In 2020, Alaskans passed a first-in-the-nation voting system which helped energize similar reform efforts around the country. In 2024, Alaska voters are now presented with a ballot measure to repeal this same Final or “Top Four” system that includes a unified open primary of all candidates plus a ranked choice general election. Meanwhile, voters in Nevada, Idaho, Colorado and other states consider measures to pass major elements of the “Alaska model.” This Purple Principle episode features discussion with election law expert and reform advocate Scott Kendall, a major catalyst behind “Top Four” in the frontier state. He explains the impetus behind the initial reform in terms of the perverse motivations elections have traditionally provided to candidates and elected representatives. “We have set up a system that gives all the wrong incentives and then we're surprised when people act on those incentives,” says Kendall, a former chief of staff to independent Governor Bill Walker. “It's as though a teacher graded their students' success on how much they misbehaved in class. And we wanted to change that.” By contrast, Republican state Senator Robert Myers stands in favor of the repeal effort, noting the longstanding Alaska tradition of forming bipartisan coalitions in the state legislature. “I think this a problem in search of a solution,” Myers told us at the 2024 Alaska State Fair. “The way it was passed… a lot of people voting for campaign finance changes didn't realize they were voting to put in a jungle primary and ranked choice voting general election.” New System, Long Tradition? Independent Alaska House Representatives Calvin Schrage and Rebecca Himschoot see the Top Four or Ranked Choice Voting system differently. They think it will preserve and strengthen Alaska's less partisan, more pragmatic political tradition. “Going door to door on my campaign, I'm also talking to voters a lot about the initiative,” says Schrage, the House Minority Leader representing parts of Anchorage. “I think returning to the old system further empowers extreme partisan individuals to choose candidates for us.” Prior to election, Rep. Himschoot was a career educator with a window on family and community challenges in her historically low-income southeast Alaska district. She doubts she would have entered politics without the Top Four system. “It's a planetary test,” says Himschoot. “If we can keep open primaries and ranked choice voting, we have a chance at our state getting to a better place.” Tune in for Part Two of this exploration of the frontiers of election reform. How did Alaska become the North Star for other reform efforts around the country? What seminal events laid the groundwork for Top Four passage in 2020 and a first full set of elections in 2022? And what are the issues surrounding potential repeal of Top Four or Ranked Choice Voting just four years after initial passage? The Purple Principles is a Fluent Knowledge production.
Alaska House Minority Leader Calvin Schrage was born and raised in Anchorage. He chose not to follow his father into firefighting unlike his younger brothers. At 32, he is one of the youngest members in the Alaska legislature, and the youngest by far serving in a leadership position. We discuss why he didn't become a firefighter, how he ended up representing the district he grew up in (near Service High School), and what it was like to become a father in the middle of this past legislative session just before the budget hit the floor, which is the busiest time in the legislature.

On this episode of the DBR Podcast, we're giddy over Duke's two most recent commitments, a pair of juniors in the 2023 class, who both declared for Duke late last week. First, we dive into Tyrese Proctor, an Australian who will play on the wing for Duke. Proctor should be an impact player from the start in Durham, given his ranking and his ability to score. Then, we talk about Mackenzie Mgbako, who could become the top pick in the 2024 draft if things go his way. Mgbako is a big, long scorer, and Jason is excited to compare him to another scoring forward who left Duke a few years ago, Jayson Tatum. We don't want to put too much on Mgbako's enormous shoulders, but we think he can handle it. After the break, we dive into the potential permutations of the 2022-2022 roster, including questions about the NBA futures of Wendell Moore, Trevor Keels, and Jeremy Roach. With point guard Caleb Foster considering reclassifying to join Duke this fall, speculation about Roach doesn't seem to lean one way or another, but we sort of hope that he will decide to return. We finish with a few words of appreciation for Mike Schrage, new Duke special assistant to the head coach. Schrage is something of a breath of fresh air for Jon Scheyer's roster and staff, having been away from the Duke program for about 15 years. Anthony Contrucci is a proud 5th Generation member of the Schrage Family. He serves in many roles within his broader family enterprise including his role as President and Board of Director of First Bancshares, Inc. (FBS) a bank holding company located in Merrillville, Indiana. FBS's primary operating asset is Centier