Before becoming a rock ‘n' roll frontman, Michael Des Barres was making his mark on screen—starring alongside Sidney Poitier in the 1967 classic To Sir, With Love. But it wasn't long before he traded the film set for the stage, forming glam rock outfit Silverhead in the early '70s before moving on to Detective, one of the few bands signed to Led Zeppelin's legendary Swan Song label. Hanging with Page, Plant, and Bonham was all part of the ride. In this episode of My Rock Moment, Michael shares his wild journey through music and acting—from those early days in London to writing one of the biggest songs of the 80s, to stepping in with The Power Station just days before Live Aid, and later, his unforgettable run as Murdoc on MacGyver. We also talk about his time with Pamela Des Barres, his show on Little Steven's Underground Garage, and the wise advice Sidney Poitier gave him early on. Michael Des Barres has lived a life where Hollywood and rock 'n roll collide—and he's got the stories to prove it. In this episode of First Contact, host Eesha Patel speaks with Dr. Raymond Moody, the world's leading authority on near-death experiences and author of the seminal book "Life After Life." Dr. Moody is a physician, philosopher, and founder of the Life After Life Institute who has dedicated over 50 years to studying consciousness and the afterlife. With his medical degree from the University of Georgia and PhD from the University of Virginia, Dr. Moody brings both scientific rigor and philosophical depth to one of humanity's most fundamental questions. Together, they explore the evolution of near-death experience research from a taboo subject to mainstream acceptance, the role of resuscitation technology in increasing NDE occurrences, and Dr. Moody's revolutionary approach to understanding what happens when we die. Dr. Moody shares his upcoming breakthrough work on developing a new logic for investigating the afterlife, challenging both scientific materialism and paranormal research approaches. The conversation delves into why traditional scientific methods fall short when studying consciousness beyond death and how philosophical inquiry offers a more promising path forward. Expect to Learn: How resuscitation technology transformed near-death experiences from rare events to daily occurrences How ancient Greek philosophers like Plato pioneered early NDE research and rational afterlife inquiry The structural similarities between life and narrative that suggest consciousness operates beyond physical death Dr. Moody's revolutionary "parallax" approach to afterlife investigation outlined in his upcoming book "Swan Song" Episode Breakdown with Timestamps: [00:00:00] - Opening: Dr. Moody explains how near-death experiencers describe indescribable journeys through time and space [00:01:22] - Introduction: Eesha introduces Dr. Raymond Moody and his groundbreaking work in NDE research [00:02:42] - Personal Connection: Eesha shares her family's secret experience with near-death phenomena [00:04:09] - Ancient Origins: Dr. Moody traces NDE investigation back to Plato's Republic and Greek philosophers [00:24:07] - Philosophical Framework: Moving beyond the concept of an immaterial soul toward narrative consciousness [00:29:12] - Scientism Problem: How unconscious scientific fundamentalism blocks rational afterlife investigation [00:32:42] - Swan Song Preview: Dr. Moody's upcoming book introducing new logical methods for afterlife proof [00:39:57] - The Unintelligibility Problem: How language fails to capture NDE experiences and the solution [00:44:02] - Neurophysiological Evidence: Why brain activity studies miss the bigger picture of consciousness [00:58:35] - Final Wisdom: Dr. Moody's personal conclusion after 50 years of investigating life after death Connect with your Star Family. The Blue Jays have continued to roll over the last week, finally managing to reel in the New York Yankees a little bit, and have kept on doing so with contributions from unexpected places. And they've made it so they'll need to keep on relying on those for a while yet, thanks to a number of transactions made in recent days, the most notable of which saw a pair of expected contributors—Bowden Francis and Erik Swanson— banished to the injured list and designated for assignment respectively. That the Jays decided Francis keeping his spot had become untenable was hardly a shocker, but the presumed end of the Swanson Era—after just 30 batters faced—was at the very least a mild one. And it gave us a chance to talk about all things bullpen construction, to relitigate the Teoscar Hernández trade, and to look into the future at how the staff as a whole will function with a bullpen in transition and a rotation desperate to get Max Scherzer back—and, eventually, Alek Manoah—and could still probably use reinforcements beyond them as well.Plus a whole lot more! Ugly American Werewolf in London: Bad Company - Straight Shooter

Bad Company hit the scene in 1974 in a big way. Signed to Led Zeppelin's Swan Song label and managed by Peter Grant, the supergroup composed of Paul Rodgers (Free), Mick Ralphs (Mott the Hoople), Boz Burrell (King Crimson) and Simon Kirke (Free) had a huge success with their self-titled debut which would go on to sell 5 million in the US. Many bands struggle to follow up a big debut with an equally good second effort but Bad Company weren't rookies and had made over a dozen albums individually. The question was how would the songwriting partnership of Ralphs and Rodgers develop and would any of them as individuals emerge as the lead songwriter. While not many will tell you Straight Shooter is as good or better than the debut, it is a solid rock record. Chart hits Feel Like Makin' Love and Good Lovin' Gone Bad got them all over the airwaves and Rodgers Shooting Star would go onto become a classic rock radio staple. They even showed their tender side with Simon Kirke's Weep No More (accompanied by strings) and Anna. Heavy riffs from Deal With The Preacher and the innuendo of Wild Fire Woman help round the album into an album that showed Bad Company had staying power and could deliver the goods. Released March 28, 1975, it would go on to sell 3 million in the US. Do you think Bad Company deserves to be in the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame? We do!!! The idea of the "swan song" recurs from Aesop to Ovid to Plato to Tennyson. Ovid described it, "There, she poured out her words of grief, tearfully, in faint tones, in harmony with sadness, just as the swan sings once, in dying, its own funeral song." But it's based on a sweet fallacy – that a swan sings only when it nears death. And calling the sounds that a swan makes a "song" might be a bit off, too!More info and transcript at BirdNote.org. Want more BirdNote? Subscribe to our weekly newsletter.
