At One Life Church we say we don't just want to build a great church, but build great cities. So here we will discuss some things going on around our church, our communities, and some thoughts from our teaching pastors.
Jessica Welcher and Seth Mills are part of a team who lead worship through music at the West Campus of One Life Church. In this episode, we get to learn a bit more about their journey through music and leading at One Life Church. We also get to hear some stories of things that have gone well, and things that no one would know about, but maybe we can laugh about now. We are grateful for their leadership at our church and hope you enjoy learning more about why they worship.
This week we talked to one of our worship Sara WIlsman and she shared her journey with worship. Thanks for listening!
One Life Church has always had a focus on worship through music and other forms of art. In this episode, we talk to one of our leaders of music, Brad Fleming. Brad has been leading at One Life for 10 years and has a lot of experience and passion for this form of worship. We discuss some stories of Brad's initial step into leading music, as well as how he and his teams choose the songs they lead the church through.
In this episode, we talk to Lindy Weatherly. Lindy is the Worship Director for One Life Church and has been leading worship and people for 20+ years. We get to discuss some of the background of how she got started in that, why she's still doing it today, and how you can improve your own opportunities to worship.
In this episode, we discuss the importance of being a part of neighborhood revitalization work in our community. We talk to Austin Maxheimer from Community One about his own personal passion for this kind of work, but also just the human element of getting to meet people every day and talk about how they can help invest in the neighborhood. You can find out more at community1.org.
In this episode, Bret and Sarah have a general conversation about what the experience has been like in the last few years when we think about new people, or people exploring faith coming to a church service. Does it still happen or are we seeing more people coming into buildings that have attended before, but stopped attending in recent years? What's your experience been like? Let us know: podcast@onelifechurch.org
Bret and Sarah talk about Bret being a recent guest on the Man Made podcast. Specifically they discuss how honest the questions the hosts of that podcast were when asking Bret questions about the Church and faith. This episode also discusses the financial series at One Life Church, and a quick update on Bret's health.
In this episode, Bret and Sarah talk about why we as Christians serve in our community, and how you can take part in doing that. We also discuss some of the things coming up at One Life Church the rest of this year.
In this episode we discuss Bret's current health situation after his recent cancer diagnosis. We talk about what it's like being on the other side of a conversation as someone going through health issues instead of being the pastor comforting someone.
Dr. Braxton Hunter and Dr Johnathan Pritchett are back answering the rest of the questions from our One Life Explorer Edition Live Q and A session.
Dr. Braxton Hunter, Dr. Johnathan Pritchett join Bret and Sarah and dive deeper into your questions. These questions come from our One Life Explorer Edition live Q and A session.
For 6 years Sarah Inman has been a part of the One Life Church staff and part of creating content and opportunities for people in our community to help people experience, trust, and follow Jesus. Sarah has accepted a new position with For Evansville and will be stepping away from her staff position at One Life. Although we are sad, we are excited that she will be part of impacting our community in new ways and are grateful for the impact she has made here at One Life. We are excited for the future as we have promoted Sarah's protégé, Jimmy Marshall, as the new Communications Director. Jimmy is excited about all things social and has an exciting perspective on some ways to build upon what Sarah has helped create here at One Life. As always you can connect with us at podcast@onelifechurch.org

On October 3, we premiered our first episode of One Life Explorer Edition where we explored fallen Christian leaders. We know it happens and has been happening a lot lately. How can we and how should we respond to so many prominent Christian leaders falling? You can watch or listen to that full episode on our YouTube Channel. https://youtu.be/9RC66_6oZxU For this episode of the One Life Podcast, we continue part of the Q and A that we started at the Explorer edition. As always, we would love to hear from you. podcast@onelifechurch.org
10 years ago, Chelsea Allen attended Iris Ministries in Africa and witnessed miracles happen. We get to hear some of her experiences in this episode. From seeing a woman who couldn't see regain sight, to a healing of a shoulder once she returned to the US. Chelsea recently joined the One Life Staff, so we think it's an important and unique opportunity to hear real experiences from people who we know, and see how we can learn deeper about the fullness of God through it. https://www.irisglobal.org/ to find out more about the ministry Chelsea was a part of.