Bank (https://www.centier.com/). Founded in 1895, the Schrage family has owned and operated the financial institution for 126 years. From humble beginnings, today they are the largest private, family-owned bank in the State of Indiana with approx. $5.8 billion in total assets, over 60 branches, and in excess of 900 associates. As his career has evolved, he has developed a true passion for governance and operations. One of his current focuses is the codification and institutionalization of the key elements that differentiate his family's enterprise. At its core, this speaks to their desire to remain a purpose driven enterprise focused on the preservation of their servant heart culture for generations to come. This spans the continuum of the impact that they have on their associates, their clients, and the communities that they serve overlayed by a holistic approach which incorporates environmental, social, and governance considerations. In addition, his passion for governance and operations has evolved beyond that of traditional corporate. For the better part of the last decade, he has led their family's formalized family governance efforts. As they continue the transition from the 4th to the 5th generation, it was paramount to Anthony, and his generation, that they build the requisite operational and governance structures to ensure success in succession not just for their generation but for generations to come. With the collective support of the 4th and 5th generations, He has allocated a considerable amount of my time establishing their family office and formalized governance structure and framework. Although he feels blessed to be able to serve his family and family enterprise in a variety of roles, the role he is most proud of is that of a devoted husband and loving father. He is married to his best friend and soulmate, Melissa Contrucci (nee Schrage) and has been blessed with two loving children. Standout Quotes: * "I really believe our success as a family kind of exists at the crossroad of this desire to be civically involved" - [Anthony] * "That formula of putting people before profit is how you build long term sustainable value that transcends generations" - [Anthony] * "In order to be successful in succession, you have to be intentional and you have to be strategic" - [Anthony] * "If you think about the destination, you'll never start the journey" - [Anthony] * "If you're trying to solve a problem that you can solve during your lifetime, you're thinking too small" - [Anthony] * "Success requires action" - [Anthony] * "You can't appreciate something if you don't know how hard it was to have or you didn't have to work for it" - [Anthony] * "During times of dislocation, there's always opportunity" - [Anthony] * "The most important investment I've ever made is my time in my children" - [Anthony] * "Never try to replace your net worth for your self-worth" - [Anthony] Key Takeaways: * Anthony is a 5th generation member of the Schrage family currently serving in the role of President and Board Director of First Bank Shares, a bank holding company with a primary operating asset "Centier Bank" which was founded in 1895. They are now the largest private family-owned bank in the state of Indiana. * The Schrage family came over from Germany into the US in the 1800s, and over time the family has always been passionate about the community. This alongside the risk tolerance accounted for the success of the family because being involved with the community helped identify needs and create solutions. The name "Centier" Bank was coined intentionally to represent a century of service, the founding of the bank on Center Street, and that the bank strives to be the premier provider of financial services for the communities. The headquarter is in Merriville Indiana. * Despite the pandemic, banking is a good business to be in right now. Data from the bank shows that Centier Bank tends to outperform during times of market dislocation or pain. Clients are put even before the shareholders in the business, and this is how long-term sustainable value is built over generations. 2020 has been the best year financially in the history of the bank. * This success was achieved by consciously and emphatically considering the safety of clients and workers physically while also keeping them confident about their finances. They set out to help communities through different programs, mortgages, credits, and low-interest loans. * Anthony met his wife and her family at the age of 20 and she was his best friend before becoming his wife. Anthony had no intention of working in the family business but wanted to chart his course in life. He had always been in the financial sector, including commercial banking and investment. Later he started with wealth management in the family business, and then the investment services division. After a while strategic intentional steps were taken to ensure an impact in the community. Currently, Anthony spends time in the financial holding company level, family governance, and the family office. * Although the family has grown since the first generation, there are 27 family members and 16 shareholders. There