On July 19, 1963, 30 Black girls were arrested while marching to protest segregation in Americus, Georgia. After spending a night in jail, they were transferred to the one-room Lee County Stockade and imprisoned for the next 45 days. Only twenty miles away, the girls' parents had no knowledge of their location. A month into their confinement, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) heard rumors of the girls' detention and sent photographer Danny Lyon, who took pictures of them through barred windows. Within days, those photographs appeared in publications around the country. As the girls' ordeal gained national attention, they were released without charges. “I remember someone asked ‘why do you only draw white people?' It really put a mirror to me and I was like, ‘why is that?' I think it's the culture I grew up around — I didn't have that opportunity to see myself.” Jonathan Hill is an award-winning cartoonist, illustrator, and educator living in Portland, OR. Jonathan is the creator of numerous graphic novels - including Americus, Odessa, and his latest - Tales of a Seventh-Grade Lizard Boy. And your guess of which of this is about sci-fi dystopia is probably wrong - but all of his works hit on some pretty relevant themes of family and belonging. Jonathan's work does that thing that great fiction does - wrapping an important theme in a seemingly fantastic narrative. While there is a Vietnamese American family as part of the story, let's just say the main characters are also not from around here. In our chat we really got to understand the why behind so many of Jonathan's story telling choices. We'd definitely recommend Tales of a Seventh-Grade Lizard Boy for any of us who have ever just wanted to belong - or for folks who need a better understanding of what it's like to not belong. Beyond being a graphic novelist, Jonathan's an accomplished cartoonist with clients like Microsoft, the Portland Trailblazers, the Vietnam Literature Project, the Inlander, Fantagraphics Books, Dark Horse Comics, Tor.com, The Believer Magazine, Literary Arts, and Powell's City of Books. AND he's been the staff illustrator to The Asian Reporter since 2007. Jonathan also teaches comics and visual narrative — having taught at Pacific Northwest College of Art, Oregon College of Art was Writer in Residence through Literary Arts' Writers in the Schools program — and he currently serves on the Board of Directors of Literary Arts and chairs the Youth Programs Advisory Council. It goes without saying, Jonathan's one of those empathetic creators whose work you'll want to keep an eye on. This week's Episode 67 explores two stories that involve betrayals, although they're not the type of betrayals that usually appear in this podcast. Beth takes us to Americus, Georgia, where the murder of Margaret Leigh Bell is unlikely to ever be solved because so many mistakes were made when the case was still warm. Leigh's case was a suggestion from my friend Brian, and I hope that he and others who remember Leigh's story are satisfied that we did right by her. Because she has never had justice, and her family has suffered since 1979, when the amazing 15 year old was brutally taken from them. Bailey follows up with the survival story of a woman who was treated like family by her neighbors, but some families are not what they appear, and some people are very good at hiding their evil. Kimberly Morton was starting her life and had so many exciting new things happening, and she couldn't wait to share it with her closest friends. But one of them had a secret, and when he finally let it out, he found out that Kimberly was stronger than he expected. She took her experience and set out to make a difference, and that's exactly what she has done. So when we recorded this, Beth had pinkeye, and because of her blurry vision, she was having a really hard time reading what she had typed...leading to great confusion for Bailey. But no worries, Bailey is a good little editor and made it comprehensible. Thank you all so much for being here with us at the BnB this week, and please join us again next week for Episode 68! Plausibly Live! - The Official Podcast of The Dave Bowman Show
By the middle of November, speeches were being made and response were being written. James Wilson's speech in Pennsylvania had caused a great stir, and Cato's letter was still starting debates in New York. But not everybody was in agreement with Cato's concerns. As we have seen Cæsar was rather snarky in his idea that Cato should just shut up and go along with the Constitution, lest the “American Fabius” be compelled to shove tit down his throat. Another federalist writer took deep exception to Cato's arguments in favor of the Montesquieuian view of the size of republics. As you know Montesquieu was adamant that in order to be successful, republics had to be small. Very small. Like half the size of the City of New York in those days. To say that it was an Article of Faith among the Anti-Federalists that the proposed national government would fail simple on the grounds that it was too physically large, would be an understatement. As we have also said, the Federalists seemed to lack a basic understanding of human – and particularly American – nature. when Americus – an ardent Federalist – put pen to paper to respond to Cato, he made it clear that nobody could possibly take Montesquieu and his irrefragable axiom seriously… --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/plausibly-live/message

After spending his early childhood in France, he received his BA from the University of North Carolina, an MA from Columbia University, and a PhD from the Sorbonne. He is the author of more than thirty books of poetry, including Poetry as Insurgent Art (New Directions, 2007); Americus, Book I (New Directions, 2004); A Far Rockaway of the Heart (New Directions, 1997); and A Coney Island of the Mind (New Directions, 1958). He has translated the works of a number of poets, including Nicanor Parra, Jacques Prevert, and Pier Paolo Pasolini. In addition to poetry, he is also the author of more than eight plays and three novels, including Little Boy: A Novel (Doubleday, 2019), Love in the Days of Rage (Overlook, 1988), and Her (New Directions, 1966).In 1953, Ferlinghetti and Peter Martin opened the City Lights Bookstore in San Francisco, California, helping to support their magazine, City Lights. Two years later, they launched City Lights Publishers, a book-publishing venture, which helped start the careers of many alternative local and international poets. In 1956, Ferlinghetti published Allen Ginsberg's book Howl and Other Poems, which resulted in his being arrested by the San Francisco Police for publishing “obscene work” and a subsequent trial that gained international attention. At the end, the judge concluded that “Howl” had “some redeeming social importance” and “was not obscene”; Ferlinghetti prevailed. City Lights became known as the heart of the Beat movement, which also included the writers Kenneth Rexroth, Gary Snyder, and Jack Kerouac. In 1994, San Francisco renamed a street in Ferlinghetti's honor, and in 1998, he was named the first poet laureate of San Francisco. He is the recipient of many international awards and honors, including the National Book Critics Circle Ivan Sandrof Award for Contribution to American Arts and Letters, the Robert Frost Memorial Medal, and the National Book Foundation's Literarian Award, presented for “outstanding service to the American literary community,” among others. In 2003, he was elected as a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and in 2007, he was named Commandeur of the French Order of Arts and Letters. October 18, 2022 ~ When you travel, you typically have some idea of the people who will be joining you. Perhaps your family, your partner, a handful of friends … even like-minded strangers on a group tour. Every so often however, when you get to your hotel, someone may turn up out of the blue. Or more to the point, out of another dimension. Today's guest already knows something about that. As director of sales and marketing for the Best Western Plus Windsor Hotel in the storied town of Americus, Georgia, Divya Patel represents a beautiful property that's briming with not only historical significance, but also … reportedly … turn-of-the-century ghosts.

That's what high performance is to me, the ability to adapt rapidly so you can achieve your potential. There are five key pillars to creating the conditions for adaptability: sleep, exercise, mental resilience, nutrition, and community/relationships.” Dr Erik Korem “I maybe have a different concept on leadership. To me, leading is a verb. If you're leading, you're a leader. If you're swimming you're a swimmer, if you're driving you're a driver. If you're leading you're by definition a leader. I define leading as being looked to in a particular moment to make a decision or perform an action based on your unique gifts and abilities. So by that definition, everybody is a leader. All rank and role really describe is how many people are hoping you get it right when it's your turn to wear the weight.” - Clint Bruce John Danaher on high performance mindset and resilience: “Whenever you are sparring, your mind will have a given direction of focus.