When we look at the spiritual gift of prophecy in the Bible, what do we see? What do you think about? Do you think about end times, telling the future, or maybe something a bit more simple when it comes to building up one another? In this episode, we talk to Mark Weaver about his experience with the gift of prophecy. Join us and share your feedback at podcast@onelifechurch.org
When Christians talk about spritiual power, they sometimes put terminology to what they believe. Those words are cessationism (believing the gifts have ceased after the time of the apostles), and continuationism (believing the gifts continue after the time of the apostles). This conversation with our good friend, Dr. Austin Maxheimer (who isn't a cessationist), isn't meant to tell you what to believe, but to give you some context and information on the conversation. Continue praying for the power of God as you explore faith.
During this multi-episode series on spiritual power, we are diving into the gifts of the Holy Spirit. This episode we brought on a panel of people who have experienced the gift of tongues. For some of us (Sarah included), this gift is a bit odd, and people discount it as something that still happens today. The goal of this episode is to create a genuine conversation and ask some questions to help us all understand better this gift of the Spirit so that we can continue to celebrate the ways God has gifted us to edify His Church. What is spiritual power? Is it something you're familiar with, or something you're a little spooked by ... or maybe somewhere in between with curiosity? In this series of episodes, we are going to discuss openly the power of God, and specifically spiritual gifts. In this first episode, we get to learn from Ubi Ntewo from his own experiences and studying of spiritual gifts. He has his own journey of going through different denominational ministries and seeing God's power show be manifested in his life and those around him. Ubi has a unique gift of taking complex topics and making them accessible and easy to understand. In this episode we are so thankful to get to talk to Geoff Bunting from Uncharted International. Geoff is the Director of Global Operations at Uncharted and has been able to connect first hand with friends in Myanmar. Uncharted and One Life have been connected to Myanmar for many years and have a genuine love for so many there. In February 2021, a military coup seized control of the country of Myanmar and have instilled a state of fear in the entire country. At One Life we have shared some things about what's happening in Myanmar and have continued praying, but we wanted to learn more and educate ourselves on what's been happening in Myanmar since February. Dr. Austin Maxheimer joins the podcast for a refreshing conversation about how he not only keeps scripture fresh and new in his own life, but how you can too. He talks about three things. 1. Study 2. Spiritual Reading 3. Community The Easiest Bible Study Ever • Observation - what do you see or notice? • Questions - What questions do you have about this reading? • Possibilities - How can you find some answers to those questions?
Karen Kizlin is a gifted teacher and studier of the Bible. Karen taught at One Life recently, and we get to continue her conversation on the tôlā, or the crimson worm.
Andi Miles has been serving in Kids Ministry in some capacity as her job for 18 years, and 10 of those being at One Life Church. Andi is moving to a new adventure with one of our local partners, Community One. We get to sit down with Andi in this episode and learn about her new job, what she's excited about, and we also learn from her about Kids Ministry and some of the things she wished every parent knew about the amount of time they have with their kids each week.
Tell us a little about you. Your current role at One Life and your experience and education in counseling. I have been The Groups Director at our East campus for the past 2 years. I have a Masters in Christian Counseling from Gordon-Conwell. I have several years experience in private practice counseling in WV, SC, PA, and a little bit here at OL. I also served as a Groups Director at a church in SC. So you focus and think about groups and connections here at One Life, first off why is that something that is important to you and why should it be important to other people? It's important to me because I see the value and benefit that comes to those who are in connection with others. It improves our mental health and helps us realize that we're not alone in a lot of the things we all struggle with. Without connection, things like anxiety, depression and addiction only increase. How have you seen your life change through a relationship / friendship / connection? I have been in several Groups since High School. In each group, I have seen the Group Members support each other through all of life's circumstances- addiction, marital infidelity, infertility, new marriages, coronavirus, sickness, marital conflict, job loss, moving, singleness. The group ends up serving in my opinion as an incubator to help people walk through those circumstances and point them to the God who can give them peace in their circumstances. I've seen group members assist with a move, or offer support during a trying time of their marriage. God never promised us life would be without its hardships, but what a Group does is help give support and love when it's most needed. I met my husband through the group I was in when I was single. When we lived in Philly, we were in a group who happened to all be transplants. So our group became like a little family for each other. In the current Group I'm in, we support each other through the ups and downs of our marriage. Are there right ways to connect with other people