is a family assembly every year, and also a family governance structure. * The goal of the family assembly is both business and to bring the family members closer together. One of the main reasons for starting the family assembly was communication flow. Success and succession in a family business is literally the equivalent of fighting gravity; only about a third of family businesses make it from generation to generation. * As a broader family, the family meets monthly with specific agendas and occasionally invites subject matter experts. There is also a family business consultant and a family psychologist as well as other subcommittees. There are G5 monthly check-ins with no formal agenda. * About the Family Portal: While trying to organize family documents that have piled up over many years and made work inefficient, Anthony came up with the idea of the Family Portal. This has been a great tool for increasing efficiency and improving workflow. * When it comes to starting Family Governance, "you've got to go slow to go fast". Even it is a small start, it's about building the behavior; for Anthony's family, the starting point was about Mission, Vision, and Values. This is where to start to build a foundation with simple things like a code of conduct or attendance policy. It gives some wins and then these goals can be dialed up to more complicated plans. * The Emergency Transition Planning (ETP): This refers to very detailed planning done such that in the event of the demise of a leader, things can be set in motion to instill confidence in multiple audiences across multiple mediums. It's a succession plan on steroids. * The family psychologist has been very valuable especially in helping family members communicate effectively. This also includes constructive conflict, which is the most important thing in communication and trust-building. Additionally, having a facilitator around when the family constitution was created was very helpful. However, the values or by-products of this exercise are less important than the journey. Families are encouraged to start this process and take their time. * After attending a family business conference where he was introduced to the concept of a Family Book, Anthony applied it in documenting the family history to ensure that future generations would understand how hard the journey was. While collating different materials to create the family book, an enormous collection was accumulated and Anthony had the idea to get a corporate historian to manage the collection. This brought the next idea to have a "Centier Museum" for these family artifacts. * Using the idea of cohesion dynamics which include the family aspect, as well as the business, financial and emotional aspects, Anthony understood that it was paramount to use the family history to keep family members emotionally tethered to the family business. This determines the filter they would use in making decisions regarding the family business because rather than simply thinking like investors, they would think like stewards if they felt emotionally tethered to the family enterprise. * The 6th generation is currently between the ages of 8-18years. For a long time, the family legacy was the bank, but now there's so much more opportunity for the G6 to get involved with the family enterprise and create an impact. * Advice for someone looking to lay the foundation for a Family Enterprise: Slow down; "you have to be patient and focus". The other thing is to save; "live below your means and always have reserves because having that additional financial capacity allows you to be opportunistic". * There has had to be a shift from being a family that operates a business to a family that has an enterprise. "We had the belief for so long that the legacy was the bank but now I believe that the legacy is the culture that fuels the enterprise" Thinking about it this way gives the motivation to lean into Family Governance and Family Office. It also shifts the mindset from being competitive to being more collaborative. All of this takes curiosity, communication, working through conflict, and never being afraid to fail, knowing that growth comes from failure. * Anthony's letter to his kids: Happiness comes from the important things in life; love, health, the time spent, and experiences created with loved ones. True fulfillment comes from finding something you're extremely passionate about, that is meaningful but extremely hard; if you don't grind, demonstrate grit, fail, and pick yourself up, you will never find fulfillment and self-actualize. If you always lean into what's important in life and push yourself, you'll find that fulfillment. This is Minnesota Native News, I'm Marie Rock. This week on Minnesota Native News, we hear about the Fond Du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa's proposal to reintroduce elk to its reservation and surrounding area in an effort to build the elk population in Minnesota. We speak with the band's wildlife biologist Mike Schrage for more on the repopulation effort. Here's reporter Cole Premo. In early July, the Fond du Lac Band announced it officially submitted a proposal