which his still super relevant to today and how she expanded from 30 to 100 stores and then onto 10,000. Thursday August 4, 2022 - Guest: Reggie Watts No time for top of show, Reggie Watts is here, and he's draped in America. What the heck does that mean?? First up, his brand new car! A sweet Adventurine Green @Porsche #992 #911 #Turbo S! Our heroes celebrate the idea of being able to drive to an event, take part in said event, then drive home from the event, all in one car! While born in Stuttgart, Reggie is grateful for all of the amazing opportunities the United States have given him. One of those opportunities is the idea of making an electric, or bad ass Mad Max car out of a Porsche 928. This might actually be a good idea! Segueing to Porsche's Mission R racecar, a short development leads to madness on the track, the insane sounds they are starting to make and speeds they are starting to hit. After a LOT of cars, we accidentally switch to the fun project that was JASH. To this day he's still grateful Sarah Silverman used to bring him edibles. Finally moving to the elephant in the room... the impending end of Late Late Show. We hear Reggie's point of view before J & Mike try to illuminate just how crazy the next year will be will be for him. Luckily Reggie goes with the flow. We are so excited Reggie will be part of the fundraiser event at the Marconi on September 3rd. Reggie hits his hard out but the show continues! We finish with Bikram yoga on East Coast Feed and some Viewer Mail, Letterman Podcast talk and Good Vibes Breakfast etiquette. Let's all keep it classy... in real life AND social media. #THANKYOU

On this week's Taste Test episode, Sigi samples the documentary Showpao, currently streaming on YouTube. Sigi likens this film to a serving of halo halo, a mix of personal stories told from the perspectives of Carlito, Rosabel, Jean-Noel and Jash, four Filipino/a/x Canadians living in Montreal. Each candid reflection had common threads but were still unique in sharing the Filipino/a/x Canadian experience in Quebec. It was refreshing for Sigi to see the representation of several generations of our culture and their personal journeys take up space in a film. The immigration stories ranged from Carlito's accidental story of getting sponsored by his brother to Rosabel following her mother's advice to change her path to create a better life for her daughter. As each person shares their unique story, it is so interesting they include discussions on a unifying thread of people and their connection to culture and food, whether it be Jash musing that she cooks when she feels alone, Jean-Noel sharing the origins of the name of his cafe and Carlito smiling and telling the interviewer, that eating adobo and pancit makes us Filipino. Each person shares a message of hope as they talk about what makes you a Filipino/a/x Montrealer, to connect and find community with fellow Filipino/a/x with your shared experiences; embrace your culture without fear and to grow; and to have empathy for future generations. Halo Halo Podcast listeners, we highly recommend you all to watch Showpao to learn more about the Filipinix-Montrealer experience. Many props to the Filipino Organization of Concordia University Students (FOCUS) for sharing this film.

In today's episode, Heather chats with Lisa Beth and Phoebe about their book “Mom Jokes: Like Dad Jokes, but Smarter”. The pair discusses how they came up with all the great jokes for the book, and their time writing the book in Phoebe's mother's basement during the beginning of quarantine. The pair wrote the book in hopes it would bring light and laughter to people, especially moms, raising children amid a pandemic. Heather also talks about raising kids and all the ins and outs of raising a boy vs a girl. Phoebe and Lisa Beth speak about what the future looks like for them both, their new endeavors, podcast and comedy shows.   About the Guest: Instagram - @phoebebottoms Twitter - @phoebebottoms Instagram - @peanut_lbj Twitter - @ladybirdj Meet the Guests: Lisa Beth Johnson grew up in Texas and attended college there. Lisa Beth graduated from the University of North Texas obtaining a bachelor's degree in English and Linguistics. After graduation, Lisa Beth worked as an editor and writer for many years until finding her true passions. Currently, Lisa Beth is a comedian, TV producer and a writer. She lives in LA full time while continuing her work as a producer and creating new comedy content for shows. Phoebe was originally raised in Minneapolis where she spent the first part of her life entrenched in theater. In 2006 she started performing improv at The Brave New Workshop, then studied with Second City founder Paul Sills, Upright Citizens Brigade and trained for the Henson Company's touring improv show Puppet Up! With Patrick Bristow. Then transitioning to primarily stand up in 2007, she produced notable shows in LA and New York, toured internationally and was featured in festivals such as Bridgetown, High Plains 10k Laughs the Jewish Humor Festival and Akumal Comedy Festival. Phoebe has also worked in film and television. This includes A Serious Man, the Adult Swim shows On Cinema and Decker, as well as MTV's Greatest Party Stories Ever. She was able to play a role on a Court TV show. She has even written and produced shorts featured on the Cannes Film Festival and has done ad campaigns for Fox, JASH, TimeHop and Oxiclean's Orange Glo International.   About the Host: Following the crumbs in the chaos is a full-time job. As a busy mom of three, a wife to a traveling hubby, and keeping it weird in Austin, Texas, it's safe to say that my life is never boring. In addition to running my coaching business as C'N'C's CEO, I'm a certified coach for a premier virtual fitness and nutrition program helping others feel better while sustaining a healthy lifestyle. My mom and dad are thrilled that I'm putting my Exercise Science degree to good use. Along with my experience training pro athletes, S.W.A.T. members, and a high school football team, I gained 10+ years of experience as the Director of Marketing building multiple court reporting companies. Lastly, I am a published writer, Content Coordinator, and Account Executive for a publication by Best Version Media. They even gave me a monthly “How to” column where I teach others how to be more self-sufficient with common household tasks. Every woman should know how their home functions and what to do if something malfunctions, man or no man. With my husband on the road, searching “How To” on the internet has transformed me into a “Mommy MacGyver”. “I don't know how you have the time.” “You're like a Supermom!” These are common things that people say, but the truth is that life hasn't always been easy or pretty. Even with the bumps, I always try to find the humor in everything because laughter is good for the soul and you should never take life too seriously….where's the fun in that?   https://chaosncookies.com/ https://www.instagram.com/heathersteinker (https://www.instagram.com/heathersteinker) https://www.facebook.com/heathersteinker (https://www.facebook.com/heathersteinker)...
