In March 2002, John Darwin paddled his canoe into the North Sea off Seaton Carew and disappeared. Searchers found wreckage, his family mourned, and his wife Anne claimed more than £500,000 in insurance and related payments. But Darwin had not drowned: he was alive, hiding in a bedsit next door to the family home while his two sons believed their father was dead.Five years later, he walked into a London police station claiming he had amnesia. The story collapsed when investigators found a photograph of John and Anne together in Panama, taken while they were planning a new life abroad.In 2008, both were convicted of fraud. John received six years and three months in prison, Anne six and a half years, after a deception that did not just target insurers, but shattered their own family.

Kevin Reddington spent an hour on his feet trying to undo weeks of testimony, and he didn't do it quietly. In his closing argument in the murder trial of Lindsay Clancy — the Duxbury, Massachusetts mother accused of strangling her three children, 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 7-month-old Callan, with exercise resistance bands inside the family's Summer Street home on January 24, 2023 — Reddington told jurors the prosecution built a version of his client that doesn't exist: cold, controlling, calculating, a woman who supposedly hated the kids she's accused of killing.He didn't stop there. Reddington argued prosecutors even tried to wave off Clancy's own suicide attempt — she allegedly jumped from a second-story window afterward and is now paralyzed from the waist down — as somehow not real, not serious. That's a bold argument to make about someone who broke her spine trying to die.The core of his closing came down to burden of proof. Reddington told the jury the state never showed, beyond a reasonable doubt, that Clancy wasn't in the grip of psychosis when her children died. And he went after the state's own experts by name of function, not credentials — claiming one built a career chasing terrorists, another specialized in juvenile offenders, and a third allegedly mixed up schizophrenia with psychosis. If true, that's not a small gap in expertise.Clancy faces three counts of murder and three counts of strangulation. She's pleaded not guilty, resting her defense on severe postpartum psychosis and psychiatric overmedication. The key takeaway:  1. Radical honesty is not a risk, it's a requirement In a controversial category, you have to be as loud with your rebuttals as your critics are with their attacks. Silence reads as guilt. 2. BNPL customers aren't who the headlines say they are Payflex users are not over-indebted people stretching to survive. They're actualizing. Identity-driven. The emotional need sits at the top of Maslow's hierarchy, not the bottom. 3. The two-year brand cliff is real Cut brand budget today, nothing happens for six months, maybe a year. Then sales tank. And to recover it, you spend two to three times what you cut. The lag is the weapon CMOs need to use in every CFO conversation. 4. Brief writing is a tattoo, not a tick box WATTW. What are we trying to achieve here. If you can't answer that before you brief, you shouldn't be briefing. 5. Marketing is an advocate for the market, not a go-to-market function Marketers need to be in the product room early, sometimes aggressively, because no product strategy survives contact with a customer insight that nobody bothered to bring in. 6. Learn the finances early The biggest unlock in Tracey-Lee's career was understanding what CFOs actually care about: customer equity, market share, lifetime value. Not ROAS. 7. Boldness needs justification, not just instinct The data breach campaign worked because it had a clear strategic logic behind it. Payflex is an innovator and Black Friday demands standout or silence.