to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources that seeks to relocate 100 to 150 elk from existing herds in the northwest part of the state. The elk would then be reintroduced to the Fond du Lac Reservation, located to the west of Duluth. The elk would also be relocated to the Fond du Lac State Forest in Carlton and southern St. Louis counties.Mike Schrage is the band's wildlife biologist. He's worked with the band since 1995, but is not a member of the tribe. SCHRAGE: “There's a lot less agriculture over on (the northeast) side of the state,” he said. “It's not row crops such as corn and soybeans, it's smaller livestock and pasture operations. There's a lot more forest and a lot more public lands, so we think in years to come there's a lot more room to have a bigger elk herd on this side of the state.”Elk, known as “omashkooz” by the Ojibwe people, once had a population in the thousands and a range covering most the state, according to historic estimates, but are now confined to two small herds in northwestern Minnesota.Band officials say the objective of the proposal is, in part, for elk to “once again play a role in the diet and culture of the region's native peoples.” That includes a robust elk herd that would provide for future hunting opportunities, for both tribal and nontribal members. It would also bring back a native species that Schrage says is well-equipped for climate change.SCHRAGE: “It's pretty clear that (climate change) is likely to happen in some fashion and elk are a very versatile, adaptable animal, and would deal well with whatever future climate change comes.”A lot of work is needed between now and moving the first elk, Schrage said.SCHRAGE: “We need to step up surveillance for chronic wasting disease both in northwest Minnesota, where elk are, and also here around the Fond du Lac Reservation to make sure the disease is not present. There's more fundraising that needs to be done, there's holding facilities that need to be built and management plans that need to be written.”All of this will involve more public input, Schrage says. The proposal cites feasibility studies that found solid public support from landowners and residents of the area, but there are still concerns. In a recent episode of Native Lights: Where Inigenous Shine, we spoke with a Fond du Lac elder and retired wildland firefighter, Vern Northrup, who had concerns about the potential spread of disease. 55:18 NORTHRUP: “I have mixed feelings about that. Especially with this CWD. I have mixed feelings about taking a herd animal and putting them in another area where they possibly can spread the prion. That worries me. I'm gonna need some assurances from resources or the tribe before I get on board with that.” The feasibility studies found that the restoration area has a biological capacity of 287 elk. I asked Mike Schrage about how the elk would be moved.SCHRAGE: Speaker 1: Literally in a stock trailer, same sort of thing you would put cows in. Um, yeah, other states, uh, Wisconsin, uh, they got elk from Kentucky and, and they basically load them into a stock trailer and drive them up to, to Wisconsin from Kentucky, uh, West Virginia got elk, uh, the same way from, uh, both Kentucky and Arizona. So, uh, even, you know, wild elk, uh, ride very well in, in a, in a stock trailer. Um, the initial catching of elk can be done a couple of different ways. Uh, use a baited corral trap, basically lure elk into a corral with, uh, hay or grain or something. They would find things they want to eat, um, and then shut the door behind them. Um, or you can use a helicopter with a tranquilizer darts or net guns to, uh, to capture themIf the proposal is approved, the band hopes to begin moving the first elk by the winter of 2025.The Native Lights interview with Vern Northrup will be on MNNativeNews.org in the coming days, check all our shows there. Tinker, Tailor, Clapper, Halper, SPYGATE. We examine the "Criminal Deep State" and the "transatlantic plot to stop Trump." Was Judge Andrew Napolitano channeling Paul Revere when he warned last year that British Intelligence officials had spied on Candidate Trump? We explore potentially sinister UK connections to the Russian Collusion narrative. Why did so many American Intelligence Community operatives travel to London in 2016? The list includes Strzok, Priestap, McCabe, Gaeta, Schrage and Brennan. In addition, we marvel at the strange and total disappearance of UK players like Steele, Mifsud, Goldstone and Stefan Halper. Where'd they all go? Speaking of Halper, the recently outed spy, we review his history of connections to the CIA and speculate on who may have recruited Halper to keep such close tabs on Trump campaign officials. Could it have been the panicky, histrionic John O. Brennan? Regarding Obama's former CIA Director, we review a 2014 New York Times story describing the nearly unprecedented "close bond" between Brennan and Obama. Is the Criminal Deep State now busily protecting the former president? Plus, our reflections on Roman Yellowcake, a tweetstorm from Paul Sperry of the New York Post, the "Weasel Way" of James Clapper, and holding out hope for Sessions and Huber.
