Growing up, Beth Moore was taught that 1 Timothy 2 and 1 Corinthians 14 were the whole of what scripture had to say about women: submissive and silent. The founder of Living Proof Ministries and one of the most widely read Bible teachers in America, Moore objects to a hermeneutic limited to those passages. In this episode, Mark Labberton revisits his 2018 conversation with Beth Moore, recorded in the months following her viral open letter, "A Letter to My Brothers." Almost 10 years later, debates over women in leadership and whether women are free to use their full gifts in the full service of the church still roil American Christianity. The episode teaches that strongholds are not demons, but patterns of thinking—deeply fortified beliefs, ideologies, or lies—that take root in the mind and resist God's truth. Pastors Paul and Matthew explain the difference between a stronghold (mental, built through deception) and a strong man (a demonic presence). They emphasize that strongholds form when people accept lies, trauma, fear, worldly reasoning, or sin-based ideologies, and these mental fortresses make it difficult for truth to penetrate.They walk through 2 Corinthians 10:3–5, showing that spiritual weapons—God's Word, faith, prayer, worship, humility—are the only way to tear down strongholds. Natural methods (like secular psychotherapy) may soothe but cannot break spiritual bondage. The key to freedom is renewing the mind, abiding in God's Word, and casting down arguments and “high things” that exalt themselves against God's knowledge.The episode ends by stressing that abiding in truth leads to freedom, and that breaking strongholds requires intentional, continual alignment with Scripture. Strongholds do not form overnight. They begin with temptation, grow through repeated sin, and eventually build a prison in the mind. Because two-thirds of our being exists in the spiritual realm, most of the enemy's attacks happen there, not in the physical world. The enemy is not afraid of where you are. Spiritual warfare is more than memorizing a few prayers—it involves understanding authority in Christ, the patterns of the mind, the words we come into agreement with, and the strongholds that can shape our behavior.
