True love can accomplish so much more than we understand. It is the force that caused God to send Jesus, what held Jesus to the cross, what called Him from the tomb, and it is what our God is made of. True love will change us, our outlook toward others, the world and everything in it. But only when we submit to it and become agents of this love. We often seem to want to justify our hatred of someone by exclaiming all they did to us. We make excuses because of the level of hurt or betrayal that someone issued to us. But we find no loophole in the Bible for hatred. Even if the claim is made that we're only to love our brothers and sisters in Christ, the problem is that Jesus went beyond just loving each other and commanded us to love even our enemies. One of the deepest revelations we need as children of God is of the love of our Father God. For many believers, at first glance, the love of God may seem simple, but until we receive God's love for us, we are incapable of truly loving others. The seasons of our life change. It may be the only true constant, other than our God, that we can count on. Change happens. Relationships change. Often, even if we don't want them to end, relationships often do. Marriages that were thought to be a forever thing often come to an end. Jobs that we thought were secure often come to an end. People die unexpectedly and we are often unprepared for these hard transitions in our lives. We have to learn how to handle the difficult transitions without letting go of our hope or our faith. We have to remind ourselves that Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Even though seasons change, He does not. Nor does His purpose or plan for us. The true story surrounding Christmas is filled with mysteries and impossibilities. A virgin receives a mystical visitation from a being that tells her that she has been chosen by God and that she will be overshadowed by the Holy Spirit of God, conceive a child and that that child will be great and save His people from their sins. A promised husband finds out she is pregnant and plans to quietly put her away but he also has a mystical angelic encounter where he is instructed from another realm what he should do. All of this is very much not normal behavior and yet we read it as if it is normal. Still, the entire story is filled with unbelievable impossibilities. So much of our lives revolves around our wallet or purse - it often contains currency, our identifications, and many other every-day items. When we lose it, we often panic and feel anxiety and stress. While we know our wallet is not where we find our value, if everything in it was taken, we would feel vulnerable to our value being stripped from us. That's why it's important to note that we are the "living letters written by Christ." Our identity and value has to be found in who we are in Him. We are called to work in co-operation with God, by the power of His Holy Spirit, in establishing the Kingdom. Paul addresses the fact that in the early church some were claiming to follow one man or another, but Paul was making it clear that we all follow Christ. He establishes men to extend His Kingdom but only God can bring growth or give increase. God has chosen to work in and through humanity in this world. This is the amazing thing. It would seem God has limited Himself by depending on us. Yet, Paul tells us that God will be glorified and His greatness made clear by the work that He does through mankind. We have been saved by the grace of God and empowered by that same grace to co-labor with Christ on the same mission that He was on while He was among us. That is why it is called the great commission.
