In this episode, Sarah and Cesar Roman sit down with Janet Gunn, a dynamic community leader and MSO ambassador from Greensburg, Indiana, to spotlight the real-world impacts of universal school choice. Together, they explore how policies enabling educational options are transforming families' lives, with a special focus on the success of Good Shepherd Christian Academy. The conversation dives into the logistics of community organizing, what motivates parents to seek alternative school options, and the power of grassroots advocacy in driving state-level education reform. Highlights How School Choice Opens Doors: Janet Gunn describes how universal school choice gives rural families access to private, faith-based education that once felt unattainable due to financial barriers. Grassroots Organizing in Action: Insights into the “rock the block” event, parades, and outreach at Good Shepherd Christian Academy, including how these efforts boosted enrollment and awareness in the Greensburg area. Community and Belonging: The episode unpacks the profound impact that volunteers, such as Janet Gunn, have in shaping tight-knit school environments—kids affectionately call her “Grammy,” underscoring deep relationship-building Advocacy as a Game-Changer: Janet Gunn discusses how everyday parents and community members, not just policy experts, are instrumental in passing monumental legislation—and why your voice matters. The Role of Faith and Community: The conversation centers on the value of Christian education, prayerful support systems, and community care at Good Shepherd. Practical Steps for Families: Advice for parents looking for a new educational fit: visit schools, take tours, talk to staff, and trust your instincts to find the best environment for your child. Takeaways School choice empowers families of all income levels to access private education—especially crucial in rural or lower-income areas. Personal relationships and grassroots organizing drive enrollment and success, from fun events to one-on-one encouragement and outreach. Advocacy at the local level truly makes statewide change possible; every voice has the potential to impact legislation and improve options for students. Faith-based schools provide more than academics; they nurture community, care, and values, creating spaces where students and families thrive. Finding the right educational fit is a journey; touring schools and meeting teachers is key to making informed, confident decisions. On November 20, 1987, in Mission Viejo, California, Susan Zaharias abducted her two toddlers—three-and-a-half-year-old Christopher and fifteen-month-old Lisa—after a violent argument with her husband Louis, assaulting his mother and fleeing with almost nothing for the children. Battling severe alcohol, cocaine, and crystal methamphetamine addiction that had drained the family's savings, Susan had met Louis in 1977, married him in 1981 despite her family's fierce disapproval, and used relatives to race through Lake Elsinore, California, then Oklahoma, Detroit, Michigan, and several weeks in Greensburg, Pennsylvania before vanishing from Detroit in January 1988. For nearly 39 years Louis has never stopped searching: he sold almost everything he owned to fund lawyers and investigators, kept Christopher's favorite blanket and Lisa's dolls, got matching forearm tattoos of the children, and appeared on Unsolved Mysteries and other shows while moving across states to rebuild his life. Active felony warrants remain for Susan with a $250,000 bond; investigators believe all three are alive with ongoing family contact, and current age-progressed photos show Christopher in his early forties and Lisa nearing forty. Louis still hopes his children will one day learn the truth about the father who never gave up on them.   Branch of Hope: Crimestoppers of NY Crime Stoppers of New York plays a crucial role in enhancing public safety by encouraging community involvement in crime reporting. St. Isaac the Syrian is ruthless here because he is protecting us from despair on one side and fantasy on the other. Most of us live precisely in the state he describes. We have repented. We have turned away from obvious sins. We pray. We read. We fast. And yet our prayer feels crowded. Memories intrude. Images multiply. The heart is pulled back into itself again and again. This is not a sign that repentance was false. It is the normal condition of an unfledged mind. Isaac is teaching us not to panic when the mind cannot yet fly. At this stage virtues are still heavy. They belong to effort. They restrain the mind but they do not yet lift it. We imagine that distraction means failure and that freedom should come quickly. Isaac says no. Freedom has an atmosphere. The mind must slowly learn the air in which it will one day remain. Until then it hops. And hopping is not sin. It is training. The mistake is trying to force flight. When we strain to escape images we only multiply them. When we analyze distraction we deepen self consciousness. When we demand interior stillness before humility has done its work we turn prayer into a project. Isaac quietly refuses all of this. He tells us to remain faithful to outward obedience without expecting inward vision yet. What overcomes these tendencies is not technique but endurance in smallness. We continue to pray even when prayer feels poor. We do not chase experiences. We accept that God is served through visible things for a long time. And we allow the Lord to teach us the inner meaning of what we