and wrong ways? Two types of people: Introverts and Extroverts Right ways: For the shy person - Trying out a group or Team to see if it's a good fit for you. It may not be a good fit for you and that's OK. Keep trying until you find one where you feel comfortable. Opening up at your own pace as you trust people. For the extrovert: Respecting other people's physical and emotional boundaries and being cautious of over-sharing. Wrong ways - not respecting someone's physical or emotional boundaries. If you see a person trying to avoid you, you probably need to back off. For the Introvert - if you never share anything, it makes it very difficult for people to get to know you. So maybe find someone in the group who you trust and you feel comfortable sharing with, then eventually you may feel comfortable sharing with the whole group. How can being in community with other people help us restore? Being in community with others give us built in accountability. By sharing our lives with others, we have put ourselves out there and said in a sense, “I want you to ask me the hard questions.” “When I tell you I'm struggling in my marriage or I don't know what to do with my teenage kids” I want you to ask me the hard stuff. I want you to say “how can I help?” I want you to say “What are you doing to improve your relationships?” “What are you doing to build bridges with your kids?” Encourage them in the good stuff. Provide support and resources in the hard stuff. Also, in all aspects of recovery, it's known that community helps people recover from their addictions and stay sober. We all have addictions - whether that's to food, Netflix, shopping, alcohol, drugs, pornography, unhelathy people. We just have to care enough to ask people how they're really doing and steer them towards healthier outlets. Doing the hard work of Restoring means taking a look at what you are struggling with. It may be a...
In this episode, we talk to Mark Weaver about some of his experiences and things he's continuing to learn in healing, spiritual practices, and restoration. We always try and start out with a conversation getting to know your better. So I have 2 questions for you for that, Mark. Why was One Life something you wanted to be a part of launching? When I'm in Henderson, where is a MUST place to go to eat and what should I order? During our Restore series, we got to learn from you on a Sunday and we talked about our identity being defined completely differently after Jesus. That the work is complete, the healing is complete. Why is identity such a tough thing for us to process and really understand? What are some of your own spiritual practices? Are all spiritual practices "restorative"? Some of the things you said in our conversation Recently we had a conversation where you told me that when bad things happen around you, that you just don't have an initial reaction. Can you tell me about that? Is that a good thing or a bad thing, because I think so many of us want to be that way, but we just can't. Any specific resources you would recommend? Books? Podcasts? Teachings?
In part 2 of this episode, we continue to talk to Carolyn Edwards about grief. What it is. What it isn't. Carolyn provided some resources which you can read through here: https://bit.ly/30qt5tZ
In part 1 of this episode, we talk to Carolyn Edwards about grief. What it is. What it isn't. When you have it, and how you can cope personally, but also how to help someone you care about while they are grieving (spoiler: just listen). Carolyn also provided some resources which you can read through here: https://bit.ly/30qt5tZ We might know the stages of grief, have you seen that play out in real-time? What is something that maybe doesn't show up in the books but would benefit everyone to know about grief? What does grief do to people physically and mentally? Inside the church, we say a lot of phrases to people who may be grieving -- are any of those actually helpful? Which are just cliche and which are helpful in healing? Often I hear people say when going to a funeral or seeing a friend who may be grieving a loss of a loved one "I didn't know what to say". What can/should we say? And then what can I CONTINUE to say beyond that one encounter?
In this episode, we talk to Paul Linge. Paul is a counselor and a pastor. We talk about some really great topics in this episode and ones that we think will help anyone process some ways to begin a season of restoration. Things from lamenting, sabbath, journaling, listening to your body, and forgiveness - Paul has some practical ways to help you. QUESTIONS WE ASKED PAUL When we think about restorative practices for ourselves, what are some things that come to mind? We are talking about lamenting in our service the Sunday previous. What does this practice do for us? For our minds, and our bodies? What are some things that you are seeing in people after the year 2020 and continuing into 2021 of isolation, and just overall change? What are some practical ways to help each other reconnect and restore ourselves towards renewed health? As you've interacted with people through the years what are common misconceptions or even mistakes you see people make when it comes to soul care? Have you discovered anything in the course of your training and counseling you wish everyone knew about better soul care? How does all of this relate to our spiritual life? Why is it important - shouldn't we just “pray more?”
Zach Below is the Director of Spiritual Formation at One Life Church. Recently he worked on creating a path for people at One Life to use to begin or continue forming their faith. In this episode, we talk to Zach about how that came about, and how each element made it on the path. https://www.onelifechurch.org/connect to see the ways to Connect.