already practice. Slowly virtues become transparent. They stop drawing attention to themselves. They begin to point beyond themselves. Humility is the hinge. Not self accusation. Not interior commentary. Humility is staying low enough that God can lean toward us. The humble man does not try to send his prayer upward. He speaks it close. Like a word placed directly into the ear of God. Lord You will enlighten my darkness. This is what readers of Philokalia Ministries need to hold on to. If your prayer feels earthbound do not abandon it. If your mind is crowded do not fight it violently. If your virtues feel external do not despise them. You are not failing. You are growing feathers. Flight comes later. First comes patience. --- Text of chat during the group: 00:06:24 Bob Čihák, AZ: P. 176, # 21, second paragraph 00:13:26 Bob Čihák, AZ: P. 176, # 21, second paragraph 00:15:11 Angela Bellamy: congratulations Father

fWotD Episode 3183: Greensburg tornado Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Wednesday, 21 January 2026, is Greensburg tornado. In the evening hours of Friday, May 4, 2007, amid a severe weather outbreak across the central United States, a devastating tornado moved through Kiowa County, Kansas, heavily damaging the town of Greensburg. The tornado, known as the Greensburg tornado, tracked 28.8 miles (46.3 km) through the area, killing 12 people and injuring 63. The tornado was the first to be rated EF5 on the Enhanced Fujita scale after the retirement of the original Fujita scale in the United States on February 1, 2007.The tornado touched down south of Greensburg at around 9:03 p.m. CDT, moving to the north while continuing to widen. It eventually entered Kiowa County, crossing U. S. Route 183, before reaching a peak width of 1.7 miles (2.7 km) to the south of Greensburg, entering the city after making a northwest turn. The tornado heavily damaged Greensburg; 662 structures in the town sustained some form of damage. The tornado dissipated northwest of Greensburg after being on the ground for just over an hour.95% of the town was damaged or destroyed and the tornado left monetary losses of $250 million (2007 USD) in its wake. Kiowa County, in which Greensburg is located, was declared a federal disaster area in the immediate aftermath. Rebuilding efforts were intensive, and several major federal government agencies collaborated with state agencies to help restore the town with the goal of making it a "green town" using a long-term community recovery (LTCR) plan. The plan included requiring all buildings in Greensburg to gain Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Platinum (LEED platinum) certification, the highest rating a building can achieve in the LEED program by utilizing sustainable design in energy, along with installing wind turbines in the city. The Kiowa County Memorial Hospital, which was destroyed by the tornado, was the first hospital in the United States to achieve carbon neutrality following its rebuilding in 2010.The tornado greatly affected the economy and population of Greensburg. The town has difficulty attracting residents due to the cost of homes in the area, although it has become a point of interest among eco-tourists visiting to see the "green town" built by the Federal Emergency Management Agency's LTCR plan. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:01 UTC on Wednesday, 21 January 2026.For the full current version of the article, see Greensburg tornado on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Brian.

Ohio Man Menaced by Angry ETs After Reporting Weird Cryptid Encounter to Law Enforcement

This wild and weird account started on Nov. 7, 1977, on the west branch of the Huron River near Monroeville. Sandusky, Ohio resident Millard Faber was in a wooded area in this region collecting moss and algae to sell to local fish stores. Faber, however, found something else he hadn't planned on finding - an eight-foot-tall Bigfoot creature. The hairy ape-like thing stared at Faber with glowing orange eyes before jumping into the river. Afterward, Faber found large footprints, a claw mark on a tree, and a putrid stench, so he decided to contact law enforcement to investigate. Three days after the incident, five pink-glowing humanoid entities floated into Faber's bedroom at night, apparently angry at the fact that Faber reported the incident to law enforcement. Also, other alleged incidents that involve UFOs, aliens and Bigfoot are discussed, including the famous 1973 Greensburg, Pennsylvania incident.Links/Sources:In 1977, an Ohio man saw Bigfoot. by UFO History Buff & Author, Charles LearComing across contemporary UFO cases of interest these days when government-related UFO stories dominate the news is difficult. Fortunately, there are still some active civilian investigators out there who share their information (without a subscription) on their websites. Stan Gordon is one of those, and he helped bring attention to a case investigated by fellow researcher Jim Brown.Stan Gordon maintains a website, Stan Gordon's UFO Anomalies Zone. According to his bio on the site, he was a trained electronics technician who specialized in radio and “worked in the advanced consumer electronics sales field for over forty years.” He has lived his whole life in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, became interested in UFOs and strangeness in 1959 at the age of ten, was the investigations coordinator for telephone reports coming into the UFO Research Institute of Pittsburgh in the late 1960s, and became an active field investigator in 1965. That year he was the primary investigator for the “December 9, 1965, UFO crash-recovery incident that occurred near Kecksburg, Pennsylvania.” Gordon established a hotline in 1969 so he could receive UFO reports and formed his own organization, the Westmoreland County UFO Study Group, in 1970. Read more →

A wind could remove your hat. A stronger wind might steal your lawn furniture. The kind of wind we're talking about today renovated Pre-War and Mid-Century Midwestern homes into more “open concept” dwellings. On today's episode: we're going to take a look at what happens when you're visited by a storm so powerful, they invent a new scale just to define it; we'll see what it feels like to have your house reduced to the consistency of straw and blown away in what many call the most frightening thing that can happen to you in your lifetime; and we will learn to what degree a cow can become turned inside out and forcefully eject its organs. And because you're listening on Patreon, you would find out how badly we'd react if Superman's escape pod approached Earth in 2025; you'd learn about the absolute physics-defying insanity left in the wake of our planets winds; you'd find out how bad tornado warnings were when you weren't allowed to use the word tornado by law; you would learn the entire process of folding lungs from the inside out to right side in and how to successfully re-insert them; and we would talk about how your bad day at work doesn't compare to 9/11 dogs. I have to say, we've done some pretty sick things on this show, but very few in recent memory begin to touch on our poor bovine reassembly section. I edited it while eating, against my own cardinal rule. But rules, like thoraxes, are meant to be broken. To help make the point, this is also the first and only weather-related disaster we've ever done where we didn't make fun of meteorologists. Furthermore, in spite of everything you're about to hear, this disaster didn't have the kind of death toll you maybe associate with our stories. Its shocking. Admittedly not as shocking as what I'm going to tell you about lungs, but that's all part of what makes it all so special.I also want to thank my listeners who've already contributed to our Doomsday Dodge Caravan Mobile Studio & Command Centre Fundraiser to replace the spite car, which, sadly, exploded spectacularly. As a result, we are working towards the purchase of a new/older Dodge Caravan. It's kind of on brand for the show. It's Tuesday, July 1, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 140 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Kevin Swanson and Adam McManus Chinese Communists give pastors 3 years in jail for leading church Three pastors from Linfen Covenant Home Church in Shanxi, China have been sentenced to 2-4 years of prison time for various charges related to their leading an unregistered church in the communist country. The church issued a statement, announcing that “We honor the service of Li Jie, Han Xiaodong, and Wang Qiang who suffered for righteousness, and we are willing to bear the cross with the Lord. We receive this verdict with a grateful and obedient heart.” Jesus offers this encouragement in Revelation 2:10 -- “Do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer. Indeed, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and you will have tribulation ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.” Brazilian homeschool mother facing $20,000 of fines Today, a Brazilian court will hear a case of a mom prosecuted for homeschooling her son.   Regiane Cichelero is facing fines of $20,000 and threats of losing custody of her child, for choosing home education on religious grounds.  Alliance Defending Freedom International has taken up the case.  Her legal counsel, Julio Pohl, pointed out that “No parent should fear state punishment for choosing to homeschool their child. Regiane made a lawful and conscientious decision to teach her son at home. We are hopeful that the court will affirm her rights and take an important step toward protecting parental rights in Brazil.”   Regiane continues to homeschool despite the risks involved. Pray for this case, which may serve as a precedent for the other 70,000 homeschooled children in Brazil.   Victory of Christian Colorado camp over transgender agenda Also, Alliance Defending Freedom has announced a favorable settlement for the Idrahaje Christian Camp in Bailey, Colorado. The camp was under threat of losing its license for refusing to submit to state requirements regarding the transgendering of bathrooms and living quarters. The name of the camp is taken from the phrase “I'd rather have Jesus more than anything!”  They use the first two letters of the first four words. The State of Colorado agreed not to take any enforcement action against Camp IdRaHaJe for violation of the gender identity requirements. The state has also clarified in a memo on its website that “churches, synagogues, mosques, or any other place that is principally used for religious purposes” are exempt from the transgendering requirements. Syria's own government helped massacre 1,500 Alawites Reuters has reported on its investigation of the Syrian massacre of 1,500 Alawites in March of this year. The perpetrators included units belonging to the new government based in Damascus. Ahmed Hussein al-Sharaa of the Free Syrian Army and Al-Qaeda took over Syria in January of this year. The new government has also instituted a constitution stating that  “The religion of the President of the Republic is Islam. … Islamic jurisprudence is the principal source of legislation.” This constitutes a step up in Islamic rule over Syria. According to Open Doors, Syria is the 18th most dangerous country worldwide for Christians. Iraq allows Muslim men to “marry” 9-year-old girls The new Iraqi government is also following Islamic Sharia law closely. Earlier this year, Iraq's parliament voted to give Islamic courts more control in family law, and permit child marriages for girls as young as nine years of age.  Supreme Court allows parents to opt kids out & requires porn sites to verify age Here in America, the U.S. Supreme Court is allowing parents opt-out rights for their elementary-aged children from having to participate in homosexual-themed lessons. That comes by a vote of 6 to 3. Writing for the majority, Justice Samuel Alito emphasized that “What the parents seek here is not the right to micromanage the public school curriculum, but rather to have their children opt out of a particular educational requirement that burdens their well-established right ‘to direct ‘the religious upbringing' of their children'” under  the free exercise clause of the First Amendment.  Another 6-3 ruling, the High Court has also upheld a Texas Law requiring pornographic websites to verify users are over 18 years of age.  Only adults will be allowed into these sinful activities. Writing for the majority, Justice Clarence Thomas concluded, ”The power to require age verification is within a State's authority to prevent children from accessing sexually explicit content.” But, in Matthew 5:27-28, Jesus said, “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not commit adultery.'  But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” U.S. government buying its own bonds The U.S. government is buying back its own bonds. Barchart reports the largest buyback in history occurred earlier this month.  Under the direction of Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, the department bought $10 billion of its own bonds.  Federal Reserve on the ropes The Federal Reserve issued $150 billion of bonds in May, but only managed to sell half of them.   Also, the Fed has recorded its first two-year-in-a-row financial loss, totaling $192 billion in 2023 and 2024. This is the first time this has occurred in the Fed's 110-year history. Year to date,  the federal deficit  stands at $1.37 billion as of the end of May. That's 14% higher than last year at this time.  Dad jumps into ocean off Disney Cruise ship to save daughter Here's a story demonstrating a remarkable act of courage and love on the part of a dad. A young child fell off the fourth deck of a Disney cruiseliner on Sunday.   Her father took immediate action, dove in after her. . . and held her while treading water, until a rescue boat pulled them out of the ocean waters. An eyewitness explained what happened to WPLG News. EYEWITNESS: “They were playing shuffleboard that was on the fourth floor. The parents were playing, and then the little girl was climbing up on the railing and flew off.” One passenger said,  “The ship was moving quickly, so quickly, it's crazy how quickly the people became tiny dots in the sea, and then you lost sight of them.” Another passenger said, “I saw the mother crying and but when they rescued them, I think that's when the tears really started flowing.  I prayed to God to save them, and He did!” The Disney Dream was heading back from the Bahamas to Fort Lauderdale when the incident occurred. Worldview teens share their hearts 15-year-old Titus Beran in Omaha, Nebraska wrote me at Adam@TheWorldview.com. He said, “I love the verses included in the newscast! They really help me focus back on God's Word and bring every area of life, even politics and news, into captivity to the obedience of Christ.” And 16-year-old Leah Smith in Franklin, Kentucky wrote, “I have been subscribed to The Worldview in 5 Minutes for a little over a year. I don't watch the news on a regular basis, but have been continually blessed by the ministry of this website. It is so irregular to have such a concise, non-secular newscast that makes me aware of political news, needs of persecuted Christians, and even basic information that keeps me up to date on what is going on. “When I read your newscast transcript,  I am not only encouraged by stories of fellow believers, but I am also moved to pray for the issues in our world. God is truly using your Christian newscast to reach people with the truth. It has been a blessing in my life!” What Troy's three boys enjoy about The Worldview Troy in Horseshoe Bend, Arkansas talked to his three sons -- Sovereign, age 12, Shalom, age 10, and Apollos, age 7 -- about The Worldview. They said, “I like to start my morning at breakfast listening to it.” “I like how I get to hear about people around the world who need Jesus.”  And “I like that I can hear the news which is filtered through a Biblical lens.” Troy added, “We praise the Lord for all of you and your diligent service to the Lord. It is so exciting to hear about donors from all over the world who are united to us in Christ. What an encouraging example to our younger generation. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.” 42 Worldview listeners gave $12,534.95 to fund our annual budget And finally, toward our $123,500 goal by yesterday, June 30, to fully fund The Worldview's annual budget for our 6-member team, 42 listeners stepped up to the plate.
